Doc Holiday was a man of many titles you could call him a dentist a deputy or an outlaw he also played a pivotal role in one of the most iconic Wild West battles on October 26th 1881 the legendary Doc Holiday has inspired numerous books TV shows movies and even songs yet amidst the tales the question lingers how true are the stories about him in today's video we'll dive into the true story behind the Tom Stone Legend and the real Doc Holiday will give you chills a wartime childhood if you ever wondered what doc holiday's childhood
was like you would be surprised to learn that it was filled with war and conflict his real name was John Henry holiday and was born in Griffin Georgia on August 14 1851 to Henry Burrow's holiday and Alice Jane holiday Doc's mother was a southern Beauty and his father was a druggist planter and soldier who served served in the Mexican-American War and the American Civil War Henry holiday Rose to the rank of major during the Civil War but sickness made him to resign his Commission in 1862 two years later he moved his family to valdasta Georgia
near the Florida Line due to the threat of Union troops invading soon the holiday family became prominent in the community and Doc's mother did her best to shelter him from the traumas of wartime living meanwhile in 1876 his father was elected mayor which marked a time of elevation for the man who had earned his Mark of recognition unfortunately Doc's mother died on September 16 1866 after a long history with tuberculosis her death was a terrible blow to the 15-year-old Doc Holiday as he and his mother had been very close it did not help that his
father married Rachel Martin only 3 months later on December 18 1866 finnally enough Rachel was only a few years older than Doc Holiday back then furthermore Doc Holiday did have an adoptive brother named Francisco whom his father brought home after the Mexican-American War sadly holiday's adoptive brother also succumbed to tuberculosis and soon he too learned that he suffered from the disease and was given only a few months to live it seems the family has a known history of tuberculosis don't you think a brilliant mind given his reputation you might think that Doc Holiday was an
unruly child but that was far from true he was quite gentle and easygoing during his childhood days as a child holiday actually suffered from speech impediments and a cleft pallet he overcame his disabilities however after corrective surgery and hours of lessons from his mother it was recorded that holiday was an exemplary student he attended Valdosta Institute while only a teenager and devoured rhetoric mathematics and history he also became fluent in Latin French and ancient Greek at just 20 years old holiday became a doctor of dental surgery after studying at the Pennsylvania College of Dental Surgery
meanwhile holiday graduated 5 months before his 21st birthday so the school held his degree until he turned 21 which was the minimum age required to practice Dentistry later on he moved to St Louis Missouri so he could work as an assistant for his classmate August Jameson fuches Jr less than 4 months later he relocated to Atlanta where he joined a dental practice meanwhile he lived with his uncle and his family so he could begin to build up his dental practice as fate would have it a few weeks before Holiday's birthday a renowned dentist named Arthur
Ford advertised in the Atlanta papers that holiday would substitute for him while Ford was attending Dental meetings that was indeed a turning point in Doc holiday's career path a risk taker subsequently Doc Holiday relocated to Dallas and teamed up with a family friend Dr John Seager their exceptional dental work earned them prestigious awards at the annual Fair of the north Texas agricultural mechanical and bloodstock Association at the Dallas County Fair they clinched all three honors for best set of teeth in Gold best in vulcanized rubber and best set of artificial teeth and dental wear situated
along Elm Street between market and Austin streets their office thrived until they dissolved the practice on March 2 1874 post dissolution holiday established his own practice above the Dallas County Bank at the corner of Maine and Lamar streets despite his persistent cough spells due to tuberculosis holiday discovered his knack for gambling eventually making it his primary source of income unfortunately on May 12 1874 holiday faced legal issues when he and 12 others were indicted in Dallas for illegal gambling likewise in January 1875 he was arrested after a gunfire exchange with Saloon keeper Charles Austin but
fortunately no one was injured so he was found not guilty later on holiday moved his offices to Dennis and Texas but after a gambling fine in Dallas he decided to leave the state that was a time you would think he need needed a new Direction in his life a new Direction following the stage routes and gambling at towns and army outposts along the way doc headed to Denver Colorado during the summer of 1875 he settled in Denver under the Alias Tom Macky and found work as a pharaoh dealer for John AB bab's theater kique at
357 Blake Street while he was there he got into an argument with Bud Ryan a well-known and tough Gambler they drew knives and fought and holiday left Ryan seriously wounded as time went on holiday left when he learned about gold being discovered in Wyoming on February 5 1876 he arrived in Cheyenne Wyoming he found work as a dealer for bab's partner Thomas Miller who owned the Bella Union Saloon in the Autumn of 1876 Miller moved the Bella Union to Deadwood South Dakota sight of the gold rush in the Dakota territory and holiday went with him
in 1877 holiday returned to Cheyenne then Denver and eventually to Kansas where he visited an aunt when he left Kansas he went to Breen Ridge Texas where he gambled in that same year after a disagreement with Gambler Henry KH holiday beat him repeatedly with his walking stick both men were arrested and fined but Khan was not finished later that same day he shot and seriously wounded the unarmed holiday later on the Dallas weekly Herald incorrectly reported that holiday had been killed his cousin George Henry holiday moved West to help him recover once healed holiday relocated
to Fort in Texas where he would meet some sets of people that would change his life entirely the Fateful friendships of John shany's Saloon Doc Holiday first met Mary Katherine Big noos Kate horony in a bar the only woman whom he allegedly had a romantic relationship with while dealing cards at John shany's Saloon holiday crossed paths with horony who worked as a dance hall girl and a prostitute in her holiday found a perfect partner tough tenacious and possessing a temper that that matched his own it was at John shany's Saloon that Doc Holiday also had
an alliance with Lawman Wyatt her her pursuing train robber Dave rudaba from Dodge City Kansas sought holiday's insights as a card dealer with knowledge of the local scene meanwhile Doc Holiday sharing valuable information played a pivotal role in helping her ultimately leading to the capture of rudaba hence a pivotal friendship unfolded following a Troublesome incident in Fort Griffin holiday and horony followed her to Dodge City attempting a more conventional path Doc Holiday ventured into respectability by establishing a dental practice unfortunately holay and horony had several conflicts leading to her departure and Doc's return to gambling
however as one friendship waned another strengthened in the Long Branch Saloon in Dodge City one night a group of Rowdy Cowboys disrupted the piece heckling customers including Doc Holiday and Wyatt her a past encounter fueled one Cowboy to lament saying that her should prey and jerk his gun because his time has come before anyone could react Doc Holiday swiftly drew his revolver and pressed it against the Cowboy's head that was quite a bizarre scene if you may ask meanwhile Wyatt ER later credited this moment as the Genesis of their friendship recalling that holiday had come
to his rescue during his tenure as city marshal in Dodge City Kansas saving him from Desperado later on in late 1879 Wyatt her opted to join his brothers Virgil and Morgan in the Arizona mining town of Tombstone with Doc Holiday not far behind it seemed their friendship was already getting stronger as they seemed to move along well since the incident at the bat however wherever doc went trouble seemed to follow and it certainly caught up with him in Tombstone Doc Holiday and his encounters with the her brothers Dodge wasn't a Wild Frontier Town for too
long by 18179 it had cleaned up its act and became too proper for the folks who had been around during its Rowdy beginnings people felt it was time to pack up and head to places where the civilizing touch of the railroad hadn't reached yet places where the real money was flowing now let's talk about Holiday by this point he had quite the reputation not just for his gambling skills which was his job by the way but also as a quick draw gunfighter his connection with Wyatt her and the her brothers especially Morgan and Virgil opened
up a new chapter for him in September 1880 holiday rolled into the silver mining boom town of Tombstone Arizona territory but before that he made a quick pit stop in Prescott to shore up his finances the hers had been holding it down in Tombstone since December 1879 and some stories say they called for holiday when things got dicey in their Feud with the cowboy faction once in Tombstone holiday didn't waste any time getting involved in the local scene he found himself in the middle of the political drama and violence that eventually led to the infamous
gunfight at the OK Corral in October 188 1 and that's where things really started heating up events had escalated after a stage coach robbery and murder in 1881 in benenson Arizona holiday got tangled up in the mess and his buddy Wyatt ER decided to play superhero Wyatt tried to smooth things over by attempting to grease the palms of cowboy rival Ike Clanton why well to clear holiday's name and let's be real to keep himself out of the heat too while Wyatt was cooking up his plan rival Sheriff Johnny beehan spotted an opening subsequent holiday's ex-partner
horony after a disagreement with him ended up in Bean's company he was all ears offering a sympathetic shoulder and some drinks to drown her sorrows before you know it he had got Kate signing an affidavit pinning the guilt on holiday meanwhile whyatt's plot takes a turn with Kate's signed confession in Bean's pocket her decided clanton's help wasn't needed after all so off to trial holiday goes but it wasn't game over for Doc Holiday thanks to a twist of fate Kate flipped the script taking back everything she spilled to be in thereafter charges dropped and the
case was closed but this wasn't a fairy tale the Cowboys feeling some type of way about the hers and holiday started throwing around threats it was a real life showdown in the making the gunfight happened in the vacant lot and street immediately next to fly's boarding house where holiday had a room the day after a late night argument between holiday and Ike Clanton meanwhile the Clanton and mcor's all gathered in a place before being fronted by the hers and holiday well he was probably thinking they're there to settle the score aiming straight for him according
to someone who saw the whole thing unfold the brawl kicked off when Doc Holiday armed with a flashy nickel-plated pistol and emitting some odd smoke may have initiated the confrontation despite Marshall Virgil her's efforts to peacefully disarm the Cowboys it seems holiday may have been the one to start the confrontation holiday entered the fry carrying Virgil's coach gun a gift from her just before the fight cleverly concealed under his long coat Virgil her trying not to cause panic in Tombstone citizens and the clantons and mcores opted not to carry visible weapons however this strategy backfired
while Virgil used a walking stick holiday or someone very likely to be him reportedly jabbed a cowboy in the chest with the shotgun before stepping back soon after holiday used the same weapon to fatally shoot Tom mcclory with a chest full of Buckshot this incident likely occurred early in the fight before holiday even fired a pistol the details of how the Slender and ailing holiday managed to wield both a pistol and a double barreled shotgun simultaneously during the brawl remain a subject of speculation following an inquiry and a legal hearing it was determined that the
shootout involving holiday and the hers wasn't a criminal act however the town was still buzzing with talk about the group's controversial use of violence her Vendetta ride just when you thought the whole Saga had wrapped up things grew worse in Tombstone first Virgil her got am ambushed and seriously messed up in December 1881 and if that wasn't enough Morgan her got ambushed and lost his life in March 1882 meanwhile Witnesses pointed fingers at some cowboys for shooting Virgil on December 27 1881 and knocking off Morgan on March 19 1882 there was even some other evidence
hinting that they were up to no good after Virgil got hurt Wyatt her got himself a new job as a deputy United State Marshall he roped in Holiday Warren her Sherman mcmas and this guy nicknamed Turkey Creek Jack Johnson to help out when Morgan got killed Wyatt and his gang stepped up their game they made sure Virgil and his wife Ally could catch a train to Colton California where his dad lived so Virgil could heal up from that nasty shotgun wound but things got wild in Tucson on March 20 1882 they allegedly spotted Frank Stillwell
and Ike Clanton hiding by the railroad cars ready to pounce and finish off Virgil come Dawn they found Stillwell's Body by the tracks full of Buckshot and bullet holes Wyatt later spilled the beans that he took him out with a shotgun talk about a wild ride meanwhile Tucson Justice of the Peace Charles Meyer issued arrest warrants for five of the her party including holiday later on they returned briefly to Tombstone where they were joined by Texas Jack Vermilion and possibly others on the morning of the next day a portion of the her posi including Wyatt
Warren holiday Sherman McMaster and Turkey Creek Johnson rode about 16 kilometer East to Pete Spence's Ranch to a wood cutting camp located off the kirawa road below the South pass of the Dragon mountains according to Theodore Judah who witnessed events at the wood Camp the ER posi arrived around 11:00 a.m. in the morning and asked for Spence and Florentino Indian Charlie Cruz they learned Spence was in jail and that Cruz was cutting wood nearby they followed the direction Judah indicated and he soon heard a dozen or so shots so when Cruz did not return the
next morning Judah went looking looking for him and found his body full of bullet holes that's quite outrageous don't you think gunfight at Iron Springs moving on from the previous events that occurred you would likely think that's all about the chilling Adventures of Doc Holiday with the her brothers but there's more 2 Days Later her's crew was on the Move heading to Iron Springs nestled in the wetstone mountains the game plan was to meet up with Charlie Smith the guy expected to roll in a cool 1,000 from their supporters back in Tombstone with Wyatt and
holiday in the lead the six lawmen surmounted a small rise overlooking the Springs guess what they stumble upon eight Cowboys camping there talk about a surprise now the interesting part is only Wyatt ER and holiday left any record of what went down Curly Bill one of the Cowboys spotted Wyatt in the lead and wasted no time grabbing his shotgun firing right at him chaos ensued as the other Cowboys pulled out their weapons and started shooting her had to get off his horse armed with his shotgun here's where it gets wild Texas Jack vermillion's horse got
shot and fell on him trapping his leg and wedging his rifle underneath talk about a sticky situation with no good hiding spots holiday Johnson and McMaster had to beat a retreat meanwhile her wasn't about to let curlyy Bill have the last say he fired back with his trusty shotgun aiming straight at Curly's chest and you won't believe it her later claimed he darn near cut him in half Curly Bill took a dive right into the water by the spring and checked out permanently now the Cowboys weren't just going to stand there twiddling their thumbs they
let loose a barrage of shots but the only casualty in the her crew was vermilion's poor horse it bit the dust Wyatt being the Quick Draw he was nailed Johnny Barnes in the chest and tagged Milt Hicks in the arm talk about a wild west shootout Vermillion in a tight spot trying to get his rifle from under his Fallen horse basically turned himself into a moving Target for the cowboy boy bullets but fear not Doc Holiday swooped in like a hero helping Vermilion find some cover Wyatt had his own set of problems trying to mount
his horse was a struggle thanks to his cartridge belt playing a game of slip and slide down his legs the bullets were flying like crazy Wyatt's long coat ended up being a bullet magnet getting pierced on both sides one even hit his boot heel and his saddle horn got a fiery kiss to just narrowly missing Wyatt after some heroic dodging Wyatt finally hopped on his horse and high tailed it out of there McMaster not to be left out got a little love tap from a bullet that sliced through the straps of his field glasses talk
about an epic showdown her and holiday part company so after all the craziness at Iron Springs Doc Holiday and four other posi members found themselves in a bit of a pickle with warrants for Stillwell's demise hanging over their heads not the best situation right well they decided to hight tail it out of Arizona making a beine for New Mexico territory and then on to Colorado now now here's the twist Wyatt ER and holiday once referred to as thieves hit a rough patch a serious disagreement popped up and they decided to go their separate ways in
Albuquerque during that period Wyatt and holiday were sitting down at Fat Charlie's The Retreat restaurant in Albuquerque chowing down but then things took a turn holiday for some reason dropped a comment about her turning into a damn Jew boy well that lit a fire under Wyatt he got all steamed up threw a fit and stormed out and just like that the dynamic Duo became a thing of the past talk about a wild ride from the wild west meanwhile IR was staying at Henry and jaffa's place in New albquerque who was a well-known businessman and also
the president of the Board of Trade in the city Jaffa who happened to be Jewish hosted her in his home according to a letter from ooto during his stay her showed respect for Jewish tradition by touching the muuza upon entering jafa's home in otero's account jafa shared with him that her's woman was a Jewish her strong reaction to holiday's ethnic insult suggests that Wyatt her's relationship with Josephine Marcus might have been more significant at that time than what is commonly known final days and death holiday spent the later part of his life in Colorado following
a stint in Leadville the High Altitude there took a toll on his health and it seems like his gambling prowess suffered as well the west where he had honed his skills and found success was changing rapidly due to urbanization in 1887 holiday prematurely aged and in poor health made his way to the hotel Glennwood near the hot springs of Glennwood Springs Colorado hoping to benefit from the healing properties of the waters he might have inadvertently worsened his condition due to the sulfurous fumes from the spring in his final moments holiday requested a sip of whiskey
and found Amusement in looking at his bootless feet as he passed away no one had ever expected him to die in bed with his boots off his reported last words were this is funny contrary to popular belief Wyatt her wasn't there when holiday died and only learned of his passing months later holiday gave up the ghost on November 8th 1887 holiday's gravestone is located in Lynwood Cemetery offering a view of Glennwood Springs however there's some disagreement about whether he's truly buried in the marked grave or even in that Cemetery holiday passed away in winter when
the ground was frozen and he was likely buried on the same day possibly in a temporary grave this initial resting place may not have been in the old Cemetery which was on a challenging Road up the mountain it's conceivable that his body was never moved later on but the actual facts are unclear because no attempt has been made to dig up and examine the grave record of violence historical accounts often agree that holiday was quick on the draw with a pistol but his aim wasn't always spoton in three out of his four recorded pistol confrontations
he wounded one opponent Billy Allen in the arm grazed another Charles white on the scalp and completely missed a saloon keeper named Charles Austin shortly after arriving in Tombstone in 1880 a Tipsy holiday accidentally shot Milt Joyce the owner of the Oriental Saloon in the hand and his bartender Parker in the toe neither of whom were the original targets of holiday's dispute holiday faced a fine for assault and battery due to this incident despite holiday being credited with shooting numerous unnamed men to death in popular folklore there is no contemporary EV evidence in newspapers or
legal records to support these claims except for the case of Mike Gordon in 1879 the same lack of evidence applies to the stories of holiday engaging in knife fights as mentioned by early biographers it's wise to approach these colorful tales with a degree of skepticism publicly holiday could be as Fierce as was needed for a Gambling Man to earn respect in Tombstone in January 1882 he told Johnny Ringo as recorded by diarist Parsons all I want of you is 10 paces out in the street he and Ringo were prevented from having the gunfight only by
the tombstone police which did not include the hers at the time who arrested them both holiday's role in the deaths of Frank Stillwell and the other three men killed on the her Vendetta ride remains uncertain but he was present at the events holiday is probably the second shooter of Stillwell he killed Tom mcclory and either holiday or Morgan her fired the second bullet that ended the life of Frank mcclory talk about an outrageous moment his Legacy Doc Holiday was a real icon from the wild days of the American Old West you can't help but connect
him to Wyatt her and that Infamous gunfight at the OK Corral their friendship is basically legendary in the world of westerns Doc Holiday is the classic sidekick the kind you see in those cowboy flicks he's like the deputy who's always got Wyatts back no matter what crazy stuff they're facing like that showdown at the okay Corral and the whole her Vendetta Saga through all the chaos violence and tough times doc holiday stuck it out with Wyatt creating this picture perfect image of loyalty and friendship so whenever you see Doc Holiday and Wyatt her together on
screen it's like a symbol of true friendship and Brotherhood in the Rough and Tumble days of the Wild West they've become this modern-day emblem of sticking by your buddy no matter how Wild the ride gets in Fayetville Georgia you'll find the home of Doc holiday's Uncle proudly marked with a historical sign and guess what there's a cool life-sized statue of holiday and derp crafted by Sculptor Dan Bates Standing Tall at the historic railroad Depot in Tucson Arizona they dedicated it on March 20 2005 marking the 122nd anniversary of Wyatt ER taking down Frank Stillwell the
statues right there on the train platform right where the action went down now let's talk about celebrations in Griffin Georgia they throw a shind dig called Doc Holiday days every year celebrating the birthplace of our Wild West legend over in Valdosta Georgia they even had a Doc Holiday lookalike contest back in January 2010 all part of their CES centennial celebration and hold on Tombstone Arizona knows how to throw a party too since 2017 they've been hosting doc holidays every second weekend of August it's got everything gunfights a parade and even a Doc Holiday lookalike contest
it's like a wild west Extravaganza to honor the gunfighter dentist himself thank you for watching this video see you in the next one
