my tags make absolutely no sense I mean seriously look at them clearly there's something wrong with me it's nonsense absolute utter nonsense wait stara aren't you a manager at etsy's largest SEO company I am and because of this I constantly have sellers asking me why my own tags look like this while I still claim to be etsy's biggest SEO Authority on YouTube so today I'm breaking down exactly why my best tags are absolute nonsense and why you should use this strategy in your own shop as well for those who are new here my name is
Starla Moore founder of the handmade Alpha Academy for Etsy Sellers and manager rank.com etsy's most popular SEO toour and over the last 12 years I've run multiple Etsy shops with my newest being a bookish merch store where we sell officially licensed products for some of our favorite fantasy authors if you're curious about how legal licensing with authors Works be sure to check out this video up here but as one of the world's leading SEO coaches sellers constantly explore my own shop in order to spy on my strategies and experiments something I constantly do in order
to test theories that we put into active practice in our trainings and this always leads to the question from sellers why the heck do I use tags with no searches no clicks or astronomical competition I levels the reason is Broad matching and tag space optimization during the process of broad matching Etsy plays a fun little game of mix and match where they put words from your tags and titles together regardless of whether or not those words are next to each other and while getting an exact match is always ideal since exact matches result in stronger
keyword matching more times than not you'll be making more broad matches for example have you ever found a great keyword only to realize that it doesn't fit in your tag section in my own shop I'm officially licensed to sell merchandise for Fantasy author Sarah Maz and her most popular series Accord of thorns and Roses is a great keyword in terms of searches and competition levels unfortunately this term is too long for a tag though but by breaking the book title in two I'm able to Broad match for the entire phrase in the keyword phrase beige
wool chunky knit blanket we would need to break this term into beige wool and chunky knit blanket in this example we'd exact match for chunky knit blanket chunky knit knit blanket and beige wool we'd also exact match for all of these individual terms like chunky and knit and blanket these are our strongest keyword matches because these terms are contained within single tags and they're right next to each other but we'll also make a ton of broad matches including wool blanket beige blanket beige knit blanket wool knit blanket chunky blanket beige chunky blanket and so on
but that's not all broad matching also means that optimizing every character possible within single tags can help you to cast a larger net this means that in our beige wool and chunky knit blanket example we wouldn't need to enter any of these terms again such as throw blanket because we already are broad matching for the term blanket if we wanted to Broad match for the terms cozy blank blanket couch blanket and throw blanket we could simply enter the nonsense tag cozy couch throw if you were to analyze this search term it would essentially look like
a bad tag in reality it's a bridge between multiple tags it's a nonsense tag that serves as a broad matchable set of phrases when combined with other terms listed in your tags every time you add a new word into a tag you basically increase the number of combinations that you could be matching for both exact matches and broad matches this is why more nested words within tags will equal more opportunities to be discovered in search it's also why using single word tags is strongly discouraged and something we clearly point out at e- rank within our
listing audit tool because why waste the space when you could make your net even wider with more relevant Search terms here on my channel I try to make ET C SEO as easy as possible so that sellers like you can succeed without having to be a tech wizard so if Etsy SEO is still super confusing for you and you want to learn how to master it once and for all I recommend grabbing my free Etsy SE oodles toolbox linked up here this resource is loaded with courses videos and tutorials that will help you to build
