most doctors and dietitians think that the sugar found in fruit is somehow magical that it doesn't affect your blood sugar or your insulin levels and nothing could be further from the truth I'm dr. Kent berry a family physician with 20 years of clinical experience and in this video I'm going to tell you about the seven fruits that diabetics should avoid a diabetics body your liver in your pancreas they can't tell where the sugar come from if the sugar comes from Oreos and Chips Ahoy cookies or if it comes from bananas and grapes all your body
knows is that you've just flooded it with way too much sugar it's going to have to spike your insulin to deal with it and it's going to lead to high blood sugar high insulin levels and increased levels of inflammation so let's talk about these seven fruits and now I'm not saying that fruit is evil I'm not saying fruit is necessarily bad I think you can have fruit as an occasional treat if you're a diabetic and it's not the end of the world what I'm talking about here specifically is is the the advice you get from
doctors and dietitians that fruit should be part of your daily diet and as a diet as a diabetic that is just terrible advice and it's going to lead to worsening complications from your diabetes so let's jump into these seven fruits that you should only have very occasionally as a treat maybe on your birthday or anniversary they should not be part of a daily diabetics diet number one is bananas they are full of sugar and they're almost devoid of any meaningful nutrition you hear that they're a good source of potassium but actually avocado and dark green
leafy vegetables are much better sources of potassium avoid bananas if you can't number two is grapes if anybody's ever seen wild grapes they're tiny little bitter things over the last few hundred years we've bred and crossbred grapes to have no seeds and to be basically just little sacks of sugar and this goes for raisins as well these are high sugar treats that should be avoided by diabetics except on a very rare occasion number three is cherries again they've been grown crossbred over a hundreds of years to be very large sacks of sugar the you can
get all of the vitamins and minerals contained in a cherry from much healthier lower carbohydrate sources number four is papaya most people on the earth five thousand ten thousand years ago never saw a papaya now they're in every grocery store that does not mean they're healthy they're way too high in sugar for diabetics and they will spike your blood sugar every single time now I personally love the taste of all these fruits but as a former pre diabetic I know that if I eat too many of these too often it will spike my blood sugar
and lead to health problems number five is pineapple nothing tastes better than grilled pineapple but it is sky high and sugar it's going to spike your blood sugar in your insulin levels any of the nutrition in a pineapple you can get better from other sources that are much lower in carbohydrates number six is melons any of the melons are delicious no doubt but they are too high in carbohydrates too high in sugar for the average diabetic and should only be eaten on your birthday or Memorial Day Labor Day some something like that as a treat
like birthday cake diabetics should think of fruit as birthday cake you don't eat birthday cake every day nor should you eat fruit every day and then number seven is peaches here in the southern United States when the peaches are right they smell divine and taste delicious but they will spike your blood sugar off the charts there's not not enough meaningful nutrition in a peach to ever justify the blood sugar spikes that they will give you as a diabetic my goal for all the type 2 diabetics out there is to completely reverse your type 2 diabetes
that's absolutely doable with the ketogenic diet my goal for type 1 diabetics until they're secure is to keep your a 1 C as low normal as possible with the minimal use of insulin that you can get by with to keep a normal blood sugar I'm dr. berry I'll see you next time
