Hi! Did you know that any medicine or supplement you take will pass through your kidneys? And that 1 in 5 cases of acute kidney failure is due to medication?
Precisely because one of the main functions of the kidneys is to eliminate toxins, waste, toxic substances that circulate in your blood. They also remove excess fluid, filtering the blood to produce urine. In addition, the kidneys keep the levels of electrolytes - the body's salts - balanced and produce hormones that influence your pressure, your bones and your blood.
And if some toxin damages the kidneys, they can stop doing their job. That's why it's important to know whether or not the medicine you 're taking can harm your kidneys. And that's the subject of today's video: what are the ten types of common medicines that can harm your kidneys and what to do so that your kidneys are not damaged.
But first, already enjoy the video, subscribe to the channel so you don't miss our health tips, and activate the bell to receive notifications. And also spread this knowledge with your friends and family. About 10 million Brazilians have some degree of kidney failure, and many do not even know they have it.
By sharing, you will be helping more people. So share there! And tell me: do you take good care of your kidneys?
Have a kidney problem? What part of Brazil or the world are you from? Write down there!
--- Come on. Some medications can damage your kidneys even if your creatinine is fine, you are urinating well, and you don't have a kidney problem. Now, if your kidneys are already damaged, these drugs can make them worse, even precipitating chronic kidney failure, for which you may need hemodialysis or even a kidney transplant.
When are you most likely to have meds harm your kidneys? What risk factors should we be aware of? · If you already have kidney failure · If you are elderly - age over 60 years · If you are dehydrated, do not drink enough fluids, or even have diarrhea or take diuretics · If you have diabetes · High blood pressure · heart failure - heart weak or dilated · You have an infection · Is obese - obesity increases the risk of kidney failure (this is something that few people comment on) · high cholesterol · and that person who drinks too much in addition to damaging the liver can take the kidney.
Alcoholics have a high risk of developing liver and kidney failure. But like I said, even if you don't have risk factors, even if you don't have kidney problems, these drugs can damage your kidneys. I will separate them into the 10 worst ones – and the last one is the one that causes the most kidney problems in practice, so stay until the end!
Number 1- Antibiotics Various classes of antibiotics can harm your kidneys in different ways. Aminoglycosides (the most toxic is neomycin, then gentamicin, and amikacin). Another class - Sulfa drugs (e.
g. from bactrim) can produce crystals that do not break down and block the flow of urine vancomycin can cause swelling and inflammation in the kidneys leading to kidney failure and quinolones such as ciprofloxacin which can lead to interstitial nephritis. And remembering that you have a kidney problem, some antibiotics have been titrated, doses should be reduced, so as not to damage the kidneys even more.
Number 2- Laxatives In general, laxatives are safe for most people. Of course, if you dehydrate you can damage your kidneys. However, some laxatives prescribed to clear the bowels before colonoscopy, such as sodium phosphate, can harm your kidneys.
Number 3- Antivirals If you have had herpes simplex or shingles, your doctor may have prescribed acyclovir or valacyclovir. Know that they can cause swelling and inflammation in the kidneys and also cause it to produce those crystals that don't dissolve. This also includes antiretrovirals for HIV, tenofovir, indinavir and others that can cause toxicity in renal tubular cells.
So, if you have to take these medicines, always stay well hydrated. Number 4- Fibrates Fibrates – ciprofibrate, fenofibrate, gemfibrozil, we use for high triglycerides. In those patients with some degree of renal dysfunction, this class may worsen renal damage and should be avoided.
Number 5- Remedies for Gastritis and Heartburn A study published in JAMA in 2016 identified that proton pump inhibitors – omeprazole, lansoprazole, esomeprazole may be linked to kidney damage if used long term. They found that people who used this type of medication chronically had a 20% to 50% higher risk of chronic kidney disease compared with those who didn't use it at all. Although the study does not establish a cause-and-effect relationship, the higher the dose, the greater the risk of kidney failure.
Number 6- Eca inhibitor type blood pressure medications or bras What are they: captopril, enalapril, ramipril on one side, losartan, valsartan, olmesartan on the other These two classes can be good and bad for the kidneys. How is it? They act on the efferent artery, causing vasodilation.
So if you have heart failure, hypertension, diabetes they tend to preserve kidney function and slow down the loss of kidneys. But when a person is very dehydrated or has end-stage renal failure, these drugs, which previously served as a shield for the kidneys, can precipitate hemodialysis, as well as increasing potassium. So, in cases where the kidneys are very bad, the ideal is for the doctor to withdraw these medicines.
It's like that balloon that is falling and the balloonist has to throw the sandbag to go up again. Number 9- Psychiatric Remedies Lithium for bipolar disorder can increase your risk of kidney problems. If blood lithium levels are too high, it can cause kidney problems.
Antipsychotics such as quetiapine, olanzapine and risperidone in elderly patients these atypical antipsychotics appear to increase the risk of hospitalization for acute injury by 2x. But of course, if you take these meds. Don't stop at all.
Talk to your doctor. If he prescribed it, no problem. Top 3 : the 3 that most damage the kidneys Number 8- Diuretics We, cardiologists, are the champions of prescribing diuretics.
Both because they are good for hypertension and heart failure. They help your body get rid of excess fluid. But sometimes they can dehydrate you, which can be bad for your kidneys.
Examples of diuretics are furosemide (lasix), hydrochlorothiazide, indapamide and chlorthalidone. Number 9- Contrasts You will have a CT scan with contrast. Best to make sure your kidney function is good before taking the test.
Iodinated contrast can induce contrast nephropathy. And it's not just CT that uses contrast - angiography, cardiac catheterization, excretory urography, they all use iodine, which can be nephrotoxic. Now MRI contrast is dangerous only in cases of advanced renal failure.
Number 10- Anti-inflammatories When we think of medicine that attacks the kidneys, I'm sure you thought of anti-inflammatories. And you are right. Anti-inflammatories like ibuprofen, naproxen, diclofenac lead the list of drugs that cause the most kidney damage due to their widespread use.
Everyone has had joint pain, menstrual pain, muscle pain and needed anti-inflammatories. And they do, however they can reduce blood flow to the kidneys resulting in kidney failure and also interstitial nephritis. The main problem happens if you already have kidney problems and decide to take the anti-inflammatory.
In this case, it can cause acute kidney failure and often require urgent hemodialysis. The risk increases from the 3rd day of use. In addition, long-term use with higher doses can also have the same effect.
Anti-inflammatory-related kidney disease is preventable. A frequently asked question - my doctor recommended ASPIRIN to prevent stroke or heart attack and aspirin is anti-inflammatory. Will this harm my kidneys?
In the prophylactic dose of 81 to 200mg, no, even if you take the medication for a long time or if you have reduced kidney function. But overusing aspirin at 500mg several times a day for several days or weeks, in addition to giving you an ulcer, can damage your kidney. Which pain relievers are safe for people with kidney disease?
Paracetamol and dipyrone. And if you need an anti-inflammatory, the ideal would be steroids, which also have the risk of other diseases such as osteoporosis, increased glucose, cataracts. .
. Important It's not that the drug isn't on the list because it doesn't harm your kidneys. There are drugs for harmful osteoporosis, chemotherapy, anti-transplant rejection drugs and even supplements.
How to prevent kidney damage? Do not take any medication without being prescribed by your doctor. Not even supplements.
Some supplements like chromium, yohimbine, creatine, can harm a kidney that is already in trouble, so be extra careful. Avoid getting dehydrated. Drnk plenty of fluids so your kidneys can flush out toxins.
Dehydration is a known risk factor for kidney failure, as it can cause the drug to become too concentrated and stay in your body longer. Avoid drinking alcohol while taking medication as alcohol leads to dehydration, increases blood pressure puts you at greater risk for kidney problems If you have high blood pressure always keep your pressure under control. Both high blood pressure and very low blood pressure damage the kidneys.
If you have diabetes, too. Your blood glucose has to be well controlled to avoid kidney problems. And if you already have kidney problems, visit your nephrologist regularly.
And, always good to remember that those who have kidney problems should not eat star fruit, should avoid running from star fruit. Juice or even fruit. It contains a substance called caramboxin which is neurotoxic if you are unable to excrete it through the kidneys.
In this way it can intoxicate you causing vomiting, uncontrollable hiccups, weakness, agitation, convulsions and even death. So avoid carambola. Did you like the video?
