How do social media creators earn money? And how do they earn money? Ultimately, we earn money because of you.
So, I think we should come out and tell you the inner stories. For transparency and educational purposes. If you are a budding creator and stuck somewhere, then maybe you can learn something new from this video, implement it and grow.
In 2017, we started Labour Law Advisor and it has been 7 years now. Content creation is the full-time work of me and RJ. We are a small team of 12-15 people.
Mainly, we give awareness to labour laws, personal finance and scams. We have a following of around 6 million on YouTube and Instagram. From this, you can understand how rich we have become.
That's all I am going to tell you now. This is Money-Minded Mandeep. Welcome back to the channel.
[Intro Music] This video is sponsored by Odoo more on that later As a creator, you have different ways to earn money. And if you are a YouTuber, then the first way is YouTube Ad Revenue. That is, YouTube Partner Program.
Even today, when I tell someone that I am a YouTuber or I make YouTube videos, people ask the same question. Do you earn from YouTube? Or do you do something else?
You just keep making videos all day? Do you get any money? 4.
8 million subscribers. Do you earn in crores, bro? Money is not found on subscribers, nor is it found on the number of views but advertisements.
If you are watching a video and in the beginning, in the middle, in the end, if you see an ad somewhere, I will get 55% share of that ad. 45% share will be kept by YouTube. Okay, not everyone can earn.
You will have to be eligible to join the YouTube Partner Program. And many years ago, there was no eligibility criteria. You just put a video, the views will come, if the ad will come, then you will start seeing money in your AdSense account.
As soon as it cross $100, you can withdraw it. Then somewhere in the middle, the first condition came. When you had to cross 10,000 views on your channel, then your videos could be monetized.
Then in 2018, Logan Paul went to Japan and did something. And many brands felt that YouTube is not a safe place. There is no ad-friendly content there.
And our name will be spoiled by putting ads here. So it is said that this is why YouTube set new criteria. Now you needed 1000 subscribers and 4000 hours of watch time.
This whole fiasco is also called Adpocalypse. and recently, after the arrival of Shorts, YouTube revised the conditions again. Now there is an existing condition.
Apart from that, there is an alternate condition. If you fulfill any of these two, then you can be eligible. The second condition is that along with 1000 subscribers, You must have over 10 million views on all shorts combined now how does this program work?
If you saw an ad at the beginning of this video, sometimes unskippable and sometimes skippable after 5 seconds. It means you saw a pre-roll. If the ad came in the middle while I was talking, did it come?
It means it was a mid-roll. If you stay there even after the video ends and then the ad comes, it was a post-roll. Along with that, there are also display ads.
When YouTube collects the money of all these ads from the brand, then we get 55% of it. 45% is kept by YouTube. And this revenue depends on many factors.
The first factor is economy. Remember 2021-2022. There was a bull run in the market.
Interest rates fell by 4%. The home loan was getting 6%. Every startup was getting funding and the companies were doing IPO.
Where will the extra liquidity that came into the market go? Startups will do their marketing. A significant part of that marketing budget must have come on YouTube too.
And because of this, in 2021, one month went like this when our monthly ad revenue had crossed 10 lakh rupees from YouTube. The second factor is geography. Suppose you have a shoe brand.
You want to run an ad for the shoe in India and you want to run the same shoe ad in the US too, on YouTube Which ad will be cheaper for you? The answer is India's ad will be cheaper for you. The US ad will be very expensive for you.
The people there earn more, spend more, have more spending power, so the marketing budget there is also more. It means if our audience is watching the video sitting in the US, then the ads that will be shown to them will be expensive ads and they will increase our revenue. How much money does it take to run an ad?
We understand this from CPM, Cost Per Milli, which means the advertiser is spending how much money to show his ad to thousands of people. Now because the rate of all ads is not the same, it will depend on keywords, it will depend on other factors, and the rate of every ad is different. So we have the account of YouTube Studio, which is for creators, in that we see our CPM number.
So I opened our lifetime CPM in front of you. In this, we can clearly see that we were monetized in 2018. Before that, we worked in unemployment for 11 months.
And in the beginning, our CPM was around 70-80 rupees. Sometimes it used to touch 100 rupees. And in the aftermath of COVID, this CPM also went up to 50-60 rupees.
But if we look at the time after that, then this CPM started reaching around 150 rupees. And if we fast forward to today's date, then CPM averages around 200 rupees. Do you understand what this means?
Advertisers were giving money to show ads to thousands of people around 100 rupees before COVID, and around 200 rupees after COVID. So the cost has increased, the ad spend has increased, the startup has also received funding, and that data is also evident here. Now let me show you one more interesting thing.
So in the last 365 days, we have 91. 8% views from India. And in India, our CPM was 157.
84 on an average. Last 365 days. 0.
9% views came to us from the United States. And its CPM is literally 9-10 times. 1538 rupees.
Similarly, if someone is watching in Pakistan, 1. 1% people are watching from Pakistan, then Pakistan advertisers are spending only 69 rupees. Or advertisers are spending in Pakistan.
The third factor is industry and target audience. When brands run ads on YouTube, they target their ads by applying various filters. There is age-wise targeting, gender-wise targeting, state-wise, city-wise, locality-wise targeting, and keyword-wise targeting.
So think like this, if you want to run an ad on a keyword, and other brands also want to run ads on that keyword, then you will bid. And naturally, the cost of the ad will increase. This means that if I am making a video on a hot topic, i.
e. iPhone, then there will be more ads, and there will be more money for the ad. Meaning, if I am a vlogger.
. . Friends, this is the time to reveal something big.
Today I have fulfilled my childhood dream. By buying this red bullet worth 2. 5 lakh rupees.
Guys, eat ice cream in summer. Keep your mind calm. Some people have become very materialistic these days.
I have also bought a BMW, but I don't keep telling everyone that I have bought a BMW. No, eat ice cream and stay chill. So guys, we have reached Jaipur.
Now we have come to the temple. And Goti looks hungry. Isn't it, Goti?
Isn't it? Don't do this, brother. So we thought we will eat banana.
So now we are eating banana, guys. Goti, eat banana. Goti is eating banana.
Eat it. What happened? Eat it.
I am eating, brother. I am eating. I will show you a live example.
We had made a video. How LLA fooled national media. April Fool's prank gone wrong.
Let's see its ad revenue. About 1,39,000 views made an ad revenue of Rs. 10,500.
Now I will show you another video. Its title is 10 Hidden Conditions of Health Insurance. It has about 2,76,000 views.
You can say that the first video which had 1,30,000 views, these are slightly more than its double or double. So the income should also be double. But the income here is much more than double.
The double of Rs. 10,000 is Rs. 21,000.
But here the income is Rs. 35,500. Why this extra income?
Because its title was written as Health Insurance. Which becomes a very good ad-friendly keyword. But the first video, April Fool's, there have been some ads which have earned Rs.
10,500. Those are those ads which are generic ads. For example, Toothpaste, Bikaji Bhujia.
Such products which everyone uses. Those ads come. But not much targeted ads come.
And this is also a problem with vloggers. If their titles are like, Today I got gas trouble today my mom threw me out of the house. Today this and that happened.
So those are very generic titles. However, if there is a lifestyle vlogger who has cracked this, you can see his title. He will say, Today I bought BMW.
Then BMW becomes a keyword. Mercedes will also run ads on BMW. Today I bought Nike's shoes.
So basically, they keep moving towards materialism. Because then only money is earned on it. And people also see the same thing.
So in Rahul's Bullet Vlog, Bullet ad will definitely come. Along with that, Guns ad can also come in any other country. So on our YouTube channel, last month, that is, in April 2024, 52 million views came.
And on that, our ad revenue became around 4 lakh 8 thousand rupees. This is our share. Now you will say, even after 50 million views, so little money?
That is because the views that come on YouTube Shorts, a lot of revenue is made on that. Most of the revenue comes because of the ads that come on long videos. Shorts are posted daily.
And the frequency of long videos is weekly one. And we can also see its break-up. Due to long videos, 3 lakh 47 thousand was earned.
And in the same month, the contribution of Shorts was 50 thousand rupees. So if you want to get an idea on how much money is there on views, then I will show you an individual long video Just last month, I had made a video 6 reasons keeping you poor. You liked its thumbnail too.
Currently, it has 1 million views and its lifetime revenue is 1 lakh 45 thousand rupees. Let's call the creators of the other niche other than finance and ask them, how much was their revenue. sir, how are you?
Good sir, you tell me. How are you? Very good sir, everything is going well.
Oh, you don't know him? he is Gagan Chaudhary, India's most trusted automobile creator and my very good friend. So tell me one thing, what was your last month YouTube revenue?
my last month revenue on YouTube, should I tell you exactly or like this? Exact, screenshot, I mean, by showing on the camera. Oh, Okay.
Wait, Ammm. . .
Wait. Let me switch. So, see this, channel analytics and 1.
6 million views are here. nice. And in this, it has decreased, in the last 28 days, See.
No these are the subscribers. [Laughing] I said, how will it decrease this much? here, the views are 5.
1 million in the last 28 days and the revenue is 1,97,523. so, this is the average or this month has increased or decreased? no, this month, it is going with a little average.
basically, this tick means this is almost average. The views have decreased a little but the revenue has become average because whenever Mahindra's product comes, the revenue share increases a little because it has ads on top of it from some other company. So, it has become a little more.
otherwise, it should have been around 150-160. but this is around 197. So, is it like this that another brand's ad is coming on Mahindra's keyword?
yes, it comes. Meaning, like this time the comment is coming that when we play Mahindra 3XO video, getting ad of MG so, it happens Okay, that is good let's talk about second revenue source, Sponsorships. Now, what happens is that if a brand spends crores of rupees and makes a high-budget ad with a Bollywood actor, then it is less relatable for people.
you tell yourself, if Ajay Degman of SRK and Akshay Kumar will do an ad of Tobaco then you and I both know that two of them don't eat Tobaco but creators, on the other hand, eats Tobaco but creators, on the other hand, are made up of people like you and me. people like us watch our favorite creators with our choice and subscribe to them and follow them. Brands thought that instead of running random ads on YouTube, why don't we give money to the creators and promote our brand because their audience trusts them.
Sponsored videos are mainly of two types. The first is integrated video and the second is dedicated video. Integrated video means the usual content that I make, I will make that only.
In between, for one or two minutes, the ad break or the message of the sponsor I will tell it to my audience. Dedicated video means that we are not making our usual content, we are making a special video on the brand's request in which, not only for one or two minutes, we are promoting their product in the whole video If we want to do it ethically, then integrated video which we are making but it has one or two minutes of sponsored segment. we only verify that sponsored segment with the brand.
that too, so that we don't represent any wrong fact. now every brand doesn't like it because they want the whole video to be controlled by them. we work with the brand when the editorial control of the overall video is with us not with the brand.
the opinion and the education , that we are giving in the video should be our words not the brand's. For example, this video has a sponsor But, sponsors and all of you, are watching this video only after its first time release. Not that the sponsor has seen this video before.
I am telling you the picture only The reality is so bad that sometimes the script is given by the brand and they say just read it. And you must have noticed that many creators of gaming betting apps who are promoting them they also say their brand's slogans because a script comes in front of them and they read it. Now if we talk about, how much money is made then there is no right answer for this.
A big creator can take 1 lakh rupees to do an integrated video and a small creator in the same niche can take 15 lakh rupees for the same promotion This is exactly like, Stock Market where you can't figure out the exact value of stock Sadly, I can't tell you this number of LLA because this is confidential. I have to hide it from brands and agencies because they play games many times. I will explain this story later.
And if you are a budding creator then you think how many views you get on an average on a video. according to those views you have a range from 1 rupee per view to 5 rupees per view. This is not a rule or formula.
these are the numbers that everyone in the industry is charging. 1 rupee per view will be charged by those who have less credibility 5 rupees per view will be charged by those who have more credibility. And there are people charging more than 5 But, I'm sure by the time you get there By then you'll have figured out how much you want to charge.
We charge the highest in LLA or want to charge because we reject more brands than we promote. because of that people trust us and the brand knows that if we promote on LLA then our credibility will also increase. we have worked with many influencers but I think the kind of trust that LLA's followers have on LLA really shows because the conversion of leads the actual order placement from leads was absolutely the best from LLA compared to any other influencer in India.
The best part is, the LLA is very transparent in terms of what they want to do what they want to say what they don't want to say they don't do anything that will harm their customers or the audience. this is what LLA's worth this is what we deserve and this is what you deserve. This brings me to third source of income affiliate income.
But first, a small back story. in 2021 we got a great sponsor for the first time he said make 6 videos on life insurance we will give you 60,000 rupees per video. at that time we were out of our minds because we had never charged more than 60,000.
I made the first video and send it to the brand, for review The brand said why did you mention the names of other companies why did you say limited pay and return of premium wrong cut this part. So I said the part will be like this you take your money back. That video is on YouTube even today in which I told you how to pick the best insurance in an unbiased way.
but because of this unbiasedness we did a lot of harm now we thought we are refusing everyone how will we earn money. Then we made a strategy we will do what we have been doing that is we will tell you how to recognize bad insurance policy how to stay away from that How to buy a good policy? so that you can secure your family.
I got a lot of love from this strategy. I made a 43 minute long video on health insurance which was watched by 8 lakh people. There is no praise of any brand in it.
On the contrary, you will find only bad in it. But then we asked for support from you. It means, now you have to work.
If you think we have given you some value then go with our link to buy or compare the policy so that you can support us indirectly. You don't have to pay any extra money on doing this. on the contrary, in many scenarios you will get 10-20% discount.
not 20% but 10%. But we will get freedom to make videos. We don't have to become puppets of any brand.
We don't have to quote any brand's words to you. Bottom line, we refused every sponsor who wanted to control our script. And in insurance we made a rule that we will not promote any life or health insurance brand by taking sponsorship money.
If the company wants then all this mis-selling can be stopped. Why doesn't it happen? We always want to ask this question that's why we don't take money from any life or health insurance company.
Affiliate income This is a promotion but not sponsorship because in sponsorship the creator gets upfront money to make a video. there is nothing like this in affiliate because the brand didn't give me money to make this video. biggest example is Amazon Affiliate Program you must have seen many Tech youTubers for example Beebom they buy cool tech gadgets and make videos And then they gives the link of their store All the products are listed on that store and by clicking any product it will take you directly to Amazon's website.
if you buy that product then Beebom will get commission If you are creating content like the same niche whose products are available on Amazon So you can convert this into a great recurring monthly revenue stream. but, we are from finance Which of our products are on Amazon? so, that's why this program of Amazon won't work for us But, a few other things worked first, we started promoting the Demat account of stockbrokers in around 2020 mainly Zerodha and Upstox.
But there was a problem because even if someone opens a Demat account from our link Even after that, he will have to trade and generate brokerage We will get the commission of that brokerage Now because we have never promoted trading in 7 years So people opened a Demat account from our link But only about 1% people traded so we can say that an additional sponsor came in a month It is not such a big income but it does serve as a backbone Because sometimes small creators have this tension that next month new sponsors will come or not How will the salarians pay? Finally, one more revenue source which is most important to scale a creator is his own products Now you also have your own product and if you want to scale it online Then you will need an e-commerce store So for this, there is a simple, efficient and affordable platform called Odoo This is an open source ERP and CRM platform Where you get all the apps to manage all the operations of your business Just go to Odoo and click on start now it's free By adding the basic details of your business in just 4 easy steps You need to create a framework for a functional e-commerce website. Hello friend Drnk tea Jagruk Chai is the name of our product There was a little interest in this field So we thought why not we make a tea But it would be better if its story comes after the product is launched. Coming to digital products First of all, we made this And we have courses And these are very niche courses First of all, we made courses to prepare EPF and ESI challan( invoice) We made payroll processing courses Which were more useful for accountants and HR professionals After that, we widened the niche a little And made taxation related courses You all know Hacks to save tax for salaried employees For business professionals For freelancers and consultants We have different courses for all these And along with them, we also have masterclasses Real estate and capital gains masterclass is our Flagship masterclass Some people have been saying It's a little drops of heaven But whatever Regarding courses and masterclasses Our heart is full of pride Because our courses are so in-depth and easy to understand It is not possible for everyone in the industry to match that level Especially for our taxation courses We have our super CA Anoop Bhatia The dead undertaker also awakens from his teaching Not kidding Hello friends [Music] We have real feedback from students I mean not those paid AI generated comments Real feedback from our students And if someone has attended Then you can also write in the comments More than that We also have feedback from other creators Who themselves said That there is no match for your taxation courses Nobody does it better After that, we don't leave it Every Friday, there is a live Q&A in the community And the teacher himself comes and answers the Q&A In fact, if someone asks a question in our forums Then we definitely write the answer Apart from this, last year we also did a cohort Finance for teens In which we taught finance to children Not the finance of investing or stock market The finance that should be taught to children But unfortunately, it is not taught in their schools But that was a pilot project We did this cohort with 100 students The feedback of parents was very strong Which motivated us to scale it more But now we are figuring out What should be its proper model Because it is a cohort So it has live classes in batches So we want to solve this problem How to reach more children While maintaining the same impact That is, that one-on-one experience Children should get So if I give you a break up So sponsorship, affiliate, YouTube revenue This is 80% of our revenue And our own products are 20-25% And we have to reverse this Why do we have to do this So that we are less dependent on the outside world And can make better products for you more on our own products The problem with sponsorship, affiliate and YouTube revenue Is that if the market is going well If the companies have money Then that money will come to us too If the market is not going well Then it can be the other way around Some government's new rules or regulations Can cause a revenue stream to hit So this is the prime focus of any creator That how can he generate revenue from his own products So to shift this 20 and 80 We have also launched channel memberships Channel membership means The join button next to the subscribe button So by giving a nominal monthly subscription You can become an aware producer And in return we give some exclusive content To our aware producers Which has never been published outside There are also exclusive podcasts available in that And we also take feedback from them That what else can we improve We also consider their inputs And plan future content This is all about all types of income Let's come to the expenses Recently we have bought Sony FX3 This comes for 3. 5 lakh rupees Before this we had Sony A7S3 worth Rs 3 lakh rupees And had Sony A7C worth Rs 1.
5 lakh rupees And maybe had ZV-E10 worth Rs 60,000 rupees Then we have 2 lenses of Sigma 24-70 f2. 8 They come for 1 lakh rupees each 35mm f1. 4 85mm f1.
4 50mm f1. 8 What else do we have? 11mm f1.
8 Podcast mic, Audio interface Blackmagic 8M DJI wireless mic Rode wireless mic Key light, Fill light, Ring light Turn it on Gimbals Drnes And keep the drones out when we want to use it, we can't remember And what is the benefit of all this When the studio is not there To keep all these And to shoot these all. It cost Rs 2. 5 lakh to build Studio 1.
to make studio 3 Studio 2 is not there to make Studio 3 cost Rs 4 lakh And this is being shoot in 4K 10 bit 4:2:2, so, where will we store its 100GB files? So storage system of Rs 8 lakhs Means NAS (Satyanaash) really messed up Well, then how will it shoot If there is no team of production and post production So editor 1 Editor 2 Editor 3 Editor 4 Editor 5 How will the whole work start If there is no topic and script So writer 1 When did you come? I came first Writer 2 Writer 3 Writer 4 Sometimes you have to travel to make a video So hotel, Flight Food, Commute Now made a video Who will post Social media distribution Well, there are so many people, who will become their leader?
