[Music] the spirit of the Lord is upon me because he has anointed me to preach the gospel to the poor he has sent me to heal the brokenhearted to Proclaim Liberty to the captives and recovery of sight to the blind to set at Liberty those who are oppressed to proclaim the acceptable year of the Lord [Music] let's start from the beginning if someone were to ask you what is the gospel how would you answer the term gospel is widely used yet its meaning varies among people often clouded by misconceptions one person explained it this way
the astonishing thing about the gospel is both its unique simplicity and its extreme profundity do you know what the gospel is that's why I believe it's probably a good idea to stick to the end of this presentation let us Define the word gospel first the word gospel comes from the Greek word euangelion EU which means good we have this EU on words like eulogy which means good words that are said at a funeral we also have words like euphemism Euphoria Eugenics and the list goes on and on and we have angelan which comes from the
word Angelos which means angel or messenger and when we put the word together we have the word euangelion which means good news or a good message in the Old Testament the word from God or a message whether good or bad would come to the people either by an Angel a prophet a king or a priest Isaiah 52:7 how beautiful upon the mountains are the feet of him who brings good news who proclaims peace who brings Glad Tidings of good things who proclaims salvation who says to Zion your god reigns how beat in the New Testament
something changed Hebrews 1:1 God who at various times and in various ways spoke in time past to the fathers by the prophets has in these last days spoken to us by his son whom he has appointed heir of all things through whom also he made the worlds we are speaking about a message that originated that is authored and owned by God there are three fundamental ways in which the word gospel is used the first Common context in which we use the word gospel refers to the genre of literature known as the gospels which collectively depict
the Life Death burial and resurrection of Jesus Christ though they all agree in that sense each gospel writer emphasizes distinct aspects of Jesus life Matthew wrote primarily for a Jewish audience emphasizing Jesus Messianic genealogy and his lineage from the tribe of Judah in contrast Mark's gospel targets Roman Believers especially Gentiles and is notably the shortest gospel Mark's style is characterized by brevity and frequent use of the term immediately although Mark also known as John Mark was not an eyewitness tradition suggests he derived his gospel account from the Apostle Peter his spiritual Mentor in [Music] Christ
Luke the only Gentile among the gospel writers dedicated his gospel to most excellent theophilos possibly a Roman dignitary his approach to recounting Jesus life is historical and meticulously chronological including details often omitted by other gospel authors Luke emphasizes jesus' compassion for societal outcasts such as Gentiles Samaritans women children tax collectors and sinners within Israel like John Mark Luke was not an eyewitness to Jesus ministry he compiled his account from sources including Peter and Mary the mother of Jesus it is important to note that the book of Acts is just a continuation of the Book of
Luke but before we get to the book of Acts we have the Gospel of John which makes us look at the life of Jesus from a theological perspective John who identifies himself as the disciple whom Jesus loved focuses on seven major miracles of Jesus and frequently uses keywords like belief witness comforter Life Death light Darkness I am and love his gospel takes us back to the beginning of the world revealing that the same Jesus who became flesh Among Us is also the creator of the world the second aspect of the term gospel pertains to a
coming Kingdom a theme that we see early in the gospel books Matthew 3: 1:3 reads in those days came John the Baptist preaching in the wilderness of Judea and saying repent ye for the Kingdom of Heaven is at hand for this is he that was spoken of by the prophet Isiah saying the voice of one crying in the wilderness prepare ye the way of the Lord make his path straight in this sense the word gospel is used to refer to an announcement or a proclamation about the Advent of the kingdom of God not a future
one but an imminent Kingdom John gives a prophetic call to repent and baptizes people a ritual cleansing ceremony that was not common for the Jews in the Old Testament the Jews restricted the cleansing ritual to Gentiles or prosites who they deemed ceremonially unclean they had to be washed if they wanted to worship with the Jews the baptism that John was giving to the people symbolized the Advent of a kingdom that was radically new and transformative for those who encountered it what did John preach Matthew 3: 10-12 and now also the axe is laid unto the
root of the trees therefore every tree which bringeth not forth good fruit is heun down and cast into the fire I indeed baptize you with water unto repentance but he that cometh after me is mightier than I whose shoes I am not worthy to Bear he shall baptize you with the Holy Ghost and with fire whose fan is in his hand and he will thoroughly Purge his floor and gather his wheat into the Garner but he will burn up the chaff with unquenchable fire the concept of the kingdom of God was not a new testament
idea the kingdom of God in away has always been Psalm 45:6 says your throne oh God is forever and ever a scepter of righteousness is the scepter of your kingdom the Jews were simultaneously searching for the future Kingdom or the restoration of the ancient Kingdom of Israel however this was not about the Earthly but a Heavenly Kingdom just like John Jesus starts his ministry preaching about the kingdom of God Mark 1: 14- 15 now after John was put in prison Jesus came to Galilee preaching the gospel of the kingdom of God and saying the time
is fulfilled and the kingdom of God is at hand repent and believe in the gospel Luke 1720 and 21 now when he was asked by the Pharisees when the kingdom of God would come he answered them and said the kingdom of God does not come with observation nor will they say see here or see there for indeed the kingdom of God is within you Nicodemus a Pharisee must have been impacted by Jesus's words and his deeds John 3: 1:5 now there was a man of the Pharisees named Nicodemus a ruler of of the Jews this
man came to Jesus by night and said to him Rabbi we know that you are a teacher come from God for no one can do these signs that you do unless God is with him Jesus answered him truly truly I say to you unless one is born again he cannot see the kingdom of God Nicodemus said to him how can a man be born when he is old can he enter a second time into his mother's womb and be born Jesus answered truly truly I say to you unless one is born of water and the
spirit he cannot enter the kingdom of God even some of the disciples struggled to understand the concept of the kingdom of God which explains Matthew's use of the term the Kingdom of Heaven for his predominantly Jewish audience they could not make a distinction between the Heavenly Kingdom Jesus spoke of and the Earthly Kingdom of Israel look at acts 1:6 therefore when they had come together they asked him saying Lord will you at this time restore the kingdom to Israel Jesus did not get frustrated watch how Jesus replied and he said to them it is not
for you to know times or Seasons which the father has put in his own authority but you shall receive power when the Holy Spirit has come upon you and you shall be witnesses to me in Jerusalem and in all Judea and Samaria and to the end of the Earth no doubt there will be a future Earthly kingdom of God as prophesied in Daniel and Revelation so what kingdom was Jesus referring to in the gospels Romans 14:17 for the kingdom of God is not eating and drinking but righteousness and peace and joy in the Holy Spirit
no doubt Paul is addressing the law and dietary issues in Romans 14 but pay attention to the second part which tells us that the kingdom of God is righteousness peace and joy in the Holy Ghost this Kingdom which Jesus spoke about has indeed come but in a spiritual sense and is within us right now God is leading and guiding his church in the form of the Holy Spirit whilst we are still talking about the Apostle Paul's teachings we encounter the third aspect of the Gospel in Matthew it's known as the gospel of the Kingdom of
Heaven while other writers refer to it as the gospel of the Kingdom by the time we reach the Epistles it is simply recog recognized as the Gospel of Jesus Christ Romans 1: 1 2 says Paul a servant of Jesus Christ called to be an apostle separated unto the gospel of God which he had promised a By His prophets in the Holy scriptures in the first verse Paul acknowledges this is a message that originated is authored and owned by God in other words this gospel is sacred and it cannot be tampered with Galatians 189 but though
we or an angel from heaven preach any other gospel unto you than that which we have preached unto you let him be accursed as we said before so say I now again if any man preach any other gospel unto you than that ye have received let him be a cursed in the second verse of Romans 1 he emphasizes that it shares a fundamental characteristic with God himself it is eternal even Abraham heard the gospel Galatians 3:8 and the scripture foreseeing that God would justify the Gentiles by faith preach the gospel to Abraham beforehand saying in
you all the nations shall be blessed all nations are blessed or can be blessed through the Royal Seed of Abraham Jesus Christ this Everlasting gospel will be proclaimed before the seven final judgments according to Revelation 14:6 and I saw another angel fly in the midst of Heaven having the Everlasting gospel to preach unto them that dwell on the earth and to every nation and Kindred and tongue and people 1 John 1: 1:3 that which was from the beginning which we have heard which we have seen with our eyes which we have looked upon and our
hands have handled of the word of life the life was manifested and we have seen and bear witness and declare to you that eternal life which was with the father and was manifested to us that which we have seen and heard we declare to you that you also may have fellowship with us and truly are Fellowship is with the father and with his son Jesus Christ what is John referring to First John 1 verse 5 now this is the gospel message we have heard from him and announced to you God is light and in him
there is no Darkness at all the good news is by repenting and believing in the life and the finished work of Christ our sins are forgiven and forgotten and we have the right to enter and live eternally in the kingdom of God not based on our righteousness but the righteousness of God and the singer said nothing you can do could make him love you more and nothing that you've done could make him close the door because of his great love he gave his only son everything was done so you would come come to the father
though your gift is small broken hearts broken lives he will take them all the power of the word the power of his blood everything was done so you would come Romans 8: 1 to four there is therefore now no condemnation to them which are in Christ Jesus who walk not after the flesh but after the spirit for the law of the spirit of life in Christ Jesus hath made me free from the law of sin and death for what the law could not do and that it was weak through the flesh God sending his own
son in the likeness of sinful flesh and for sin condemned sin in the flesh that the righteousness of the law might be fulfilled in us who walk not after the flesh but after the Spirit Romans 1:6 to1 17 I am not ashamed of the gospel of Christ for it is the power of God to Salvation for everyone who believes for the Jew first and also for the Greek for in it the righteousness of God is revealed from Faith to Faith as it is written the just shall live by [Music] faith thanks for tuning in if
