Nikhil Kamath's Advice to Zepto Co-founder

65 percent of startups shut down because the founders fight yeah okay but they're the zepto brothers grocery egos grocery Eagles okay this is important to a lot of people who are starting companies in their 20s how do you stop yourself from getting egoistic one will be more popular than the other yeah at different times it'll change one probably will at some point by virtue of outside influences own more of the company than the other be perceived in the company in its own little bubble of hierarchy in a different order than was the preconceived notion in

different people's minds how do you deal with all this can I ask you that question yeah with nitin right yeah how did you do that so we have the added advantage of being Brothers yeah we're brothers same thing so we do completely different things yeah so all my time is spent on stock market related stuff all his time is spent on people and broking related stuff so we don't get in each other broken related so we don't get into each other's way like I do my piece and he does his peace and we just happen

to complement each other but um that works for us but that being said you know there are times when egos come into play there are times when uh misunderstandings happen luckily for us things that really helped is from the very beginning we had everything on paper yeah oh and we were very much like as brothers see this is an old Journey right like when I started trading full time I was 17 when we started working together full time we started a company called kamath Associates which is what 16 years ago now and we've been on

this journey for so long along the way we have had lawyers we've had constitutions we've had many ups and downs but the one thing we've never had is anyone outside we've not had investors they've not had uh debt we've run it like an old school shop like old school Bunya business in the fars of a modern company yeah that helped but still there will be misunderstandings and neither of us generally agree Whenever there is a misunderstanding but if it is my part of business if it's anything to do with stock markets investing trading related stuff

I take the final call if it's his part of the business anything related to product people broking all of that he takes the call makes sense yeah look I mean I think with KV and it's similar I think it just comes from like deep respect like I I truly in my bones believe that KV is much more talented in the intelligent than I am he's not here do you also voice it as many times because you fear this altercation might happen based on numbers 65 yeah look I think you're right I I used to but

today I believe it like today I tell KV that he's smarter than I am because he probably is right and I think the I know that there's the chance of us getting here you were like 18 24 months ago table in his living room I was sitting here all right don't make me sound like that okay but go on like yeah nobody but uh I'm like like I know for for a fact visually after going through it I couldn't have gone through it without KV I couldn't have done it I wanted to quit in the

early days when we were failing so we were feeling [Applause] all that is all that is like have there been nights where you have cuddled and gone to bed together so you know what okay at the end one of you guys just make a montage of all the weird questions you asked them they just cut it out below 28 so it works whatever yeah but I ask everybody I think it's healthy like endorphins get released everybody should cuddle a bit more in life can I give you guys some advice as a older brother yeah like

when things happen so abruptly in life often we don't realize that our actions of yesterday which used to be funny today can be misconstrued to be something else altogether because you've only been doing this for x amount of time but everything has changed like a King's son is prepared to be the king all his life but for people who are starting off first gen uh you might not take your action so seriously but uh Society will not be so forgiving as but I mean on that point I actually know like for all four of us

yeah like what would your advice be like all of us are doing trying to do something else like what from your Vantage Point that's like the Elder Statesman future Prime Minister of this country professional advice personal advice iron doesn't personal advice you can give us both continue sorry professional advice would be what I just said and I'm saying that more so because I've experienced it keep that one group of friends who you are you know yourself with but the Lesser said so much better than more being said outside of that and I've learned it the
