Early one morning John was walking in the woods near his cabin. Suddenly he stopped. A piercing howl sounded in the area.
He set down his camping gear and slowly walked closer to peer through the undergrowth. In the clearing he faced a huge timber wolf. His legs seemed caught in a trap and he tried to free himself.
But then he seemed to give up and lie down again. The wolf looked tired, as if he had lost all hope. John was shocked.
He wanted to help the animal. But as he got closer, he got frightened and tried to pull on the chains. The wolf growled and his hair stood up.
But more out of fear than out of real anger. John backed away, not wanting to risk hurting himself. But then he noticed something he hadn't expected.
The wolf was clearly a female. But that alone wasn't surprising. Her teats were full of milk.
That meant there had to be babies somewhere, longingly waiting for their mother if they were still alive. Nursing puppies cannot survive very long without their mother. If John wanted to reunite the puppies with their mother, he would have to act quickly.
But he couldn't get any closer to the animal without fear that the wolf would hurt him. Because a wild animal was unpredictable in such a stressful situation. The wolf was almost dying.
It seemed like she lost a lot of blood from the injury to her leg. If left alone, it would be certain death. John didn't want to let it get that far.
After everything he had already experienced in his life, he had become the kind of person who never gave up. Nor was he ready to give up on this dying mother wolf. He knew that every second he wasted could mean that either this wolf or one of her babies would not make it.
He had to act now. Unsure of how to get the wolf's leg out of the trap, John worked up his courage. He gently touched her paw.
To his surprise, she didn't respond. She was already completely gone. It was now or never.
He carefully held the wolf's head in one hand. With his other hand, he pressed the button on the trap to release it. But she didn't open.
She was stuck. It was also bent, which is probably what happened when the wolf tried to escape . John didn't have time to think.
He grabbed a rock and hit the trap release button. He slapped it until it sprang open. Then with all his might he lifted the wolf onto his shoulder and dragged her to his hut.
This was only a few hundred meters away, but it still took him almost an hour. He put the wolf down by the fireplace. She was totally hypothermic.
As the house warmed up, he was able to see the wolf's injuries, which he cleaned and tended to with his first-aid kit. John was medically trained and knew exactly what to do. Her leg was injured but luckily not broken.
Had he waited any longer, she would have lost her leg for sure. Now he only hoped that he could save her life in time too. She slowly began to show signs of life.
When she growled at him for the first time again, he knew she would be fine. She needed him to heal, but she didn't want him to get too close to her. Knowing that she would eventually wake up, John decided to take her out of the house to the porch.
After he had taken care of the mother wolf and she was feeling better, he went in search of the puppies. But where could John even begin to find a den with wolf pups. The cubs couldn't be too far away, for a she-wolf doesn't stray far from her cubs.
Due to his background in the Canadian military, he had many survival and. . .
track knowledge. He would have to use all his skills to save the babies. He searched the area for clues and finally found what he was looking for.
After a long search, something caught my eye. It was hidden, but there was an opening to a hole in the floor. Hopefully this was the cave he was looking for.
The only problem now was getting the wolf pups to come out. They were trained to stay indoors until they heard their mother, even if it could mean their deaths. John was determined to do his best.
He tried his best wolf call. Nothing happened. He tried again.
But still nothing. He was just wondering if it was dangerous to go into the cave when suddenly a small, tiny wolf came out. He howled from hunger.
That was probably one of the main reasons he was willing to take the risk of coming out without hearing his mother's voice. After the first baby came out, the others soon followed. Knowing he could never carry all four, he carefully placed them all in a pouch and sealed it.
John had to check if there were any other hatchlings in the den. Sticking your head in a wolf's den is never a good idea. But the thought that he might have left one behind was unacceptable.
He had to make sure. He lay flat on his stomach and crawled inside. Luckily it wasn't as deep as he had imagined.
The man searched the cave, but there were no other wolves to be seen. He could leave the area with a clear conscience knowing there were no puppies left behind. He grabbed a bag of puppies and went back to their mother.
It felt surreal carrying a pouch of wolf pups. The mother animal must have heard her soft whimpering as he approached. Because she started crying.
He carefully put the puppies down and let them one by one to their mother. He hoped his scent on the puppies wouldn't cause the mother to reject them. The puppies recognized their mother and all ran straight towards her.
She sniffed her, and John held his breath for a moment. Would she recognize them? The sturdy adventurer got emotional when she started licking the puppies.
She lay down and soon the puppies were drinking merrily. The wolf had been with John for a while now and she must be hungry and thirsty. He brought her some pieces of meat and threw them to her piece by piece.
She might not trust him, but she gladly accepted the food he gave her. She had no other choice. John had to go out every day to get fish or meat for the wolves and firewood , and he left his door open for the wolf pups to go in to warm themselves.
But he didn't expect that they would invite friends to visit. But that's exactly what happened. When John came back one day, he experienced a great shock.
His garden was swarming with a whole pack of wolves. They had come to check on the wolf. It must have been her family looking for the wolf and her cubs.
But he wasn't prepared for meeting a pack of wolves in his garden. For a moment, John froze in fear. The puppies came running to him and were so happy to see their friend.
But the big wolves all turned, snarled, and stood with their hackles raised. It looked like they were ready to attack. Then suddenly one of the wolves gave a loud bark.
It was the she-wolf that John had helped. As soon as she barked, all of the other wolves backed away and seemed completely relaxed. Still, John did not underestimate the danger of a wolf pack.
He quickly went into his hut and locked the door behind him. After a few more days, John could see that the wolf was getting better and better. Soon she was able to get up and even walk around a few days later.
After a few more days, one morning she barked at her puppies and they all got up and followed her. John understood that they would go away forever. He never saw the pack, the wolf, or the cubs again.
But he knew that four little wolf cubs and a she-wolf owed him their lives. If this story touched you as much as it did us, you should watch this video. A wolf finds a baby after an accident.
