This is a cigarette, if I light it now and start smoking, Niyu will hit me with her slippers. But this is chocolate. If I open it and start eating it, then, no one will care But it is possible that for me this harmless chocolate may be more addictive than a cigarette.
The whole of India is a drug addict, and the drug we are talking about is available even in your grocery store. You happily give that drug to your children yourself, and your children have already become addicts. I'm talking about sugar.
This white powder, which according to research is more addictive than cocaine. But why? To figure out what effect a harmless substance like sugar has on our body, we conducted a simple test.
We bought a weighing machine, and your daily use products too. And compared exactly how much sugar they contain. The answer may be shocking for you.
But should we completely cut off sugar from our lives? You will get the answer to this question at the end of this video. So please watch this video till the end, and if you get value from this video, then do not forget to forward it to your WhatsApp groups.
This is free for you, but it helps us a lot. Chapter 1: What difference does sugar make? Dr Nicole Avina is a professor at Princeton University.
She did an experiment on rats. She started giving them sugar water instead of water, and observed their brain patterns. The results were shocking!
Their stress levels increased. They started drinking 3-4 times more water than normal water. They started binge eating or binge drinking.
When she stopped giving them sugar water and gave them normal water, they didn't even touch that normal water. They started having withdrawal symptoms. Their cravings increased, and with that, their anxiety and stress also increased.
And after a break, when again she started giving them sugar water, they started consuming more sugar water than before. The same behavior happens in our brains when we consume drugs. Whenever we eat a high-sugar item, just like these chocolates, the sweet receptors on our tongue get activated.
And the signal straight away reaches our brain, and our brain gets full of energy. Eating sugar activates the same area in the cerebral cortex that occurs when taking drugs. The reward system of our brain is activated, which we call dopamine.
But at the same time, a stress hormone is also released, also known as cortisol. It's a weird combo. The similarity between drugs and sugar is that by consuming both Our brain says, rationality can go to hell!
Our brain doesn't know where to stop or when to stop. And then we end up overeating, we eat beyond the limit, we binge eat. Our brain is as unpredictable as Instagram's algorithm and constantly keeps changing.
It keeps making new connections, today Pooja and tomorrow someone else. This is called neuroplasticity. By consuming sugar, our brain starts rewiring, and new connections i.
e. neural pathways start forming, due to which we start feeling that the only way to be happy is to eat something sweet, which leads to addiction. On a bigger scale, this addiction is not limited to individuals, but has become a part of our culture.
At parties, dinner never ends without desserts. It feels like you missed something if you skipped desserts. And trust me, I am not a saint, I too am like that.
This has become the new normal. Eating sweets at celebrations has become a trend. The story of sugar does not stop only at the brain, sugar also reaches the stomach.
Sugar is a simple carbohydrate, which is easy for the stomach to break down. Our pancreas releases insulin to store glucose. Insulin is called a storage hormone.
But when we eat extra sugar, the body asks, what to do with this much sugar? ! Extra sugar is stored in our body as fat, and extra insulin causes a disease.
If we explain this disease in simple language, it becomes difficult for our body to digest sugars. We call this disease diabetes. There are more than 10 crore diabetic people in India, and 13 crore people are pre-diabetic, which means there is definitely something wrong in our society.
If you do not want to be one of these crores of people, then definitely watch the following video. Chapter 2: The Experiment. Time for the Experiment.
There are such labels behind every product in the supermarket. Some of you may be reading these labels. But it is not possible for you to visualize them.
Let us solve that problem now. We collected some everyday snacks like cold drinks, chocolates, and cereals. As well as some things that you don't expect to have sugar but still have sugar in them, like tomato ketchup, protein bars, and even salad dressing.
You can see that we have blurred all the products, because this is not an attack on any particular brand. And we do not want to get sued. This is a consumer awareness campaign so that you can make the right decision as a consumer.
So let's see visually how much sugar is contained in all these products. In this one spoon, there is 8 grams of sugar. Then let's talk about those things that we happily give to our children.
Biscuits and chocolates. This biscuit packet contains a full cup of sugar, around 43 grams, which when eaten fills the sugar quota for the whole day. A packet of chocolates has 1.
5 cups of sugar. A big packet of cereal has this much sugar. And a cold drink bottle has 80 grams i.
e. this much sugar. If you keep syrups at home that are mixed with milk, they contain so much of sugar.
Ketchup is not sweet, but this small ketchup bottle has 52 grams of sugar. Despite this protein bar being healthy, it contains so much sugar. And this salad dressing, which we eat with salad to stay healthy, also contains so much of sugar.
You see, this whole experiment addresses two problems. One, it helps you visualize exactly how much sugar is in the products in which you expect sugar. And two, you realize that even in products which you don't expect to contain sugar, they too have sugar.
That means, with the combination of these two things, you can easily cross the WHO recommended limit every day. Chapter 3: How much sugar is ok to eat? Often we think sugar is equal to this, white sugar which we drink in tea.
But sugar comes in different forms. Glucose, sucrose, lactose, maltose, dextrose, starch, and corn syrup, are all forms of sugar. WHO says that you should not eat more than 50 grams i.
e. 10 teaspoons of sugar, which is this much. Now you will think, damn it, I don't eat that much sugar.
One spoon full of sugar in tea, and two servings of tea, then there is no problem. The problem is not visible sugar, the problem is invisible sugar. Because no matter how unhealthy a person is, they will not be able to eat 9 teaspoons of sugar at one time.
But by drinking one bottle of soft drink, they can instantly consume 79 grams of sugar. Coke's CEO said on record, Our competition is not Pepsi, it is water. An interview by Coca-Cola's CEO is very famous, where he says, If you want to remain fit then you can drink sugar-free Coke whose tagline is, Same great taste with zero sugar, in which everything is zero.
Calories zero, fat zero, protein zero, sugar zero! What's happening, man? !
How is that possible? The answer is chemicals. An 8-year observational study tells us that the chances of obesity and fat gain increased because of artificial sweeteners.
The tooth enamel got destroyed because of phosphoric acid, and problems like erosion of teeth started occurring. It did not show any effect on diabetes. Often beverage companies use aspartame to replace sugar, which is 200 times sweeter than sugar, which can also be related to cancer.
It's study has been going on since 2013, and big companies are making efforts so that this study is not complete. In short, the discussion of whether diet soda is better than regular soda has become pointless. You will find opinions from both sides on the internet.
The conclusion is that it is better if carbon dioxide remains outside the body. My rule is no fizz in the body. That's it!
Chapter 4: The solution. Okay, so what is the solution? Can we replace sugar with jaggery?
Is jaggery healthier than sugar? The answer is yes, but very marginally. Sugar contains 100% sucrose and jaggery contains 85% sucrose, so there is not much difference between sugar and jaggery for our body.
Yes, the taste of jaggery is different, and our Indian food tastes more tasty with jaggery. So if you prefer jaggery, then sure, go ahead and do it. But drinking jaggery coffee does not mean eliminating sugar, it is important to understand this.
Masala Labs has made a very good video on this topic. There is a simple technique that you can try yourself. Start reading labels.
While buying any product, look at the back of it. It will be written on the label what ingredients are there. And it will also be written what the serving size should be.
Marketing people are smart. On a 500ml cold drink bottle, it is written how much sugar is there in 100ml. Then you have to convert it mentally.
And grams are very difficult to visualize, so you can go to this website and convert grams to teaspoons. So that you can visualize how much sugar you are eating. Remember that the marketing of sugar is very strong.
For the last 200 years, marketing companies have learned to fool you. So they will try to fool you in the name of zero added sugar. High fructose corn syrup, fruit juice concentrate, brown rice syrup, agave nectar, are all marketing terms.
But your body doesn't know much of a difference between these sugars. You will find a complete list of these terms in the description of our YouTube video. So the first solution is to eliminate this invisible sugar.
Understand this, we do not have to eliminate desserts from life, but we have to understand that some meals of life can be complete without desserts. Solution number two is make your own desserts. In hotels, preference is given to taste; they add preservatives to keep food fresh for a longer period.
It is impossible to figure out when packaged desserts are made and how long they stay in the fridge. But if you make desserts at home, you add the ingredients with your own hands, and you can control them consciously. Don't eliminate taste from life, instead eliminate this compulsion that there should be sugar for taste.
Solution number 3 is medicine. I cannot recommend any medicine, I am neither qualified nor a doctor. But understand this, everyone's body is different, So stop searching for specific solutions on the internet.
A proper way to approach this is to get your blood tests done. Check your sugar levels, and take advice from good doctors. Our habit is that we look at a doctor like a mechanic.
We go to the doctor only If there is a problem with the car. Otherwise, we do not get tests done for years. Which is why we are not able to know how a body that looks healthy from the outside is from the inside.
Glucose Goddess is an Instagram account that shows you the glucose spikes that occur in your body after eating specific foods. And also gives solutions on what can be done to maintain glucose levels. It is possible that your mind is already sugar-addicted.
But after this video, you can take better decisions consciously, and gain control over yourself and your future. Chapter 5: Conclusion. At the beginning of this video, I compared sugar to a drug.
But is a chocolate bar actually as bad as a cigarette? The answer is no, because a cigarette has zero nutritional value, it does not cause anything to your body except cancer. And that is why we do not put tobacco in the category of food.
If you are stranded on an island and have not eaten anything for 2 days, and you get the option of either a cigarette or a chocolate bar? Then obviously, you should choose that chocolate bar. So my humble opinion is that where you can read the label properly, where there is no attempt to hide the amount of sugar, and where you can consciously decide how much to consume.
That product is better. Because at least you have an idea of what you are putting into your body. The similarity of these two items, cigarettes and candy, is limited only to their addictive behavior and the adverse effects they have on your body in the long term.
Otherwise, these two items are very different. And that is exactly why a stigma is attached to cigarettes. But the energy drinks that give you diabetes, you can get them at pharmacies also.
This is not a coincidence, it is a marketing technique to convince you that this product is healthy. If you got some value from this video, and learned something new, then don't forget to follow us on social media. Because anything becomes harmful to our body beyond a limit.
A vehicle has one fuel tank, and each fuel tank has a capacity, if that capacity is exceeded then both money and fuel are wasted. Understand your body's limits, and understand the fuel going into your body. Enjoy life, but don't become addicted to sweets.
