What is Lean Manufacturing? Hey guys, my name is Igor Felipe and today we are going to talk about what Lean Manufacturing is. But before you start the video, leave your like, subscribe to the channel to help us take our content to more people.
It is simple, practical and easy. And only you can help us, so let's get to the topic. Lean Manufacturing is a methodology that focuses on minimizing waste in the manufacturing system and simultaneously maximizing productivity.
Also known as Lean Production or translated lean production into Portuguese, or simply Lean the approach is based on the toyota production system, which is still used by the company, in addition to countless others including Caterpillar and Nike Lean Manufacturing is based on several specific principles like kaizen, or continuous improvement. The methodology was introduced in the western world through the 1990 publication "The machine that changed the world", based on a 5-year, 5 million-cost MIT study on the future of the automobile. The study detailed toyota's lean production system.
Since that time, Lean principles have profoundly influenced manufacturing concepts around the world, as well as non -manufacturing industries such as healthcare, software development and services. The benefits of Lean include reduced delivery times, reduced operating costs and better product quality to name just a few. And now I would like to leave the five principles of Lean Manufacturing A widely referenced book "Lean mindset in companies, eliminate waste and create wealth" from 1996, exposed five Lean principles that many in the field refer to as the basic principles.
They are: The value Value flow Flow Production pulled and Perfection Let's start with the first principle: Value This principle identifies the value from the customer's perspective, that is, the value is created by the producer but is defined by the customer In other words, companies need understand the value that the customer attributes to its products and services, which in turn can help them determine how much money the customer is willing to pay. The company must strive to eliminate the waste and cost of its business processes to that the ideal price of the customer can be achieved with a greater profit for the company Value flow This principle involves registering and analyzing the flow of information, or materials necessary to produce a specific product or service, with the intention of identifying waste and improvement methods O Value flow covers the entire product life cycle, from raw material to disposal. Companies must examine each stage of the cycle for waste or "Mute" in Japanese.
Everything that does not add value must be eliminated. Lean thinking recommends aligning the supply chain as part of that effort Flow is critical for waste elimination Flow Eliminate functional barriers and identify ways to improve delivery times to ensure processes are smooth, from the moment an order is placed is received until delivery Lean production depends on preventing interruptions in the production process and enabling a harmonized and integrated set of processes in which activities move and a constant flow. Pull production Establish a pull production system.
This means that you only start a new job when there is demand . Lean Manufacturing uses the pulled production system, instead of a pushed production system , where production in a company starts before the demand for the product. With the pushed production system, inventory requirements are determined in advance and the product is manufactured to meet this forecast.
However, forecasts are generally inaccurate, which can result in fluctuations between excess inventory and insufficiency, as well as subsequent interrupted schedules and poor customer service. Unlike lean production, Lean Manufacturing is based on an extraction system , in which nothing it is bought or manufactured until there is demand. Pull production depends on flexibility and communication Perfection Pursue perfection with the continuous improvement of the process, or as we call kaizen.
Lean Manufacturing is based on the concept of continually striving for perfection, which implies addressing the root causes of quality problems , digging up and eliminating waste in the value stream. By following these five principles of Lean Manufacturing you will be able to maximize production, avoid waste and consequently increase your profit.
