Sometimes you're there working your ass off, you're doing a lot of overtime, you're working weekends and you're not even appreciated for it. So in today's video I'm going to give you seven infallible tips on how to get promoted at work. Stick around until the end because I'm sure all these tips will help you a lot.
The first infallible tip on our list is this: don't ask for the promotion, earn it. And why do I say that? Well, have you ever asked someone for something and they didn't give it to you and you didn't get it?
I suppose so, but why don't you win something you ask for? Probably because the person doesn't want to give it to you. And why don't they want to give it to you?
Because the exchange might not make that much sense to them. You know when you're a child and you really want to eat, I don't know, a chocolate, but then your mother tells you that it won't work if you don't eat a proper lunch first? The idea here is the same.
If you don't eat your meal properly first, you don't deserve it. If you had a son, for example, and he asked for a bike as a Christmas present, but if he hadn't behaved all year and hadn't got good grades at school, would it make any sense for him to get the bike? Did he really deserve it?
Probably not. But if you give him the present even though he doesn't deserve it, is that the best thing for him? Is that the best way to educate someone?
Because this is the first mistake that many people who want to be promoted make. You don't just ask for a promotion before you deserve it. And if someone gives you a promotion, even if you don't deserve it, it certainly won't be the best thing for your life.
At least not in the long term. So how do I earn it? Simple.
There are three things you can do. First of all, don't work by the hour. Why not?
Because business owners don't think like that. If you want to get promoted, you need to think more like them. You need to be aligned.
You need to show them that when you want to be promoted, imagine that you're here and the business owner is here. If you want to be promoted, you're going to get closer to him and you need to think more like him. So you need to stop thinking in terms of hours and start thinking in terms of results.
Secondly, get off the production line. Because when we talk about business and getting promoted, the only thing that really counts is the result. It doesn't matter if you work nine or ten hours a day.
If you, I don't know, manage to get everything done in two hours and you have a great result, that's great. Play the result game, not the effort game. Thirdly, you have to know the right time to exercise soft power and hard power.
Soft power is when you can convince through diplomacy and conversation. And hard power is when diplomacy doesn't work and you need to be a little firmer in a decision. Some call soft power politicking.
And you need to know how to use that very well. So these three things will help you deserve a raise. The second tip is this: understand whether you're at work or at work.
When I say that work is so important to me, many people disagree, it's because they confuse what work is and they confuse what office hours are and what service is. Service, or expedient, is usually when you want to go after something because you have a benefit. and it's usually something you don't have yet.
So you're going to have a lot of friction here in order to grow. Why will you have a lot of friction in order to grow? Because there is an alternative where you go after a job and the job multiplies what you already have.
What's easier? Multiplying what you already have or going after something you don't have? When you work, you can grow with much less friction, with much less effort you can exercise a little more of your vocation and talent.
So the second tip for getting promoted is to find your vocation, because you'll do the things that others do with less effort and you'll get more results and you'll even enjoy what you do. So this will greatly increase your chances. So look for a job, not a job.
Tip number three on our list has to do with the person who only complains about their job. There's always someone who only complains about their job. You go to get a coffee and they complain that the coffee isn't good, how crazy is that?
She gets an earful, goes off and complains like hell. Then you give her another task to do and she complains again. What's worse, she starts badmouthing the team behind their backs.
Man, it sucks working with people like that, doesn't it? Let me know in the comments, by the way, if you know anyone like that, because it's very difficult for me not to have someone like that in your company. And cousin, you need to take this into your life.
So never be that person who only complains and doesn't do anything to improve your life. This isn't going to help you grow. So our fourth tip is this: fill in the gaps.
Most companies have two types of professionals. There's the professional who does everything that's allowed and there's the professional who likes what's forbidden. So what does the person who does everything that's allowed, everything right, do?
Well, the person arrives on time, the person is never absent, the person completes the tasks correctly. But they live in their comfort zone. So this person hardly ever makes a mistake, but he never proposes anything new either.
This guy probably won't get promoted, not in a meritocratic company, because he's just doing what's agreed. He doesn't do his extra bit, which would be the difference. There's also the guy who does everything that's forbidden.
This is the person who is given a task. The boss asks him to do it this way and he does it another way. They ask him to make a presentation in Excel and he does it in Word.
They ask him to solve the problem with HR and he talks to finance. This guy forgets everything he's supposed to do. He probably won't get promoted, because he can't even do the basics well.
So do you know who ends up growing in this story? It's neither one nor the other, it's the third professional. It's the professional in the middle, who does what's optional.
Because they do what's asked of them and they also do what's not asked of them. It's that coworker of yours who arrives on time every day, does all the tasks and everything, but has one foot in the forbidden zone. So he does his Always On, he can do the optional too.
So he's adding even more to the company. And every company has some free zone that can be exploited, because whenever a responsibility is abdicated, an opportunity is created. The professional who does the optional work occupies these empty spaces and has much more chance of exposing their personal brand.
And the more you expose your brand, the more chance you have of being promoted. So, for example, I was a waiter at Outback, I worked my ass off, sometimes closing the restaurant until three in the morning, but I also did the elective. I studied until I was ready to pass a finance certification exam.
So this guaranteed me a job and it made me grow. It's true that in my case I grew up elsewhere, but that would be the logic. It's like you're in a company doing what's asked of you, but at the same time you're studying a new skill to apply in the company.
So you've agreed a salary and you've agreed a deliverable. The moment you start delivering more, your salary tends to increase at some point if the company obviously values the professional. The fifth item on our list of foolproof tips is to have a beautiful dashboard.
Look, it's crazy, but there's no point in doing all the things I'm showing you if you can't clearly communicate your results to your boss. You need to show why you should be promoted. We're under the illusion that once we've earned it, someone will come along and tell us that you've been promoted, but you haven't.
You need to show more. Because imagine, the person who chooses whether or not you're going to be promoted is someone who has a lot of responsibilities. So they have a lot on their mind.
Sometimes you're not the person's priority, so you need to show them more, but of course with arguments and grounds. So sometimes I see people who say, ah, but I've had a lot of results, I've worked really hard, I've hit all my targets in the company and everything. Okay, but where is all this?
You haven't shown it. It's no use talking about it, you have to show it. And if you want to be a bit more professional, you can also show your superiors a dashboard with your team's OKRs and KPIs.
We do that here in the office. OKRs are Objectives and Key Results and KPIs are Key Performance Indicators. They are basically your objectives and the way of measuring what you have done to achieve them.
If you show your OKRs and KPIs on a dashboard with all your goals and results, this is a game changer, because people will look at it differently, they'll be used to seeing it. Sixth tip: no gossip. Here I'll break it down into two very simple things.
When I say no gossip, I mean that you need to know how to speak in one minute, because it would take people ten minutes to speak. Every Tuesday I hold a meeting here at the office with various businesspeople and I always make room for questions. But you know what I see most?
People don't know how to ask questions. A lot of people get bogged down and take ten minutes to ask a question that could be asked in a minute. This happens a lot in WhatsApp audio, for example.
The person who starts recording the audio, you know? They don't even know what they're going to say and end up sending you a podcast that could have been said in ten seconds. Do you know anyone like that in your company?
I know quite a few. And man, they don't like the sound of red currants. It needs to be straightforward, to the point or at least better prepared before you start talking.
The other point here is that when a company starts to grow, it becomes increasingly difficult to control that corridor gossip. My goodness, how does that happen? Everyone has had a gossipy coworker who goes on and on about a lot of things.
Dude, did you see what happened to Thiago at work? Did you see that the company is going to do that thing? Did you see that thing?
It's always small talk, man. But think about it, the more you grow, the more information you have access to. So, if you're promoted, you'll find out things that not everyone knows.
Do you really think a gossip is going to get promoted when he has even more information? Of course not. That person will never be promoted if they continue to gossip in the corridor.
Forget it! So, if you want to get promoted, no rudeness and no gossip. Our last tip is this: drop anchor.
What is anchoring? Playing the anchor is adding value. How do I add value?
By over-delivering or delivering ahead of schedule. Never too little or after the deadline. So has anyone ever asked you, for example, how long you've managed to deliver a project in and then, wanting to surprise you, you say you'll deliver it in a week?
Then you stop to think about it and realize what a screw-up you've made, because you're going to have to kill yourself to deliver it in a week. That person won't even be surprised. Now, if you've promised that you'll deliver in two weeks and you make the same effort to deliver in one week, then they'll be surprised.
So that's the concept of throwing the anchor. You need to throw it in front of what you're going to deliver and if you deliver ahead of schedule, people will understand that you're doing well, you're adding value. But if you deliver later than planned, your superiors won't like it.
So drop anchor and go be happy, cousin. Those were my seven tips, but before I finish the video I'm going to give you one last tip, which is a bonus tip that has two teachings behind it. The first is to always deliver more than you bargained for.
I said I was going to give you seven tips, but I gave you eight. And the lesson is that if you follow everything I've said and it still doesn't work, you're completely stagnant, change your environment. Because either you change the environment or you change your environment.
There's no point in getting stuck in a company with no meritocracy and which doesn't recognize your results. So, to sum up everything I've said so far. Firstly, don't ask for promotion, deserve promotion and to deserve promotion you'll have to have results and not hours worked, get off the production line and know the right time to use soft power and hard power.
Secondly, understand whether you're at work or at your job. At work it will be much easier to grow. No room for mimimi, mimimi is accommodation.
Never be that person who only complains and does nothing to improve your life. Fill in the gaps, don't be the professional who does everything that's asked of them or everything that's allowed. Whether you're in the middle or optional, you're the one who has the chance to expose your personal brand.
Have a good-looking dashboard, so there's no point in following all the tips if you can't clearly communicate your results to your boss. So have a dashboard with your team's goals and results. This gives you much more visibility than you should be promoted for.
No gossip, so be as direct as possible. Don't be rude when you talk to your superiors and never gossip in the corridor. Gossip has no chance of growing.
Seventhly, play the anchor. You add value by delivering more or before the deadline. Never too little or after the deadline.
And the bonus: change the environment. The idea here is always to deliver more than agreed. If you follow everything I've said and still don't receive recognition, don't waste time and change your environment.
So that's it cousins, those were my seven tips on how to get promoted at work. Let me know in the comments which one you liked best. If there were any that I didn't mention and if there were any that you think don't make sense.
Big hug, see you in the next video and bye!
