reason Gandalf holds a special place in my heart possibly as my favorite character in all of toan's works so let's begin our journey by rewinding back to the very beginning of time to understand Gander we must first first know what he truly is one of the Angelic beings known as the Maya these Maya are Divine Spirits created by uvar the equivalent of God in toan's universe iluvatar created to orders of divine Spirits The Valor and the Maya The Valor considered the Lord s and queens were a group of 15 although the dark lord melker after

his evil Deeds was no longer counted among them below the Valor were the meire far more numerous and serving Under The Valor this is where our Beloved gandal fenters the story in his early existence he was known as a Lauren not gandor youngo Lauren served under several Valor including manui the king of the Vala his wife V the queen of the Valor lauan the master of visions and dreams and nienna Lauren's sister known as the Lady of Pity and mourning while not much is known about a Lauren's early years a passage from the account of

a Lauren a Maya of Manu whom we know as gandal an interesting point about these five is that initially only rumo and alatar volunteered however man we knew he wanted Olen to go as well due to the love for the Eldar that still burned within him Olen hesitated feeling to weak to challenge saon and fearing him but this only convinced Manu further that auren was indeed the right choice and so around the year 1,000 of the third age olorin arrived in Middle Earth he departed Valen and arrived at the gray Havens also known as mithlond

where he was met by certain the ship right and glor findle serin a highly esteemed s sindar and the master of the gray Havens since the second age possessed the gift of foresight he honored Olin with one of the three Elven rings of power naria recognizing his true potential despite his humble appearance glorfindel one of the mightiest elves to walk Middle Earth had been re-embodied after fighting a balog and sent back on a mission akin to that of the estar around the same time as the blue Wizards arrival in the year 1600 of the second

age unlike Saron and radagast Olen did not establish a permanent home in Middle Earth as recounted in the unfinished Tales he was named myth Ronda by the elves meaning the gray Pilgrim for he dwelt nowhere permanently gathered neither wealth nor followers but traveled throughout the Westlands from gond to angmar and from Linden to L lauan aiding all in need warm and eager in spirit his demeanor was enhanced by the ring naria he opposed saon countering the fire that devours and wastes with the fire that Kindles hope and support in times of distress though his joy

and Swift wrath were veiled in garments as great as Ash only those who knew him well glimpsed the inner flame marry and kind to the young and simple quick to Sharp speech and rebuke Folly he sought neither power nor praise and thus far and wide Gandalf was beloved among all who were not themselves proud he journeyed tirelessly on foot leaning on a staff and was called by the men of the north Gandalf meaning elf of the wand for they mistakenly believed him to be of Elish kind as he would sometimes work wonders among them particularly

enjoying the beauty of Fire yet the Marvels he wrought were mosty for mirth and Delight Desiring that none should hold him in All or take his counsel out of fear here we see how Gandalf got the name we know him best by but this was not his only name the elves called him Mitha the Great Pilgrim to the dwarves he was faren in the South he was known as incanus in Rohan they called him grahan and when riding upon shadowax he was the white Rider these many names show just how much gandol loved to travel

and wander being known by different names throughout Middle Earth after being in Middle Earth for about 100 years gandor and the other estori discovered an evil Shadow growing within the forest once known as Greenwood the great now called merkwood specifically it was within the Fortress of do gur in in the southern part of the forest some believed this evil was the return of the nazgol but gandal feared it could be worse that it might be sore on himself initially nothing was done about this and over the next couple of hundred years the evil grew the

witch King leader of the nazgol built a fortress in AAR to challenge Anor Orcs multiplied rapidly in the Misty Mountains while both kazad diim and miners ethil fell under Shadow according to appendix B at the end of The Lord of the Rings it took until the year 2063 for Gand to finally investigate do G himself Gandalf's appearance caused Sauron to flee but at this point Gandalf was not able to confirm the true identity of this evil seeing it only as the Necromancer with saon having left this marked the beginning of a period known as the

watchful piece a 400e period during which saon hid being to worried to challenge the wise headon during this time he chose to corrupt men in the East to grow his power more quietly despite this it did not go completely unnoticed but nothing sign ific was done until saon returned to do gor in 2460 now more powerful than before to counter this a group known as the white Council was formed uniting the forces of the West against the Shadow the council's known members included Gandalf gallad Saron Eland and San along with other unnamed Lords of the

Eldar soromon was appointed the leader of the council although Galadriel initially wished for Gandalf to lead however gandol declined preferring not to set down routs and to continue knew wandering as he wished with little decided at the first meeting Gandalf resumed his travels during these years Gandalf visited many places and eventually came across the hobbits in the Shire quickly befriending them this proved fortunate for the hobbits as Gandalf aided them during The Long Winter in 2,758 here gandal first witnessed The Bravery and willpower of this small race which would later play a crucial role in

his plans around a 100 years later Gandalf sought the dwarf King frin the second of the Lonely Mountain who had disappeared while camping under the eaves of merkwood thin had been captured and taken to Dole Gul where he was tortured by soron for the Dwarven ring of power he possessed initially Gandalf had no success locating him during his travels believed to be after 2,840 5 Gandalf ventured through the abandoned realm of kadim entering from the East and exiting through the doors of juren on the western side this journey later proved significant during the fellowship's quest

a few years later in 2850 Gandalf returned to stole gur in secret and found thin in the pits more importantly Gandalf discovered that the Necromancer was indeed saon not one of the nazor he escaped and informed the white Council of his findings urging them to attack Sauron before he could regain more strength and find the one ring however soromon the council's leader advised watching and waiting instead of acting rashly believing the One Ring lost in the onine long ago many agreed with soron unaware of his true intentions for suggesting this as the years passed Gandalf

grew wary of events elsewhere he learned that SM the dragon had claimed airor and destroyed the town of Dale leading him to worry that saon might try to team up with the dragon to strengthen his forces and gain control over the northern passes Gandalf sought a way to disrupt this potential Alliance and it was at this moment that gandal received convenient word that the exiled dwarf King Thoren Oaken Shield was hatching a plan to retake the Lonely Mountain fate would then bring the two together one night in the year to, 941 as they both happened

to be staying in Brie they spoke and it was decided they would travel together as their paths aligned thus the plan for the quest of arabba was conceived not long after gandal arrived at bag end with a company of dwarves and persuaded The Hobbit bilber baggin to join their Quest as their berglar though it took some convincing Gandalf succeeded he accompanied thoren's company at least until they reached rivendel during the early part of their Quest Gandalf played a crucial role he saved them from trolls and acquired his sword glaming he guided the them through the

Misty Mountains killed the Great Goblin and led the dwarves to safety even striking up a friendship with the Great Eagle gu here after healing a wound gu here suffered while trying to save the company Gandalf's assistance didn't stopped there he led them to the house of Baron and there he parted ways with the company it was then that an emergency meeting of the white Council was called Gandalf knew he had to convince the council to attack Dole gulo and this time he even swayed Solomon's mind they attacked Dole gor driving saon out and forcing him

to flee back to Mordor with this Quest complete Gandalf returned to the dwarves and Bilbo he had heard their path through merkwood was challenging and that they had been imprisoned by the wood elves by the time he reached the area the company had escaped arrived at araba and were preparing for an attack by the lake men and the wood elves Gandalf heard how Bard had killed Smog and now he and thrand sought Gandalf's help in reasoning with Thorin just before the battle between the dwarves elves and Men was about to commence Gandalf managed to intervene

he warned them that the forces of ORS and Wars would attack and that they should unite against the common enemy he successfully convinced them to fight together just in time for the Battle of the Five Armies after the battle Gandalf journeyed with Bilbo back to the Shire stopping by beans and then rivendel to discuss all that had transpired with il Rong once back in the Shire Gandalf confirmed that Hobbits especially the baggin's were worth special attention he even visited Bilbo again with the dwarf Balon in future years bringing news of the happenings in araba and

Dale there were a few years of quiet before saon declared himself openly in Mordor when this happened the white Council met for the last time in 2,953 to discuss what to do about the rings of power at this meeting saran's jealousy of Gandalf reached its peak soromon began sending spies to watch Gandalf leading him to discover the existence of Hobbits and the Shire noting Gandalf's interest in these people consequently Saron started keeping a close watch over Brie and the surrounding areas around this time gandal learned of gollum's mission to find Bilbo baggin and reclaim his

precious ring however gandal did not give Gollum the attention he warranted as he later discussed with Frodo in the shadow of the past chapter of The Lord of the Rings the wood elves tracked golum first an easy task for them as His Trail was still fresh though they never caught him rumors of him spread through merkwood Dreadful Tales arose even among beasts and birds the Woodman spoke of a new Terror a ghost that drank blood climbed trees to find nests and crept into holes to find the young a mysterious creature slipped Through the Windows seeking

cradles its Trail led to the Western Edge of merkwood but there it turned Southward Vanishing from the sight of the wood elves lost and forgotten I made a grave mistake yes Frodo Gandalf confessed not the first mistake though I fear it may prove the worst I let the matter rest I let him go I had many other things on my mind and I still trusted San's Council in the year 2,956 Gandalf crossed pths with a significant figure Aragon son of Aran and heir of Isela their bond grew quickly as they United in their quest to

overthrow the dark lord soron during this period Gandalf also befriended phir son of denur during his visits to gond gandal imparted much knowledge to phir much to denifer displeasure who resented his son becoming the pupil of a wizard these were years of extensive travels for Gandalf who visited many lands across Western Middle Earth the Shire remained one of his most frequent destinations where he kept a watchful eye on the ever young Bilbo and his younger cousin Frodo Baggins who seemed much like Bilbo in spirit Gandalf's thoughts often drifted back to Bilbo especially to the magical

ring he found during the quest of arabba and the uncharacteristic way Bilbo had lied about its Discovery this led Gandalf to keep an even closer watch on him in the year 3001 Gandalf returned to Bag End for Bilbo's 111th birthday and farewell party as Bilbo prepared to leave the Shire Gandalf persuaded him to leave the ring behind his suspicions about the ring being one of the magical rings of power grew stronger he warned Frodo to never use the ring and to keep it safe and secret before setting off into the wild to seek answers from

the creature Golem Gandalf sought the help of Aragon and his fellow Rangers of the north with Aragon aiding him directly and the Rangers guarding the shire's borders this hunt for golum spanned several years during which Gandalf only occasionally returned to check on Frodo always under the cover of night during one such visit to miners tith to study ancient records gandal found iseler scroll revealing that Bilbo's ring might indeed Be the One Ring shortly thereafter he received word from Aragon who had successfully located Gollum Gandolf traveled to merkwood to interrogate Gollum discovering with great fear that

golum had revealed the names of the Shia and baggin to soron during his capture in barad with haste Gandalf returned to the Shire it was April of 38 when he finally confirmed to Frodo that the ring was indeed sauron's one ring he advised Frodo to leave for Riven as soon as possible which Frodo decided to do after his next birthday to avoid suspicion gandal stayed with Frodo for a couple of months before leaving troubled by news of an impending war in gond and the growing shadow in the [Music] East he promised Frodo he would return

before his birthday so they could travel together but fate had other plans on his journey Gandalf encountered rigas the brown who brought urgent news from Saron about the nazgol searching for the Shire Gandalf headed for Eisen guard to meet soromon but first stopped at Brie to leave a message for Frodo with the inkeeper baman buter who unfortunately forgot to deliver it at eard Gandolf discovered San's true intentions refusing to join him Gandalf was imprisoned at top or than he was rescued by guir the Great Eagle who carried him to Rohan there Gandalf acquired shadowfax the

chief of the mirrors and rode swiftly towards the Shire upon his arrival Gandalf learned that Frodo had already left as he had not returned in time he also heard of Black Riders in the area and feared for Frodo Gandalf hurried to Brie where he discovered that BBA had failed to send his letter despite this Frodo and his friends had somehow Fallen under Aragon's watch after a night's rest Gandalf made for weathertop seeking a vantage point to observe the surrounding land however that night he was attacked by the nazgol in a fierce battle of light and

Flame gandor managed to drive them off leaving his mark on the stones before heading north pursued by four of the Nazar Gandalf's Only Hope was to reach rivendel ahead of Frodo and his companions as they approached the Elven stronghold G s helped to Ron cause a flood to drown the pursuing nazgol allowing the Hobbits to reach safety after Frodo healed from his wounds ilon convened a council to decide their plan for destroying the One Ring Gandalf joined the Fellowship of the Ring as one of the nine Walkers and was chosen as their leader their first

task was to cross the Misty Mountains avoiding Eisen guard when a terrible storm thwarted this plan they reluctantly chose the path through Mora despite Gandalf's previous exit through the doors of juren it took him some time to remember how to enter eventually they succeeded and navigated the Labyrinth of tunnels and halls in the chamber of Mazo the fellowship discovered that Bowen and his party had failed to reclaim the kingdom of their ancestors their presence alerted the Orcs of Moria leading to an attack the fellowship survived the initial assault and fled towards the Eastern Gate however

their escape was halted by a greater threat jiren's Bane a bow Rog of morath pursued them at the bridge of kadim Gandalf confronted the Bal standing on the narrow span he raised his staff and sword declaring you shall not pass the bow Rog Advanced and a fierce battle ensued Gandalf shattered the bridge beneath the bow Rob sending it into the abyss as it fell it lashed out with its whip pulling Gandalf into the darkness fly you fools he cried as he disappeared into the depth the fellowship stricken with grief fled Moria and sought refuge in

L lauan where they mourned gandal and found solace with Lady Galadriel and the elves little did they know Gandalf's story did not end in Moria Gandolf battled the bow Rod through the Deep places of the world ascending to the peak of zil zel where he finally defeated it this ordal transformed Gandalf who returned to Middle Earth as Gandalf the White more powerful and authoritative than before rescued by gu here the eagle gandor was brought to L lauan there he was welcomed by the etheral Lady Galadriel who dressed him in new garments and gifted him a

gleaming staff she shared news of the fellowship's trials revealing that Frodo and Sam had parted ways from the others Gandalf understanding he could not Aid them directly resolved to seek out Aragon legalis and gimly who were on a quest to rescue Mary and Pippin upon reuniting with his friends the Ford journeyed to the golden Halls of adoras there Gandalf freed King thedan from the malevolent influence of kma worm Tang urging him to prepare for the looming war heeding gandolf's council king theodan led his people to The Fortress of Helm's Deep their safest Refuge meanwhile Gandalf

rode the Swift Shadows to gather rohan's scattered forces led by the Valiant uren brand in the dark of night just as Helms Deep scened on the brink of collapse Gandolf and uren Brand's forces arrived their timely intervention shattered The Siege and saved the Defenders with San's Army defeated gandal turned his attention to Eisen guard where the ants aided by Mary and Pippin had laid waste to San's Fortress Gandalf sought to reason with Salamon hoping to gain wisdom from him but the Fallen wizard spurned his offer in a final Act of defiance Gandalf cast Saran out

of their order breaking his staff and stripping him of Power with San no longer a threat Gandalf's thoughts turned to gond he foresaw an imminent attack and urged King theodan to rise to gonda's Aid taking Pippen with him gandf hastened to miners tyf the White City where they were met with coold suspicion by denifer the ruling Steward as Gandalf had foreseen sauron's Legions led by the witch king of angmar besieged miners terf gandal stood as a Beacon of Hope rallying the city's Defenders against the onslaught yet the Relentless assaults at the lower levels of Blaze

and when the gates were breached Gandalf alone stood to confront the witch King their confrontation was interrupted by the horns of Rohan heralding King theoden's arrival the witch King turned to face this new threat but gandal found no respit Pippen came to him with ding news denifer driven mad by grief intended to burn himself and his son faramir alive racing Against Time kandol saved faramir though Dena perished in the flame as the battle raged on the combined forces of Rohan and Aragon's Army from the southern thiefs broke the siege driving sauron's minions from the field

Gandalf's leadership was pivotal yet there was no time to rest knowing the war was far from Over the remaining leaders elected gandal to guide them through the final stages of their struggle understanding that Frodo's success was their only hope Gandalf devised a daring plan to distract soram leading their armies to the black gate of Mordor they confronted the Dark Lord's Emissary who taunted them with Frodo's captured mythal vest refusing to surrender Gandalf and his allies prepared for a final desperate stand their R worked as the battle reached its Zenith saurons I turned inward failing to

notice Frodo's approach to Mount Doom in a twist of fate the one ring was destroyed not by Frodo's hand but by Golems fall into the fiery CM with the Ring's destruction Barada sauron's Dark Tower began to crumble Gandalf's mission was complete and peace began to spread across the land bringing a new dawn to Middle Earth the nascal disintegrated into the Shadows of the Night leaving Soro on as a mere wisp of the dark power he once wielded in the twilight's Embrace The Majestic Eagle guir swooped down to Aid the wise gandal carrying him through the

Serene night air in search of the resilient Hobbits Frodo and Sam the joy that illuminated Gandalf's heart upon discovering the Hobbits was as radiant as the first light of dawn with great relief and happiness the two Brave Hobbits were saved their perilous Quest had concluded in Triumph Gandalf's Mission reached its culmination and so he journeyed back with the Hobbits to the edges of the Shire there he departed to spend time in the company of his old friend Tom bombardo for 2 years the Knight whispered secrets of their conversations though what truly transpired remains a mystery

wrapped in the night's Embrace when Gandalf emerged from this interlude it was to escort Frodo board the white ship destined for the undying lands as the etheral vessel sailed Westward Gandalf join Frodo Bilbo iland and galadrial on this final voyage leaving behind the familiar shores of Middle Earth the wizard known as Gandalf returned to his true form the mayor named olorin thus the tale of this Divine Spirit reaches its gentle conclusion like the last star Fading Into the predawn sky and so our story to Finds Its end carried away on The Whispers of the night
