in this video we're going to cover the three best restaurant marketing strategies for 2024 I'll even share gamechanging AI tools that can increase sales for your restaurant based on my experience testing these out across thousands of restaurants because AI artificial intelligence like chat GPT is starting to change everything for how restaurants grow so these strategies are designed to help you one get new customers but without having to spend money in ads two two increase your average order profit by up to 200% with one simple change and three turn new customers into dieh hard regulars automatically
what inspired this video was catching up with my friend MO from Talking tacos because his restaurant is doing all three of these strategies and has supercharged them over the past few weeks using the latest in AI I knew he was doing well because I've seen him grow from one location to 10 locations in just 3 years but when he told me some of the the wild numbers he was seeing from each of these strategies I knew that I needed to make a video to share some of these learnings with other restaurant owners so he gave
me permission to share the strategies how he's doing them and the numbers because now that he's expanding and has franchises pounding down his door he wants to support the broader restaurant community so let's start with the best strategy for acquiring new customers the best strategy for getting new customers for a restaurant is Google SEO combined with AI you may be thinking Google SEO what I thought it was Instagram or Tik Tok when I was first getting started in helping restaurants 6 years ago I was convinced that it would be Instagram or Facebook that would work
best in getting new customers because we're constantly told how powerful social media is and how Google SEO is kind of thought of as a more old school strategy but then I looked at how many customers actually came from social media and I realized the dirty secret that the marketing gurus won't ever tell you that that social media is a scam for restaurants when you see the numbers behind T and Taco's online success and all the other restaurants I'm about to share and how they're using Ai and Google combined you'll understand how Google SEO can be
the best strategy for acquiring customers in 2024 and why social media just doesn't make sense for that purpose but it has a different purpose that we'll get into a few years back the talk and Tacos team really wanted to step up their social media game because they heard how big Tik Tok and Instagram were're getting and they execute well they posted a video of their employees dancing in the kitchen that went viral it got them hundreds of thousands of free views and they also made super tasty food pictures and food videos that people loved seeing
and they got amazing engagement this is how they've grown to over 123,000 followers and they're posting multiple times every day averaging 10,000 Impressions and 1,000 likes per post meaning that they get exposure to over 500,000 people per month month organically on Instagram which is impressive they have their tracking in place on their restaurant website and over the past 30 days they've gotten 700 new customers from online sources but then when we click into that tracking that's where things get interesting because we see in their owner.com dashboard that of all of their customers that they acquired
over the last 30 days only 78 came from Instagram where did the rest come from you might be wondering turns out 537 or the majority by far came from Google even with that massive Instagram following Google SEO is literally bringing them seven times more customers 537 per month from Google versus 78 from Instagram the talking tacos team has been brilliantly investing in Google SEO the whole time so it's a perfect case study because they've done both and the new customers from Google are outperforming social media 7 to one even though they're getting a lot more
Impressions on social media so you're probably wondering why is this happening how how could you get half a million views and 78 customers the answer there is there's two major problems that make social media a scam for restaurants the first problem is that Instagram and Tik Tok are Global platforms not local platforms imagine we have an Italian restaurant and we make some bomb chicken alfredo somebody is then swiping on their social media feed and we posted that chicken alfredo so they see that juicy tasty looking video of it and they're kind of hungry it looks
good so far so good except they live in Nantucket and our restaurant is in San Francisco people on those apps are all around the world but most restaurants customers have to be within a 10mile radius of their location to want to actually buy and become a regular so what are the odds that somebody randomly shown a post on social media will be within 10 Mi of our restaurant even if we're in New York City the most populated ated city in the United States it's less than 1% of 1% and there's another issue with social media
and restaurants because even if we get Super Lucky and our restaurant happens to show our picture of our food to a customer within 10 miles of our restaurant we've made it mom look at us the problem then is that they're not very likely to become a customer because they don't have the intent to buy when people are on social media they're there to be entertained they're generally not there looking for restaurants to order from so convincing them to pause their entertainment and try our restaurant is very hard let's use Sally the social media scroller as
an example Sally is scrolling on Instagram one afternoon as per usual her daily routine and she's seeing what her friends and family are up to and following her favorite celebrities and creators she's there to be entertained to watch what they're doing and when your restaurant picture pops up in her feed what is Sally going to think even if Sally's 5 miles away which is super rare what what of the odds that she's in the mood to order from a new restaurant of your Cuisine type in that moment pretty low it actually just looks like an
advertisement which Sally is kind of immune to so she Tunes it out there's already so many pictures of tasty looking food on Instagram as it is and even if she notices it and it looks especially great she's probably not in the mood for ordering Italian food in that moment and she she'll likely just keep scrolling so what does Sally do when she is in the mood for buying food from a new restaurant if she's like most Americans She searches Google not door Dash not Uber Eats Google baby that's where we've been conditioned to search for
things for the past 20 years some people open the door Dash app and scroll but the data we've seen across thousands of restaurants proves that most people in the US still start their food searches by searching Google it's the secret that the delivery apps don't want you to know which is why the delivery apps are so aggressive about advertising on your listing there but wait it gets better Sally doesn't just search for restaurants near me on Google because when she's hungry she's craving a specific item like most of us are she's looking for a new
restaurant of a specific type so Sally searches for best sushi in Santa Monica on Google and then boom Adam's authentic Japanese restaurant shows up at the top which as you can tell is a very authentic Japanese restaurant anyway I need to stop messing around because this is actually a very very important key to understand so back to the story Sally is there clicking on that first result on Google of Adam's authentic sushi restaurant because most people assume like Sally that the first thing that comes up at the top of Google is the best option so
let's take a step back now and compare Sally on Instagram versus Sally on Google to understand why Google is so much more powerful on Instagram Sally might be there at any time of day when she's bored waiting in line on the bus when she's at work scrolling and pretending to work she's there to mess around and socialize with friends she wants to be distracted by social media that is what it's for so she's pretty hard to convince to want to buy food from a new restaurant even if she happens to be nearby which is rare
but on Google When Sally searching for the best sushi restaurants she's ready to buy already so instead of needing to convince Sally to get off social media which is a hard task if you ever tried to convince somebody to get off social media and to start craving our Cuisine type and then select our restaurant to order from all we need to do with Google is show first when she's searching and in the mood so how do we take advantage of this for Words be easy to find that's where Google SEO comes in the only person
we have to convince that we're the best result to show first is Mr Google he's a very reasonable and predictable man that's the good news as long as you know the keys to his heart so what are the keys to Mr Google's heart making sure that we tell him why our option is the best option where people are searching for food in our area there are a lot of things that you could do with SEO and SEO Consultants will tell you that there's a hundred little factors and that they need all these fancy packages to
optimize them keyword stuffing load speed metad description schema Mark backlink building you pay us money and we'll do it all it's all sorts of mumbo jumbo that's designed to confuse you but I know you're super busy and not a full-time web developer so the good news is what these Consultants won't tell you is that there's only a few things that make the biggest impact it's the 8020 rule where 20% of the tweaks Drive 80% of the results and the rest is just icing on the cake and I know this because we have helped thousands of
restaurant owners create web pages and tested hundreds of different tweaks to compare which ones make the biggest difference on Google in the shortest amount of time so in terms of Instagram and Tik Tok this is good news because it means that you don't have to be TW working in the kitchen on Tik Tok to get new customers but what you do have to do is get really good at telling Mr Google why he should Point people to your website when they're searching for your food so let's quickly break down the three highest impact strategies talk

90 people per month that are searching Google for best guacamole and myar Florida because they've set up dedicated Pages for each of these and they're literally the only restaurant in town that has them since this SEO secret isn't out yet they rank at the top for all of the items on their menu it's a huge part of how they're getting over 500 new customers from Google every month what's extra smart about what they do is they have automated Menu Pages integrated into their online ordering so guests can easily place an order on their website in
less than 1 minute after they've discovered them for that dish using Apple pay and a lot of people make pulse bu just minutes after discovering their restaurant because they' made it so simple that makes it so much easier for all of those people discovering that restaurant for the first time to immediately convert into new customers which we're going to get into has other best practices that very few restaurant owners know about you might be thinking to yourself that's awesome Adam but that sounds like a lot of work to create a page for every single one
of my menu items so that we can show up at the top and you would be right you can do it manually in any website builder but it usually takes like 10 hours to make Pages for the top 30 dishes on a Restaurant's menu by the way it's worth it even if it takes 10 hours but the problem is that a lot of restaurant owners don't have 10 spare hours to learn this new SEO thing I used to help restaurant owners do this manually my team and I would sit down and pour over our website
builder making sure each menu item had its own page because of how much extra traffic it would drive we'd have them get extra photos of those dishes and then figure out what sentences we could pair with the primary keywords and add in lat and semantic indexing to these pages and it was pretty complicated so we thought to ourselves there has to be a better way but for years there wasn't until 2023 happened because in 2023 there was these new AI tools artificial intelligence that made this process possible automatically That's What mo from Taco tacos did

else is competing for these terms with dedicated pages but then one day Mo was like okay Adam it's great that we're showing up for all of the possible searches in our city of mirar now but what about the surrounding cities to which I'm like Mo you Greedy Boy can't you just be happy can't you just be grateful that we built this for you I'm totally joking I was actually like wait that's genius Mo so he trained the AI to generate Pages not only for his menu items but for the surrounding cities where he doesn't have
locations like tacos in Country Club Florida or guacamole in West Lake Florida Etc we just added this to the talk and talkers website a month ago and it's already driven 20 new customers for them every month on autopilot and without any ads and it's just from this one AI change what's so cool about this is because only the most techsavvy restaurants use the strategy there's almost no competition for the hundreds of ready to buy new customers in every city that are searching Google for each restaurant type so that is just the first SEO cheat code

a month based on my experience in working with thousands of restaurants anyway let's get back to the second major SEO cheat code which is number two making sure each image has alt text to rank on Google Images alt text is just geek speake for telling Mr Google what a picture is that's a simple way to think about it because as we know in restaurants people love to eat with their eyes they not only search dishes they're craving but they specifically look for images to figure out what looks good remember the whole point of SEO is
helping Mr Google refer your page first when people ask him to find something but here's the problem Mr Google can't tell you what's in a picture he can only read text so the way we tell him what's in an image is we tag it with what's called drum roll please all text that's just a phrase telling Mr Google what an image is so he can know where to rank it what I've seen work best is having tons of menu images on your website and online ordering and Dish pages and then using this formula for setting
alt tax best name of dish in city state for example best beia tacos in myamar Florida or best garlic bread in Lakeside California and so forth you get the idea so if we go back to the talk and Tacos example a huge part of their 537 new customers every month from Google come because if we look up all their most popular dishes and then click into Google Images they have a monopoly it's all pictures of their menu with their text and it's impossible to not click into talk and Tacos effectively like if we click into
Google images for that term best beia tacos in mirar Florida six of the top nine images are of pictures of their food and it's pretty epic it's just free customers so then when people click on the picture because it looks good it brings them right to their dedicated item page that we created earlier where they can see reviews and in a description and even place an alline order Mr Google loves bringing people to Dedicated Pages for dedicated menu item searches because it's more relevant to what it is they're searching for versus just giving them a
huge menu to sort through by the way Pro tip for you the name of the dish you put in alt text has to be as generic as possible like if your garlic bread is called garlic otavio family bread they just rename that to garlic bread on Google or whatever somebody would be searching for if they didn't know your menu or story but wanted that dish by the way if if you own a restaurant and you want to increase the amount of free customers you're getting from Google comment your restaurant name down below in the city

information they need in the order they need it my friend Antoinette the owner of otavio in Lakeside California has really mastered this and she sees a $6,000 boost in monthly sales from this one strategy alone her website follows the same proven format I see work again and again so let me share the secret recipe with you that works for driving conversion so that you can put it on your website I'll put anet's website on screen for you to visualize as you can see the first section of anet's website is the summary of the restaurant it's
one phrase to describe its differentiation along with a beautiful menu picture before scrolling when a guest first lands on this website the studies show that we have less than 7 Seconds to grab their attention and help them decide if they should keep scrolling if they're on the right place so we should bring back the legendary Sally from The Last example back for this one to make it clear why it's so psychologically powerful to nail this Down Sally is now in Lakeside California visiting her grandparents for Easter what a coincidence and she's also in the mood
for Italian so she searches Google for best Italian restaurant in Lakeside California and what do you know antoanet restaurant otavio comes up first so she clicks into the otavio website from Google but anette's job isn't done there what is the first question Sally is probably asking herself about antonette's website well she searched for Italian restaurants so she's probably asking what makes this place the best Italian restaurant in this neighborhood and Anette now has less than 7 Seconds to communicate to Sally on her website to get her to choose otavio instead of all the other Italian
restaurants so that's why Antoinette has on her website our family's recipes from Italy BR to Lakeside her differentiator being a family inspired authentic Italian restaurant and then the next phrase on her website says best Italian restaurant in Lakeside communicating to Sally that this place is in fact the best along with a picture of their most popular dish to hook Sally in and get her to start craving her food that's why it's so important for that first section of our website to have all those key elements they're answering Sally's first question then the next question on
Sally's mind is naturally what else is on this restaurant menu so that's why the next section is a slider of the most popular menu items to allow people to see a menu preview and eat with their eyes of all of anette's gorgeous pictures as you can see from the otavio site pictures with the item names are the best way to accomplish this and they should ideally link to the online ordering system right there so that when people are ready to order it's as easy as possible now Sally knows what makes this restaurant the best and
the menu items she's probably starting to Crave it so there's a 50% chance she's asking this as her next question how should I order this food should I pick up the phone should I order through their website should I try to find them on door Dash and we need to hit Sally right then Pow with the clear reasons to order from otavio website rather than door Dash or else what's going to happen she's going to pull out the door Dash app and she'll be lost to them forever that's why Antoinette then has a section on
otavio website that educates the guest on why to order directly from her website she puts big tag Tex educating them on the benefits saying order directly from our website to save money and fees get faster service earn free food via our loyalty program and support local business so now if Sally's ready to buy she'll buy right from the website kapal saving the restaurant a huge amount of money in fees and all the customer data we've seen thousands of restaurants that prove that it makes a huge impact to have a section on your website educating guests
on why to order directly but if Sally isn't ready to buy it means she's likely asking herself before ordering does this place have good reviews so that's why if you scroll down on the website the next section you would see is the reviews showing off some of the five star reviews that are most likely to make somebody convert into a new customer from just being a stranger that visited the website and these can all be automatically pulled in through AI just like the images can there's another benefit to reviews by the way reviews are rich
content that Mr Google really appreciates because it gives him more context to use in ranking a restaurant and they're proven to increase the rate of people actually ordering from a restaurant when they show up on pages which in turn helps the restaurant rank higher in Mr Google's eyes because he sees the more people I send to this place the happier they are they seem to order from this restaurant these are the important things to have on the restaurant's homepage after we covered the top section and manyu sections because 70% of people check online reviews when
deciding on a new restaurant and we don't want them going to the unfair third party review sites where they can see what ridiculous Kens complain about we want to give them curated reviews that describe our restaurant experience and drive them quickly to a buying decision like I mentioned it's not just Anette using this formula it's the standard way that restaurant owners using our website builder product set things up because after testing many versions of this this one works best so I'd recommend copying this format as soon as possible because it's still new but spreading like
wildfire among restaurant owners and if you don't your competitors May and then they'll be the ones to get the customer searching for your Cuisine type or your menu items in your area okay so now that we've got this steady source of new customers how do we make as much in sales and profit from them as possible that brings us to the second most powerful restaurant marketing strategy for 2024 this will specifically increase the average order size and profit from each order strategic order upselling using AI you may be thinking upselling isn't marketing because when most
people think of marketing they think of promotions and advertising but I Define marketing as taking action to increase sales and this action is one of the most powerful ways to not only increase sales when done right but also massively increase profits have you ever been on Amazon looking for some new stuff like maybe some kitchen wear and you start looking for a non-stick pant pan then all of a sudden you see a frequently bought together and you start adding a fancy looking spatula to the order 30 minutes later we've got a new electric mixer some
hand towels some new knives and we're sitting there thinking I have a problem I need help Amazon does this upselling intentionally and you can too the other major Playbook we need to steal from is McDonald's imagine if you could teach your staff one sentence that would double your profit every time a customer says yes it would be magic right McDonald's does do you want fries with that is there a key phrase you can metaphorically ask your customers this but in an even smarter way because what's better is it's even more profitable to do online because
you can use AI to help you and to suggest something that is perfectly relevant to that customer in that moment which I'll get to in a second talk and Tacos does this really well and they've been able to take their average check size up by $5 as a result 10% while doubling their profit on online orders here's the math the average online order is about $50 usually that order size will be mostly from the guests ordering Entre but the food cost on Onre is usually much higher than other items on the menu because Entre tend
to include expensive ingredients like meat so let's say that our restaurant operates at a 10% profit margin which is a bit higher than average on that $50 order that means making $5 in profit now here's where things get really interesting if we're able to get the average order size from $50 to just $55 by upselling the right items through the experience of the guest building that cart then we don't just increase our sales by $5 or 10% we also increase our profit by about $5 and our profit was previously just $5 so that's a 100%
increase the right items to upsell are are low food cost high margin items like appetizers Beverages and desserts that's why McDonald's is always pushing fries because they cost them 7 cents to make with potatoes and oil and then they charge $2 for them lucky for us appetizers Beverages and desserts are also the items that pair best with Entre the next question is how do you build this into your online ordering experience so it is as simple and effective as possible in increasing that guest's order if you're you're using something like toast or any cloud-based point
of sale or maybe Chow da for your online ordering the good news is that you can do it manually in the oldfashioned way here's how you create two optional modifiers for each of your entree dishes the first is titled two meaning step two select your beverage and then step three is select your dessert with three options that pair best with that entree and price increases if you're doing it manually this way it's best to select dishes that don't have modifiers themselves so that if you see it just added to an order there's no question on

to do that it's important to discuss why it's so important one of the restaurant owners that has taught me the power of having regulars is my friend timy from Witchita Kansas she owns a restaurant called doah diner everyone knows that especially at family-friendly diners regulars come all the time but when we looked at her numbers for how much revenue is coming from each customer I was blown away because not only is it a regular heavy business but 20% of her customers that come the most frequently make up 80% of her revenue and maybe that's no
surprise to you if you've ever studied your own numbers because it turns out it's not just diners that have this Dynamic it's every restaurant that is outside of extremely touristy areas now providing amazing food and a great guest experience is the most important factor in whether guests become regulars but it's no longer enough because in the super competitive world of restaurants with people being bombarded by other restaurants ads and constant notifications and social media posts and being told about competitors we have to keep people thinking of our restaurant in this noisy world after that first
order is placed regardless of how great our food is so how do you do that how do you stand out how do you keep them coming back you stay top of Mind by reminding them a lot you have to increase the volume of your Outreach and reminders so you you don't get lost in the sea of their notifications you may be thinking that sounds great but I don't have the time and I don't want my customers to think of me as a pest sending email and text campaigns would be a lot of work and it's
like a full-time job to have to log in MailChimp every week and figure out what to say and how to say it and how to design the email and how to grow my email list and I didn't even know that I'd have to be a digital marketer when I started this restaurant and I really don't want to have to do all that and I completely understand that it's not realistic to be doing that every week that's where AI comes into the picture because it allows you to operate like an MBA level marketer but without needing
to spend thousands of hours learning every system and then spending dozens of hours every week in those systems sending out messages to your customers AI allows you to send these messages to the right people at the right time automatically it can even help you customize these messages so they're optimized for converting those customers to order more frequently from you so before we get into setting up the right automations to send out let's talk about how we can build up our email list to be as big as possible and use that to get new customers because
even among the best restaurant websites over 80% of a restaurant's website visitors won't convert into customers on that first visit which is why it's important to collect their information on that visit it enables us to stay top of mind for them until they buy and make more money for every website visitor as a result so where do you collect their information you already know that we've optimized now our homepage and brought in that proven formula for conversion like we showed anet's website doing but what we do now is we add a simple Banner at the
top that turns the website into an email collecting machine where when people visit the homepage they immediately are able to see a place where they can opt into marketing by providing their email and phone number and see the benefits of doing so my friend Rahul the owner of Saffron Indian Kitchen in Ambler Pennsylvania has mastered this and it's driven him alone over $90,000 in extra sales over the the past 3 years at the very top of his website he has a banner that says join saffron rewards win $500 be entered in a drawing to win
at the end of the month and then when you click it you get a simple popup that asks for the customer's name email phone number and birthday for marketing automation I recommend either doing something like this or at least having a place if you don't want to do a raffle that just talks about how joining the email list means getting alerts on specials new menu items events Rewards or whatever the benefits of joining your online Club are they're important to describe so that we don't just say give us our email so that we can spam
you it's not a very compelling pit so once we've got those emails what do we do that's where the automatic campaigns come into place and why email marketing is so powerful even in 2024 so let's look back at that example of talking tacos what they do is they have one automatic email campaign that is designed to turn website visitors who gave us their email but aren't yet customers into new customers it starts by thanking them for signing up for email marketing while showing them pictures of the most popular dishes in that thank you email so
they can begin to eat with their eyes pictures are key in these welcome emails because people love to eat with their eyes if they've already expressed interest in trying your restaurant the pictures tease them visually to try your food soon it then sends automatic emails like these that I'll put on screen a few times a week for the next month where it's telling potential customers about the most popular dishes on the menu and specials and just as importantly why to order directly from the restaurant's website or app rather than ordering from the delivery apps like
Uber Eats we're also using email to educate customers on that we also mix it up so that we're not just spamming the customer with order from our restaurant order from our restaurant order from our restaurant but we also send interesting emails that tell the restaurant's story of how and why Rahul the owner started it and what their Specialties are to build that connection with the person who just joined their email list to learn more about the restaurant then once that potential customer becomes an actual new customer it switches into the new customer into regular customer
