fallen angels these beings have been depicted in films television shows and popular literature do fallen angels on the other hand only exist in the domain of fiction is there something more real about these ominous creatures yes they exist however not everything we hear about them in popular culture is accurate luke chapter 10 verses 18 to 20 he replied i saw satan fall like lightning from heaven i have given you authority to trample on snakes and scorpions and to overcome all the power of the enemy nothing will harm you however do not rejoice that the spirits
submit to you but rejoice that your names are written in heaven ephesians chapter 6 verse 12 for our struggle is not against flesh and blood but against the rulers against the authorities against the powers of this dark world and against the spiritual forces of evil in the heavenly realms in general the bible has a lot to say about angels angels are mentioned or featured nearly 300 times in the bible what are fallen angels angels that chose to rebel against god and were thus expelled from heaven are known as fallen angels they will suffer eternal wrath
and agony as a result of their rebellion against god jude chapter 1 verse 6 and the angels who did not keep their positions of authority but abandon their proper dwelling these he is kept in darkness bound with everlasting chains for judgment on the great day 2 peter chapter 2 verse 4 for if god did not spare the angels when they sinned but cast them deep into hell placing them in chains of darkness to be held for judgment they have made it their duty to drag as many people as possible into their eternal destiny because they
have no eternal hope scripture tells us that one-third revelation chapter 12 verse 4 of the angels likely followed lucifer later known as satan its tail swept a third of the stars out of the sky and flung them to the earth the dragon stood in front of the woman who was about to give birth so that it might devour her child the moment he was born satan envious of the worship god received decided to secede from heaven and take a portion of the inhabitants with him if an angel followed satan during this initial rebellion they fall
under the category of a fallen angel second they are doomed to spend eternity in the lake of fire revelation chapter 20 verse 10 they face eternal doom as a result of their rebellion against the almighty god this brings us to the end of our criteria discussion they wreck destruction and so discord because they are aware of their situation due of their rebellion they will attempt to bring as many souls down with them as possible this implies they will try to turn non-believers away from accepting jesus christ as their savior and lord by influencing tempting persuading
coercing and even possessing them are there any verses about these beings there are a few additional places in the bible where angels are mentioned in connection with satan revelation chapter 12 verse 9 describes satan and his angels being thrown to earth from heaven because of their rebellion matthew chapter 25 verse 41 describes the punishment satan and his angels will endure of the eternal fire then he will say to those on his left depart from me you who are cursed into the eternal fire prepared for the devil and his angels are there multiple fallen angels we
have verses in scripture that point to the fact that more than one demon exists in the world in fact in mark chapter 5 verse 9 we have a man who has many demons in him another verse in matthew chapter 12 43 talks about how one demon will go out of an unbeliever and bring back several more to inhabit that person once more they went across the lake to the region of the jerusalems when jesus got out of the boat a man with an impure spirit came from the tombs to meet him this man lived in
the tombs and no one could bind him anymore not even with a chain for he had often been chained hand and foot but he tore the chains apart and broke the irons on his feet no one was strong enough to subdue him night and day among the tombs and the hills he would cry out and cut himself with stones when he saw jesus from a distance he ran and fell on his knees in front of him he shouted at the top of his voice what do you want with me jesus son of the most high
god in god's name don't torture me for jesus had said to him come out of this man you impure spirit then jesus asked him what is your name my name is legion he replied for we are many and he begged jesus again and again not to send them out of the area a large herd of pigs was feeding on the nearby hillside the demons begged jesus send us among the pigs allow us to go into them he gave them permission and the impure spirits came out and went into the pigs the herd about 2 000
a number rushed down the steep bank into the lake and were drowned demons can spread lies john chapter 8 verse 44 to turn people away from god demons can have a certain sway over rulers daniel chapter 10 verses 12-13 then he continued do not be afraid daniel since the first day that you set your mind to gain understanding and to humble yourself before your god your words were heard and i have come in response to them but the prince of the persian kingdom resisted me 21 days then michael one of the chief princes came to
help me because i was detained there with the king of persia it's important to note satan isn't god's opposite god will always be considerably more powerful than satan satan isn't all-powerful all-knowing and all-present what is fictional about these beings fallen angels have already lost when we witness the powers of evil at work in our modern world it's easy to become discouraged but we must remember that jesus has already won the fight 1st john chapter 4 verse 4 you dear children are from god and have overcome them because the one who is in you is greater
than the one who is in the world [Music] demon's fate has already been decided it's only a matter of time before it happens regarding angels who have not fallen from heaven we can learn a few things about them in scripture angels praise the lord revelation chapter 4 verses 8 to 10 each of the four living creatures had six wings and was covered with eyes all around even under its wings day and night they never stop saying holy holy holy is the lord god almighty who was and is and is to come whenever the living creatures
give glory honor and thanks to him who sits on the throne and who lives forever and ever the 24 elders fall down before him who sits on the throne and worship him who lives forever and ever they lay their crowns before the throne the angels who meet the shepherds in the field during jesus birth also sing glory to god luke chapter 2 verse 14 angels are powerful creatures in terms of power the psalmist sets them just slightly beyond humans psalm chapter 8 verse 5 you have made them a little lower than the angels and crowned
them with glory and honor psalm chapter 103 verse 20 explains how they are mighty in strength bless the lord you his angels who excel in strength who do his word heeding the voice of his word fallen angels are rarely mentioned in the bible owing to the fact that the vast majority of angels in heaven have never fallen from grace and gone to the dark side some however chose to do so so before we discuss what the bible says about fallen angels we must first address the concept of angel free will fallen angels have free will
their fallenness is explained by their free will this is evident in the book of jude jude 5 to 6 new king james version but i want to remind you though you once knew this that the lord having saved the people out of the land of egypt afterward destroyed those who did not believe and the angels who did not keep their proper domain but left their own abode he has reserved in everlasting chains under darkness for the judgment of the great day according to jude the angels did not keep their proper domain the term proper domain
means rule or starting point the fallen angels did not keep their beginning which means they did not follow the path that they were created on the angels were created in the beginning to be in heaven with god praising him and doing his bidding they like humans were created to glorify him but humans were created to live on earth not angels nonetheless these angels left their beginning or their starting point in heaven they chose to reject god's plan for their lives by exercising their free will it's far too easy for satan to disguise himself because he
was once on god's side he like all other angels was created as an angel but he defected and took other angels with him and since his fall from heaven satan has brutalized humans which explains the birth of giants as well as the rise in demon possession during his ministry jesus encountered many demons and the demons knew who jesus was how many angels make up one-third of the angelic host what percentage of the angelic host is one-third angels that's a question that may never have a definitive answer but we can figure it out by looking at
what the bible says about how many angels we're dealing with here we've met a few angels in scripture including gabriel michael the two angels who descend to sodom the angels who descend to roll away the stone at jesus's resurrection and so on in genesis 28 we read of many angels in heaven when god promises to bless jacob and fulfill the promise the lord god made to his grandfather abraham matthew 26 53 brings us closer to an estimate but it still leaves us with more questions let us read what jesus has to say matthew 26 47-54
new king james version and while he was still speaking behold judas one of the twelve with a great multitude with swords and clubs came from the chief priests and elders of the people now his betrayer had given them a sign saying whomever i kiss he is the one seize him immediately he went up to jesus and said greetings rabbi and kissed him but jesus said to him friend why have you come then they came and laid hands on jesus and took him and suddenly one of those who were with jesus stretched out his hand and
drew his sword struck the servant of the high priest and cut off his ear but jesus said to him put your sword in its place for all who take the sword will perish by the sword or do you think that i cannot now pray to my father and he will provide me with more than twelve legions of angels how then could the scriptures be fulfilled that it must happen thus in matthew 26 53 jesus mentions more than 12 legions of angels that god the father could equip him with though the word more indicates that this
number is only a foretaste of the exact number nonetheless we are left wondering what is a legion a legion was defined as 6826 men at the time so when you consider that jesus mentions 12 legions of angels you can calculate a number by multiplying the number of legion soldiers by 12. thousand eight hundred and twenty six men in the legion multiplied by twelve angelic legions equals eighty one thousand nine hundred and twelve soldiers we've seen that jesus claims the father could command at least 82 000 angels to come to his aid on the night he
was arrested this is the only place in scripture where we find such a large number of angels but it tells us that there are more than 81 000 angels in heaven fallen angels and hell as judgment what happens after the fallen angels leave heaven in revelation 12 they are thrown to the earth whereas 2 peter 2 says they are thrown into hell how do we square these two passages we already know that hell was made for the devil and his angels 25 31 243 new king james version when the son of man comes in his
glory and all the holy angels with him then he will sit on the throne of his glory all the nations will be gathered before him and he will separate them one from another as a shepherd divides his sheep from the goats and he will set the sheep on his right hand but the goats on the left then the king will say to those on his right hand come you blessed of my father inherit the kingdom prepared for you from the foundation of the world for i was hungry and you gave me food i was thirsty
and you gave me drink i was a stranger and you took me in i was naked and you clothed me i was sick and you visited me i was in prison and you came to me then the righteous will answer him saying lord when did we see you hungry and feed you or thirsty and give you a drink when did we see you a stranger and take you in or naked and clothe you or when did we see you sick or in prison and come to you and the king will answer and say to them
assuredly i say to you inasmuch as you did it to one of the least of these my brethren you did it to me then he will also say to those on the left hand depart from me you cursed into the everlasting fire prepared for the devil and his angels for i was hungry and you gave me no food i was thirsty and you gave me no drink i was a stranger and you did not take me in naked and you did not clothe me sick and in prison and you did not visit me [Music] according
to matthew 25 41 the everlasting fire hell was prepared for the devil and his angels in other words hell was never intended for a single person though judas and others will undoubtedly end up there in the end satan and the fallen angels were the intended recipients of hell hell was created in heaven as a final punishment for the leaders of the great rebellion but the lord allows others in the nations he judges to go there as well because of choice free will and man's god-given responsibility to choose his eternal destination whether heaven or hell and
it is hell that satan and the fallen angels the one-third of those who rebelled alongside him will go to at the end of all things god will exact his wrath on those who have rebelled against him and satan and the fallen angels will not escape unscathed we've seen here that fallen angels exist despite the fact that fallen from grace is a difficult concept for some of us to grasp we'd like to believe that angels can't fall but biblical history proves otherwise the fallen angels are known to be one-third of the angelic host that follows satan
in the great rebellion and attempts to overthrow god and his throne and reign in order to take over heaven we also know that the attempt was a colossal failure and that satan and his rebellious angels were expelled from heaven
