the one fact that astounds me is that the majority of you are still studying in completely the wrong ways and it's not your fault because I was in the exact same place too but then with just three changes I went from someone that got average grades in high school to someone that scored in the top 1% in my University and then went on to become one of eight students that got chosen to transfer into Medical School through a highly competitive program my name is zayif I'm a fourth year medical student and again I'm not special
by any means I just experimented a lot and figured out how to be smart with the way I study and so in this video I'm going to give you those three big changes I made to my study process that then skyrocketed my efficiency and helped me score that well in that exam even when I was shorten time if you watch till the end and actually start incorporating these simple steps into your process I can guarantee never look at learning the same way again now straight away I need to address something very important if your exam
is in 3 days away and you have N9 or 10 topics to cover you cannot just sit there and read through your book and call it revision you can't just be making the notes please both of these things are slow they're both going to bore your brains out and you're never going to take anything in and don't lie this is what you're doing right now but that's okay this is what you start with the number one thing I changed was incorporating testing into my revision and not just doing a few questions here and there doing
a few practice papers but constant testing my entire revision method was testing myself as much as possible because at the time I read the signs behind it testing is what locks the information in your brain I watch Ali abdal videos I put that into my study routine I made it happen and guess what it worked so test before studying while studying and all you guessed it after studying as well now let me explain how I did that specifically for the exams that I did well in before starting to study a topic I did 10 to
20 multiple choice questions non-negotiable does not matter whether you study the topic before whether you get them all wrong whether it's uncomfortable you need to see where your understanding is lacking the point of this is to make your brain engage somehow with that material and figure it out actively so that when you're actually learning the material later on your mind's thinking oh this was what that question was talking about this is the answer to that this Gap links to this thing for these questions I'd recommend you use a question bank if you have that but
if you don't just AI generate them regardless just get it done and the testing doesn't stop there you do more of it during the studying as well what I would do is after every section or hard concept I read I would cover the slide try and think okay what was what was talked about what's been discussed in the section recall as much of it as I can and then check it very simple process to do during your studying just do it after every section what I also used to do while I was doing this reading
this studying was I made questions or flash cards from the material so that I could use those and test myself on them when I revise the topic later on and that's it once you have those questions once you have those flash cards that is your main form of testing that you will keep on doing in your revision sessions I really would not waste any time in class or out ofit to do the note taking from the textbooks at se because what's the point your exam is a few days away notes have very low utility you
all you can do is read them so really ask yourself if you're W to the idea of making notes what is the point focus on making and then doing questions and that's literally it for the testing it's so simple this is literally just the way that I did the testing I found it easiest to be done this way and I did it regularly word for word this is what I did to get in those top 1% grades and the thing is I still do these things to this day as a fourth year medical student because
it works you just have to have a little faith at the start the one thing that does slow your revision down a fair bit is this question making or flash card making process because if you're not slick with it if you're not quick with it it does really hamper on like the the learning that you can do because you're busy making the flash cards especially if your exam is close by that's what I used to be thinking oh there's only like a week to the exams what's the point of me sitting down on making questions
and then having to test myself on them let me just read through the notes and obviously it makes sense at the time but it's the lazy way out it's not right to solve that issue though what I would highly recommend is using these note taking applications one that's in particular that I'm very impressed with is remote it hands down one of the most useful applications for students that is out there and you guys know I wouldn't say this lightly I'm not a big app user the reason I think it's so useful is because it lets
you create the flash cards while you're making the notes or while you're going through information and studying there's no time wasted the process of making them is quick and then you can practice these flash cards on the same app with the space repetition algorithm Etc literally it is the first app that I've seen that combines the note taking as well as the active recall or the testing so for those of you who are having trouble not making notes and still would like to make notes this might be a smoother transition to testing yourself more and
it's actually very easy to do the way you do it is you type out a question on here and then you have a double equals to sign type out the answer and boom flash card done put into your deck and there's many flash card types that you can make on here too bullet pointed long answer image occlusion ones for the testing yourself bit specifically one of the features that sped up the process is to upload the lecture slide for a topic or a YouTube video and then what you can do is during the studying instead
of even having to write out the flash cards fully you can legit select the information on there and create flash cards straight from it choose the style or phrase of the flash cards you want and one click and boom flash card done if you're feeling lazy it can also bulk create the flash cards from the entire PDF or PowerPoint as well regardless saves a lot of time if you are interested by the way use the link in the description I get a little bit of a kickback from it but again the free version also lets
you make unlimited flash cards at notes as well it's great now the second big thing that I changed in my studying process was what I was doing during the first 10 minutes of my learning instead of opening up my book and revising by reading through every L laboring over every page for hours trying to memorize this understand it perfectly I saw it wasn't working nothing was sticking it's because our brains are like children they need to be taught the ABCs first then the words then they can connect the words and start making sentences not the
Perfect Analogy but all the same ABCs first and you can't get the ABCs of the entire chapter first if you're reading from the first line and going down and that means right at the start right in those first 10 minutes you have two simple jobs number one identify and understand the structure of the chapter in 5 minutes time yourself I used to literally time myself Zan you only have 5 minutes to go through this whole thing understand what the headings mean look at what the concepts are about how is this chapter laid out and then
number two I used to watch like a short basic YouTube video on this chapter just make sure the video includes visuals if it's conceptual or it's problems or examples Etc if it's math chemistry physics these two things what I've just described is called priming you're giving your brain the big picture first and learning the basics of how everything is working before diving in deeper and because you have this layout because you have the map of the treasure hunt before even starting that will then speed up the way you track the way you move everything the
way you study that topic will be much faster as you also probably saw I uploaded the YouTube video on uh remote because it actually stops and generates questions for you while you watch the test yourself if you're doing this sort of stuff if you use questions while you watch the videos like this it's just incredibly useful small actions that then add up and keep reinforcing the test in your method right by the way if you want to get better at the skill of studying through actionable steps where where I give you free pdf resources and
I give you advice that I've collected on how I do it over the last 6 years then sign up to my completely free email newsletter study scoop is linked in the description below just sign up and I'll personally deliver a fresh crisp email directly to your inbox in just a few moments okay you're testing throughout you do the first 10 minutes of priming now what how do you after those 10 first 10 minutes actually go through the whole thing and read and remember and understand all the information of the chapter now and that's the final
piece of the puzzle that I solved a few years ago if I'd read something that was a bit ahead of my level of understanding I'd get confused I'd waste energy I'd waste time I'd just try and push it in and that is not going to help with my understanding in the first place so what did I do instead the smart thing that I realized I should I should be doing is if I come across something confusing it's to completely ignore it my sole aim was to only take in the information I can easily understand simply
because that wastes less time and that then became the solution to swiftly understand the material as you're going through that instead for the rest of the studying you will be taking the information in three passes the first pass of the whole electri slide you did in the first 10 minutes where you understood and absorb the basics the structure of the chapter now in the second pass you act as if your brain cannot be exposed to anything that's confusing that is literally my thought process if I don't get something on the first glance I skip it
this means you have to become hyper Vigilant about what you're taking in and when you're taking it in this is an important point though I would not recommend you go through all 90 slides of a lecture or whatever for the second pass and then again the 90 sides for the third F that's a waste of time you've already done it for the first one you know how the PowerPoint is structured and you know where certain information already is so in the second pass go to the topics your mind is curious about go to the topics
you got wrong in the initial 10 to 20 mcqs even on the same slide you will see different layers of information you can understand something you can understand something you won't so in your second run through only focus on those general concepts how to solve your problems vaguely how do things work for example for this Reno Auto regulation slide I'm a bit curious about it I've not done it before properly I can see that the smooth muscle cells contract the archeries in that that are going into the kidney in response to increase in blood pressure
I understand that that's okay that's just one of the mechanisms for how they would uh regulate the kidneys okay and now this is something I don't understand I don't I don't know what the maenza is and what role Nitric side would have in this as well so I would move on move on completely I would not sit there and confuse myself I'm looking at this diagram maybe the diagram explains are better I don't think it does it does not help I need a bit more background cuz I've just jumped into this lecture I need a
bit more background into how it works so I'm going to move forward I'm going to skip it completely and come back to it at the end after I've done more of the reading after I've actually done more of the understanding of how the kidneys are functioning how they're being regulated Etc again this point the point is it's kind of weird making this all out loud because this is all happening in your head the point is to not get stuck anywhere fluidly move through it don't get stuck reading things that you don't know even looking things
up like look things up if they're quick if you don't understand them from that one search move forward because otherwise you are resorting to you sitting there and putting extra energy into understanding this thing that might not even be that important so only once you get the basics then you do the general idea behind this whole Auto regulation thing and then you dive into the specifics of the mechanism also during this process remember making good questions from the slides itself during the second during the third pass so you can then use them to test yourself
which again you can do on this view of remote as well as you can see the reason I I'm recommending remote to make flashcards as well in this view is because one of its most unique features is the fact that you can actually go back to the context of where you made the flash card within the lecture so that when you're testing yourself if you get something wrong instead of just flipping the flash card and reading a two line answer you can click and go back to the full context and learn what you got wrong
in a better more complete way in context if you look back to my very first video this has been my biggest issue with flash cards the fact that you can only see a two or three line answer that's limited but today three and a bit years later remode has solved that it lets you go back to the context where you made the flash card again I know you guys this is sponsored but this is one of the few products that I'm truly very passionate about I've started using it over the last few weeks and it's
been sick I get a lot of questions about what that best app is to use and I always think which apps are actually taking in effective learning strategies and incorporating them into their systems and this is one that does that I wish someone told me about it a few years ago it would have been really cool but if you're interested anyways check rnot out using the link in the description to download it it has a free version where you can make unlimited flashcards and notes and then paid for a few more of the features that
I've shown and again full disclosure if you use the link in the description I get a little bit of a kickback from it helps support the channel and I'd appreciate it so I can keep making good valuable videos for you guys hopefully in the future anyways these were the three biggest changes I made to my study process right at the start before I find out found out about higher order learning or mind mapping Etc and from my experience in the people that I'm teaching that I'm coaching these days if you do just simply if you
incorporate testing and if you do the first 10 minutes that priming effectively you will see a huge jump in your marks and then you will also see a huge jump in the speed at which you're understanding and learning the information I honestly see it month after month and it blows my mind the fact that I still have to keep making these videos because there's not enough people that are doing it the right way and yes it is hard incorporating these changes is hard but it also is what makes the biggest difference if you want a
2 to 3 Monon plan for how to improve the skill of studying improve the learning efficiency in your method check this video out I've literally given week by week week one week 2 week three every week There's actionable steps that you can do it's just a plan that you can follow on your own and improve the way you do the studying I'll also link another video here that only you would find especially useful okay now bye-bye go do some smart work
