Donald Trump jokes about Canada becoming the 51st American state; Martial law has been lifted hours ...
Video Transcript:
[Music] tonight A taxing remark and another apparent joke by Donald Trump is the next president of the United States trolling Canada flagging the conversation about a 51st state the president uh was telling jokes the president was teasing us and the scramble and rare meeting to deal with a real tariff threat also the violent clashes between protesters and troops in South Korea the backlash forcing the country's leader to back down after imposing martial law we'll tell you how to protect yourself from the surge in Holiday shipping scams and it pisses me off plus facing the future
of flying no ID required but is it taking off I don't know if I'd be comfortable with it and a new career high note for a Manitoba singer can you hear me I love you giving voice to a community on the road to the gramys CTV national news with Omar saaden good evening everyone they say a picture is worth a thousand words but few know exactly what to make of Donald Trump's AI generated image on social media this evening it comes as Canada and the Inc coming US president continue to Clash on tariffs and on
the same day as a rare meeting between the Prime Minister and the opposition ctv's Michael Couture on what could be behind the puzzling post the computer generated picture shows the president-elect a top of mountain next to a Canadian flag and the caption O Canada a sign Donald Trump is trolling the Prime Minister according to this political analyst we have seen Donald Trump often times uh take great Delight great pleasure and I think having people in his mind I think bend the knee the apparent joke started at that dinner at maralago last week according to those
in the room when prime minister Justin Trudeau told Trump that 25% tariffs would quote kill the Canadian economy Trump responded with this Trump joked to him that if Canada can't survive without ripping off the US to the tune of100 billion dollars a year then maybe Canada should become the 51st state Canada's ambassador to the US says it was taken as a joke I find to be uh reassuring that you know people are that comfortable with each other that they're teasing on things that yeah I mean any good joke kind of always hits a little bit
you know a little bit of a nerve it comes a day after Mexico's president took aim at Canadian politicians who said the issues at our border are very different from the ones at the Mexican one Claudia shine bomb fired back saying they're not going to fall for a provocation of which country is better as Canada's alliances are tested the Prime Minister attempted to close Canadian ranks meeting with opposition leaders the goal is to be a united front in the face of 25% tariffs that could hurt both Canada and the US I told the Prime Minister
that of course uh at every opportunity I will make those arguments and make Canada's case on behalf of all Canadians a part of that plan is supposed to include bolstering security at our border with the US adding more agents and our CMP officers yes there's there's an increase in uniform presence that we want but there's also that that increase on people that can operate the technology that we're going to get behind closed doors the Prime Minister told opposition leaders beefing up the Border will require legislation and he'll need cooperation to get it through the house
in the hopes of avoiding those tariffs Omar all right thank you growing calls tonight for South Korea's President to resign after an astonishing series of events today he declared martial law mobilized the military then revoked the order ctv's genv bosang on the massive backlash that prompted the about face in a country that's a key Western Ally tanks withdrew from the streets after a complete reversal in South Korea president Yun Yu lifted his Declaration of Martial law just hours after issuing the decree a move that had sparked shock and fierce backlash and had reached within the
walls of the National Assembly the order banned political activity allowed for arrest without Wars it feels like we're returning to the era of dictatorship said this protester president Yun is a former prosecutor who was elected by a razor thin margin in 2022 he's since been in a political standoff against the opposition his wife embroiled in corruption allegations he made his surprise Declaration of Martial law saying it was necessary to stop quote Shameless pro- North Korea anti-state forces he aced in ways that Koreans no longer expect their president's act he AC like the presidents of Korea
in the 70s and 80s is what he's doing University of British Columbia Professor Don Baker has studied South Korea for half a century watching it he says go from dictatorship to democracy poverty to Prosperity this was the first time a president had brought in martial law since a military dictatorship ended in the late 1980s he misjudged how much Korea has changed in the last 40 years and it's a big mistake on his part I believe the opposition controls Parliament and in the middle of the night it called on politicians and protesters to head to the
National Assembly all 190 lawmakers in the room overnight voted to overturn the president's orders the chaos is politically sensitive for the US South Korea is a close Ally in the region one President Joe Biden has praised as a beacon of democracy now this turmoil has plunged the country into Political uncertainty by Dawn military vehicles had left the area surrounding the National Assembly leaving behind confusion Jean BOS CTV News a Canadian is one of three climbers missing in New Zealand after the trio plan to climb Mount Cook the country's highest peak police say the men flew
into the area on Saturday morning but did not make the flight out on Monday Rescuers found climbing gear believed to belong to the group bad weather has paused the search until at least Thursday and a Canadian man has been arrested in New Jersey in connection with a murder that took place nearly three decades ago authorities say Tammy tigner was murdered in 1997 her body left in a park just outside Newark she was last seen getting into an orange van the case remains unsolved until last year in 2023 there were advancements in DNA testing that resulted
in a profile that police were able to match to Robert creeder authorities in Winnipeg took the now 60-year-old Robert creeder into custody several months later he's now been charged with first-degree murder and is due to appear in court tomorrow there is renewed interest in the unsolved murder of six-year-old beauty queen John Benet Ramsey a Netflix docu series revisits the infamous case and the gruesome crime that took place nearly 30 years ago ctv's Joy malbin on what investigators are hoping it leads to someone killed this six-year-old child it's a cold case that haunts America still a
new Netflix do you series detailing the horrific death of six-year-old John Bonet Ramsey a child beauty pageant queen found bludgeon strangled and sexually assaulted in her own home the day after Christmas in 1996 her Father John never giving up hope given today's technology it can be solved I'm convinced of it you know we had DNA results in 1997 of an unidentified male DNA it was mixed that DNA sample was mixed with some ajin DNA that can now be separated uh technically from the get-go the Boulder Colorado Police the tabloids even Heraldo held a mock trial
on tv blaming the parents Johan and paty haraldo as apologized what is your I lament contributing to the hurt that you have endured from The Ransom note to the murder weapon and an unexplained bootprint police were criticized for mishandling the investigation DNA testing in 2008 exonerated the parents and John benet's brother Burke too late for py who had died of cancer it was a case that people couldn't stop talking about but the Netflix series just like the Mendez Brothers case has sparked new interest and they hope new leads to me it's indisputable that this was
the work of an intruder it's time to get over it Boulder and do the right thing by these people the new police chief determined it seems to do just that John Benet would have been 34 years old this year she deserved to grow up and live her life to the fullest and would love nothing more than to bring Justice to her memory police say they're still receiving tips and hope that a new team of experts and new technology will finally help cck this decades old Cold Case Omar hoping for some kind of break all right
Joy thank you a startling spike in the cases of walking pneumonia particularly in kids has Canadian doctors trying to figure out why in Ontario alone more than 700 cases compared to last year's 23 ctv's Heather Wright on how to spot the symptoms a sore throat fever and a cough that just won't go away they called from school because she was coughing so much that she actually threw up when vieta 's 10-year-old daughter first got sick they thought it was the common cold after a couple of visits to the doctor she was diagnosed with walking pneumonia
a bacterial illness surging in parts of Canada two weeks later I got sick and so did my husband in Ontario the positivity rate for walking pneumonia or micoplasma is more more than three times higher than pre-o levels I have never in my career ordered so many x-rays or had so many positive x-rays for pneumonia between January 1st and November 15th 18% of tests for the illness came back positive and even higher positivity rate was seen between August and November between 25 and 30% positivity and young people had the highest number of positive tests averaging 45%
among children aged 5 to 77 most kids have fever or cough and they might be having aches or chills or discomfort but we're not usually seeing a lot of kids getting very sick with it or needing hospitalization or ICU type care but they don't feel their best and experts say it's not yet clear what's causing the surge there's periodic outbreaks of this for example last year China had a big outbreak of it we have periodic outbreaks of it in Canada the United States we're seeing a rise in cases earlier in the year and of course
we seeing a very similar Trend here in Canada most public health agencies in Canada don't track cases of walking pneumonia so it's not clear exactly how pervasive it is in every part of the country anyone who suspects they might have it is encouraged to see their doctor who can prescribe antibiotics Heather right CV news Toronto and in other health news a brand of bagged salads sold in Ontario Quebec and Atlantic Canada is being recalled over salmonella concerns the recall includes Taylor Farms sweet kale chopped salad kits with a best before date up to December 6th
if you have it best to throw it out or return it today is giving Tuesday one of the biggest fundraising days for nonprofits but this year some Canadian Charities are noticing a drop in donations ctv's Paul Hollingsworth on the dip when Souls Harbor rescue mission receives financial assistance the money directly supports people like Jeff Harris they help a lot of people here Souls Harbor shelters 60 homeless Nova scotians and volunteers feed more than 500 people across the province every day gives me a place to shower and a place to get clean clothes and helps the
community with food Souls Harbor is now facing a cash crunch brought on by the Canada Post strike no mail means financial contributions are not arriving it would be a devastating blow at any time but especially on giving Tuesday which is supposed to be the single biggest Don day of the year we are at risk to lose a million dollars which uh is a lot and keeps so many of our programs going Brigadoon is a pediatric medical camp with 3,000 visitors each year the postal strike has stalled their direct mail Campaign which solicits donations from people
across the country we count on tens of thousands of dollars to come back through that program there are also concerns that the ongoing postal strike could have a negative impact on fundraising not just during the holiday season The Frigid post Christmas winter months are fast approaching providing shelter and food will be critical Souls Harbor CEO Michelle Porter is urging supporters to not send money by mail Walk In Their donation put it online uh give us a phone call thousands of letters and financial contributions are currently sitting at Canada Post facilities donations are not coming in
dragging down fundraising numbers for what could be a holiday season filled with uncertainty Paul Hollingsworth CTV News Hol Fox coming up over the past week I've probably received two of them uh especially through UPS how to avoid falling prey to Holiday shipping scams [Music] scammers are trying to cash in off the ongoing postal strike hoping unsuspecting holiday Shoppers will take the bait here's ctv's Adrien gobrial on how to avoid falling for the shipping scam as the Canada Post labor dispute nears its third contentious week a troubling trend is on the rise Equifax the credit reporting
Bureau is warning Canadians that since the strike began there's been a sudden spike in the a number of fraudulent shipping and parcel scam attempts fishing for victims through phone calls emails and text messages over the past week I've probably received two of them uh especially through UPS you don't have a UPS package I don't have a UPS package another example is this message sent to potential Canadian victims this week allegedly sent by a member of the Canada Post team who claims that a parcel is being detained by Canadian customs and it pisses me off and
I don't see why we can't do something about it but yeah it is frustrating especially at this time of the year this comes at a time when some Canadian consumers and businesses are already taking a financial hit the postal strike can mean additional shipping costs through private couriers the Canadian Federation of Independent Business pulled more than 3,800 Canadian companies 69% of small business owners say they want the government to introduce Back To Work legislation our small business has gone through hell and back over the Last 5 Years through Co to sessions to the economy tanking
like and now this to happen it's it's not right alaha says his local delivery startup company has seen demand for their services Spike 40% as smaller Canadian companies try and remain competitive during this turbulent time it's small business it's our economy it's everybody that relies on that partner to help them get to their customers doorsteps in the busiest time of the year as for those shipping scams Equifax tells us that this holiday season with even more Canadians desperate to get their packages the number of people reporting fraudulent activity is climbing Omar all right Adrian thank
you coming up the major difference you may notice next time you fly [Music] new tech is taking off for Air Canada passengers in Vancouver who can now board their flights simply by scanning their faces and the airline says face ID will soon expand to other airports but as CV's BC bureau chief Andrew Johnson tells us some Travelers have reservations for the weary airport traveler a simpler boarding process is an easy sell I think that that's great that's the pitch from Air Canada the first Canadian airline to roll out facial recognition technology at the gate anything
easier to make the the lines move quicker right starting today people boarding most domestic Air Canada flights at YVR are eligible to register passengers scan their passport and face into the Air Canada app at the gate physical ID is not required it would probably make it easier but I don't know if I'd be comfortable with it to be honest the airline is hoping to reass sure customers like that the system is secure facial Biometrics or other personal information provided by customers for the digital ID system is not used for any other purpose airic Canada says
your digital profile is encrypted only stored on your device and is deleted within 36 hours still the technology is sparking concern from some privacy Advocates I'll give the company credit for putting a time limit on how long they hold on to that facial image before getting rid of it but you can do a lot with data in 36 hours and that isn't the only data that they are collecting we have to do it on their app which stays on your phone that app is collecting information as well and that doesn't stop after the 36 hours
are up the digital ID is optional if you want to board the oldfashioned way I'm on school I print my boarding still Andrew Johnson CTV News Vancouver and Tech isn't just changing the way you board a plane it could also soon Revolution ize household chores meet Neo a robot designed by 1X which is based out of Norway and the United States developers say the humanoid will one day be able to do your laundry even make you a morning cup of coffee earlier this year Tesla revealed its version of a humanoid robot named Optimus but convenience

started shaking and I know I had tears coming out of my eyes and and I ran upstairs and I would just burst out laugh her vocals are featured on the album the furry by Antonio varara which is up for best contemporary Blues album going forward that's who I'm just going to focus my my um energy on is to collaborate with other other uh Grammy nominees and Grammy winners this past weekend head performed at Carnegie Hall in New York and was accompanied by four young singers from the arts for m to Toba indigenous youth choir it's
lifechanging and magical when you're on the stage and you uh hear the Acoustics Avery Peltier was one of those four singers he hopes his debut concert at Carnegie Hall is just the first of many shows around the world I would love to grow up and do that what Ronda has done show people and bring people in and make a choir and stuff and uh I just feel like that's a dream that I would want to accomplish head feels she is breaking barriers for the next generation of young indigenous artists like I always used to say
when I'd go and sing at Carnegie Hall that I was the only pepper corn and a sea of salt on Sunday there was five pepper corn on a SEF Sal it would be wonderful to see more of us on on on the stage head says she hopes to continue to inspire young artists who want to follow in her footsteps and now she will be heading to Los Angeles in February for the award show Alex carpa CTV News Winnipeg great achievement and we'll keep our fingers crossed that's a snapshot of this Tuesday for all of us
