Let's uncover the secrets of this incredible lioness together! Botswana, Okavango Delta region – Africa. Between 2009 and 2011, National Geographic's lens captured a story that would redefine our understanding of lion behavior.
The documentary “The Last Lions”, directed by renowned cinematographer Dereck Joubert, not only won numerous awards, but also brought to light the alarming decline in the lion population over the last 50 years. At the center of this narrative is MaDiTau, a lioness whose determination and maternal instincts lead her to defy all odds to protect her cubs. Their journey is a testament to the unwavering strength of nature and the complex dynamics that govern wildlife.
When a lioness begins to orchestrate her actions to protect those who still depend on her, the optics of nature are changed and perhaps what we call Survival Instinct can be termed a feeling similar to what we know as love. The Beginning of a Dangerous Journey On the banks of the Okavango River, two prides of lions coexisted in fragile peace. Pushed out of their original territories by human expansion, these cats faced increasing challenges.
Legal and illegal hunting has drastically reduced the availability of prey, intensifying competition between groups. Amidst this tension, one of the dominant males decided to expand his dominance. Out of hunger and the need to secure resources for his own band, he fought a fierce battle against the leader of the rival group.
The result was devastating: the defeated leader was expelled, and succumbed soon after, leaving behind a widowed lioness and her three defenseless cubs. This lioness was MaDiTau, whose name means “Mother of Lions”. She knew that to preserve her own life under the new rule, she would have to submit to the victorious male.
However, this would mean the slaughter of their cubs, as male lions often eliminate the cubs of others to enforce their lineage. The Decision That Would Change Everything In an act of courage and defiance of the rules of nature, MaDiTau refused to submit. He decided to run away with his puppies, embarking on a journey full of danger and uncertainty.
Their only possible refuge was a small island in the center of the Okavango Delta, inhabited by buffalo. There, she could find food and a safe place to raise her offspring. However, there was a formidable obstacle: the river.
Lions, by instinct, avoid water, especially African rivers known to be home to deadly crocodiles. But MaDiTau had no choice. With a heavy heart but determined, she led her cubs to shore.
Crossing the river would be a supreme test of survival. As they swam, the inevitable happened: a crocodile emerged from the depths and grabbed one of the babies. Despair took over MaDiTau.
She tried to save him, but the aquatic predator was faster, disappearing into the murky waters with his prey. The pain of loss was immense, but the survival instinct spoke louder. MaDiTau knew she had to keep going to save the two remaining cubs.
Swallowing her grief, she encouraged them to swim with all their might to the safety of the island. Arriving on the island, MaDiTau faced a new set of challenges. Alone, she would have to hunt buffaloes, huge and dangerous animals, to feed herself and produce milk for her calves.
Each hunt was a risky battle. A serious injury could be fatal, not just for her, but also for her cubs who were completely dependent on her protection. In one of her hunts, despite being injured, she managed to kill a young buffalo.
The victory brought temporary relief, but it also attracted the unwanted attention of hyenas, always on the lookout to steal other people's prey. The Battle for Survival As MaDiTau struggled to establish a new home, the lionesses led by Silver Eye, an experienced female with a blind eye, did not give up in pursuit of the lone lioness. They crossed the river, determined to eliminate any threat to their territory and resources.
In a tense confrontation, MaDiTau managed to protect her cubs by hiding them among the rocks. However, the danger was far from over. The following day, the situation worsened.
A herd of buffalo surprised the invading lionesses, forcing them to flee directly toward MaDiTau's hideout. Silver Eye found MaDiTau's puppies and attacked without mercy. In an act of bravery, MaDiTau faced the leader and managed to expel her, protecting her offspring once again.
However, the constant pressure from predators and the need for food gave no respite. The hyenas, noticing the vulnerability of the lone lioness, began to follow her closely. MaDiTau often lost part of her hunts to these opportunists, unable to face them alone, as the hyenas were in greater numbers.
One morning, after a successful hunt, MaDiTau returned to the hideout only to discover that her cubs were not there. Panic took over. She searched frantically, calling for them.
After a harrowing hour, he found his female cub, scared but alive. However, the male cub was missing. While dealing with this new uncertainty, a herd of buffalo unexpectedly approached in what is known as a cattle stampede.
This happens when a large number of these animals run in a single formation, trampling everything in front of them. Even though she ran to protect the little cub, she was not unharmed and the young cub was seriously injured in her back and spine, preventing her from walking. Heartbroken, MaDiTau faced a painful decision.
Knowing that a wounded predator wouldn't survive long in the wild and that her cub probably wouldn't recover, she walked away, leaving her behind. The little girl would succumb in a few hours, the African jungle would take care of it. .
. The pain of this loss was overwhelming. .
. Maditau believed that her male cub had also been killed and now nothing else mattered to her. A Lone Lioness Without her cubs, MaDiTau was a lonely lioness in the midst of a hostile environment.
Sadness and anger steadied his steps. In an almost self-exterminating act, she attacked one of the largest buffalo on the island, perhaps hoping to find an end to her suffering. To her surprise, she survived.
Fate, however, had other plans. The Silver Eye lionesses had returned, and a final confrontation was inevitable. This time, MaDiTau did not back down.
In an intense battle, she faced Silver Eye and emerged victorious. With the leader defeated, the other lionesses recognized MaDiTau's strength and accepted her as their new leader. United, they formed a new band.
A band without a king. While hunting together, something miraculous happened. In the middle of chasing the buffalo, MaDiTau heard a familiar sound.
Her male cub, previously reported lost, was alive! The reunion was emotional. The young lion watched as his mother and new allies worked together, learning skills essential to his own survival.
A New Beginning Maditau was the leader of a pride and was reunited with her male cub. The lioness found a new reason to move forward. The adversaries of the past were now his companions, and together they protected the young man who could one day become the king among them.
MaDiTau's story makes us reflect on the extent to which the so-called animal survival instinct cannot merge with real feelings and even reach levels of intelligence and consciousness still unknown, or ignored, by us human beings.
