As creators, we often spend hours on end watching videos on how to get better at making videos rathe...
Video Transcript:
I think we all struggle with this as creators we spend endless amounts of time consuming video after video after video trying to convince ourself that we're progressing as creators by learning more about how to create and make videos without actually making the videos themselves and I myself have been struggling with this massively recently I've fallen into the Trap of kind of wanting to know everything about making a YouTube video and you know know it be perfect and me understand all of the theory and you know that then just makes me realize how you know incapable
I am or makes me think that I'm incapable of producing a good YouTube video and and therefore I don't or it just in my head I've got this perception of like all of these things that I now need to do in order for it to be good and all of those things are hard and require motivation and then I just put them off and don't do it and then I don't end up creating and then go back to watching another video thinking that it's going to therefore make making the video even easier because now I
know how to make the video even better and more and I still don't and I don't make the video that was a release and so I've identified this as a big problem for me and probably for you um so I've started to think about how I can tackle it I understand that you know consumption of content is important you know it is important to learn the theory it is important to know what you need to focus on but at the same time it's equally if not more important to actually you know keep putting that into
practice and keep being consistent and keep making the videos there has to be a balance and I think a lot of creators particularly when they begin because there's so much to learn don't have that balance they spend too much time consuming and and not enough time creating but in my opinion if you spend more time creating you just naturally will get better over time and with a little bit of Education just to steer you in the right directions at the right moments you progress so much faster than just consuming consuming consuming consuming and so my
plan for tackling this is by doing two things right the first is around my content strategy so actually I've identified over kind of the last few weeks of research that there are lots of videos on YouTube that are really popping off with relatively kind of little editing and little scripting and you know not that good a thumbnail um the title and the topic is interesting and intriguing and that's what drives the click and people are watching and yet all of this theory is telling me that I have to have a really good thumbnail the intro
has to be really good needs to be you know well optimized you've got retention editing you need to keep the watch time high and that's those are the things that are putting me off making a video but I'm seeing all of these videos pop off with that that go completely against all of that education and I'm like wow how can I tap into this how can I use that understanding to make it easier for me to make videos and so I'm not just going in with a blind approach here I'm going with a 50/50 approach
where 50% of the content that I'm going to create is going to be really really low effort really kind of not much editing like this video itself um and like one that I posted two weeks ago that's actually on 58,000 views which is the highest video I've ever got on YouTube I've made over 100 videos and oh my God I can't believe it it took off and it worked and that video was planned I have like I said I've spent the last couple of weeks finding topics and titles that like have no packaging and basically
thinking about how can I repurpose that title or repurpose that topic like based off my own experiences based off my own stories because clearly people find that kind of title and topic interesting intriguing enough to click and then enough to like just sit and listen to Somebody's speak about that area perhaps because it's relatable um and you know there's emotion in there and like it's how can I you know make that my own um and that's what I've begun to do with 50% of my strategy because it then means that these videos are super low
effort I just need to identify the topic I can just pick up the camera and microphone and just speak like here I'll do a little bit of editing I'll put a a nice music track behind this and just cut up wherever I've blundered but there's no there's no overthinking on this piece of content you know and it allows me to be con consistent because at the end of the day if I haven't got a video for this week I can just show up on camera and speak right and then the other 50% is actually the
higher effort stuff because I still want to do that I still want to put into practice what I'm learning because there is still a place on YouTube for that even though editing has slowed down a bit and you know this kind of retention editing the Mr beas ification is going away there is still a place for you know highly edited and you know good engaging content that's being well scripted and you think you know I want to do that you know higher effort content because I just think that like that will just improve me as
just somebody that makes videos and it would just make me a better content creator rather than just sitting here and spieling every week so I want to do that stuff but but the problem with that stuff is as I've alluded to it's high effort you need to be motivated to do it you need to script write you need to do more planning you need to do more of everything right and that is I think the biggest problem for me and probably the biggest problem for you is just there's just too much to think about and
therefore you don't do it um and so the second part of my strategy to combating all of these problems I'm facing is I have downloaded a app blocking I'm using one called jomu I think that's how you pronounce it I'll I'll Whack It Up on screen and you can use other ones like this there's opal this one was just cheaper it's for iPhone and mac and how I'm using this is I'm picking points in the day for me it's in the morning where I know that I can really focus and get the hard stuff done
and I'm blocking everything everything because the biggest issue that I find is when I make YouTube videos as soon as I'm hit with a barrier that is me script writing or doing something hard I just go to scrolling on my phone I just go and do this thing that's going to give me the quick dopamine hit however I started using this a couple of weeks ago and it has drastically changed my my mindset and ability to just get stuff done because when I block everything on my phone and I block everything on my computer I
know right Ben the only thing that you can do now is script writing or do that hard thing related to that YouTube video like this is your time to do it and you've got no other options right and I thought that I would still find distraction I still thought that I would still go and procrastinate but I don't like just having that blocker it just puts me in this mindset where it's like this is when you're getting it done and for me that's like between 7 and 11: I block off all apps and that's what
I do I'm a full-time content creator so I have that the luxury of being able to do that if I wasn't I would probably do this before work in the morning so like get up early and do like 6:00 till 9: or 7 till 9: hard work and then also in the evening because I also have a slot in the afternoon 3: till 5 is also the time where I block all this off and I block all my apps off and I'm like right this is also the time you got to do the hard stuff
now you got no other choice again if you if you've got a full-time job or school probably do it in the evening perhaps like 7: till 9:00 you know especially in the evening when you're just your motivation levels are down and you really are like you just can't be asked to do anything but it works it really is working for me and I think that's what's then allowing me to produce and you know contribute more time and effort to the higher produce videos that I haven't been making because I've just been putting them off and
just looking for Absolut anything else that I can do other than that right and so those are you know the two strategies there that I would recommend like the video content strategy where you do half low effort half High effort go and search for the videos that are super low effort that are popping off and try and replicate them with your own style story and then also try and think about what sort of high effort videos you want to make you know and whether you optimize them for search or whether they're just ones that people
are going to click from the homepage and then secondly download the blocking app so that you can have that deep focus you can really you know pay attention to the stuff that you really just can't be asked to do most of the time and hopefully you'll begin to solve your problems produce more videos cuz that's the ultimate goal here produce more videos and be consistent at producing those videos and hopefully you'll be on your way to achieving what you want to achieve
