Video Transcript:
I spent the last day watching materials from North Korean television and experienced a whole range of emotions from Shock to bewilderment, the first thing that catches my eye is the feeling of a parallel world in which all information is presented in a certain tone with one clear goal, unlike the television we are used to, where there is a diversity of opinions in the DPRK, it serves the sole purpose of forming a correct perception of reality, each program, each plot is part of a large ideology, there is no accident, the announcers speak in a special solemn tone, as if they are reporting something fateful everyday news is presented as historical events, the feeling that the viewer should not just listen but be imbued with the importance of each phrase. But the most amazing thing is what exactly they say in the news broadcasts; if you turn on the North Korean news channel, you might think chaos; the main message of most releases; the world abroad is rapidly falling apart; people are suffering there; and the only safe and stable place is the DPRK; protests; economic crises; natural disasters; if something like this happens somewhere abroad, this becomes the reason for big stories; footage of demons orders may be old But they are presented as if this is happening right now and most importantly there is no context, they simply show footage of problems after which the announcer confidently declares that the Western system is collapsing; contrast is created instantly as soon as the story about disasters abroad ends, immediately followed by a report about how wonderful the people of North Korea live, happy workers, ideal harvests, scientific breakthroughs, this creates in the viewer the feeling that outside the DPRK there is nothing but destruction. But there is one important point that makes DPRK television even more unusual - the absence of advertising if in most countries advertising is the engine of the economy, in North Korea it simply exists here, no one sells goods, does not agitate to buy something new, does not entice with discounts, but this does not mean that the screen is free from propaganda, on the contrary, instead of commercial advertising, there is constant indoctrination every break between programs - these are not advertisements for shampoo or a car, but videos with military equipment, happy working schoolchildren who happily study the works of the leader, these are peculiar motivational videos whose purpose is to convince people that they live in the best place on earth.
personal numbers of songs about the homeland about the leader about the great people, they are performed with complete seriousness with deep emotions and the audience in the hall listens in awe; one gets the impression that television does not just inform, but literally programs the minds of the audience. But if propaganda videos can somehow be expected, then what is really surprising is this incredible amount of airtime dedicated to the Kims; it is impossible to imagine North Korean television without plots. Prim, just mentions are full chronicles where the leaders are the main characters of almost all news broadcasts; if you turn on the TV, you can see how the announcers enthusiastically tell how the Leader visited the factory, inspected the harvest or gave wise advice to scientists, his every step is presented as a historical event, if he climbed the mountain, it is a symbol of great power, if he talked with the workers, this is caring for the people, a special place is occupied by archival records with past leaders, from them a whole mythology is formed where each of the Kims is not just a politician, but almost a superman who performed feats, saved the country and even supposedly had unique abilities.
Such presentation creates the effect of no alternative. It seems that no one except the ruling dynasty is capable of ruling the country and it works. After all, most viewers do not have access to alternative sources of information.
But if news and official chronicles are presented with complete seriousness, then entertainment programs look completely different; entertainment programs in North Korea are a separate genre; there are no talk shows, comedy programs or reality that are familiar to us; the main form of entertainment is large-scale concerts; theatrical productions and patriotic [music] performances, the main rule is that everything must be perfect, each number is performed with military precision; crowd scenes are played out in perfect synchronization and the smiles of the participants seem literally trained; one of the most popular programs is concerts with songs about the Motherland; the audience in the hall listens to them with genuine trepidation and at the end they may even cry from being overwhelmed, accompanied by inserts of chronicles so that the audience does not forget what all this is for. Besides concerts, there are documentaries telling about the life of the people. But they all follow the same line in the country.
There are no problems, people are happy. And the army and the leader protect them from any threats. The question arises: How do they even watch this content?
After all, the Internet in the DPRK is actually prohibited and there is no talk about streaming services; television in North Korea is the only source of information for the majority of residents. But with themselves with televisions, the situation is not so clear-cut, unlike developed countries where everyone can choose a model to their liking, here the equipment is strictly controlled by the state; televisions in the DPRK come in two types, produced within the country and imported from China; their own production is extremely limited. And most local models are outdated devices that look like they were released several decades ago; more modern options come from China, but with an important feature, they have special protection built in that blocks any foreign channels; another interesting fact: only state-owned TVs are programmed in the DPRK channels residents cannot simply connect to a satellite or find alternative sources of information if someone tries to hack the system or watch foreign programs this can lead to serious consequences not every family has a TV especially in poor areas many watch programs in public places for example in work areas or at special meetings where only the right programs are shown But even if a person has a TV this does not mean that he can watch it whenever he wants broadcasting here is on a strict schedule And in the evening the programs end and the screen simply turns off But if television is so limited then who will does people watch it?
Do people have a choice? North Korean television - It is not just a source of information, but an obligatory part of the life of citizens; they watch it not only because it is interesting, but because it is so in enterprises, educational institutions, in the army, televisions are turned on almost always; people are forced to watch programs in public places , and ignoring them is already a risk. In some cases, attendance at a collective viewing is mandatory and is even recorded.
Who came and who did not; in families, television also occupies an important place; especially attentively they watch official news, which is presented as the main source of Truth, if someone expresses doubts or kriti what they saw can lead to serious consequences However, in recent years, people have appeared who have begun to look for alternative ways of obtaining information; flash drives and disks with foreign films are illegally entering the country; flash drives and disks with foreign films are being distributed on the Black Market; they are watched in secret under threat of punishment. But for many, this is the only way to find out how the world outside the DPRK works; however, television still remains the main instrument of consciousness control, even when sports games are shown on TV. North Korea is a country where sports are not just entertainment, but part of the state ideology, including sports.
programs can be seen that here they are presented not as a competition or a spectacular show, but as a demonstration of the strength of the nation And superiority over the rest of the world, ordinary sports broadcasts are rare, there are almost no live reports from international tournaments on the air, and if they show major events, then only in a heavily edited form. For example, if a North Korean athlete wins, they talk about it for a long time with pride, emphasizing the unshakable spirit and loyalty to the Motherland. But if he loses this fact, either sports broadcasts are hushed up, unlike most countries where sporting events are accompanied by videos of sponsors and This is not the case with brand logos in North Korea; instead, they show patriotic slogans, footage from athletes’ training sessions and ceremonial speeches in which Victories are attributed not so much to the skill of the athletes as to the wise leadership of the country.
One of the most popular sports programs is army competitions, they look like a mixture of military exercises and sports tests, obstacle course running in full equipment, throwing grenades instead of the usual javelin, swimming in icy water, all this is presented with such pathos that it seems as if this is not just a sport, but preparation for a great mission, but even more attention is paid to cinema. North Korean films are a special genre that is difficult to compare with the cinema we are used to. Cinema in North Korea is not just entertainment, but a powerful propaganda tool.
By turning on any local film, you can immediately notice that it was created not for the sake of art, but to educate certain ideals. At the heart of most plots, heroic images of the main characters are either Soldiers fighting for the Motherland or workers who work. In the name of the Great Goal, any story is built to show devotion to the people and the country has a separate layer of self-sacrifice and hatred of enemies - these are films about the Kims; they are shown regularly; they are regularly presented in historical chronicles.
Although they often contain outright myths, for example, there are stories about how one of the leaders of the DPRK performed feats from childhood, possessed genius abilities and even invented technologies that existed in the world long before him. Visually, North Korean cinema is reminiscent of old Soviet films; strict editing; rich music; exaggerated emotions of the actors. However, the quality of filming often leaves much to be desired and the staging of scenes sometimes it looks too theatrical Another important point - the lack of foreign cinema, residents of the country cannot see Western blockbusters, European dramas or Asian action films, with the exception of old Soviet films that are considered correct, everything else is under the strictest ban, if we figured out the films, what children watch and what North Korean cartoons look like, children's programs in the DPRK - These are not just cartoons or entertainment programs This is a powerful tool for shaping the worldview from a very early age, ordinary children's shows here are almost impossible to find instead of them patriotic tales, stories about the exploits of the people and leaders of the country, animated films that inspire respect for the authorities and hatred for enemies, for example, one of the most famous cartoons is the story of a brave boy who exposes spies and saves the country, enemies are depicted as caricatures with grotesque facial features, greedy eyes, sly smiles, the message is obvious, the world is divided into good and bad and bad - it is always foreigner programs that teach children to be hardworking and obedient they show how little heroes help adults, how from an early age they realize their responsibility to the country laughter lightness naivety all this is minimized here, it is important that the child not just have fun.
And from an early age he understands that his main goal is to be a devoted citizen. There are also children's concerts where kids sing songs about the great leader about the Motherland and the army, these performances are held with incredible seriousness, children sing with solemn faces and the audience looks at them with pride, such a system of singing forms people who, from childhood, perceive Propaganda as something natural And if from childhood you are told the correct story, then your perception of the past will be formed exactly as the state needs history in North Korea - This is not just science, but an important element of the state ideology by including the historical program, you can see that the past is interpreted here as it is beneficial to the authorities the main feature of presenting history is the glorification of one’s own country and the nization of enemies any war any conflict any event is presented on the one hand The DPRK has always been right, always won and always suffered from aggressive external forces This is especially noticeable in the example of the Korean War in the official Chronicles they say that the war was started by Western countries and North Korea only heroically defended itself while completely hushing up the real facts, which are inconvenient for the state version, another interesting point is the mythology around the leaders in historical programs you can hear stories from how the founder of the country, Kim Irsen, defeated the Japanese invaders, about his incredible military exploits about how he accomplished things that in reality were simply inaccessible to him, such distortions of history form in the audience a clear perception of the world, the past of the DPRK was filled with struggle, the country has always been a victim of external aggression, and the leaders always saved the people and it works because the announcers who broadcast all these stories do it with such conviction that it seems they believe in it themselves. And most importantly, they almost never change there is one curious phenomenon in North Korean television, news anchors, they don’t just report information, they are the faces of the regime, and what’s interesting is that they remain on the screen for decades; if in other countries, announcers change giving way to new faces, then in the DPRK everything is different; the same people have been reading the news for decades and their style remains unchanged; they speak confidently loudly with clear diction; sometimes their intonations seem too emotional, as if they are not just conveying information, but reading a patriotic poem; the most famous announcer of North Korea Ri Chun-hee she has become a symbol of North Korean television she can be seen in the most important news releases when significant events are announced her voice sounds as if she talks not just about events but about fateful things that will change the world such constancy creates a sense of stability in the audience the same faces the same tone the same expressions television becomes not just a source of Information but a symbol of the eternity of the regime But the most amazing thing is the emotions that are present in each episode, sometimes they look so dramatic that they seem staged if you look closely watch North Korean broadcasts, you can notice that emotions occupy a special place there.
Here people do not just report the news, they experience them. One of the most striking examples is the announcement of the death of the leader. When the news reported the death of Kim Jong Il, the announcers were sobbing live, they could barely speak.
And this moment was broadcast throughout the country. Theatrics are present in everything, how people react to the speeches of the leader, how they applaud at concerts. How the audience freezes in delight Listening to songs about the homeland, emotions here are brought to the limit, no one should remain indifferent to this creates the effect of a collective experience, people watch how others cry and feel that they should experience the same thing.
This is how television forms not just an opinion but feelings, but there are things that are never talked about on North Korean TV, despite round-the-clock broadcasting and a wide range of programs, North Korean television has strict restrictions on certain topics, some things here simply do not exist, they are not talked about, not discussed, and the viewer does not even suspect that such information may, in principle, the first and main forbidden topic is Life outside the country, if mentioned in the news other states are only in a negative context, but they never show real footage of the lives of ordinary people abroad; North Korean viewers do not see what modern cities look like; what technologies exist in the world; how ordinary families live in other countries; the second topic is poverty and problems within the country; the difficulties in the economy; lack of food; low standard of living are not discussed in any program; if natural disasters or economic difficulties happen somewhere, then this is presented exclusively from the point of view of the people united and overcame everything thanks to the leadership; the third prohibited topic is desertion and escapes Although from time to time a whistleblower of a program about traitors to the Motherland appears on the screen, not a single plot says that people are fleeing the country because it is difficult to live in it; rather, on the contrary, they are presented as weak, deceived by enemies and caught in terrible conditions abroad. Fourth Forbidden topic - criticism of the authorities, there is not even a hint of the possibility of error on the part of the leaders; all their decisions are declared the only correct ones. And if any changes occur in the country, it is only because the leadership wisely chooses a new path - such a system information control makes North Korean television not just a source of news , but a real tool for creating an artificial reality After a whole day of watching local channels, you get the feeling that you are in another world, a world where the Past is rewritten, the present is controlled And the future is predetermined But what remains in your head After all this, what is it like to spend a day watching North Korean TV, despite total control over television in North Korea, there is a shadow market for illegal content, people risking their freedom try to find out what is happening outside their country and use the most unexpected methods for this, one of the most common methods are smuggling flash drives and hard drives with foreign films and programs, these media enter the country mainly from China through the black market; they are transmitted secretly, most often under the cover of darkness.
And those who distribute them use complex systems of code words and trusted people on such flash drives you can find Korean dramas from South Korea, Western films, news reports and even entertainment shows. But the most interesting thing is the illegal recordings of real North Korean events filmed by the citizens themselves; sometimes in underground markets you can get videos with real living conditions in the country filmed in telephones and secretly exported abroad, another method is underground radio stations. Despite the fact that most radio equipment is only made for local frequencies, craftsmen find ways to modify receivers to catch signals from South Korea, China and even the United States.
