looking at the rocks you can determine whether the sedimentary rocks were formed in a high energy environment where water was moving rapidly or a lower energy water environment where the water was moving slowly or maybe not even moving losing it all the larger the particle the more water energy it takes to carry that and deposit it so there's there's a mountain stream not far from where I live and you go up there high in the mountains and there are big boulders of a meter or two and in size often or even much bigger there's just
a lot of these boulders you go farther downstream as this as the mountain stream continues it gets off and less steep as it goes down the mountain and there isn't enough energy to carry these larger boulders so they stop moving when the water moves rapidly it's able to carry large sand particles and it's even able to roll boulders along the bed of a stream or a some kind of a water course so here you can see the coarse grain sand but in it you can see pebbles and in some cases even maybe some large boulders
so these were carried along at the base of the stream and then deposited here so this would be an example of a deposit from a high energy environment where you had very rapidly moving water maybe some kind of a local flood that came and carried all of these boulders down the smaller boulders keep moving and then as the stream gets with the lower lower slope the particles get smaller and smaller because there is enough energy to carry the big ones so finally you get down to the to the valley and you just have fans of

moving when it was depositing the rocks and these things can be studied over a wide area so we can take all of North America and look at the distribution of the flow of currents and it seems like when these kinds of studies are done we find out that things are happening on a much larger scale than we would expect if if we were to study it today so if we look at what's happening on years today we see that generally sediments are accumulating in in area certain areas and then they're washing out into the ocean
and so on but we don't see things happening on a grand scale like continent wide scale but when we look in the fossil record and we study the flow of water over the surface of the earth it looks like things were happening on a much larger scale in rocks that we would consider deposited during the flood we find that there is an in general a common direction of these currents it over very large areas which you would not expect to be the case in our modern world you would expect random directions because rivers are going
in different directions and sediment is coming in from different sides of a lake and so there should be just random but that's not really the way it is in a good part of the Georgia call one of the one of the features that the surfaces of the earth reveals is is a in erosional process that's on a grand scale much bigger than we would expect from the processes we see going on today there are evidences of widespread erosion that seems to be only consistent with a global process so geography paleo geography in particular gives us

how rivers deposit sediment we can see how bodies of water move sediments around and how they get deposited and that's the way they interpret the ancient rocks that these processes we can see of happen today that those explain how the ancient rocks were deposited how the sediments in these rocks were deposited but when we when we look at the rocks themselves and compare it with these modern situations what we call modern analog there's a problem if you look at the much of a geologic column the older parts the lower two-thirds these rock layers and rock
