should we follow design Trends do they actually help us as graphic designers I'm going to talk a bit more about that towards the end of the video so stick around to learn whether we should use trends at all in 2024 we saw the rise of generative AI in our design softwares we've seen an increase in demand for stock photography through generative Ai and we've seen how retro design workers flooded the design Community with a passion seriously every time I check Instagram all I see is nothing but retro nostalgic Vibes now if you watched my 2024
design Trends video last year's you'd already know that this would have been a huge Trend so make sure you watch this whole video to get a glimpse of 2025 2025 is going to arguably be even stranger for graphic designers so in this video I'm going to show you my Trend prediction for design and creative work in 2025 okay my first Trend prediction utilitarian design according to google utilitarian design is defined as a design philosophy that prioritizes function and practicality over Aesthetics the term utilitarian comes from the Latin word utilus which means usefulness or profitable in
23 and 2024 there was an increase in minimal utilitarian design throughout the whole design space this is a philosophy rather than an actual design style and it was derived from brutalism meaning raw Concrete in French now the idea of utilitarian design is function over form the main priority for this philosophy is to be raw and to be honest with an emphasis on accessible design we've seen Brands like H Apple Ika and Northface take this design style and run with it for a while this year we're seeing more UI layouts and branding taking on this anti-design
anti-brand approach which makes a lot of sense we live in a world where many brands are adding to the designs to stand out rather than standing out from their competitors by stripping down their design language to a visually pleasing and simple aesthetic 2025 prediction number two animated everything there's been a huge upsurge over the last few years in animating traditionally stationary graphic design work we're seeing more animated posters more animated branding assets and Logo designs than ever before so my prediction for 2025 is that we'll see a huge upsurge in animated design we're all used
to creating a poster or a logo however because of social media designers are using motion to make the work even more engaging and this is definitely down to traditional designers using more advanced softwares and Technologies maybe another reason for this increase is for enhanced storytelling animation and Motion Graphics allows for more immersive storytelling by adding narrative layers to otherwise static designs for example an animated infographic can guide viewers step by step through data in a way that's more engaging and digestable the impact of this is more effective communication this video is sponsored by skillshare the

anytime soon in fact as predicted from last year and the year before it is becoming increasingly more prominent in the design space over the last year we've seen nearly every creative platform and every company utilizing AI to speed up their workflows and offer more problem solving features in fact the biggest updates to Adobe design software has been the implementation of generative AI so you can now use text Vector in Adobe Illustrator and you can generate whole images in Photoshop whilst last year we saw that most professional designers would use AI as a way of speeding
up mundane tasks and workflows maybe for selecting objects or removing your X from an old photograph we're now seeing the start of major companies using AI to create insanely cool imagery and improve their product design seriously look look at this Nike stuff it's insane and stock photography is allbe it being replaced by generative Ai and designers are happier using AI to generate images to suit their specific needs over having to pay for stock website subscriptions I don't think anyone really knows what's going to happen with the AI or what the impact on graphic designers and
creative Professionals in the long term will be but I have a strong belief that generative AI specifically will largely be used as a tool to Aid graphic designers and creative professionals so we don't have to do the mundane and repetitive tasks that no one really wants to do and that no one finds creative Trend prediction number four handcrafted imperfect design with consumers now more conscious than ever about our environment and the impact of Corporations on it companies are switching to an image of sustainability as a result we're seeing a rising handdrawn handcrafted design but why
does this present an image of being sustainable well naturally the world is full of imperfections it doesn't conform to any kind of known structure you won't see a forest present itself as a Bento Grid or Valley form with perfect Symmetry and yet both are still beautiful despite their imperfections it is authentic and grounded which is something Brands want customers to associate with their own brand and products but there's even more to it than that younger Generations in particular are gravitating towards these imperfections over the past decade design has been dominated by polished Ultra Clean layouts
logos and typography and while these are often beautiful and functional they can also feel sterile bluring together into a sea of sameness handcrafted design stands out it feels human raw distinctive offering an antidote to the overly perfect Digital World we've grown used to Trend prediction number five nostalgic design influence is what I'm calling it loads of other people have tried to give some crazy name to this trend prediction I'm just going to keep it simple with nostalgic design over the last few years we've seen more designers leverage nostalgia in their work and here's why number
one emotional connection and comfort Nostalgia evokes positive emotions by reminding people of a simpler happier time for Millennials and gen Z the '90s and the early 2000s represent their childhood or early formative years these visuals trigger a sense of comfort and familiarity in an uncertain fast-paced crazy world that we live in Brands l leveraging this emotional connection can create deeper bonds With Their audience now Pepsi back in 2023 rebranded and they featured bold retro and spy typography they basically went back to the old branding CU it feels good to go back the second reason is
a reaction against minimalism over the past decade design has been dominated by Clean minimalist Styles whilst functional this approach can feel cold sterile and repetitive this can drive people away from a brand that shows no personality in their work the return to bold colorful and imperfect '90s to 2000s Aesthetics offers a really refreshing contrast designers and Brands can break free from sameness whilst capturing attention reasons number three genz just love retro culture so jenzy who didn't fully experience the '90s or the 2000s sorry guys it was a cool time they romanticized this era as kind
of retro cool social media platforms like Tik Tok have fueled this by popularizing the Y 2K movement within fashion music and visuals Brands adopting this nostalgic aesthetic appeal to this younger audience who value authenticity and playfulness over Perfection a big question for many designers is whether to follow design Trends or just leave them be as designers have a complicated relationship with these Trends on one hand design Trends look great on social media but on the other hand they don't particularly work in the real world of clients for me I don't particularly stick with Trends and
here's why Trends limit the creativity within us it actually puts a box around it sometimes this box can be helpful especially if a client or a brand campaign is looking for a specific style and they want to go I don't know Y2K trendy that gives us a really nice restriction of where we're supposed to go but on the other hand if we're working for a client and we're creating a logo that's inspired by the Y 2K movement then that logo is not going to last because Trends come and go they're not particularly timeless in any
way and lastly Trends overused it's all I see now is these really trendy pieces of work and don't get me wrong I love them they are really cool I like them a lot but it's all we see we don't see anyone breaking the mold from them so does it impact our Legacy as designers Trends have fun at the time they're popular But ultimately it's the original Trend Setter that is remembered it may be safer to follow Trends but perhaps it's better to be the designer that makes an impact now this design trend video was a
bit more in depth this year with less Trends if you actually enjoyed watching this and you haven't done so already cuz I know a lot of you according to my analytics haven't even subscribed please press that subscribe button it's free it makes us feel good and it also has an impact on our growth as a channel if you found anything useful in this video share it with your mates also leave me a comment down below to let me know the trends that you're predicting for 2025 and whether you think my predictions are right or wrong
