How is oil extracted and how is it processed? Hey Engineering Lovers, my name is Gustavo Pereira and today I'm going to show you, in a nutshell, how oil extraction and processing is done. I'm sure you've used some petroleum derivative during your life, be it plastics, gasoline, diesel, solvents and even went over asphalt.
But before these products reach general use, they have to go through lengthy processes, starting with extraction Oil extraction is carried out in three main stages: exploration, drilling and production. In the exploration stage, oil companies look for new oil deposits using technologies such as seismology, geology and data analysis. Once an oil deposit is found, drilling is carried out to create oil wells.
This drilling can be done both on land and at sea. Finally, oil is extracted from the reserve using pumps. It is then processed to remove impurities and separated into different fractions such as gasoline, diesel and kerosene.
But let's start at the beginning. Oil exploration is the first phase of the oil extraction process and aims to identify new oil deposits. The first thing to do is data analysis.
Oil companies collect geological, seismological and geophysical data to identify potentially oil-rich areas. After this analysis, surface prospecting is carried out, which may include the use of equipment to collect soil and rock samples. If prospecting indicates the existence of oil, drilling is carried out to obtain more information about the reserve, including its location, size and quality.
Information collected during exploration is analyzed and evaluated to determine if the reserve is economically viable and worth continuing with drilling. Oil exploration is a complex and expensive process that requires advanced technical and technological knowledge. However, it is a critical step to ensure the continuity of oil production and the satisfaction of demand for fossil fuels.
Once a location with exploitable resources has been identified, we move on to the next phase, which is drilling. Drlling oil wells is the second phase of the oil extraction process and aims to create a path for oil to flow from the reserve to the surface. First, before drilling begins, detailed planning is carried out to ensure the safety, efficiency and viability of the operation.
After that, if drilling is to be carried out at sea, it is necessary to install a drilling rig , which includes equipment to support the drilling process and the crew involved. The actual drilling starts with creating a drill surface, followed by the actual drilling, which can take several months or even years, depending on the depth and location of the deposit. Once the well is drilled, casing is installed to ensure well integrity and prevent leaks.
Finally, a test is carried out to assess the quality and quantity of oil present in the well, and production is started if the assessment is positive. Drlling oil wells is also a complex and expensive operation that requires specialized equipment and highly trained personnel. Well, as you can see, extracting oil is not as simple as drilling a hole and squirting out oil, as drilling oil wells presents many challenges.
Aspects such as the safety and reliability of the operation have to be taken into account. And in addition to involving risks in the operation, it also involves problems and risks for the environment. Therefore, it is important to ensure strict safety measures to prevent accidents and leaks.
The impacts it can have on the environment can include water and air pollution, loss of natural habitats and climate change. It is important to ensure environmental protection measures to minimize these impacts. It is a step that requires advanced technologies to deal with technical challenges, such as drilling in deep water or in difficult terrain.
In addition, it is necessary to invest in technologies to increase drilling efficiency and safety. And it's also subject to strict regulations, including environmental and safety laws. It is important to comply with these regulations to ensure safety, environmental protection and social responsibility.
These challenges require a thoughtful and thoughtful approach to ensuring the safety, environmental protection and financial viability of drilling oil wells. Once drilled, we start producing. Oil production involves several processes, which can be summarized in three main stages: separation, treatment and refining.
In separation, crude oil is separated into smaller components such as water, gas and liquids. This is done using a series of pressure and centrifugal separators. In the treatment step, the separated components are treated to remove impurities such as sand, silt and other contaminants.
This is done using dehydration, deleveraging and deodorization processes. Lastly we have refining, where crude oil is refined into useful products. This is done using a number of chemical processes such as distillation, reforming, hydrocracking and hydrotreating.
But this is not as simple as it seems. The oil refining stage is where crude oil is transformed into final products such as gasoline, diesel, kerosene, lubricants and others. The main objective of refining is to separate the components of crude oil based on their physical and chemical differences.
Refining usually starts with fractional distillation, where crude oil is heated to high temperatures in a distillation column to separate its components. Each component has a different evaporation temperature, which causes them to evaporate and condense at different points in the distillation column. This allows components to be separated into fractions with similar properties.
After fractional distillation, other processes such as catalytic reforming, hydrocracking, alkylenation and isomerization can be used to improve the quality of products and increase their efficiency. Refining is a critical step in oil production and requires a large amount of energy and investment in technology. In addition, refining generates a significant amount of hazardous emissions and waste, including greenhouse gases, toxic wastewater and hazardous solid waste, which also requires stringent environmental protection measures and investments in cleaner technologies.
In addition to these main processes, oil production can also involve the generation of electrical energy to power operations due to the high demand for energy, the disposal of waste and the reuse of water to minimize the environmental impact. It is important to highlight that oil production is highly regulated and that oil companies must follow strict standards of safety, environmental protection and social responsibility. For these reasons, it is important for oil companies to implement responsible and sustainable practices to minimize the environmental impact of oil exploration.
And you? Did you already know how this oil extraction process worked? Who knows, maybe Petrobras wants to sponsor us to show you how the refining process works, which is right next door.
