during this time King Ahab ruled Israel but under his Reign the people were LED astray to worship Bal a false god influenced greatly by Queen Jezebel a severe drought had gripped the land as a judgment from God now before we proceed further into the story here are some things you should know about bow worship and why the practice was condemned besides the obvious idol worship that came with Bal worship which often mixed with other religious practices and diluted core beliefs historical and biblical sources show that it also involved terrible things like child sacrifice on top
of that there are are accounts that say Beal worship included ritualistic sexual practices including sacred prostitution which are clearly morally and ethically troubling these practices were detested by our Lord God one day King Ahab called upon his trusted servant Obadiah to search for water and pasture for their animals Obadiah was a devout believer in the Lord and he had secretly hidden a 100 prophets of the Lord in two caves to protect them from Jezebel's wrath as Obadiah searched he encountered Elijah recognizing him Obadiah bowed down and said is it really you my lord Elijah yes
it is I go tell your master Elijah is here what have I done wrong that you are handing your servant over to Ahab to be put to death as surely as the Lord your God lives there is not a nation or Kingdom where my master has not sent someone to look for you but now you tell me to go to my master and say Elijah is here I don't know where the spirit of the Lord may carry you when I leave if I go and tell Ahab and he doesn't find you he will kill me
yet I your servant have worshiped the Lord since my youth as the Lord Almighty lives whom I serve I will surely present myself to Ahab today Obadiah agreed and went to find Ahab when Ahab heard the news he went to meet Elijah is that you you troubler of Israel I have not made trouble for Israel but you and your father's family have you have abandoned the Lord's commands and have followed the balls now summon the people from all over Israel to meet me on Mount Carmel and bring the 450 prophets of Bal and the 400
prophets of Ashera who eat at Jezebel's table on the appointed day Elijah stood firm on Mount Carmel King Ahab sent to all the people people of Israel and gathered the prophets together at Mount Carmel and Elijah came near to all the people and said how long will you go limping between two different opinions if the Lord is God follow him but if Bal then follow him then Elijah proposed a test to the 450 prophets of Baal each side would prepare a bull for sacrifice but no fire would be lit instead they would call on their
God to send fire from heaven from morning until noon the prophets of ba danced shouted and even cut themselves hoping ba would respond but there was silence no fire not even a flicker shout louder surely he is a god perhaps he is deep in thought or busy or traveling maybe he is sleeping and must be awakened the prophets of Bal cried aloud and cut themselves after their custom with swords and lances until the blood gushed out upon them and as midday passed they raved on until the time of the offering of the oblation but there
was no voice no one answered no one paid attention when it was Elijah's turn he carefully rebuilt the altar of the Lord with 12 Stones one for each tribe of Israel he dug a trench around the altar arranged the wood cut the bull into pieces and laid it on the wood then he did something unexpected he had water poured over the altar three times until the trench was filled and at the time of the offering of the oblation Elijah the prophet came near and said oh Lord God of Abraham Isaac and Israel let it be
known this day that you are God in Israel and that I am your servant and that I have done all these things at your word answer me oh Lord answer me that this people may know that you oh Lord are God and that you have turned their hearts back immediately fire fell from heaven consuming the sacrifice the wood the stones and even the water in the trench the people fell on their faces and cried out the Lord he's God the Lord he's God Elijah then instructed the people to seize the prophets of Baal they were
taken down to the Kishon Valley and met their end marking a return to the worship of the one true God as a final Testament to God God's power Elijah prayed and after years of drought rain began to Fall ending the long dry spell through Elijah's unwavering Faith God's might was undeniably revealed through Elijah's unwavering faith and courage we see a powerful demonstration of God's sovereignty and power the story reminds us that no matter the odds standing firm in faith can lead to incredible outcomes [Music] [Music]
