hi welcome to briona's pickleball my name is jordan briones and in today's video we're going to talk about the two major things that causes players to pop up the ball you're not going to want to miss this so now let's jump right in all right so actually i was working with a student the other day and she had a big problem with popping up the ball up at the non-volley zone so like i said in the intro in this video we are going to go over the two reasons why people pop up the ball and
we're going to work through some solutions and we're also going to go over how to fix it so let's show you now alright so the first problem i see when players are popping up balls is that they are over extending or over reaching well beyond their non-volley zone line so they are actually trying to take every single ball out of the air now there is a time in place to take balls out of the air obviously taking balls as a volley up at the non-volley zone line really takes time away from that opponent and you
can also flick and attack balls when you are taking them out of the air and kind of surprise your opponent but if you are overreaching like so there's going to be some point where taking volleys out of the air is out of your comfort zone and then you're more vulnerable to popping up the ball or missing into the net [Music] uh [Music] all right so if that's happening to you you are probably just overextending and reaching too far in front of the non-volley zone so remember i want to have a good athletic stance my chest
facing forward and a good strong foundation in my legs and i don't really want to be bending way over i want to be able to get low within the arms reach and not really i don't want to really be extending more than that so my comfort zone here should should be right around this area you can see i could hit everything very comfortably right here and right here anything further than that just let the ball bounce let it come to you and then hit it so now katrina is purposely going to send me shorter dinks
and then also a little bit deeper ones so that i can work on my decision making if i should just let the ball drop and then take it after the bounce or if it's in my comfort zone and then i can just easily comfortably volley it back and stay in good position so that one right there that one right there those were both in my comfort zone i'm not over reaching or overextending for those two here i'm gonna step in on that one okay i'm gonna let that one drop i don't need to bend down
lower than i need to okay send me some deeper ones too there that was comfortable that was definitely comfortable there okay that was two alright so you definitely want to find a happy medium there you don't want to be overextending over reaching because that's when you can be hitting balls into the net or popping them up and you also don't want to keep getting pushed back all right so definitely practice that volley dink but make sure you're in a very balanced and comfortable position up at the non-volleys online hi if you're really liking this content
go ahead and give this video a like it really helps us out now let's get right back to the video alright so now let's jump into the second reason why i see lots and lots of players popping up the ball and it really comes down to their late decision making now specifically we're talking about when you are up at the non-volleys online and your opponent is hitting you deeper dinks closer or beyond this non-volley zone line now as you can see here let's just hit regular things here any things that drop in front of me
those are very very easy to handle because i know my contact point will be out in front i'm not going to be jammed rushed or stretched these are very easy things to handle now when you play better players they're going to be forcing you to make decisions they're going to be forcing balls at your feet and now you have to make the decision whether to volley that ball or to let it bounce or sometimes you have to take a step back so that you can still hit it out in front of you so let me
quickly show you what happens when you make last minute decisions and you don't volley it or you don't take a step back and hit it and now you're contacting the ball beside you and late [Music] [Applause] [Music] [Applause] [Music] [Music] all right there you saw some late decision making the ball is coming closer and closer to my feet and i didn't choose to volley it and now i'm letting it go behind me and now i'm contacting the ball right beside me or even behind me so now i'm using my wrist and i'm doing anything i
can to get that ball over and now i lose control it's at the net or it's popped up for my opponent to put it away so you can go out there with a partner and just train this and drill this and try to make faster decisions now the first thing i'm looking for is to volley the ball now if it's too shallow like i said earlier we don't want to overreach and the ball is now just traveling further and further at my feet what i can do is i could hit a drop step dink so
as that ball is traveling closer to my feet i'm just going to slightly back up with my right leg on my righty and then now instead of contacting the ball if it bounces close here instead of contacting here on the side of me i could drop step back and then my contact point could still i could keep it in front of me and then i'm back here same thing on my backhand side if it comes over here instead of i didn't volley dink it and it's still coming close to my feet here and it's going
beyond instead of me contacting you late now all i have to do is drop step back with my left foot now i can contact it out in front and keep my contact point out in front all right so now we're going to think again she's going to send me some deeper dinks and i'm going to use the step back think or drop step thing all right here we go just like that okay i've evolved it all right so you may have been told in the past never back up off the non-volley zone line you never
want to give up ground it's totally okay as long as you are getting back up there okay the last thing that you want to do is hit that step back think and then now you're falling further and further behind off the line and then they have all this room to attack you all the area in front of you if you have to hit a step back dink hit that dink and come close right back up at the non volleys online all right we'll do a couple more keep my contact point out in front i volley
that one see even though i step way back there i'm still right back up at the line sometimes your decision making will be a little off so there might be balls that go deeper than you thought or more shallow than you thought so you have to make a last-minute adjustment as you saw on that last one i didn't choose the volley dink it and that dink is coming back so i had to step back do a pretty large step back try to hit that ball in my comfort zone contact the ball out in front and
then i could now proceed and get back up to the non-volleys online now we'll do a couple more [Applause] [Applause] all right so now you know that you can step back use a step back think then keep that contact point out in front then after that think make sure that you step right back up to that non-volley zone line thank you for watching this video we hope that you found it very helpful and we'll see you in the next [Music] my video cause you're in my space
