Shalom and welcome back to 'Israel with Aline! ' And to my house here in Jerusalem! Today we are going to talk about the origin of the Biblical peoples; where did the people of Israel come from?
What is their relationship with the Arabs, with the Edomites, with the Moabites, and much more. So get ready because we are going to dive into Biblical history and genealogy. So if you are ready, let's get started!
Let's start the Biblical genealogy from Noah and his three children: Shem, Ham and Japheth. From Shem come the Semitic peoples, which are a good part of Asia and what we are going to focus on today, from Ham comes a good part of the peoples of Africa, and from Japheth comes a good part of the European peoples. But let's go back now to Shem; I'm going to put it on the screen now, you can see the generations that follow up to Abraham.
And as the Bible itself says, he will give origin to many peoples, let's see now the main ones. Abraham will have three wives: Sarah, Hagar, and Ketura. With Sarah he will have a son named Isaac and Isaac himself will have two sons named Jacob and Esau, Jacob will have another name which is Israel.
So the descendants of Abraham, Isaac, and Jacob are the people of Israel. And precisely Jacob, his twelve sons will give rise to the twelve tribes of Israel, so here are our first people, the people of Israel are descended from Jacob. And Jacob's brother who is called Esau will give rise to another people, the Edomite people.
You can see here on the map where the Edomites lived. The word "Adom" in Hebrew means "Red", and the Edomite people, that is, "the red people" they get this name precisely because they are descendants of Esau, who according to the Bible was a redhead. As it is written in Genesis 25:25 "The first to come out was red, and his whole body was like a hairy garment; so they named him Esau.
" And from Esau will come forth another people, as you can see here from the marriage of Esau and Ada will come, descendants and one of them will be Amalek, and from Amalek comes the Amalekites, who are a great enemy of Israel. We see this throughout many Biblical passages, as in Genesis 36:12. And until our days, when the people of Israel have great enemies they refer to them here in Israel as Amalek, as the Amalekites although they are not always of direct descent, it was said for example in N@z1 Germany, that they were a way of being like Amalek.
Let's go back to Abraham and another of his wives named Hagar. Abraham and Hagar are going to have a son named Ishmael, Abraham's oldest son; and Hagar and Ishmael will be driven out, to where? To where Saudi Arabia is today, the Arabian Peninsula.
And who will Ishmael's descendants be? They will be the Arab People! So the Jews of today and the Arabs of today are literally cousins!
Because some are going to be descendants of Isaac, and some are going to be descendants of Ishmael. The Arabs will live in the Arabian Peninsula until the seventh century, when in the year 638, with the expansion of the Arab people and of Islam, they come and conquer part of this region where we are. So when we talk about the people of Israel and the Arabs, they are literally cousins!
And now Ketura, who is the least known of Abraham's wives, as it is written in Genesis 25: 1 and 2, they are going to have children together and you can see the genealogy here, and from these children will come Midian, who will originate the Midianite people. They may not be as well known as the other people we are going to talk about today, but we do know them through some Biblical passages; for example, who were the Midianites? It was Jethro, in Hebrew we call him Yithro.
Yithro, the father of Tzipporah, was Moses' father-in-law. Also when Joseph is sold by his brothers as it is written in Genesis 37:28, he is going to be sold to Midianites and Ishmaelites. Ishmaelites again, the descendants of Ishmael, from them, will also come the Arabs.
But not all people are descendants of Abraham, we also have Haran who is Abraham's brother, he will have a son named Lot, and here you know part of the story. It is the story of Sodom and Gomorrah when the city is completely destroyed, and he manages to escape with his two daughters into the desert and his wife will become a statue of salt. His daughters, thinking that the whole world has disappeared and that they have an obligation to repopulate the world, they will have children with their own father.
And each of these children, who are they? From the oldest daughter will be born Moab, who gives rise to the Moabites. And from the youngest daughter will come Benami, which gives rise to the Ammonites.
If we take a look at the map of the region now, we can see that there are even more people here, but not all of them have a certain origin. An example of this are the Phoenicians, who were a people who were super friendly with Israel and were located where Lebanon is today. We don't know their exact origin, but we know that they were part of the Canaanite people.
And there are also people who lived here, for example, the Philistines, who were not originally from this region, but came from other places. The Philistines arrived more or less 3,200 years ago here in this region as the Bible tells us, Caftor; but where is Caftor? There's a bit of a debate, but it's probably talking about the Greek islands, so they came by sea 3,200 years ago and when genetic studies were made, in the archaeological excavations here in Israel, they found skeletons of Philistines and the genetic analysis showed that they really came from another region and were not Canaanites or Semites like most of the people we've talked about so far.
The promise that God made to Abraham was indeed fulfilled, he is the father of many peoples; his descendants are countless! From the Arabs to the people of Israel, and so many other peoples here in the region; some have ceased to exist but others continue to exist and are so numerous, the promise has surely been fulfilled! And now when we take the Bible and read about the Midianites, about the Philistines, about the Phoenicians, about the people of Israel, about the Ishmaelites and others that we have talked about, you already know the origin.
In the end, it is also good to remember that we have our cultural differences, but deep down everybody here is cousins and family can sometimes have issues, but we always aspire for a future peace that will come between the peoples here in the region!
