Brainy Dose Presents: 12 Confidence Building Exercises You Can Do Every Day Imagine a life where you are unafraid to take risks, speak your mind, and pursue your passions with unwavering self-assurance. Well, it’s time to turn that dream into a reality! Confidence is not a trait that is reserved for the lucky few; it is a skill that can be honed and strengthened with practice.
Whether you’re looking to improve your performance at work or simply feel more comfortable in your own skin, the following exercises will set you on the path to becoming the confident and empowered individual you’ve always aspired to be! We’ll start with easy exercises and gradually progress to more challenging ones. Ready?
Let’s do it! Number 1 - Adopt Power Poses Posture can have an influence when it comes to confidence. One popular power pose you can try is standing tall with your feet shoulder-width apart, placing your hands on your hips, and slightly lifting your chin.
This pose, often referred to as the Superman or Wonder Woman stance, is believed to convey dominance, power, and confidence. When you hold this pose for a few minutes before a challenging situation, you send signals to your brain and body that you are in control and ready to tackle whatever comes your way. Number 2 - Listen to Optimistic High-Power Songs Music’s impact on our emotions is undeniable.
It has the ability to stir up a wide range of feelings and can significantly influence our mood. Listening to uplifting and empowering songs with catchy beats and inspiring lyrics, activates the pleasure centers in your brain and releases dopamine, a neurotransmitter associated with feelings of happiness and motivation. This surge of positive emotions creates a shift in your mindset, helping you feel more confident and capable of taking on challenges.
Number 3 - Repeat Positive Affirmations About Yourself This exercise, while quite simple, can be extremely powerful. By repeating affirmations like “I am capable,” “I am confident,” and “I believe in myself,” you reinforce these positive qualities within you. This practice helps to reframe negative self-talk and replaces it with empowering and uplifting thoughts.
As you continue to reinforce these positive affirmations, you create a strong foundation of self-confidence that can positively impact your mindset and actions. Number 4 - Think Before You Act Thinking before acting is a vital practice that can significantly contribute to building self-confidence. When you pause to consider your actions and choices, instead of impulsively reacting, you give yourself the opportunity to make more deliberate and intentional decisions.
This thoughtful approach allows you to act in alignment with your values, goals, and personal beliefs, ultimately boosting your self-confidence. Number 5 - Create A Confidence Jar This exercise acts as a reservoir of positivity, ready to remind you of your worth and potential -whenever you need it. Write down compliments you received and achievements you’re proud of on small notes, and place them in a jar.
Whenever self-doubt creeps in, or you need a boost of confidence, reach into the jar and read a few. Reflecting on these positive moments helps shift your focus from self-doubt to self-belief. It reinforces the notion that you are capable and deserving of success, cultivating a sense of confidence in yourself and your abilities.
Number 6 - Try A New Physical Activity Stepping into unfamiliar territory and exploring activities you may have previously considered daunting or impossible can be a truly transformative experience. As you push through the initial discomfort and progress in your chosen activity, you break down self-imposed barriers and discover untapped potential within yourself. This process of growth and discovery not only strengthens your physical abilities, but also cultivates a sense of self-belief and confidence that extends far beyond the realm of the activity itself.
Number 7 - Conduct A Self-Inventory Regular introspection and reflection can provide you with a clear sense of what you stand for, as well as your unique likes and dislikes. Knowing yourself enhances your ability to effectively communicate with others because it brings a sense of authenticity and confidence to your interactions. When you are aware of your own strengths, weaknesses, and passions, you can articulate your thoughts, opinions, and ideas with clarity and conviction.
Number 8 - Expose Yourself to Rejection Intentionally seeking out situations where rejection is a possibility such as asking for a discount or making a bold request, can be another powerful tool for building confidence. The goal here is not necessarily to be successful in your request; but rather to desensitize yourself to the fear of rejection and recognize that it is not a reflection of your worth as a person. This makes you develop thicker skin, learn from setbacks, and build resilience.
It empowers you to detach your self-worth from the outcome, enabling you to maintain your confidence regardless of the response you receive. Number 9 - Engage in Improvisational Activities The practice of improvisation can have a significant impact on building confidence. It challenges you to think on your feet, trust your instincts, and embrace uncertainty.
This helps you let go of perfectionism and the constant need for control as you learn to respond and adapt to unexpected situations. Through this process, you build confidence in your spontaneity and develop a belief in your capacity to handle various situations. Number 10 - Perform A Random Act of Bravery When you take the initiative to do something brave, such as speaking up in a public setting or even just starting a conversation with a stranger, you begin to move past self-imposed limitations and expand your comfort zone.
This act of pushing yourself beyond what feels safe and familiar, helps to build confidence and strengthen your belief in your own abilities. Each act of bravery is an opportunity to learn and grow as it forces you to embrace risk-taking and reinforces the idea that you are indeed capable of facing and conquering challenges. Number 11 - Practice Independence Often, self-doubt and low self-confidence stem from negative influences.
To counteract this, practicing independence is crucial. By taking control of your own choices and finding fulfillment in activities that are uniquely yours, you break free from the influence of others. This process enables you to develop a stronger sense of self and increased confidence.
You can start by finding a hobby that is solely for your own enjoyment without seeking the opinions of others. This will give you something to take pride in and truly enjoy. From there, you can use your newfound confidence to liberate other aspects of your life.
Number 12 - Don’t Tell, Show When you feel the urge to constantly boast about your strengths, it usually stems from the fear that others won’t notice them otherwise. But here’s the thing, true confidence is not about verbal self-promotion. Instead of worrying about what others think, focus on embodying your admirable qualities and letting your actions speak for themselves.
It demonstrates humility, showing that you value substance over superficiality. And by inviting others to form their own opinions, you also establish credibility and respect. BONUS - Write A Letter to Your Future Self While this exercise is not something you want to do every day, it does allow you to tap into your inner motivations and aspirations, providing a guide for personal growth and development.
Writing a letter to your future self forces you to reflect on your current strengths and to identify areas for growth. By acknowledging your aspirations and setting goals, you actively take steps toward creating the life you desire. As you write, you instill a sense of purpose and determination, reinforcing your belief that you are capable of achieving your objectives.
Confidence is like a muscle; the more you flex it, the stronger it becomes. So, be patient, be kind to yourself, and keep at it. With time and practice, you’ll start to see the amazing transformation taking place within you.
You’ll radiate confidence in everything you do from rocking that important presentation at work to simply owning who you are unapologetically. What do you think? What are some specific situations or challenges that make you feel less confident, and why?
