And tell me- DO YOU HAVE HPV? Did HPV do anything to you? What part of the world are you from?
Write down there to help others know more about HPV. —— The HPV or human papillomavirus is an extremely contagious viral infection that is transmitted between people through skin-to-skin contact. It is not transmitted through blood or body fluids as is the case with HIV.
HPVs are called papillomaviruses because some types of HPV cause papillomas or warts. And these warts are reported from ancient Greece. There are more than 100 varieties of HPV, and many are transmitted by sexual contact - any type of oral, vaginal, anal, and even masturbation.
And, depending on the type of bone, they can cause problems with your genitals, mouth or throat. As I said, HPV is the most common STD in the world, more common than syphilis, gonorrhea or chlamydia. According to the Ministry of Health, 75% of sexually active Brazilians will come into contact with HPV throughout their lives, even those who have few sexual partners.
The peak of virus transmission occurs around 25 years. The possibility of contamination through objects, the use of a toilet and swimming pool or by sharing towels and underwear is not proven . How did they find out that HPV could cause cancer?
In the early 1980s a German scientist, DrHarald zur Hausen, proposed a radical theory for that time. That there was a link between this virus and cervical cancer. At that time, most experts did not believe that a virus could cause cancer.
It took him some time to gather the evidence, the evidence to support this theory. He managed to show that cancer cells contained viral DNA integrated into their genomes. With great perseverance he realized that cervical cancer biopsies contained fragments of HPV 16.
This was in 1983. A year later, Drzur Hausen discovered that HPV 18 also participated in this formation of cervical cancer. With these findings he proved that viruses could cause cancer, and specifically HPV 16 and 18 caused cervical cancer.
And with that he received the Nobel Prize in 2008. Today it is known that HPV 16 and 18 are found in almost 70% of cervical cancer. And around the world there are about 600,000 to 700,000 cases of cervical cancer a year, and more than 1/3 of these women die from this disease.
And worse, mortality in Brazil is 18 times higher than in developed countries where there is great vaccination coverage — so much so that countries like England and Australia can eliminate the incidence of cervical cancer by 2028. HPV can cause something besides cancer of the cervix? Yes, cervical cancer is the main type of cancer related to HPV infection.
But also most vaginal, vulval, p*nian, and anal cancers are also caused by HPV. Also, HPV infection increases the risk of some types of mouth and throat cancers. And look, rates of mouth cancer, especially of the tongue and oropharynx, are increasing, especially in people over 40 years old.
Although these cancers can sometimes be attributed to smoking or alcohol use, it is estimated that 70% of these cancers are caused by HPV. So HPV will always cause cancer? No!
In most cases, your body's immune system defeats an HPV infection before it forms warts or even cancer. HPV can go away on its own in 80-90% of cases, but about 10%-20% of cases people will not be able to eliminate the infection. These are called persistent infections.
So, yes, depending on the type of HPV you contracted, warts or even cancer can occur . About 13 types can cause cancer, they're called 'high risk' - mainly the two I've already mentioned, 16 and 18. People infected with 'high risk' HPV types for a long time are more likely to develop cancer.
What are the symptoms of a person with HPV? Most people who become infected don't even know they have HPV. It can be transmitted even when an infected person has no visible signs or symptoms .
Low-risk HPV genital infection can cause cauliflower-shaped warts on or around the genitals and spurs of men and women. In women, the lesions may appear in areas that are not always visible, such as the cervix and the va * This is why it is so important to have a pap smear. There is a likelihood of up to an 80% reduction in mortality from cervical cancer if the diagnosis is made early.
And considering that cervical tumor is a disease that can be silent or have vaginal bleeding as its only symptom, many women lose the chance of discovering the problem early because they don't have a pap smear. How to reduce the risk of HPV contagion? In two ways: Using a barrier protection method such as a condom or condom reduces the risk of transmitting HPV infections.
But… it's not fully effective. Because it is skin-to-skin contact, and it can be present in places that the condom is not protecting. And the other form is the HPV vaccine.
It does help to protect against cancer. Another question, can HPV be transmitted from mother to newborn? Yes, this transmission in childbirth can happen, but it is rare.
When this happens it can cause warts in the trachea, bronchi and lungs to respiratory papillomatosis . And it can cause problems for life. That's why it's very important to vaccinate!
The first vaccine was approved in 2006. And today it is even given by the SUS. And the vaccine is up to 99% effective for lesions related to HPV 16 and 100% for lesions related to HPV 18.
Depending on the type of vaccine, it also protects against genital warts. The US CDC recommends routine HPV vaccination for girls and boys ages 11 and 12, although it can be given from age 9 onwards. It is ideal for girls and boys to receive the vaccine before having sexual contact, before being exposed to HPV.
Once someone is infected with HPV, the vaccine may not be as effective or it may not work completely. Furthermore, the response to the vaccine is better at younger ages than at older ones. But if given before someone is infected, the vaccine can prevent most cases of cervical cancer.
SUS makes the vaccine available for girls between 9-14 years old and boys between 11-14 years old. There are two doses, six months apart. So, if you have a son or daughter at that age, it's worth getting vaccinated!
