hello English Learners and welcome to the Daily English podcast I'm Paul your host for today and we have a special guest with us who's ready to help you unlock some of the Magic in the English language welcome to the show thank you how you doing today I'm doing great thanks and I'm really excited to be here with you and all our listeners okay so today we're going on a bit of an adventure we're going to be exploring the World of Harry Potter to discover some new and interesting English vocabulary now even if you haven't read
the books or seen the movies don't worry you'll still pick up some really cool words and phrases that you can use in your everyday English that's right and it's a fun way to learn because who doesn't love a little bit of magic exactly yeah so let's Jump Right In now the Harry Potter stories take place in two different worlds one is the regular World kind of like the one we live in and then there's the Magical World hidden away from us ordinary folk so what do they call People Like Us those who can't do magic
H in the Harry Potter World well they have a special word for us and it's muggle so you and I we're Muggles it's a simple word but it tells us a lot it means we're not part of that secret world of witches and wizards muggle I like that sounds kind of funny but also a little mysterious so we're Muggles going about our daily lives completely unaware of all this magic happening around it and then there are these witches and wizards living in their own world with all sorts of amazing creatures like what about that creature
that's half horse and half eagle how Do's get those two mixed up ah you're thinking of the hippogriff they're pretty hard to forget right half horse half eagle powerful wings and they can be a little bit tricky to handle you have to show them respect before they'll let you get close hgraph yeah that's it it's like something out of a myth or Legend but it's alive in the Harry Potter World yeah that's what makes it so fascinating right it takes these Fantastical ideas and makes them feel real and there are so many other creatures in
the books each with its own unique name characteristics like that magical bird that can rise from its ashes the uh the Phoenix that's a powerful symbol not just in Harry Potter but in many cultures around the world it represents rebirth renewal the idea that even after something terrible happens you can come back stronger than before the phoenix WoW I'm already learning so much and I bet our listeners are too it's amazing how these words from Harry Potter can teach us about English yeah and also about life itself it's like each word has a story behind
it absolutely and that's what makes language so interesting it's not just about words in grammar it's about the stories we tell and the worlds we create with those words and in the Harry Potter World words are incredibly powerful they literally have the power to change things just think about the spells that witches and wizards use spells yeah it's like a magic word that makes something happen what's one of your favorite spells from the books well one that always comes to mind is lumos such a simple spell but so useful you just say lumos and the
tip of your wand like up like a little torch it's perfect for when you're exploring a Dark Castle or wandering through a Forbidden Forest lumos that's brilliant it's like having a flashlight built into your wand I know and it's such a cool word too lumos it sounds almost like the word luminous which means something that gives off light exactly JK rling the author of Harry Potter was incredibly clever with her use of language she often shows words that sounded magical and evocative and sometimes she even invented her own words but they always felt like they
belonged in that world so learning these magical spells is almost like learning new vocabulary words right each spell has its own meaning and its own effect just like words in English and I bet if we paid attention we'd find that a lot of those words have roots in other languages like Latin or Greek that's a great Point many English words have their origins in other languages and that's what makes English so rich and diverse and it's also what makes it fun to learn because you can start to see those connections between different languages big puzzle
and we're putting the pieces together one word at a time M but in the Harry Potter World they don't just learn spells right they're other magical subjects like potions for example potions oh yes those are a big part of magical education they're like magic in a bottle or rather in a cauldron witches and wizards mix different ingredients together following precise instructions and they can create potions that do all sorts of things from healing injuries to changing your appearance potions that sounds both exciting and a little dangerous like what if you get the recipe wrong that's
right potions can be very powerful and it's important to follow the instructions carefully just like in real life if you're experimenting with something new you need to be careful and do your research that makes sense so you have your spells your potions and of course no wizard would be complete without their uh their wand of course the wand is like a tool but it's also much more than that it's an extension of the Wizard's magic a way for them to channel their power and make things happen and each wand is unique right right like they
choose their Wizard or something like that exactly there's a special bond between a wizard and their wand it's said that the wand chooses the wizard and that no two wands are exactly alike they're often made from different kinds of wood and they contain magical cores like a phoenix feather or a dragon heart string wow it's like each wand has its own personality and that reminds me of another important theme in Harry Potter friendship Harry Ron and Hermione they're such a close group of friends and they go through so much together their friendship really helps them
through those tough times that's a great observation friendship is definitely one of the most powerful themes in the books har Ron and Hermione rely on each other for support encouragement and sometimes even a bit of comic relief they show us what true friendship means being there for each other no matter what it's like they say friends are the family you choose and in Harry Potter we see all sorts of other important qualities celebrated like bravery ambition kindness and wisdom these are qualities that we can all strive for whether we're mugg or Wizards that's right and
it's interesting how those qualities are represented by the different houses at Hogwart School of Witchcraft and Wizardry you have Gryffindor known for bravery Slidin known for ambition Hufflepuff known for kindness and Ravenclaw known for wisdom it shows us that there are many different paths to Greatness and that each quality has its own unique value it's like we're all sorted into different houses based on our personalities and our values and speaking of personalities the characters in Harry Potter are so welldeveloped from the Brave and selfless Harry yeah to the brilliant and resourceful Hermione to the loyal
and sometimes goofy Ron and of course we can't forget the villains like the power hungry Lord Voldemort each character even the villains teaches us something about ourselves and about the world it's one of the reasons why these stories resonate with so many people they explore Universal themes that we can all relate to like good versus evil love and loss and the Power of Choice so it's not just about learning new words it's about learning about life through these words and the stories they tell and there's so many more layers to uncover in the World of
Harry Potter so many more words and ideas to explore but I think we need to pause here for now and let our listeners digest all this amazing vocabulary I agree we've covered a lot of ground but there's still so much more to discover welcome back English Learners I'm so glad you're joining us again as we continue our exploration of English vocabulary through the Magical World of Harry Potter it's great to be back I'm ready for more more enchanting words and insightful discoveries we were just talking about some of those incredible places in the Harry Potter
Universe like Hogwarts and Dagon alley but there's another location that always sends shivers down my spine The Forbidden Forest ah yes the Forbidden Forest it's such an evocative name isn't it it conjures up images of shadowy trees mysterious creatures and a sense of danger lurking around every corner it's a place where the line between wonder and fear becomes blurred exactly it's like stepping into a dark fairy tale where you never know what you might encounter a and it's not just a place of physical danger but also a place to test the character's courage speaking of
Courage what does that word mean to you in the context of Harry Potter it seems like it's more than just facing a scary creature or powerful villain you're absolutely right courage in Harry Potter takes many forms it's about facing your fears yes but it's also about standing up for what you believe in even when it's difficult to run popular remember Neville Longbottom he was often afraid but he always found the strength to do what he thought was right even when it meant standing up to his friends that's a great example Neville wasn't the most naturally
gifted wizard but he had a huge heart and an unwavering sense of right and wrong he teaches us that courage isn't about being Fearless it's about doing what needs to be done even when you're scared precisely and that's a message that resonates with all of us Muggles and wizards alike we all face challenges in life situations where we need to summon our inner strength and do what's right even if it's not easy and sometimes courage means asking for help when you need it right like admitting that you can't do everything alone absolutely it takes courage
to admit that you need help to be vulnerable and Trust others to support you and in Harry Potter we see that teamwork is often the key to overcoming obstacles Harry Ron and her Min are a great example of this they each have their own strengths and weaknesses but together they form an incredible team they compliment each other perfectly Harry's bravery Ron's loyalty and Hermione's intelligence they make it Unstoppable Force when they work together exactly they teach us that we can achieve so much more when we collaborate when we share our ideas and talents and support
each other through challenges and that's true in real life as well whether we're working on a school project a job assignment or even just trying to navigate the ups and downs of life we need each other and sometimes we need a little extra some to keep us going when things get tough with that word again the one that signifies that feeling of believing that things will get better hope that's the word and it's powerful one hope is what keeps us going when things seem dark and difficult it's the belief that even in the face of
adversity there's a possibility of a brighter future and in the Harry Potter World hope is often the key to overcoming seemingly insurmountable obstacles it's like that famous quote from Albus Dumbledore happiness can be found even in the darkest of times if one only remembers to turn on the light what a beautiful quote and it reminds us that even in the midst of challenges we have the power to choose hope we can choose to believe in ourselves in each other and in the possibility of a better tomorrow I love that choosing hope even when it's hard
and that's what makes these words from Harry Potter so much more than just vocabulary they're words that carry weight that Inspire us that teach us something about ourselves and the world around us I couldn't agree more there are words that have the power to change the way we think the way we feel and the way we Act they invite us to be more courageous more compassionate more hopeful not just in the Magical World of Harry Potter but in our own everyday lives as well this has been such a fascinating discussion I've learned so much and
I'm sure our listeners have too but before we move on I want to make sure we take a moment to really appreciate all the wonderful vocabulary we've encountered so far let see we've talked about Muggles hippogryphs Phoenix's spells potions wands friendship bravery ambition kindness wisdom courage love teamwork and hope that's quite a collection it's amazing how these words have woven themselves into our conversation so naturally they've become more than just words on a page they've become tools for understanding The Human Experience for exploring the complexities of our emotions and relationships and I love how they've
helped us connect with the World of Harry Potter on a deeper level they've given us a new lens through which to view the story the characters and the theme exactly they've enriched our understanding and appreci apption of the books and they've given us a new vocabulary to express our thoughts and feelings about them it's been a real treat exploring these words and their meanings with you but there's still more to come that's right we have one more part of our journey to go so stay tuned English Learners we'll be back with more magical vocabulary and

you can use to make your English more expressive and engaging but I know some of our listeners might be wondering how to actually use these words in their everyday convers that's a great question and the answer is simpler than you might think it's all about being mindful of the words you use and finding opportunities to weave them into your conversations just like JK Rowling wo magic into the World of Harry Potter so it's not about memorizing definitions or reciting lists of words it's about using them in a way that feels natural and meaningful exactly let's
say you're talking to a friend about a challenge they're facing instead of just saying that sounds tough you could say wow must take a lot of courage to go through something like that or imagine you're watching a movie with a friend and you see a character doing something incredibly Brave you could turn to your friend and say that's amazing bravery it reminds me of Harry facing Voldemort exactly by using these words from Harry Potter you're not just expanding your vocabulary you're also adding a layer of depth and richness to your conversations and it's a fun
way to connect with other Harry Potter fans too you can use these words to talk about your favorite characters scenes and themes from the books absolutely it's like having a secret language that only Harry Potter fans understand and even if you're not a huge fan of Harry Potter yeah you can still use these words to express yourself in new and interesting ways that's right for example you could use the word muggle to describe someone who doesn't understand something that's obvious to you or you could use the word hippogriff to describe something that's really impressive or
