this video is sponsored by Squarespace the internet's best platform for designing your dream website the phrase time management makes me cringe I instantly think of these crowded calendars which micromanage every single minute of time and then the rich outof touch influencers that somehow have the time for a 2-hour morning routine and they think that that's realistic for everyone else it's become this toxic hole of hyper productivity one that is soared to you the viewer as almost a lie promising fulfillment which never ends up coming but time management doesn't have to be like that whatever Faith you hold you and I are mortal in this material world and it feels like an insult to all life to just wander through it aimlessly without seeing all that it has to offer you and despite the noise time management does actually have a place in a normal person's routine it can be practical realistic and most importantly sustainable over the long run I want to share my own experiences juggling many hobbies through college through work through the realities of everyday life that many others tend to just sweep under the rug and act like they don't exist what if you have an exhausting day job what if you have loved ones to look after or what if you just simply don't have the time no matter how hard you try because of this massive College workload these are real issues and we have to consider them I'm young and I'm in experienced in a million different ways but the least I can do is share what I have been through and hopefully do my best to sympathize with your situation and consider what others might be going through if you want more time for your hob Hobbies then ironically it might be best to ignore the time aspect completely and actually focus on something else a more hidden danger and there something that leaves you tired and lifeless and even when you do have the time to get stuff done you can't bring yourself to do it because your motivation is at rock bottom and there's no drive there and worst of all it happens to everyone and it's almost never your fault you can't follow your interests if you have no energy you come home from work or college and maybe you've been writing all day maybe you've been on your feet all day or you're just overs stimulated by all the noises all the the commuting all the people's demands being thrown on top of you and that stuff can be absolutely draining it's so unrealistic then for me to sit here and say yeah bro just come home and you know stop playing the piano or go do that tennis you're talking about it's not happening half the time yes some people have the discipline to do that and you know that's impressive but it's unfair to just lump everyone in the same category because we're all different and even then even if you can do it you don't want to feel like you're forcing yourself cuz you know at the end of the day you're supposed to enjoy a hobby so the real solution might not be in regards to time but energy how can you work through and around your energy levels to then approach your hobbies with you know a fresh mind and a happy Outlook after a busy day you could take 10 adol eight snooes and some liters of coffee and then just power through the fatigue but I have a feeling that's not sustainable in the long run so instead of working through your energy levels why not work around them and this is something you see very commonly in the world of reading back when I was in college most of my lectures were concentrated in the mornings and this was pretty hefty stuff it was biostats it was chemistry it was evolutionary history and you know I'm a big notetaker so I'm sitting there for 2 three hours straight trying my best to like hammer down the notes because some of these lectures are going F through the Powerpoints do you think when I got home after all of that mental heavy lifting I had the energy and the patience to sit down and read you know some chunky book like The Wealth of Nations or maybe some Herodotus it wasn't happening but maybe I did have the energy for something easier to get through but still you know thoughtful and interesting something like some an yunga or some Albert kamu I save the heaviest stuff for the morning when my mind is more fresh and I'm ready to take on the clunky text and maybe some more challenging ideas imagine now if I had come home from college and forced myself to read the more difficult book I would not only be Lessing engage in the text but I'd probably start to hate the hobby that I once loved and that's a real shame so maybe all it takes to keep things fun and fulfilling is to just have a look at your energy levels throughout the day see where they're high see where they're low and maybe build your life around this if you don't have the patience to do something after work or school then you're free to do so you don't have to and you can maybe see where else could I position this that I'm more prepared to take it on and give it the care it deserves I like to sometimes take a hobby and then get its subcomponents and split them up into the more demanding ones versus the more relaxed ones so the idea is after work when you're tired you have low energy you focus on the more relaxed aspects but then when you're you know you have a burst of energy you're feeling fresh you're feeling good you focus on the maybe more challenging demanding ones let's say for example that you come home after a long shift and you're tired you don't want to sit down and study Spanish so instead you put on a Spanish t TV show and you try and spot some new words for example and then when you do have that burst of energy you switch to the more demanding elements of this hobby focusing on learning new grammar practicing conversations or just learning new vocab how you approach this is totally up to you but the point is to recognize that each Hobbies have different subc components to them and some don't require as much energy as the next that's already a game changer but it's only the first half of the technique so if it sounds still a bit iffy to you then don't worry there's hope you can take this idea changing when you do something and actually extend it on a longer time frame but what do I mean by that let's say your two favorite hobbies were Woodworking and camping now that's a pretty realistic pair I can see someone like you doing that woodworking is Chill your setup is there you come home and you just get started there's no need for any planning or anything and it is rejuvenating it fills you with energy and it's it's chill whereas on the other hand camping is a much bigger time investment unless you're really well prepared and disciplined you'll need hours to get ready you'll have to gather the equipment organize with friends plan your trip and even before You' started the activity you might be tired already can you see the difference there when you come home from a day job your mind is not in the mental state to deal with all the planning all the the hiking the campfires and none of that is bad it's just active and it's demanding I know I'm exaggerating by using camping as an example but it's just to illustrate the point in contrast woodworking is rejuvenating you can come home and even after a long day you feel refreshed and you find this little moment of Peace in a busy day rather than draining you more it helps you calm down and rest maybe enough that you can be happier when you know spending time with your loved ones later on and overall it just grounds you the trick then is to look at your hobbies and divide them into two groups the more relaxed types versus the more active types similar to what we did before except with entire Hobbies this time what you can do then is take the relaxed hobbies and reserve them for bus bus periods where there's lots of work not much spare time but you still want to get something done and then you can take the more active hobbies and put those in times where there's less work holidays weekends and just periods overall where you're you're more energized and you're more ready to take them on that way you can give everything the attention it deserves without having to fight this uphill battle against motivation on the topic of work we have to talk about money I'm afraid and I'm not a business account and I do my best to avoid that chatter because it gets obnoxious fast but when it comes to having more time for your hobbies money is at the uncomfortable center of it all it can either make your creative life literally impossible to live out or give you unlimited freedom to do anything you want at the end of the day your most important priority is work it's what you need to stay alive to put food on the table and to care for your loved ones if you're struggling with money then you don't have time to play the guitar or to plan your next fishing trip and even if you do there's always this looming stressed about paying the rent paying the insurance all the bills it doesn't stop there either because Hobbies can be damn expensive when I first upgraded from my phone camera to an actual camera for recording these videos I looked up you know beginner cameras something inexpensive affordable entry level and lots of people are recommending the Sony zv E10 and when I checked the price it was like 6 700 quid and you know I was thinking that's beginner like what's next then how am I going to afford what's coming next and they know that's the case everywhere else there's always expensive gear to buy and it's going to be a burden on your wallet at the end of the day this money has to come from somewhere I'm afraid and with it comes the freedom to pursue whatever you want one thing you will need at some point on that road is a website a place where you can do business with people and showcase your work and that is where Squarespace comes in it's got everything you need to make your business idea real and not just this vague vision in your head you can greet people with a beautiful homepage and I made mine here with the fluid engine which is a drag and drop editor that let you customize every single detail on the page exactly as you envision it in your head now chances are you'll be offering a product or a service to people and Squarespace has that covered as well not only is all of the email marketing built into Squarespace but you can also embed an existing email list which is what I've done here with the CSS code and for me that was so convenient because it made the transition seamless right now I use my website to host my writing and to show off new videos but I'm excited to see what I can do with the built-in course tools to maybe create a more structured approach to learning and of course in any business data matters it's how you get feedback and steal yourself in the right direction Squarespace has a lovely analytics page and it lets you see exactly where the interaction is and maybe where you can improve upon to get started yourself go to squarespace. com and use their free trial to design your website and once you feel ready to launch it you can go to squarespace. com odesus and use code Odus to get 10% off of your first website or domain so do check that out let's also remember that the famous polymaths of the past that we look up to were often rich or at least were supported by very wealthy families Da Vinci didn't come home to paint and design after a long day of brick laying some of his greatest achievements happened with you know financial support from the mediis from Jukes from noblemen from the King and even the state sometimes it's easy to compare yourself to such figures and then feel disappointed in yourself or inadequate and that's until you remember that the conditions they achieved greatness in was so different from what we have now of course it wasn't the rule but it's true that if your basic needs are met then you are given the room to explore everything else and to flourish so what then is my advice just you know get your money up bro well that's kind of what it boils down to but obviously that's easier said than done and we need a way to do it sustainably and realistic ically I'm guessing that most of us have a standard full-time job and if the salary for that is comfortable then you can clock off at 5:00 p.
m. close a computer and then just enjoy your personal time with your family your friends and your hobbies and that in itself is great you don't have to listen to The Hustle guys who are telling you to earn more and more that's okay however if you want a little bit of extra cash to supplement your you know expensive gear you could always seek experience courses new offers anything to increase income the traditional way so that it gives you a bit more of that Breathing Room alternatively we can slide into the deep and dark world of the side hustle Drp Shipping smma e-commerce all of that [ __ ] but seriously as toxic as that side of the internet is they want the same thing as you and I they want more money and with it the freedom to pursue what they want it's just one of the reasons that I started this channel so that I could grow something in the longterm and maybe one day I have a fulfilling job that I can live off of of and something I can use to practice skills at my own pace that same opportunity is yours to take no matter what that self-doubt in your mind is Whispering to you because I used to think that something like this is a pipe dream and it's completely unrealistic but it was exactly that which was stopping it from happening in the first place so it's almost this self-defeating idea a common approach people have to this whole side hustle thing is to work on a valuable skill in their spare time and then somehow sell it to someone as a product or a service you could sell your time and experience as a personal trainer or maybe you could sell your knowledge on philosophy through a course anything that people are willing to pay for as you grow and nurture that in your spare time the idea is that one day the income it pulls in will surpass the salary of your day job and that gives you room to gradually make the shift over to doing it full-time and if you're a little bit more business-minded you can continue to grow it and eventually it gives you all of the freedom you wished for in the first place it's not easy I mean I don't agree with all the business Bros that make it seem like a self flatulation but at the same time it is a Time sacrifice in itself and it is demanding so what I would recommend is choosing something that you can be passionate for so that yes it takes time but it's also kind of a hobby in itself to build and grow this thing that matters to you obviously what I said there is a drop in the ocean so I'll do my best to link some videos and articles that have helped me really simplify that path and make progress in that regard there's one final tip I should mention with energy and in literally 20 minutes you can take yourself from being dreary and tired to being more refreshed and ready to take on a hobby just take a break when you get home and I know you might roll your eyes at such obvious advice but it has to be said nowadays hustle culture tends to punish rest and there's people out there on the internet who will imply that you're a [ __ ] for you know taking half an hour to just relax as if you're somehow doing a terrible betrayal of your values it's not like that everyone needs rest and more importantly it creates this mental separation between work and your hobby and it's this Gap in between that break is often enough to calm down your mind and get you back into the creative mood because maybe if you jump straight from work to your hobby you might just see it as more work and you can't be bothered to do it I'm not ultr productive when I come home I just sit on the floor for 20 minutes and do piss all and it works it gets me you know back into my spirits you could play some sky you could go for a walk you could just do nothing and I know some people like to have a nap because it gives them this feeling of a reset in their brain but just do remember to set alarm otherwise you'll wake up at like 3:00 a. m.
