Autonomous driving, everything you need to know about autonomous cars Hey Engineering Lovers, my name is Igor Felipe and today autonomous driving is the new goal of the automobile industry. Many companies have started their research on different levels of autonomous driving. Typically, the term "autonomous driving" refers to self-driving cars or other transportation systems that operate with varying levels of assistance from a human driver, including none.
Automakers including Tesla, Volvo, Mercedes, Audi and others are working towards Level 5 autonomous driving. Progressively, automakers are adding more autonomous features to their vehicles. The goal of some is to manufacture vehicles that can operate without any human intervention.
But it is important to understand that autonomous driving has levels of automation. But after all, what are these levels of automation? Let's start with Level 0, which is the level without automation Today, only the oldest cars on the road today belong to this category.
The human driver is responsible for all aspects of dynamic driving tasks. The car may be enhanced by warning or intervention systems, but the human driver has all the control to make the decisions. At Level 1 we have Drver Assistance In a vehicle with Level 1 autonomy, the car can control an element of the driving process, such as the direction and even the speed of the vehicle, while the human driver has full responsibility for monitoring the road.
and take control if necessary. If your car has those lane-keep assistants or adaptive cruise control, it's part of Tier 1 autonomous vehicles. Within Tier 2 we have Partial automation.
This is now common in most new vehicles. At this level, on-board computers can control several functions at the same time, such as steering, acceleration and also deceleration. The human driver, however, performs the remaining aspects of dynamic driving tasks, such as being responsible for changing lanes, checking for hazards, responding to traffic signals, and turning.
Cars with lane changing mode, automatic parking and driver monitoring features can already be considered at level 2. Moving to Level 3 we arrive at Conditional Automation This level will likely come as standard on new vehicles soon. Tier 3 vehicles will be highly automated and will include a mode that allows the vehicle to control all aspects of driving, although the driver must be ready to respond or intervene.
The vehicle's Automated Steering System can monitor the driving environment by controlling acceleration, braking and steering. That is, at this level, the car can already take full or partial control of the vehicle through technology. In some cars, even with the human being driving, he can make decisions to avoid potholes, avoid objects and even take control to avoid a collision.
Within Level 4 are fully autonomous vehicles under controlled conditions . The system controls all aspects of driving tasks in geofenced areas. This includes situations where the human driver does not respond properly when asked to intervene.
It will be genuine driving, although a driver will likely still be needed outside certain areas. Both Ford and Volvo are working on Level 4 autonomy. And lastly Level 5 which is Total Automation The Automated Drving System is in full time operation everywhere.
All aspects of dynamic driving tasks in all road and environmental conditions are autonomous. Automakers have yet to set a timeline for when fully autonomous cars will hit the market. With a level 5 car, you will be able to select your destination, rest and relax as the car takes you safely.
Or you can use the time efficiently to prepare for a meeting, make calls, respond to emails, or take a nap while your car drives. To talk about vehicle automation, we have to talk about tesla, which was one of the pioneers in the development of automatic driving and full autonomous driving capabilities. safety when operating a vehicle.
Cruise control reduces your overall workload as a driver when used properly. Eight external cameras and advanced visual processing are included in all new Tesla vehicles to provide an extra measure of security. Full autonomous driving capability, enhanced Cruise Control and Autopilot are all designed to be used by vigilant drivers who keep their hands on the wheel and are ready to take control at a moment's notice.
While these features are intended to develop its capability over time, currently active systems do not make the vehicle autonomous. Every new Tesla comes with Autopilot as standard equipment, depending on when the car was made. Two Autopilot packages are available for customers who received their vehicles without Autopilot: full autonomous driving capability and enhanced Autopilot.
But there is a question, which Tesla drives alone? Unfortunately, none. But Igor, I'm tired of watching videos on the internet where the car takes the driver and passengers from point A to point B completely autonomously.
Well, I've seen those videos too, but there's a very important detail. It still requires an attentive driver, and from time to time, the car will require you to put your hand on the steering wheel, to make sure you're really there. And no, if you think it's okay to sleep or leave the driver's seat while the car is in autonomous mode, know that the system still needs human support to perform its analysis.
Since it takes a fully focused driver to operate Autopilot, a practical driver-assistance technology, that doesn't make a Tesla a fully autonomous vehicle. Autopilot's name and advertising caused some confusion, with some drivers assuming they no longer needed to put their hands on the steering wheel or pay attention. In 2020, Germany banned Tesla from claiming its cars were "autonomous".
But, Tesla Vision uses the company's cutting-edge camera system and neural network processing to enable Autopilot and associated features as of April 2022 on Model 3 and Model Y vehicles made for the European and Middle Eastern markets. . This camera system gives passengers a sense of their surroundings that a solo driver would not normally have.
A powerful on-board computer processes this information in milliseconds to help make driving safer and less demanding. But the point is that you will still need to maintain control and responsibility of the vehicle, and most importantly, keep your hands on the steering wheel at all times before activating cruise control. If you do not follow the recommendations and follow the car's visual and audible alert system, you will simply lose access to the use of Autopilot by the car itself.
That is, if you do shit, the car will punish you by prohibiting you from activating the autonomous driving system. Any cruise control function can be overridden at any time by driving, stepping on the brakes or disengaging the cruise control stalk. But what are the limitations of autopilot?
Autopilot performance can be affected by several events, which can prevent the system from working as we want. Poor visibility, bright light, mud blocking one of the cameras, and even obstruction by objects mounted on the vehicle, can cause the system to malfunction or not work at all. To ensure that the autopilot hardware can provide the most accurate information possible, it is very important to keep the cameras and sensors clean and free of obstructions or damage.
And technology keeps improving , for example, Enhanced Autopilot that offers Auto Lane Change, which is responsible for changing lanes by itself, and also Autopark, which helps you park your car parallel or perpendicular with a single touch. Or, you can move your car with your cell phone in case someone stops at your door and prevents you from entering. And you, do you want to have an autonomous car?
Have you ever driven one? Leave it here in the comments that I want to know I'm going to leave two videos here on the side that you might also like and that complement the subject, so be sure to check it out.
