Before we pray, let's first take a moment to listen to God's word and then we'll pray together. Hebrews 12:1 says, "Therefore, we also, since we are surrounded by so great a cloud of witnesses, let us lay aside every weight [music] and the sin which so easily ens snares us, and let us run with endurance the race that is set before us. The line, "Let us lay aside every weight and the sin which so easily ens snares us," tells us that we must deliberately throw off whatever hinders our walk with God.
It is a call to examine our lives and remove anything that keeps us from running freely toward Jesus Christ. Every believer is in this race, but not everyone runs well. Some start strong but lose momentum because of distractions or hidden burdens.
Others never find their stride because they are carrying unnecessary weight. This weight can be habits, relationships, attitudes or fears that hold us back from spiritual progress. You see, not all weights are sinful, but even good things can become hindrances [music] if they take God's place in your heart.
The word of God in 1 Corinthians 10 verse 23 reminds us, "All things are lawful for me, but not all things are helpful. Some things are not sinful, but they slow you down. They drain your spiritual strength and distract your attention.
That's why scripture urges us to lay them aside. Now take a moment to reflect. What weight are you carrying?
What habit keeps pulling you backward every time you try to move forward? Maybe it's bitterness that you haven't released. Maybe it's pride that makes it hard to admit when you're wrong.
Maybe it's fear that keeps you from trusting God fully. Or perhaps it's the company you keep, the friends who influence your decisions, the voices that shape your thoughts. The Bible says in 1 Corinthians 15:33, "Do not be deceived.
Evil company corrupts good habits. The people you spend time with can either push you closer to God or pull you away from him. If your friendships are pulling you into compromise or sin, it's time to make a change.
It's [music] not just people that can hold you down. It's also what you consume. The music you listen to, the shows you watch, the content you read, all these things feed your spirit in some way.
If what you're feeding on doesn't honor God, it will weaken your faith. Philippians 4:8 [music] gives us guidance. Whatever is true, whatever is noble, whatever is right, whatever is pure, whatever is lovely, whatever is admirable, if anything is excellent or praiseworthy, think about such things.
And yes, even money can become a burden when it becomes an idol. The Bible warns us in 1 Timothy 6:10, "For the love of money is a root of all kinds of evil. " "The pursuit of wealth is not wrong, but when it consumes your heart, it becomes a weight that drags you down spiritually.
" When Jesus spoke in Matthew 18 8 and 9, he said, "If your hand or foot causes you to sin, cut it off and cast it from you. " It is better for you to enter into life lame or maimed rather than having two hands or two feet to be cast into everlasting fire. And if your eye causes you to sin, pluck it out and cast it from you.
This is a serious call to spiritual separation. Jesus wasn't suggesting physical harm, but was teaching the necessity of removing anything that leads you into sin, no matter how precious or comfortable it seems. In other words, if it causes you to stumble, cut it out of your life.
If it tempts you to drift away from God, distance yourself from it. You cannot run the race of faith effectively while holding on to things that God has asked you to release. You can't expect to grow spiritually if you refuse to let go of the very things that keep you bound.
Galatians 5:7 says, "You were running a good race. Who cut in on you to keep you from obeying the truth? " Many believers start well but slow down because they refuse to lay aside the weights.
The Christian life requires endurance. It's a marathon. You must keep your eyes fixed on Jesus.
The very next verse, Hebrews 12:2, tells us how looking unto Jesus, the author and finisher of our faith. He is both the starting line and the finish line. He gives you the strength to begin and the grace to finish.
When life gets heavy, when trials come, and when your strength feels gone, remember that you are not running alone. God is with you. His spirit empowers you.
His word [music] guides you. Isaiah 40:31 declares, "But those who wait on the Lord shall renew their strength. They shall mount up with wings like eagles.
They shall run and not be weary. They shall [music] walk and not faint. So take heart.
If you've stumbled, get back up. If you've slowed down, start running again. God's grace can lift you where you've fallen.
His mercy can restore what you've lost. Lay aside the weight. Turn from sin.
Let go of what doesn't belong in your journey and run with endurance, with faith, with your eyes fixed on Jesus. Now, let's take a moment to pray together. Dear Lord Jesus, you are the King of Kings and the Lord of Lords.
You are my savior, my redeemer, and my greatest friend. There is no one like you. Your mercy never ends and your love has no measure.
Today I come before you with a sincere heart asking you to fill me with the power and presence of the Holy Spirit. Let your spirit open my eyes to see what I could not see on my own. Help me to recognize the things in my life that are pulling me backward.
the habits that are holding me captive and the relationships that are slowing down my walk with you. Lord, you see every part of my heart. Nothing is hidden from you.
If there is anything in me that grieves you, reveal it. Show me what is hindering my progress in faith. Open my eyes, Lord, to see everything that stands between me and you.
Help me to let go of anything that keeps me from living in obedience to your word. I surrender my heart, my plans, and my desires to you. I give you permission to work in me as you please.
If there are people in my life who pull me away from you, who discourage my faith or who speak doubt instead of truth, remove me from such company. Lord, lead me into the fellowship of those who love you and seek to walk in righteousness. If I have allowed anything in my life that distracts me from you, take it away.
If my heart has been consumed with the pursuit of wealth and worldly success, please realign my desires. I do not want to chase riches more than I chase your presence. Help me to seek first the kingdom of God and your righteousness.
King Jesus, your word in Matthew 18:es 8 and 9 says, "If your hand or foot causes you to sin, cut it off and cast it from you. [music] And if your eye causes you to sin, pluck it out and cast it from you. For it is better to enter life lame or maimed rather than having two hands or two feet to be cast into the everlasting fire.
" Lord, this truth humbles me. You are reminding me that I must deal seriously with sin. Have mercy on me and give me the courage to remove from my life anything that causes me to stumble.
Give me strength to walk away from every temptation that pulls me away from you. Father, for every desire that does not glorify you, take it from my heart. For every plan that is rooted in selfish ambition, remove it from my path.
Replace my desires with yours. Let my heart long for what pleases you. As it is written in Job 11:14, "If iniquity is in your hand, put it far away, and let not injustice dwell in your tents.
[snorts] Lord, if sin is in my hand, help me to cast it far from me. Let there be no trace of wrongdoing in my life, purify my motives and cleanse my thoughts. " Your words in Psalm 51:es 1:3 says, "Have mercy upon me, oh God, according to your loving kindness, according to the multitude of your tender mercies.
Blot out my transgressions. Wash me thoroughly from my iniquity and cleanse me from my sin. Lord, wash me clean.
Remove the guilt of my past and the stains of my sin. Thank you for your loving kindness and for your unfailing mercy. As I strive to walk in obedience to your word, strengthen me to stand firm.
Let your grace be sufficient for me in times of weakness. Help me to resist temptation and to overcome the schemes of the enemy. You said in James 4:7, "Submit yourselves therefore to God.
" Resist the devil and he will flee from you. I submit myself completely to you, Lord. Strengthen me by your spirit to resist the enemy and to stand victorious in faith.
My greatest desire is to run the good race of faith. I want to live a life that honors you. Your word says in Hebrews 12:es 1 and 2, therefore, we also, since we are surrounded by so great a cloud of witnesses, let us lay aside every weight and the sin which so easily ens snares us.
and let us run with endurance the race that is set before us, looking unto Jesus, the author and a finisher of our faith, who for the joy that was set before him, endured the cross, despising the shame, and has sat down at the right hand of the throne of God. Lord, I want to lay aside every distraction, every fear, every burden that tries to slow me down. Help me to run this race with endurance, with my eyes fixed only on you.
Let nothing in this world compete for my attention or affection. Let my focus remain on Jesus, the author and finisher of my faith. You endured the cross for me.
Now help me to carry mine with faith and perseverance. When I grow tired, renew my strength. Lord, when I feel weary, lift me up.
When I stumble, help me to rise again. When I doubt, remind me that you are near. I choose to trust you, Lord.
Keep me from the things that weigh down my spirit and fill me with your peace. I thank you for hearing my prayer and for giving me strength to follow you. May my life bring honor to your name.
