as Boeing and Airbus burn the Midnight Oil to develop their Boeing 737 Max 710 and the Airbus a 321 XLR imer is focusing on a niche that is rather unexplored in the modern commercial Aviation Niche that of the 50 seater aircraft with this program which is known as energia the Brazilian aircraft manufacturer intends to go all the way out by incorporating several Innovative and groundbreaking technologies that will position the aircraft among the most soft globally so what exactly is the new aircraft by umbrea all about and how will it change the aviation industry let's find
out to understand why imer's new aircraft is poised to disrupt the status quo that Boeing an Airbus has enjoyed for decades we need to first get a good idea of the aircraft manufacturer's Journey Through The Years and how it has morphed into a manufacturer that can threaten the market leadership that Boeing and Airbus have enjoyed for long to do that we have to travel back in time to Mid 1969 when the company was formed in order to develop the Bandai Ron aircraft on mass in the 1980s the aircraft manufacturer had matured enough so much so
that it even started getting into Partnerships with other companies for instance it teamed up with the Italian companies alenia and iraki to create its first fighter jet the AMX alongside this the company also developed the embb 312 Tucano a turbo prop designed primarily for training it was not long before umbre ventured into commercial aircraft with the EMB 120 Brazilia being its Flagship aircraft in this Niche it would go on to develop other aircraft such as the CBA 123 Vector the ERJ 145 and most recently the e-jets most recently the aircraft manufacturer has made headlines with
its launch of the Embraer KC 390 which has revolutionized military aviation in the medium-sized aircraft Niche this short history points to one thing Breer has consistently proven itself as a Trailblazer in the aviation industry repeatedly surpassing Expectations by designing groundbreaking aircraft and pushing the boundaries of what seems possible and now its most recent announcement is yet another indicator of its commitment to Excellence and innovation in November 2021 imbria unveiled energia essentially energia is a project comprising four low or zero emission aircraft Concepts and Breer revealed that the main intention driving this project was the determination
to help the industry in attaining the set objective of Net Zero carbon emissions by 2050 it went further to remove any doubts that this was just a Wishful project that might not live to see the light of day a statement from the president and chief executive of commercial Aviation reaffirmed this commitment after it confirmed that the aircraft manufacturer was aiming for a potential entry into commercial service of a concept Under the eneria Umbrella within the next decade if this statement is anything to go by it is possible that umer has already started working on at
least one of these Concepts in order to have it ready for commercial use within the next decade already imer has provided specific details of the aircraft that it is looking to launch under the energia project two of the aircraft have a capacity for nine passengers with one being a hybrid electric which will be known as the energia hybrid and another one being all electric dubbed the energia electric the lineup also contains a 19 Cedar aircraft known as energia H2 fuel cell and which will be powered by hydrogen fuel cells the final aircraft in the lineup
is known as the energia H2 gas turbine as the name suggests this aircraft will be powered by hydrogen burning turbine power plants and is expected to have a capacity of between 35 and 50 seats let us start by having a closer look at some of the common details that andrier has provided concerning the new aircraft starting with the range now it is believed that the range of these aircraft will be in the region of 600 and 900 nautical miles this means that the aircraft will be mainly suited for point-to-point flights perhaps between cities within a
country or between nearby cities between two countries for instance it could be a suitable option that airlines in the United States can use to connect major cities non-stop routes such as New York City to Chicago Dallas to Denver and Los Angeles to San Francisco fall comfortably within this range other key connections include Atlanta to Miami and Boston to Washington DC all these indicating the real potential of these aircraft craft to enhance travel efficiency across vital Metropolitan corridors another standout feature of the Embraer energia concept is its Advanced airframe design particularly the clean Wing configuration that
is free of prop wash which is a stream of air pushed back by rotating propellers this means the aircraft's wings are engineered to remain unencumbered by the turbulence typically caused by propellers you see in traditional designs prop wash tends to create extra drag which disrupts the smooth flow of air over the wings with increased drag an aircraft's fuel consumption rate spikes significantly something that is not good in terms of operational costs by eliminating prop wash and Breer will have achieved a sleeker and more aerodynamic profile that promises enhanced fuel efficiency according to Aviation experts and
analysts this design is a significant step forward in sustainable Aviation ensuring cleaner operations without compromising on capability also in a quest to convince potential customers that the new aircraft are worthy of acquiring it is expected that embri will go all the way out in incorporating latest advancements in aerodynamics structural design and systems integration this means that we might see the aircraft manufacturer utilizing Innovative materials such as carbon fiber composits known for their strength and lightweight characteristics these materials are also known to help in reducing fuel consumption which is a significant factor that Airlines look at
when making purchasing decisions additionally the aircraft manufacturer could decide to use Advanced aluminum lithium alloy for structural components these materials are known for their strength and corrosion resistance while being lighter than traditional aluminum thus guaranteeing enhanced efficiency rates the fact that Embraer launched this project to help the industry in attaining Net Zero goals means that it could also use sustainable materials such as bio-based resins in composite manufacturing these materials are known for their effectiveness and helping to reduce the environmental impact associated with aircraft emissions also it could look into the likelihood of integrating these materials
with a Advanced manufacturing techniques like 3D printing in a move that will help to optimize designs and further reduce waste during production with an increased demand for more Comfort it is expected that Embraer will also devise measures to enhance passenger Comfort during flights this could be attained through a number of ways with one of them being the use of rearm mounted propulsion systems this approach is associated with a substantial reduction in noise levels inside the cabin as it moves the primary noise sources away from the passenger seating area area also key to note is that
the focus on enhancing quietness levels with these aircraft aligns with the broader goals of sustainable and efficient design which actually circles back to the primary objective that embria had in mind when launching this project now onto the most important part of the new aircraft through a power source as previously mentioned imer plans to equip the aircraft with multiple power options with one of them being the hybrid electric Source this system works by utilizing an an architecture which combines thermal engines with small electric motors with that the aircraft is enabled to maximize efficiency by using the
electric motors for specific phases of flight that demand short power boosts such as taxiing also the hybrid system has been hailed for how it helps to reduce the need for large batteries thus minimizing the overall weight of the aircraft and improving its performance on the other hand the thermal engines come in during the critical phases of flight such as during cruising thus ensuring that the aircraft is provided with enough power to sustain every operation that ensures a safe flight Embraer could also look to integrate the propulsion system with a clean wi design in a move
that will further enhance the aircraft aerodynamics this configuration will facilitate reduced fuel consumption and Emissions further aligning with the aircraft's goal of adopting more sustainable Aviation Solutions also the Brazilian aircraft manufacturer plans to explore the potential of fuel cell propulsion systems to achieve zero carbon emissions Embraer is fully aware of the weight challenges as well as the need for advanced thermal management associated with this propulsion system as such it has proposed optimized propulsion system installations that focus on Advanced thermal management strategies for example it is working on air flow systems that can dissipate heat while
minimizing drag in addition to that embria is also exploring the use of hydrogen and dual fuel gas turbine engines these power plants will be using the liquid hydrogen stored in cryogenic tanks and more importantly will will be emitting zero carbon this makes them a crucial part of the industry's efforts to cut down on harmful emissions and attain Net Zero goals by 20150 to add Cherry onto icing embria plans to use dual fuel engines which can be operated using hydrogen for regular missions but switch to Conventional fuels like jet a or sustainable aviation fuel whenever a
need arises now an analysis of these options Point toward one thing an increased emphasis by imer to provide Airlines with options that can help them reduce operational costs while also positioning them conveniently to contribute toward a sustainable future that is free of emissions so how do these aircraft compare with those already in service well it is practically impossible to make a comparison between these aircraft and those in service from Boeing and Airbus since they are in totally different niches however One Thing Remains clear imbria has set the pace in relation to adopting engineering practices that
promote sustainability within the industry although Boeing and Airbus have also succeeded in using certain percentages of sustainable fuels in their aircraft the majority of their engines are not configured in a way that they would be 100% compatible with this kind of fuel another question that arises is what does the future hold for these aircraft to answer that question we just need to look at the future projections of the industry you see according to projections by the International Air transport Association Global air passenger numbers are expected to clock 8.7 billion people annually this means that as
time progresses more people will start using Air transport as their primary means of Transport as such Airlines will require more aircraft to Ferry people around and more importantly they will require shorter turnaround times to ensure that they can dispatch as many flights per day as possible the best aircraft to help them do that are not the bigger narrow body airliners that are in service today instead it is the smaller airliners such as those that Embraer is working on therefore it is evident that the future has never never been brighter for Embraer thanks to the energia
program however it is important to note that before Embraer starts offering these aircraft to customers it will have to meet every safety operational and structural threshold set by the Federal Aviation Administration as well as the European Union Aviation safety agency this means that it could take a few more years before it formally receives the certification required to commence commercial flights now all we have to do is wait and see how Boeing and Airbus react to this move and whether they will also decide to venture into this Niche remember to subscribe to the channel for more
