both DC and Marvel have created a lot of new characters recently some of these Concepts have been really bad but some of them have been really good and have broken out like Miss Marvel and Blue Beetle what about the ones that didn't break out today we're going to take a look at those who are good Concepts but for whatever reason they just weren't done right and that's what we mean by wasted it's DC specific today so leave a comment Down Below on your thoughts on these characters or other DC characters that are wasted and if
you guys like this I'll probably do one for Marvel so leave some of their failed characters as well without further Ado let's get into this list Brazil loves DC there's the reason they make ccxp the biggest pop culture convention in Brazil a massive priority every year they will go there instead of San Diego Comic-Con because of how passionate the fan base is and so DC finally pieced some things together and created a new Brazilian DC character now there have been some in the past notably fire but fire was never meant to really be a lead
hero this new character was attached to Wonder Woman Yara FL the new Wonder Girl while the bat family and super family are both pretty overcrowded these days the Wonder family has plenty of space for new characters it's really just wonder woman Donna Troy's Wonder Girl Cassie sandmark as Wonder Girl and recently Nubia has been given a Resurgence but that Supporting Cast has been notably weaker when compared to her counterparts in the Trinity how many Robins can you name and what about Louis Elaine and Jimmy Olsen for the most part I think the average person would
only be able to come up with Steve Trevor at best as an answer for Wonder Woman DC was using future State as a launch point for the character future state was originally a part of a larger initiative at DC called 5G which would have had the entire line shift to operating in real time and heroes would be replaced with Legacy characters like Yara Flora as Wonder Woman or John Kent as Superman it would have also futured John Kent and Damien Wayne in a Professor X and Magneto type rivalry if you're interested in a video on
this let me know but yeah she was not going to be just a new Wonder Girl but the heir to the Wonder Woman title so this is as good as it gets combining one of the most passionate fan bases with of a popular character who had plenty of room for a new supporting cast member and this idea was hype the CW commissioned a script for a potential liveaction show before the character even made her debut in the comics the design was distinct how can you possibly mess this up well the writer and artist for wondergirl
was Joelle Jones who's probably not the best pick if you want to boost a character based on Brazilian reputation because she wasn't Brazilian and that would show she made the decision to have Yara not be from Brazil she was from Idaho and she's written not as a Brazilian but as your standard American white girl speaks grammatically incorrect Portuguese and mostly hangs out with the Greek pantheon yeah this is how you fumble the bag you might be able to still recover from this except Jones found herself in a bunch of tracing controversies and the book got
super delayed so delayed that it got canceled after just seven issues canceled with an eighth issue already announced with its contents being used for an event Tian nobody cared about for context at DC a miniseries is often six issues and this was announced as an ongoing which at DC has meant at least 25 issues for a while even for smaller characters these ongoings have been lasting like Powergirl is quickly approaching issue 20 and we're also seeing a book like poison ivy about to reach 30 issues and really when a brand new character gets an ongoing
DC is hoping that they can end up going for 50 and I bet they hoped a character like Yara would end up as one of their staple characters who could go for hundreds of issues but yeah it didn't work out and I don't think we've seen such a high potential character so poorly handled like this should have been their Miles Morales their biggest new hero since I don't know Tim Drake KY Rainer but those two are hardly relevant now so maybe we go back even further to when Wally West became the Flash doesn't sound like
too much too overhyped am I am I am I overthinking this I don't think so cuz that's really what it should have been Wonder Woman 1984 had not come out yet so the character's reputation was still pretty highly regarded by the public the Wonder family is irrelevant this is Batman getting his Robin if the only previous Robins were Jason Todd and Stephanie Brown indeed C is never getting this chance again you can make the character interesting give her good villains and a good Supporting Cast but it's going to be very hard and probably impossible to
ever generate this level of interest and hype again and it's a real shame because Brazil does deserve to have a high-profile superhero to root for they've been a very under tapped group of passionate fans and DC just gave up on the character because really that's what they did even after Joel Jones messed up they didn't bring in anyone else to try and Salvage it there's so many Brazilian artists in the comics industry some of the biggest in fact come from Brazil but they didn't consider bringing any of them into the creative process and ended up
with that she's now making some appearances in Tom King's Wonder Woman which is another one of DC's attempts to try to boost the character's profile by combining their best writer on the character but Yara is strictly appearing as a supporting character which yeah makes sense but her role is not in any capacity that's going to be ground groundbreaking in any way and that book also introduces Wonder Woman's own daughter Trinity as the next Wonder Girl and future Wonder Woman so Yara lost her spot and that's the story of the biggest fumble in DC's history and
while this is the biggest they've wasted so many other characters as well sideways sideways is one of those characters who people mention as being DC's answer to Spider-Man and besides the comparisons that can be made with their costumes there could be a legitimate argument sideways is Derek James and was part of the greater new age of DC heroes initiative a lot of these characters were a response to Marvel notably the Fantastic 4 and Hulk did not have titles and so DC created the terrifics and damage these books were led by High Caliber artists such as
Ivan Rees on terrifics Jim Lee on the immortal man and John romita Jr on silencer but sideways was a little different in that it notably feature DC's then co-publisher Dan Dido as its writer his first comic in 6 years and one of just a handful in his whole career it did have Kenneth Roa for on Art but he can be in a acquired taste he's also the man responsible for lips on Red Hood and this questionable and rightly controversial Teen Titans cover but the character sideways was cool at least in concept his powers allowed him
to teleport to people or places as long as he knew knew where they were for a superhero to really hit that next level and popularity a cool costume name and powers are the most important thing and sideways had all of that he even had a pretty solid debut villain named killed who was a speed stir making her the perfect Foe for the teleporting sideways his Supporting Cast as a whole was pretty solid Derek is Puerto Rican but adopted with his stepmother and father playing key roles in his growth as a person and hero alongside them
he had his best friend Ernie who helped him keep his identity a secret and served as basically his social media manager and that was one of his goals to use his powers to become internet famous and rake in a ton of money using media and photography to boost a character's good standing within a community sound familiar later joining his cast would be a detective who grew interested in Derek in his life basically an attempt at a gym Gordon as character and he also had a Lex like villain in Leo Dominus who wanted to steal his
powers to explore the dark Multiverse or something and that was probably part of the problem this book took place in Gotham City and yet Batman never makes an appearance which wouldn't really be a problem except as a whole it doesn't really let Derek carve out his own territory he's still rubbing shoulders in the home turf of DC's most popular hero yet doesn't have any relationship to him there's also this big golden guy who's one of the worst parts of the book He's supposed to be like a mentor or mysterious figure Derek interacts with but he
just makes the whole book book feel too Fantastical yes this is a superhero book but it makes the stakes feel less real just in how he's written the line as a whole would end up being another of DC's failures at trying to introduce a massive amount of new characters at the same time and sideways would unfortunately go down with it his most notable recent appearance was in dark crisis which was also a letdown he showed up for a little bit to just teleport some people and then went back to a relevancy which is a shame
because it did seem like they were trying to set him up for something big for a moment all he really needed was to get added to a young justice or Teen Titans and he would fit perfectly he was in Young Justice for like an issue or two but that young justice run has long been forgotten I mean his powers would be so much more useful when there's another hero for him to teleport he should be around characters his own age and just be a young hero he's a perfect cross between a brooding and light-hearted character
that works well in superhero teams he can basically fit that cyborg role or well the Spider-Man hole being the Young hero with multiple life problems while also having really interesting powers and just doing superhero stuff but it doesn't seem like there are many plans for sideways in the future and so he is bound to be forgotten signal Gotham's daytime hero that was a pitch for Duke Thomas and that sounds pretty good it's a niche and Gotham that makes sense to fill first introduced in zeroy year Duke had a connection to Batman early on he was
the one who rescued Batman when the Riddler sent a hurricane to Gotham and flooded the city isolating it from the world in this state The Riddler challenged the entire city to come up with an unsolvable riddle in exchange for the return of the City's power Duke would spend his free time which he had a lot of at the moment attempting to come up with one of course Batman would come and save the day and the arc following this would be endgame the climactic conclusion to Scott Snider's take on the Batman and Joker rivalry at the
time that is Snider would keep riding Batman and Joker again and again Duke was actually supposed to be the new Robin for the 2010s and The New 52 as a whole now the character of Robin was kind of weird during this point because the new 52 was weird the idea was that most hero histories got reset with important events being condensed to 5 years but Batman was too popular and so alongside Green Lantern basically every single important Batman story was shoved into five years that meant he had his origin his back get snapped Jason to
die etc etc all happened in 5 years this also meant that he went through four Robins in that 5 years kind of while Dick Grayson was Robin Jason Todd was Robin and died and Damen Wayne and his son would be Robin Tim Drake was not Robin he went straight to being Red Robin and it also meant the removal of the two more popular Batgirls in favor of of Barbara Gordon see how this reboot stuff is messy but Duke would have been the fourth Robin in that continuity and as I said those bat girls were removed
so the bat family was not super crowded at that moment although it's been thought that Harper row would have also been Robin so who knows Damen Wayne also dies in a new 52 but Duke's path to becoming Robin would have been paved later on with the supposed death of Batman yeah he's never dead but in this time Jim Gordon took over the Batman title in a met and so Duke Duke lost his parents because of Joker's endgame where he gassed several parts of the city and so Duke found himself tied to the Foster system where
he was constantly balancing around and getting in trouble this would all lead to we are Robin when a bunch of Street kids use the robin name as a call to resistance to vigilantism in order to protect themselves due to the loss of their parents and the ramp up in crime due to Batman's disappearance Duke Rose to become their leader and they ended up getting trained by the real Robins for a bit before the court of owls plotted to shut them down in order to recruit their favorite prodige and Dick Grayson to do this Damen Wayne
was forced into the court and him and Duke fought before Damian ends up being snapped out of it or something along those lines and Duke would end up vowing to not become a robin before going to watch a movie with Damian and so while Duke was definitely being set up to be the robin it seems editorial stepped in and said no and after this let's see we have to deal with Mr Bloom crazy superpowered drug dealer love crafty and freak who Jim Gordon had to deal with Duke was volunteering with Bruce Wayne at a clinic
and he discovered that he used to be Batman because of how good he was at quickly solving and fixing things and when Duke revealed to Bruce that he knew this this would start Bruce back on his journey to be reborn as Batman but for Duke it would be his discovery of tragedy he would find his parents but they were lost to the joke or toxin yet in the battle against Bloom he helped Batman save the day and together they began the plan of becoming a new sidekick but it would not be Robin they did not
even have a name for him for a while they first stayed with the bird Theme by calling him Lark before he ended up being the signal this is where they really lost I think first off naming the character after an object boring there's no character called the ring or anything for a reason it's also probably just not a good look to have like the most prominent character of color being the named after the object but also the costume the costume does not work look how armored and techy it is when everyone else in the bat
family is wearing something a bit more traditional as far as superhero costumes go but they did do well on its colors kind of it's different and stands out from the other bat family members which is good and while yes it makes sense for him being the daylight hero most Batman stories take place at night and so he would effectively not appear in many but I mean he was still cool until dark Knight's metal which is where it really fell down they gave Duke superpowers I guess this was their way to make him stand out from
the others once again but it makes him stand out in a bad way what's worse is you'd be pretty hard pressed to find anyone who knows what his powers are because it's not clear it's like something do of light and he can act like a big Flash light but also make people invisible it's all very confusing and not definitive they really tried to do too much to make him different in that sense when maybe being more similar would have helped him grow as a character more and while yes there are too many Robins either way
he was going to end up becoming a part of the bat family so they really should just made him a robin since that would have been the best chance for him to gain popularity in these days he's spending his time with The Outsiders Batman's covert Ops Team instead of Batman being his mentor it is primarily been Black Lightning which is cool cuzz Black Lightning is cool I guess they have similarities but there's no world where someone cares more about Black Lightning sidekick more than Batman's but these are what I see as DC's biggest fumbles their
most wasted characters in recent years maybe even all time now in theory no character is irredeemable but in their current comic Market it is very hard to do both a right writer and artist there's always a chance that one of these these guys can find Redemption
