[Music] welcome back today's video deals with the Ruger number one and on the table I have Ruger number three and the Ruger number one and when I introduced it as the number one it's because essentially as you can see the Ruger number three has the same receiver and other features as the number one except the operating lever has more of a Western look to it it has the straight grip stock and the barrel configuration is is slightly different actually if you're familiar with the Ruger 44 it has the barrel bent at the end and sorry
barrel bent front sight and the barrel banned on the on the four end and I probably should make a couple of remarks before going into the technical details of the rifle it's it's it's one of these rifles I'm quite surprised they're still being made it's a it's it's a rifle that is probably best described as pure and simple and straight and true as the as the saying goes and the reason this is clicking as I have the fore-end loosened if you ever get sick of choosing bolt actions and you don't know whether to buy a
Ruger bolt-action or or a Remington or some other bolt-action just buy a Ruger number one maybe you need more shots I don't know I generally find that's not the case but I suppose there are there are parts of the country where you know there are running shots a game and it never hurts to have a second shot on the other hand like I said if you really want to capture the essence of hunting a Ruger number one is a fantastic choice and you never have to speculate do you have the right rifle or is it
good enough this is an entirely classic single-shot rifle and no one can ever say anything really about single-shot they just embody everything that makes hunting great and extremely accurate now I'll take off this forehand and I'll just show you the mechanism so we have a falling block so the block Falls you're familiar with that and cartridge is inserted you raise the block it's entirely solid this this action I would say will never fail the hammer is visible here that's the bottom of the hammer so when you pull the trigger it flies at an arc forward
and unlike some falling block rifles this action is activated by a spring in here and the ejector is here on this side so everything is in the fore end and the block some people don't believe me and they own Ruger number ones the block is not symmetrical it's asymmetrical and and these surfaces are what keep the action closed so I remember years ago somebody was talking to me about the relative strength of actions and if you measure the bearing surface of this area and this area this is far greater than the bearing surface of even
a multi lug bolt there's there's just no way that this block is going anywhere it's a it's a tremendous action and about the only thing that some people don't like is that it's one shot now because the action is so compact the barrel can be longer and the overall length of the rifle is the same so oh this one is 7 62 by 39 but believe it or not that that was a special run I think but anyway I got wants somehow and the to this number three is in 223 I like the 765 39
jessica's ammo is cheap I mean not that I'm running around looking for cheap ammunition but it never helps to try to save money and the 223 is lovely in the number-three these sadly aren't being made anymore and I lost track of my communications with Ruger asking them to reintroduce the number three because I think they'd be surprised how many of itself and the number three was available for in 44 Magnum 223 forty five seventy I think thirty forty Craig I'm sure you can correct me if I'm wrong the butt plate kind of looks like the
butt plate from the 44 carbine maybe even the mini 14 I mean they're not the same but it's the same idea I like the operating lever a lot on the number three and everything else about about the number three is the same as the number one then some people do fun things moving this four end on to the number three and some people have changed stocks around just to sort of personalize things and that's totally fine and then this comes down quite easily and that's the four end and then you can see that they that
they're identical mechanisms obviously the number one has this wonderful quarter rip and that accommodates the Ruger dovetail rings which I like I've heard some people say things about them that weren't entirely flattering but I've never had a problem with them and I think if they were not the best they they would have changed them by now some people talk about how many screws and fasteners and so on for the quarter rip and maybe there are a lot of screws I don't know but they're there and they work and then you've got a folding rear sight
which is quite simple and some people upgrade these with all kinds of different aftermarket products I never found anything wrong with the rifle just as it is I think it's I think it's a near-perfect firearm and like I said if you get fed up and you just decide I'm going to buy one rifle you get it the rule number one it just / it handles just perfectly I can't tell you how good this rifle feels and because the action is so short the barrel isn't starting out here it's it's back here balance is perfect I
mean if you want you can get fancier wood but who needs fancier wood when it's this good no cheek piece but doesn't matter all-together an ideal rifle and you get one of these like I said 3d out 60 to 70 308 and maybe they're going to discontinue them I keep hearing that rumor that would be a bad thing maybe buy one before that happens I took this out this is just that hoggin single shot that some people are obsessed with you can see it's a it's a different level of craftsmanship but oh the reason I
put it on the table is this thing is like 14 grand and the number one is like 1500 bucks or less depending I I think that this is a fantastic Buy and the lever is held in place by this little device here on the number three there is no fastener it's just held by spring pressure there's a little dead top there that accomplishes retention of the leader in here typical actually I think bill Ruger wanted to copy the English falling blocks in fact I know he did because I read that several times and maybe even
an interview with Bill Ruger it's got a pistol grip cap rubber butt plate and that but it all together this won't sound exceptional because these are all the typical components of a rifle but the way it all comes together on the number one comprises one of the best rifles ever made in the United States or anywhere and I should mention that in my travels I think it was in Germany and for a while Heim was taking these Ruger number ones and installing a european-style stock and engraving them and they called them hi Robert Ruger's but
it gives you an idea because I think Germany is capable of making anything and they still use the the Ruger as the basis for their rifle and there are a lot of custom guns based on the number one so oh and the check ring this looked like machine cut check ring but for many years Ruger was hand cutting and it could be hand cut and love I couldn't tell me apart and then a typical safety nothing special there trigger is fine but you know I I work I can work with just about any trigger but
I haven't I mean it's I don't think it's a target figure but it's it's it's definitely a good trigger and again the action is so simple so few moving parts it'll it'll last virtually forever an exceptional firearm and the Ruger number three maybe check guns American other place so no they must still be around but I looked just before filming it there aren't that many around anyway that is that is all I have to say about the Ruger II number one and I look forward to your comments and suggestions thank you very much for being
with me today
