Before we pray, I'd like to share a short message with you, and then we'll pray together. There is a struggle that every single one of us faces deep within: there are two forces at war, the desires of the flesh and the longing of the spirit. This battle is not something you can escape, no matter how much you grow in faith, no matter how deeply you study God's word, and no matter how much you desire to live a righteous life.
It is an ongoing war, one that will persist as long as you walk this earth. Your flesh is your human nature, the part of you that craves things that pull you away from God. It's the old self, the part you were born with that naturally leans towards sin.
It is impatient; it is self-seeking. It wants pleasure, comfort, and control. It tells you to act on impulse—to chase after what feels good in the moment, even if it leads you away from the path God has set before you.
And here's the truth: your flesh does not care about your spiritual growth; it does not care about your peace, your purpose, or your relationship with God. It only cares about satisfying its cravings. On the other hand, your spirit—the part of you that longs for God—desires holiness.
It hungers for righteousness; it seeks the presence of Jesus, the guidance of the Holy Spirit, and the peace that comes from living in obedience to God. But the flesh and the spirit are at war; they are in direct opposition to each other. The desires of the flesh are not neutral; they actively resist the spirit.
The Bible describes this struggle in Galatians 5:16-18: "So I say, walk by the Spirit, and you will not gratify the desires of the flesh. For the flesh desires what is contrary to the Spirit, and the Spirit what is contrary to the flesh. They are in conflict with each other, so that you are not to do whatever you want.
But if you are led by the Spirit, you are not under the law. " This conflict is the reason why you can love God and still wrestle with sin. It's why you can desire holiness but still feel drawn to temptation.
It's why some days, despite knowing what is right, you still choose what is wrong. This battle does not mean you are failing in your faith; it means you are human. It means you are in the fight.
But this raises an important question: how do you win? How do you live by the Spirit and not fall back into the ways of the flesh? How do you make sure you are walking in faith rather than being led by the things you see and feel in the moment?
How do you listen to the voice of the Holy Spirit when the temptations of the flesh feel so loud and overwhelming? The answer is surrender—not surrendering to sin, but surrendering to the Spirit. Learning to yield, learning to recognize that victory does not come from your own strength but from the power of God working in you.
Because here's the truth: you cannot win this battle on your own; you weren't meant to. If self-discipline alone could overcome the flesh, you wouldn't need the Holy Spirit. If willpower were enough, Jesus wouldn't have sent a Helper, but He did, and that changes everything.
Victory comes when you stop trying to fight this battle alone, when you stop relying on your own ability to resist temptation and start leaning on God's power. When you stop seeing this struggle as proof of your weakness and start seeing it as proof of your need for the Holy Spirit. So, what does it mean to walk by the Spirit?
It means choosing daily to align your heart with God's will. It means feeding your spirit more than you feed your flesh. What you consume, what you dwell on, what you allow into your heart and mind—these things determine which side wins the battle.
The flesh thrives when it is entertained, indulged, and left unchecked. The spirit thrives when it is nourished by prayer, by Scripture, by worship, and by surrender. You don't overcome by being strong; you overcome by being dependent.
The more you lean on the Spirit, the stronger you become—not because of your own power, but because you are drawing from the One who never fails. And that is how you win the battle—not by fighting harder, but by surrendering deeper; not by trusting in yourself, but by trusting in Him. Now, let’s take a moment to join our spirits together in prayer.
Heavenly Father, thank you for the privilege of being able to come before You just as I am: flawed, broken, yet deeply loved and accepted by Your mercy. Thank You that I don't have to hide from You, that in Your presence I find acceptance, healing, and renewal. Thank You for Your endless love that sees beyond my flaws, for Your mercy that never runs out, and for Your grace that meets me right where I am, yet never leaves me unchanged.
Lord, I recognize that without You, I am powerless. I struggle against my own weaknesses, against the desires of my flesh that seek to pull me away from You. The battle is real, and at times it feels overwhelming, but I know that I am not alone in this fight.
You are my strength, my refuge, and my victory. Through You, I can overcome. Your word instructs me in Ephesians 4:22-24 to put off my old self, the part of me that is corrupted by deceitful desires, and to be renewed in the spirit of my mind, putting on the new self created to be like You in true righteousness and holiness.
But, Lord, I confess that I fall short sometimes. Return to old habits, revisiting sins I should have left behind. I entertain thoughts that do not honor You.
I allow my emotions to lead me when I should be walking by faith, and sometimes I even try to justify my sins, convincing myself they are small, that they do not matter. But deep down, I know the truth: sin separates me from You. I do not want to live in that separation; I do not want to be bound by anything that hinders my walk with You.
So today, Lord, I ask for Your mercy. Please forgive me for the times I have let sin take root in my heart. Forgive me for the moments I have chosen my desires over Your will.
Forgive me for ignoring the gentle conviction of Your Spirit, for giving in to the temptations that I knew were not from You. Cleanse me, Father. Wash me in the precious blood of Jesus and make me new.
Purify my heart so that nothing within me rebels against Your holiness. I surrender every struggle to You, every temptation, every weakness, every harmful mindset, every ungodly habit. I lay them at Your feet because I know that I cannot overcome them on my own, but You, Lord, are my deliverer.
When I am weak, You are strong; when I stumble, You lift me up; when I cannot see a way forward, You make a way. So I do not boast in my own efforts; I boast in You, Jesus. I boast in Your ability to change me, to sustain me, to transform me into the person You have called me to be.
Break every chain that still binds me, O Lord. Set me free from the sins that have held me captive for too long. Renew my spirit so that I can walk in the freedom You have already purchased for me.
Open my eyes to see temptation for what it truly is: a trap that seeks to pull me away from You. When the enemy whispers lies, remind me of Your truth. When my flesh craves what is harmful, give me the wisdom and strength to resist.
Lord, Your word says in 1 Corinthians 10:13 that You always provide a way out of temptation; help me to take it. Renew my mind, Lord. Let me see sin the way You see it, not as something small or harmless, but as something that steals my peace, dulls my spiritual hunger, and separates me from Your best.
Give me a heart that longs for righteousness. Replace my old desires with a deep hunger for holiness. Let my delight be in You, not in the fleeting pleasures of the world.
You have called me to put on the new self, to walk in the identity You have given me—one that is marked by righteousness and holiness. I know I cannot do this alone, but I believe in Your transforming power. I trust that what You have begun in me, You will bring to completion.
I cling to the promise in 1 John 1:9: if we confess our sins, He is faithful and just to forgive us our sins and to cleanse us from all unrighteousness. So today, I receive Your forgiveness. I embrace the fresh start You are offering me.
I refuse to let my past define me; I will not be weighed down by guilt, for You have removed my sins as far as the east is from the west. I will not live in shame, for I am covered by Your grace. I am stepping forward in the newness of life that You have given me, leaving behind everything that does not align with Your goodness.
Father, give me a passion for prayer, a thirst for Your word, and a heart that is quick to obey. Let me love what You love and hate what You hate. Make me sensitive to Your voice so that when temptation comes, I will recognize it and flee from it.
I praise You, Lord, for the victory that is already mine through Jesus Christ. The enemy no longer has power over me; I am no longer bound by my past. I am a new creation, and the old world has passed away.
I declare that I am free; I am redeemed; I am Yours. In Jesus's mighty and precious name, I pray. Amen.
