a application of AI these days as developers is too narrow we think of it in terms of helping us code faster helping us find Solutions faster and there're actually many who reject it completely because it writes bad code well in either situation you're severely limiting yourself in 2024 20125 and Beyond you need to be thinking of your AI usage in a much bigger context if you view AI solely in relation to the code you WR you're already behind we're in a tough economy I don't think this will stay this way much longer as we begin
to reverse course here but we all know it's not the easiest task to land a tech job now we're tweaking resumés applying for listings writing cover letters and really we're doing it all ineffectively why is this well because the other side the hiring side is utilizing AI to quickly sift you out of the pile big companies are quickly embracing this technology to help them automatically screen resumés and applications in matching candidates to job requirements more efficiently these AI systems can parse through thousands of applications quickly identifying candid Cates with the most relevant skills and experience
for programming roles and this saves recruiters significant time in the initial screening process AI being used for skills assessments they can automatically grade coding challenges and provide insights into a programmer's abilities across different languages and Frameworks and there're even chat Bots being used now to handle initial candidate interactions and can even conduct preliminary technical screenings through conversational interfaces like it'll ask you questions and hit record as you give your answers no human is needed in the hiring team can watch it later after AI generates an analysis of you and if it hasn't given you the
big thumbs down recruiters are using AI writing assistance to craft tailored messages to qualified leads on LinkedIn AI can take data from past hires of a company and predict which new candidates are likely to better succeed at that company and can then identify high potential candidates and it makes sense in this economy as they're probably getting hundreds and hundreds of applicants are having to sift through hundreds and hundreds of LinkedIn profiles to identify the right candidates or potential candidates it's just business you can say that it's inhuman it's not fair it's not right but the
technology is here and people are using it but here's the kicker and this is the point I want to make in this video they are utilizing technology AI technology to make their jobs easier you are not you are complaining about Ai and refusing to use it and in doing so you're shooting yourself in the foot if they are playing the game on their end should you not be playing the game on your end you can't answer that in the negative therefore there are certain approaches you could change today to give you an edge up on
your end and that's what I want to talk about in today's video I'm going to discuss resumés cover letters applying for jobs and then interview practice all being 10x by combining them with AI and let's start things off with resumés cover letters and job applications and just a quick note before we get started enrollment in my coding Community is open again we just moved it over to the school platform and this is going to be the central hub for all trainings courses coding challenges in conversation we have over a 100 members now and lots of
weekly events and discussions there will be a link below in the description for more information on that now let's get started now to be truthful I'm not agreeing that I particularly like where things are headed actually it's more the speed and the relational aspects that I'm most concerned about but new tools like the oneclick apply are bad sure they're good for you to apply in one click but that also means hundreds of others can one click just as easily even if they don't really think themselves a fit now you see why recruiters need those tools
but when it comes comes to this whole job process AI can really help you out and here are a few ideas first let's start with cover letters I think you should always submit a cover letter but you should never write one yourself again this is unproductive instead go to Chad gbt upload your resume paste in the entire text of the job description you're applying for impr prompt AI to write you a cover letter based on your resume which includes your work history skill set Etc in the entire text of the job listing and it will
generate you a very specific cover letter for that job and of course tweak it a little bit before you submit it as it may come off a bit robotic here's an example so here in Chad GPT I uploaded my rume and we're not going to talk about RS right now but I asked it to give me some recommendations on my resume but down here since they had my resume in its memory I found a job on LinkedIn for the company elastic and I copied and pasted the entire job description here and I said I am
applying for a job at elastic here is their listing can you write a cover letter for me based on my resume and the job listing description so I pasted it all right here and here's what it gave me so down here I have your name address city state if you need all that hiring manager at elastic dear hiring manager and you can read this I'm excited to apply for the developer Advocate position my experience aligns well with elastics mission of fostering and engaged Community which came right off the job listing and then it goes through
my resume in my most recent role is develop a relations engineer blah blah blah prior to that I was an SRE in addition to my technical expertise and so forth so it takes my information from my resume and then information from the job listing and creates a nice cover letter again you want to tweak this but for the most part I think it's great they're using AI you should be using AI so again never write a cover letter nobody has time for that next let's talk about your resume so you want to upload your resume
and ask GPT to give you suggestions and adjustments based on the job you're applying for you can paste in the job description of the job you're looking at like I just did upload your resum and ask AI to help you improve that resume in fact you want to ask AI to make your resumé ATS friendly if it isn't then you're starting off in the negative compared to the resumés submitted that are ATS compliant the days of not caring what's happening on the other end and just shooting the same resume out to everybody is over you
need to educate yourself on what is going on so what is ATS well before we look at that and how to make sure your resume as ATS compliant I want to share one tool with you today that does all of these things in one place I tried to find a tool that we could use as applicants to give us an edge in all things and in finding the tool and talking with the team at jobright they offer to sponsor today's video so here's a quick word on them job right is an AI job search co-pilot

I'm targeting and Orion their AI chat assistant will even write a cover letter for the job I'm interested in that's right you'll never have to manually write a cover letter again and if that's not enough jobright AI makes it easy to connect with company insiders and craft personalized LinkedIn or email messages helping you get referrals and stand out in the applicant pool so go and check out jobri AI today to get an edge over the competition it's free and the link is in the description below now back to the video so ATS stands for applicant
tracking system and it's software used by employers to manage and streamline the hiring process it collects scans and sorts résumés and job applications screens candidates based on specified criteria stores your application info in a database and TRS candidates through the hiring process you'll also remain there for the hiring team or recruiters to search later in big companies it's used to handle the high volume of applications they receive so how do you make your resumé ATS compliant well here's some steps number one use a simple clean format avoid Graphics images tables and text boxes and use
standard section hittings like work experience and education don't get creative with wording remember these systems scan your resume and you want that to be as easy as possible for them to do and I found an article here on job scan talking about ATS and in the context of knockout questions sometime they try to give you questions upfront to disqualify you but after doing so it says here that the ATS scans your resume and parses it this involves sifting your information and converting it into a structured format this information is stored in the ATS tracking database
when recruiters want to find suitable job candidates all they have to do is search through the database for them so make sure that resumé is easy to scan number two make sure you submit it as ax or a PDF formatted file number three use relevant keywords be sure you've read the job description closely and have adapted the resume to use the keywords be sure to use the long form and acronyms throughout your resume like JS and JavaScript use both words it says here hiring managers use keywords for suitable job candidates in the ATS database a
keyword can be a single word or a phrase most keywords or job titles or skills for example if a hiring manager searching for a dental assistant they might type the word dental assistant into the ATS search bar hiring managers can also type in multiple terms for example dental assistant might be combined with x-ray certification and patient care rums that contain all three keywords will appear to the hiring manager rumes that don't contain all three keywords will remain hidden in the ATS database And in regards to how you score in their database which is based on
your keywords and how much you match that job description it says the higher your score the better your chances of getting an interview to increase your score read the job description and highlight the keywords that appear most frequently pay particular attention to the keywords that are hard skills hard skills are specific abilities that are usually acquired through training or education examples of hard skills include graphic design Salesforce data analysis project management Python and SEO in other words try to use the same words on your resumé that the hiring manager used in the job description this
will make your resume easier to find resulting in more job interviews number four use an ATS friendly font Choose aiel Or Times New Roman body Tech should be 10 to 12 font and headers 14 to 16 number five have clear section headings like work experience education or skills do not use creative or non-standard section titles number six be sure to tailor each resume to the specific job application and use AI to tweak this a prompt might be something like how can I update this resume to sound more senior for this senior python developer role number
seven use bullet points for better readability number eight avoid headers and Footers place all important information in the main body of the resume and then number nine keep it clean and concise remember that you're trying to get called in for the interviews so that they can get to know you better not spilling all the beans up front and finally let's talk about the job interview itself one of the best ways to prepare for when they actually respond back and set a date to meet you is to practice for That interview how can you do this
no don't ask your wife or your brother or your friends to do any mock interviewing for you instead use Ai and you can do this in two parts the spoken interview which one is often completely unprepared for given the emphasis we put on the technical side as well as the technical interview let me give you some guidance on how to use AI for both so first we have the spoken interview Chad gbt has a new speech feature where you can literally sit and chat back and forth with AI the latency is low and while this
may sound super creepy and is a little creepy it's really useful for interview practice and I think it's only available on the subscription plan but for what you're getting here I think it's worth it check this out hope you can hear this but I have Chad GT on my phone I can select the speech feature and I can say something like this all right let's have a conversation you're going to be a senior software JavaScript developer of 15 years and a hiring manager 10 of those last 15 years you're interviewing me for a front-end react
position I'm going to be the one you're interviewing let's have a discussion where you will ask me 10 interview questions starting with an introduction question and then slowly moving into a more react specific set of questions every time you ask me a question pause and give me time to answer and even give me feedback on how I could have better answered the question before moving on to the next question does that sound good sounds great let's get started to begin can you briefly introduce yourself and share a bit about your background in software development yeah
my name's Travis I am a Javas script developer of 3 years um I started with JavaScript and I moved into react and I really like react and I saw this job opportunity and uh I love programming and this is a horrible response to the question but anyway that's my answer thanks for the introduction Travis it's great to hear about your passion for react to strengthen your response you could provide more details about your experience such as specific projects or Technologies you've worked with with and how they've prepared you for this role now let's move on
to the next question can you tell me about a challenging project you've worked on and how you approached solving the problems you faced feel free to take your time so yeah I try to make that quick but you see what you can do there they're going to ask you 10 questions you're going to prop it up and just act like it's an interview and it's going to ask you questions that you're probably going to get at an interview and you can have this back and forth conversation so that's how you can practice for that initial
interview where they ask you weird questions like name a time where you had this big Challenge and you let everybody down and how did you go about solving it questions like that now for the technical part you can actually log in on your computer and work on it here and here's an example I just set this one up so I can show you so I pulled up Chad gbt and I set the stage I said you are a JavaScript developer senior level of 15 years I'm trying to practice for my upcoming technical interview for a
react job can you give me four technical react coding interview questions and wait as I solve and submit the answers for each one before before giving the next also give me feedback on my answer and so it started with question one it's going to wait for me to answer it it's going to give me feedback then it's going to go to question two so this is going to be like a technical interview and it says question one you're given a list of items and you need to create a react component that renders this list each
item has an ID name and price the component should one render the items in an unordered list two display each item as a list element showing the name and the price when an item is clicked or number three when an item is clicked it should log its ID to the console so very basic you could probably ask it to give you harder questions or more algorithmic questions but this is what it gave me with this prompt so here's my items I have a list of these item objects and it says create a functional react component
called item list that meets the requirements you can write your solution below when ready so I pulled up my vs code and I wrote this here's items list here's my items and I have a handle click item that console. logs the item idid and I have my list here and a map through the list and I submitted that and he said or it said your solution's correct and meets all the requirements here are some strengths I had the correct use of map I had a unique key prop that's something they were looking for and the
event handling is fine suggestions performance Improvement instead of passing the entire item object to the click Handler you could pass only the ID this reduces the amount of data passed in the call back and it shows me how to do that this change would have a small but positive impact on performance overall this is a solid Sol solution ready for the next question and I said yes and it says you need to build a simple counter component in react the component should one and here's my next challenge create a functional react component called counter that
implements this functionality so that's pretty cool that's a great way to practice your technical interview and you could switch this to c or Java or PHP or laravel whatever you want and you can make it as technical as you want so these are just some of the ways to meet the hiring team in the middle and push back with some tools of your own tools that will help you be more productive and effective on your job search overall so what tools are you using what do you think about all this I'd love to hear about
it below if you found this video helpful give it a thumbs up if you haven't subscribed to the channel consider doing so and I'll see you in the next video [Music]
