Absalom also had other peculiar characteristics such as empathy and charm Absalom story became known in a very negative way two main facts marked his life the murder of his half-brother amnam for revenge in the conspiratorial act in Rebellion against his own father Monarch David It is believed that these facts in absalom's life are related to the Lord's punishment to David because of his adultery with Bathsheba and uriah's murder through the prophet Nathan God announced three punishments to Monarch David his son with Bathsheba would die the sword would never depart from his family and someone from his own house would bring disgrace upon the king and possess his women in sight of all Israel the last two punishments had Direct participation from Absalom according to the book of second Samuel chapter 12. Absalom developed hatred and a burning desire for Revenge he harbored deep resentment towards his father David because of a traumatic event involving his sister Tamar Tamar was raped by amnon absalom's half-brother and David was outraged but took no action against amnon that could alleviate absalom's Wrath after two years Absalom had devised a plan to kill amnon he invited all of David's Sons to a banquet and during the event gave orders for his servants to assassinate amnon the Bible says that Absalom persuaded the king to let his son amnon go to the party and at the opportune moment when amnon was drunk Absalom ordered his servants to kill amnon after committing this terrible act Absalom fled to the city of Kishore his grandfather taumai City where he remained for three years during this time he nurtured bitterness and devised a conspiratorial plan against his own father David David however was very homesick for his son Absalom and ordered his officer joab to bring his son to the city of Jerusalem however the king ordered Absalom not to live in the palace I don't want to see him he said so Absalom went to live in his own house and no longer appeared before the king Absalom lived in Jerusalem for two years without seeing the king after that he sent for joab to intercede for him with King David but joab did not want to go Absalom sent for him again but joab refused again then Absalom sent his servants to burn joab's field after that joab went to talk to the king in Absalom was called and knelt before King David as described in second Samuel chapter 14.
after speaking with the King Absalom put his perverse plan into practice he began to gain popularity among the people undermining his father's Authority as king he positioned himself as an alternative to David's government attracting followers and winning the hearts of the people with his attractive appearance and rhetorical skills according to the Bible Absalom had a chariot prepared with horses and 50 men to run ahead of him he would get up early and stand at The City Gate where the road ended when a person arrived there with a case for King David to resolve Absalom would call them over and ask where they were from when the person answered Absalom would say that the law was on their side but there was no representative of the king to hear their case Absalom also said that he wished he were a judge so that everyone would present their legal issues to him and he would do them Justice when someone went to prostrate themselves before him Absalom would not allow it on the contrary he took them by the hand and kissed them he did this with all the Israelites who came to ask King David for justice and so he won over the hearts of the people of Israel for years later Absalom told King David that he wanted to go to the city of Hebron to pay a promise he made to God the king allowed him to fulfill his vow but in truth Absalom was plotting a plan to take his father's throne he went to Hebron and sent Messengers to all the tribes of Israel saying that Absalom had become king in Hebron 200 men left Jerusalem with Absalom as guests but they knew nothing of that plan while offering sacrifices Absalom also sent for a hitherfell from the city of jilo ahithophel was one of David's counselors thus the revolt against the king grew stronger in absalom's followers increased then a messenger came and told David that the Israelites had gone over to absalom's side then David told all his officers who were with him in Jerusalem that they should flee quickly from Absalom the king's servants replied that they were ready to do whatever he said so the king left accompanied by all his family and officials leaving only ten concubines behind to take care of the palace when the king and all his people were leaving the city they stopped at the last house all the officials stood before the king while the cherithites and palathides paraded in front of him the 600 soldiers who had followed him from the city of gath also passed before him then David said to a tie their leader that he should go back and stay with the new king Absalom for he was a foreigner and a refugee who was far from his homeland itai replied that he would always go with the King wherever he went even if he died because of it as David's followers left the people cried out loud the king crossed the Kidron stream and all his men too and went towards the desert zadok the priest was with them as were the Levites carrying the sacred Ark of the Covenant the Levites placed the Ark on the ground until all the people had finished leaving the city abyathar was also there then the king told zodok to take the Ark of the Covenant back to the city if God was pleased with him one day he would let the king return to see the ark and the house where it is but if God was not pleased let him do with him what he wanted and David continued to speak to zadac to take his son ahmaz and also Jonathan son of abiathar and return in peace to the city meanwhile David would be waiting in the desert paths until he received news from them so Zada can I buyathar took the ark back to Jerusalem and stayed there David climbed up Mount Olivet crying he was barefoot and had covered his head in a sign of sadness all those who followed him covered their heads and also cried when they told David that a hitherfell had gone over to absalom's side he asked God to make a hitherfell's advice hinder absalom's plans when David arrived at the top of the mountain where there was a place of worship His faithful friend hush I met him there hush I was wearing torn clothes and had put dirt on his head in a sign of sadness David told him not to come with him because it would not help but hush I could help by making a hifophel's advice ineffective when he returned to the city he should tell Absalom that he would now serve the new king as he served his father the priests sadak and abyathar would be there and hush I would tell them everything he heard in the king's Palace their sons ahamas and Jonathan would also be there in hush I could send all information he could get through them so hush I went to the city just as Absalom was arriving there as mentioned in second Samuel chapter 15. Absalom and all Israelites entered Jerusalem accompanied by ahithophel when hushai David's faithful friend met Absalom he shouted long live the king long live the king Absalom asked hushai where his loyalty was to his friend and why he had not gone with him hush I replied that he was in favor of whoever was chosen by God and by people and that he would stay with Absalom he said that he would serve his boss's son just as he served his father Absalom asked the hitherfell for advice on what they should do ahithophel suggested that Absalom have relations with his father's concubines Those whom he left taking care of the palace in this way everyone in Israel would know that Absalom had become an enemy of his father and his followers would be encouraged then they set up a tent for Absalom on the palace Terrace and there in front of everyone he had relations with his father's concubines at that time the advice of ahithophel was followed as if it were the very word of God both David and Absalom followed it as described in second Samuel chapter 16 between verses 15 to 23. ahithophel suggested to Absalom that he choose 12 000 men to pursue David that night he planned to attack David while he was tired and discouraged causing all his men to flee in killing only the king Absalom and all the Israelite leaders thought this advice was good however Absalom decided to also hear hushi's advice when hushai arrived Absalom asked if they should follow a hitherfel's advice or if hushai had another suggestion hush I replied that this time ahithophel's advice was not good he explained that David and his men were Valiant Fighters and were Furious like a bear in the forest whose Cubs had been stolen in addition David was an experienced Soldier and did not stay with his soldiers overnight hush I suggested that Absalom gather all the Israelites from one end of the country to the other and lead them into battle they would find David before he even knew what was happening and none of his men would Escape if David fled into some City built on a hill all the people would bring ropes and raise the city Absalom and all the Israelites thought hushi's advice was better than ahithophels God had resolved that ahithophel's good advice would not be followed so that punishment would fall upon Absalom then hush I told the priests sadak and ibayathar the advice he had given to Absalom and the Israelite leaders as well as the advice ahithophel had given he asked them to quickly send a message to David telling him not to spend the night in the desert paths and to cross the Jordan River immediately to avoid being destroyed Jonathan and ahamas were waiting near the rogel spring because they did not want to risk being seen entering the city a servant girl went there from time to time and informed them about what was happening then they went to tell King David a boy saw Jonathan and ahamaz and told Absalom they then quickly went to a man's house in the city of bahuram where there was a well near the house and went into it the man's wife covered the mouth of the well with a cover and spread crushed Grain on top so no one would notice anything absalom's officers arrived and asked the woman where ahamas and Jonathan were she replied that they had crossed the river the men searched but could not find them and returned to Jerusalem after they left ahamaz and Jonathan came out of the well and went to warn King David about ahithophel's plan against him asking him to cross the river quickly David and his men began crossing the Jordan River and by Dawn everyone had crossed over when a hitherfell saw that his advice had not been followed he returned to his City put his Affairs in order and hanged himself he was buried in his father's tomb when Absalom and his soldiers crossed the Jordan River David had already arrived at Mahine Absalom had put Amisa in command of his army instead of joab amasa was son of isra an ishmaelite his mother was Abigail daughter of Nash sister of saruya mother of joab Absalom and Israel camped in Gilead when David arrived at mahanim he met shobi son of naash from rabba in Ammon Mercure son of Amil from lotabar and brazilai from roach limb in Gilead they brought basins clay vessels beds as well as food for David and his men they also brought wheat barley flour beans roasted grains peas honey cheese curdled milk and some sheep they knew that David and his men would be hungry thirsty and tired in the desert according to 2nd Samuel chapter 17.
King David gathered all his soldiers divided them into groups of a thousand and a hundred and placed officers to command them he sent them out in three groups one commanded by joab another by abishi joab's brother and another byatai from the city of gath the king told his men that he would also go with them but they replied that he should not go because he was worth more than ten thousand of them it would be better for him to stay in the city and send help the king agreed and stood by the gate while his soldiers marched out in groups of a thousand and a hundred he ordered joab a bishai and a tie to treat young Absalom gently David's Army fought against the Israelites in the forest of Ephraim and defeated them it was a terrible defeat twenty thousand men were killed that day suddenly Absalom found himself facing some of David's soldiers he was riding on a mule and as he passed under a large oak tree his head got caught in the branches the mule continued to run an Absalom was left hanging one of David's men saw Absalom and told joab joab asked why he had not killed him right there but the man replied that he would not lift a finger against the King's son joab then took three Spears and thrust them into absalom's chest while he was still alive hanging from the oak tree ten of joab soldiers surrounded Absalom and finished killing him then joab blew the trumpet to stop the fighting his troops stopped pursuing the Israelites and returned they took absalom's body and threw it into a deep pit in the forest covering it with a huge pile of stones then all the Israelites fled to their homes while still alive Absalom had built a monument for himself in the valley of Kings because he had no son to keep his name alive he gave his own name to the monument which is still known today as absalom's Monument son of zadak asked joab to run and give the king the news that God had done Justice by delivering him from his enemies joab replied that he should not bring any good news that day because the King's son had died he then told his Ethiopian slave to go and tell the king what he had seen ahamaz insisted on bringing the news as well but joab asked why he wanted to do that since he would receive no reward ahumas repeated that he wanted to go no matter what happened joab then allowed him to go in ahamaz ran down the Jordan Valley Road passing ahead of the Ethiopian slave David was sitting between the gate that led out of the city and the one that led in The Watchmen went up to the top of the wall and stood on the gate Terrace he looked out and saw a man running alone The Watchman warned the king who said that if he was alone he brought good news the runner approached and the Watchman saw another man running alone David said that this one also brought good news The Watchman said that by his way of running the first man must be ahamaz son of sadak David said that he was a good boy and must be bringing good news ahumas shouted to the king that everything was going well and knelt before him touching his face to the ground and saying that God should be praised for giving him victory over those who rebelled against him the king asked if young Absalom was well and hahamas replied that at the moment joab sent him he saw a great commotion but did not know what it was the king told him to stand aside and wait then the Ethiopian messenger arrived and told the king that he had good news for him God had given him victory over all those who had rebelled against him the king asked again if young Absalom was well and the messenger replied that he wished that what happened to him would happen to all the king's enemies and all those who rebelled against him then the King was deeply saddened and went up to the room above the gate beginning to cry as he walked back and forth shouting o my son my son Absalom Absalom my son I would rather have died in your place my son account described in second Samuel chapter 18.
