if you had to whittle down your selection to only ever having five fountain pens which five would they be I'm gonna go through my five today and also the process I broke it into five categories and I picked one pen for each of those categories so I'll show you which ones I've picked and it's also something you can play along with as well which would you fill in all five of those categories left to hear from you in the comments let's go through this with the first category of pen I think we got to be
practical and that would be a nice everyday carry now for me this was a fairly easy choice you see this one here that's the Lamy 2000 now I've already done a two-part Mega in depth review so if you want to you see me go off on this pin feel free to check out those videos but there's just a lot of great things about the pen uh you know it's got a great clip The Styling at least for me I find is really great it has probably the best slip cap that thing is so good you
can't over cap it you can push as hard as you want but it comes out just perfect just there's so much thought that goes into this I just appreciate it every single time but then just above that it works phenomenally this pen it never dries out for a slip cap this the only time this pin hasn't written is because I was out of ink and that's because maybe I didn't pay attention to the ink window so it's got an ink window in there as well piston filler which is all cool how that piston appears out
of nowhere just all sorts of great things I really like how this pan works it's super reliable very portable I can do a quick note without the pen posted but if I want to go longer I just post the pan and no problem and just every component of this pen works wonderfully now I've just recently reground this pen because I got it with an extra fine nib and I was not happy with the extra file it was not the extra fine I wanted so I had some fun and then I switched this to an extra
fine curse of italic again you can see the video of me doing that because very very small fine point nib there let's get you in close there we go so you can see it's the tiniest of stubs probably that are out there but this has drastically changed how the pen performs for me and now I have this pen with me all the time and it's the everyday carry Everyday Writer that I love and was always wanting another great thing about this pen for an everyday carry you want it to be easy to clean and Service
as well as you can see it's full of ink so I'm not going to fully disassemble the pen but yeah you just unscrew this now you do have to be aware keep this little tab when it pops out like you know don't have it go down the drain so you gotta pay attention what you're doing it comes apart very easy as far as maintenance you can just get a little Q-tip or toothpick in there with some silicone grease to grease up that piston and if you really need to you can disassemble the Piston you can
see my video how to do that I wouldn't recommend doing that very often like I you really don't need to the only times I've done this is to show how to do it on a video if you need to but other than that I don't do that piston but you can if you really need to and you don't even need any tools so there's just so many great things going for it let's uh let's give you a little writing sample and then move on to the next category and the next pin so great everyday carry
that is decided I'm going to store the pens here one by one in this pen case the next category is a little bit more portable we're talking pocket pins now I have several pocket pins these were the three that I really this this actually took me I think the longest to the side of the five categories is which pocket pen it's so tough this shown design in the Autumn this thing is like the most sealed pen I have you can eye dropper it and use a cartridge as well it's nice and light it's made of
ultim you can even clean this with isopropyl alcohol it's very durable it's lightweight you can drop it too and it's pretty darn strong it's just beautiful like this pen is the most sealed pen I have it's absolutely fantastic the enso pocket Puma I love it and this is titanium which I love and the thing I love about titanium you can have fun with colors and anodize it so I've anodized this I've actually anodized it a few times this is where I'm leaving it for now but if I want to change up the color scheme I
could just etch this off and anodize it again and have a whole new pen I just love the look of it I love the feel of it titanium is actually kind of my favorite metal for metal pens and then I got this gravitas pocket pen this one's in stainless steel again so these all screw on to post this one you pop it off and it just slides on this thing is absolutely like indestructible it's bullet tough it's got a nice rib section there on the uh it's very ribs on the section I should say with
a PVD coating this pen is Thoroughly thought out well they all are for that matter and it just you pop it in there absolutely fantastic it is stainless steel so it's a little bit heavy but the weight does work well but the one thing you can see these pens are rolling around it has a flat spot on it so you can just put it there and same thing when you post it let's pop it off there put that on now it can stay on your desk these ones will roll away now I think that one
was the thing that sort of put it over the edge to make me decide but don't ask me again tomorrow because I might pick one of these pens if I had the the gravitas pocket in titanium I think it would make it the decision even easier I'd pick that right out of the gate but this was so so close and there's also one little final thing I gotta show you to make you see why I chose this panel this is this little feature that I discovered on this pen when I mentioned it to Ben wall
she goes you're the only person who's ever ever noticed it finally someone picked up on that so check this out you take the pocket pan put it on its back and just give it a little spin NOW Watch What Happens foreign see that it lands on its flat you can spin this a million times and it's just gonna goes go go go go and the last second it'll flip over and land on its flat that's such a cool little feature that's uh that's the extra brownie point that put it over the edge okay we got
two down three to go what's the next category that was cool as modern pens are I think we're gonna play homage and you have to have a vintage pen in your collection and also to feel the full experience the plethora of things that fountain pens have to offer you gotta have a flex pin so I have some some Flex pens I have some vintage pens and for me the Pelican 140 is just the absolute perfect blend I have a much more expensive Flex pen than this that's more rare more expensive more I guess prestigious but
there is just something about this little Pelican 140. I typically don't like small pins but I don't know what it is with this little 140 I absolutely adore this thing and this is one of my favorite pans if I have nothing else going on I got maybe 10 15 20 minutes even an hour where I'm just gonna sit down sort of My Moment of Zen and just practice my writing take my mind off a busy day or whatever else I got going on this this seems to be the pen I go for I have ones
that Flex more than this I still go for this pin so it's uh you know also from a price point it's pretty affordable you can get some good deals on this pin it's got a nice ink capacity this actually has more ink capacity than my Pelican modern m800 series which is kind of crazy when you consider just how much bigger this Pelican 800 series versus this vintage 140 this one still holds a touch more I don't know how they did it but it's pretty damn awesome and it's Mega reliable it's got a nice little Ebonite
feet on there as well it's always wet ready to go never hard starts you know you can I find you can see through the barrel a little bit better on these vintage ones than the modern ones so check in your ink capacity you know a fast start you know it's got one try I think it's got three quarter turn maybe even 5 8 to pop it off and just a beautiful little slip cap gets on there it's just got everything you want Ultra portable super cute and let's just show you the flex it's really good
foreign [Applause] it's so annoying when you goof a writing sample when you're doing a video anyways we'll pop that in there I can write with this pen all the way along and have beautiful writing the second I hit record I screw it up the last category I thought was maybe having like a luxury pen an heirloom pen a Grail pen now again this can change over time but there's two that was really really tough for me to decide on again if I had an Omas 360 in my hands right now my possession these would be
gone and be the Omas 360. so again this list could sort of change over time but I would keep these categories the same so it really came down to these two to have one sort of high-end or luxury pan or Grail pen whatever you want to call it now this Visconti is it's just fantastic like the the Mount Aetna lava resin that they have in here how cool is that the clip is absolutely superb and just The Styling the Bronze Age that goes with this with this resin too you know it as sort of patina
over time it picks up some oils and greases so it's a little bit shinier and glossier but if you want you can clean this and it becomes its old fresh self again and gives it a different look you can polish the brass or again let it patina over time the hook loop system on this cap is fantastic it never hard starts again now this nib was not what I wanted but thank you to mark baucus this is a fantastic nib this is this went from a never used to always use now you got a cool
Power filling system here like a vac filler in here as well it's and it's just make it comfortable and that capping mechanism is something you can play with all day but then I got the classic pen The Malt blonde 149. I absolutely love it uh you know one turn to pop off not as cool as a capping mechanism as the Visconti it has you know the the precious resin that's a translation thing by the way uh that sort of gets missed that we interpret the wrong way over here but it is a very high quality
resin this pen is superbly made I find my malt blondes are some of the best made pens I have it does have an ink window which is handy I can see right now I'm running low there's only a little bit of ink left so I gotta ink this one up that's a bit of a dig against that one but again I really this holds a lot of ink I don't run into those problems I think what makes me choose the Mont Blanc over the Visconti again both these nibs have been modified but I think it's
that just that larger nib like just to give you a comparison they're both great nibs but that's a Mondo big nib and it's kind kind of unique to the 149 I really enjoy that larger nib and this one I ground myself to its accursive italic as well to fine I'll do a writing sample of course this has the split Ebonite feed so this is like a late 80s it's got W Germany on the band all those kind of things but I mean that's similar whether it's New or Old but there's something about it when I
put it in my hand it just feels perfect and this again for me and again at this time like I said there could easily be another pin that knocks us out of here no problem but with the pens I have at hand right now when it comes to a luxury you know high-end pen it's got to be this one foreign that was a tough one for me to decide but just as I did the writing sample I went yep I made the right choice so we got everyday carry pocket pen a vintage and flex if
you can put it together that's sort of a bonus but you could separate if you need to uh next category I have was luxury pens the fifth one I'm gonna have is a travel pen now it comes to travel pens you might start thinking about ones that seal really well we got a pilot custom 823 it's got that shut off valve that's fantastic maybe something more affordable like a twisbee vac or something like that got some O-rings on here too shut off valve you can see how much ink you have when you're when you're traveling
this is a great little pen not my personal favorite I just not the most comfortable for me but you know it serves its purpose we got this back to the shown design you know whether it's in this one or a larger size this is the ceiling King you think that would be my sort of requirement when it comes to traveling but actually it's a little bit weird the thing I think about is just super usability and this isn't even the pilot this is the Mahjong A1 let me tell you why I chose this as my
favorite travel so when I think about traveling with a fountain pen you know I'm not going to have the perfect setup maybe it's in a hotel or you know I'm on a plane or even worse you're you're at a business conference or something like that where you're sitting in tiny little seats there's not even a desk you've got to kind of right on your lap or you're in a stadium for some huge convention or whatever this would be the pen I take along I don't have to worry about taking off a cap I can just
do this jot down the note that that speaker said something really motivational or interesting or really important so I can jot that down really quick I don't have to pop off caps or whatever this is the deal like and also it's Mega affordable I could go online and buy one of these right now for 35 bucks Canadian with free shipping somewhere maybe it's 38 somewhere in that range you know 30 dollars American I mean it performs extremely well I know this is a copy of the original the pilot capitalist or vanishing point whatever you want
to call it the decimal which is a little bit smaller they came up with the design you know the reason I chose this over this one is just costs you know if if I lose this on my trip I forget it in the seat back on the airplane or the hotel or it falls out of my bag whatever if I lost this I would really be upset you know I would really it's a really fantastic pen it is built better and all that good stuff but I probably wouldn't want to take it with me just
in case or someone steals it you know whatever it is yes it would suck if I lost this pen you know what's this 35 bucks but that's a lot less than this pen I wouldn't I wouldn't feel so terrible I would probably order one right away while I'm sitting there angry and just go on AliExpress or am wherever you're getting it from hit the button order now and the pan would arrive and I'd be happy again and I wouldn't you know think about that pen I lost and be kicking myself and it just performs you
got you know your cartridge or your converter that you want to use yes you know it shoots out a little bit of ink the I I did a full breakdown of this so I don't need to redo this but there's a few little features this isn't as good as the original but they did an amazing job for such the price they came out with so for me this would be the absolute perfect little travel pen you know you want to travel with it nib up there are better pens to deal with the changing in air
pressure on airplanes but if you just have it nib up while you're uh ascended and descending you really you really shouldn't have any ink leaking issues whatsoever so this might be a little bit controversial I'm you know sort of here promoting this is just my own personal choice but some people like the idea of buying pens that you know are copies of others I I get it but darn it this is such a good pin so there we go 505 we did everyday carry Pockets some type of vintage ideally with flex luxury pen and then
we had this one but wait I just realized this is a six pin case does that mean I get a freebie I gotta put something in here since there's room so I'll have something that's just a little bit of fun this is a pen that again if I lost all my pens this would probably be one of the very first I buy it is such a cool little pen I don't like the modern ones this is a vintage pilot Elite it turns from that small pen to a big pen and there's just something about this
pen I just like look at it sometimes because I think the styling of this vintage one just absolutely murders what the new ones do the even you know the uh the characters here the font that they use for the elite just look at that it looks really cool The Styling they don't do this type of detail anymore on these pans I really wish they went retro again on these pilot Elites or maybe some of the other pilot pans because at least for me this looks app absolutely fantastic you got the gold nib I think it
looks better on these vintage ones and on the modern ones and it's just such a unique little pen this really catches my eye so just for fun I have way more expensive pens maybe you would think are much better than this too I I guess so but spur the moment here this is one that I would buy again in a heartbeat and since I have room let's put that in position number six those were my top five pans for building sort of the perfect five pen collection had a little fun because I had an extra
pen there but you know the pens could change but I think the categories would remain the same and again like I said you know Omas 360 would kick that out maybe I find something better you know something better here whatever it is but at least with the pens I have now these are the ones I would go for if the wife said you gotta get rid of your pens you can only keep five this is how I would at least approach the problem and these are the ones currently I would use to to fill those
slots and I'd hide this one and actually have six and not even tell her but let me know which uh your top five pens would be would you score the categories the same or would you have five different categories would you want one pen of each nib size so you want an extra fine fine medium Broad and a stub or a flex would you choose it that way I'm curious what would you choose but this is the method I took let me know in the comments what you think we'll leave it there for now I
got tons more coming up we'll catch you next time foreign
