what Jesus did in Hell after his death we know that hell was created for Satan and his demons but did you know that Jesus had to go to hell why would Jesus go to hell or Hades the Abode of the Lost and the demonic to begin our journey we need to understand what hell is according to the Bible the concept of hell can be confusing but the Bible gives us some clear insights before we continue please subscribe to this Channel and like this video God bless you hell is often depicted as a place of Darkness
separation from God and judgment it's not a place anyone would want to go however it's important to note that the Bible us uses different terms to describe this place and each term has its nuances here are some Bible references to get you grounded on the topic number one shol in the Old Testament shol is the Hebrew word used to describe the realm of the dead it is a place where all the dead go both the righteous and the unrighteous it is a shadowy existence a place of waiting number two two Hades in the New Testament
Hades is the Greek equivalent of shol it is depicted similarly as a temporary place where Souls await the final judgment Jesus mentioned Hades in his parable of the rich man and Lazarus Luke 16: 19-31 illustrating it as a place of Torment for the unrighteous number three gehenna this term is used by Jesus to describe the the final place of punishment for the wicked gehenna was originally a valley outside Jerusalem where trash and refuges were burned Jesus used this imagery to convey the Eternal nature of Hell's fire Mark 9:43 number four the Lake of Fire in
the Book of Revelation the Lake of Fire is described as the final destination for Satan his angels and all who are not found in the book of life it is a place of eternal torment Revelation 20: 1014 to 15 in some these terms give us a picture of hell as both a temporary place of the Dead that is shol and Hades and a final place of Eternal punishment gehenna and Lake of Fire in spite of these clear articulation in the Bible of the nature of Hell there are still common misconceptions about hell before we continue
we address address them to have a clear understanding the first misconception is that of hell as the devil's Kingdom many see hell as the devil's Kingdom where he rules over demons and torments souls in reality hell is a place of punishment for Satan and his followers Satan's power is taken away by God he is just as much a prisoner in hell as his human collaborators there is no special treatment for Satan in Hell the Bible describes hell as a place prepared for the devil and his angels speaking of God it says then he will say
to those on his left depart from me you who are cursed into the Eternal fire prepared for the devil and his angels Matthew 25:41 the second misconception is that of hell as a party place some people joke about hell being a place where they will have fun with their friends this couldn't be further from the truth think about people wearing t-shirts hats and other paraphernalia idolizing Hellfire it is incredible they imagine that being in hell is fun and perhaps make them special they could not be more wrong the Bible describes hell as a place of
weeping and nashing of teeth a place of utter darkness and separation from God's goodness it says while the sons of the Kingdom will be thrown into the outer darkness in that place there will be weeping and nashing of teeth Matthew 8: 12 Jesus confirms here that there are only two choices you are either with God and enjoy the Tranquility of his peace or you are with Satan in hell to suffer the agony of his sin the third misconception is the idea of purgatory there are those who belief in the idea of purgatory a place where
souls are purified before entering Heaven this concept is not found in the Bible the Bible teaches that after death there is judgment and our Eternal destination is determined by our faith in Jesus Hebrews 9: 27 do not hold out hope for this lie your salvation can only be perfected and insured while you are still alive but the good news is that it is free and paid for already by the blood of Jesus all you have to do is accept and enter his kingdom of peace and righteous luxury that sound certainly like the best deal ever
another misconception is the immediacy of hell some believe that everyone who dies goes immediately to Hell however the Bible indicates a final Judgment Day when all will be judged Revelation 20: 11-15 until that time the dead are in a state of waiting either in Comfort or in torment as seen in the parable of the rich man and Lazarus lastly there is the notion of annihilationism this is the belief that souls are completely destroyed rather than suffering eternally while some Christian denominations hold this view the traditional biblical interpretation supports the idea of Eternal punishment for the
unrighteous by understanding these definitions and clearing up these misconceptions we can better appreciate the significance of what Jesus did when he descended to Hell his journey there was not to suffer further but to Proclaim Victory preach to the spirits and set captives free showcasing his authority over death and Hell Jesus death and descent to hell to understand what Jesus did in hell we first need to remember what happened when he died Jesus the son of God was crucified on a cross he was betrayed by one of his disciples arrested and unjustly tried despite being innocent
Jesus was sentenced to death he suffered greatly enduring mockery physical pain and ultimately crucifixion a brutal form of execution after he died his body was taken down from the cross and placed in a tomb this was a dark time for his followers who were filled with grief and confusion they didn't yet fully understand that Jesus's death was part of God's divine plan for Humanity's salvation Jesus actions in hell at this point we get to what Jesus did in hell and why he was there number one preaching to the spirits after his death Jesus descended to
hell where he preached to the spirits in prison according to 1 Peter 3: 18 to20 these Spirits were those who had been disobedient in the days of Noah this is how Apostle Peter describes it for Christ also suffered once for sins the righteous for the unrighteous to bring you to God he was put to death in the body but made alive in the spirit after being made alive he went and made proclamation to the imprisoned spirits to those those who were disobedient long ago when God waited patiently in the days of Noah while the ark
was being built first Peter 3: 18 to20 this act was not about offering a second chance but proclaiming his victory over sin and death Jesus preaching was a declaration that he had triumphed over the forces of evil and fulfilled God's plan for salvation this Proclamation assured those spirits and the entire spiritual Realm that Jesus was the Conqueror of sin and death this act showed that his salvation reaches across all time and space offering Redemption even to those who had died before his crucifixion number two defeating death and sin Jesus descent into hell was a crucial
part of his victory over death and sin by entering the realm of the dead he confronted the ultimate consequence of sin death itself in Revelation 1:8 Jesus states that he holds the keys of death and Hades this signifies his authority and victory over the powers of death and the grave Jesus's resurrection from the dead demonstrated his power to conquer death thereby breaking its hold on Humanity his victory means that death no longer has the final say eternal life is now available through him Jesus as sent to hell and his subsequent Resurrection broke the bonds of
death he paved the way for eternal life not just for himself but for all who believe in him his victory means that death is not the end for us but a passage to eternal life with God number three opening the gates of Heaven Jesus's actions in Hell also involved opening the gates of Heaven before his death and res Resurrection the Gates of Heaven were closed to humanity due to sin by defeating death and Rising again Jesus made it possible for believers to enter Heaven Ephesians 4 describes how Jesus led captives in his train symbolizing that
he freed the righteous Souls who had been waiting in shol or Hades this is Apostles Paul's words on the matter this is why it says when he ascended on high he took many captives and gave gifts to his people what does he ascended mean except that he also descended to the lower Earthly regions he who descended is the very one who ascended higher than all the heavens in order to fill the whole universe Ephesians 4: 8 to 10 his resurrection paved the way for all believers to enter Heaven fulfilling God's promise of eternal life this
act of opening Heaven's Gates signifies the completion of his redemp Ive work ensuring that those who believe in him can enjoy Eternal fellowship with God thus Jesus's journey to hell was not a defeat it was a Triumph by descending to hell he demonstrated his victory over sin death and Satan hell could not hold him and his presence there was a proclamation of his power and authority these actions preaching to the spirits defeating death and sin and opening the Gates of Heaven underscore the magnitude of Jesus's Triumph and the hope it brings to all believers through
his desent into hell and his subsequent Resurrection Jesus secured the ultimate Victory ensuring that death is not the end but the beginning of eternal life with God jesus' actions in Hell provide us with profound hope and Assurance of our Redemption his descent and victory over death mean that we no longer need to fear death or the consequences of sin by conquering hell Jesus has secured eternal life for all who believe in him this act of Salvation means that our sins are forgiven and we have the promise of eternal life with God Jesus Triumph assures us
