Seven Forbidden Sexual Sins: What Every Christian Must Know Hey, welcome! I'm so glad you're here. Today, we're diving into a topic that might make you feel uncomfortable at first, but I want you to know upfront, this is not about condemnation; it's about uncovering the truth that sets us free.
Have you ever paused to think about what God really says about sexual sin? Not what culture says, not what your friends say, but what God says in His Word? I know it's a heavy question, and it's one that requires courage to answer honestly.
Let me start by saying this: God is not out to shame you or rob you of joy. In fact, it's the opposite. God cares so much about you that He gave clear instructions in the Bible to protect you, to guide you, and to lead you into a life of freedom and wholeness.
Sexual sin, though, is one of those things that can quietly take root in our lives, grow out of control, and wreak havoc before we even realize what's happened. And here's the thing: it doesn't just hurt us; it affects our relationships, our families, and even our spiritual connection with God. But why does God care so much about this?
Why does He hate these sins in particular? It's because He created intimacy to be one of the most beautiful and sacred gifts we can experience. It's not just a physical act; it's deeply emotional and profoundly spiritual.
When we step outside of His design, we risk breaking the very relationships He intended to be life-giving and fulfilling. And when that happens, we not only hurt others; we hurt ourselves, and most importantly, we grieve the heart of God. So today, we're going to talk about the seven most terrible sexual sins that the Bible says God hates.
These aren't just random rules meant to restrict us; they're warnings from a loving Father who wants to keep us from harm. And while this might sound intense, I want you to hang in there with me, because by the end of this, I hope you'll see how much God loves you, how much He desires to forgive and restore you, and how He can take even the most broken story and turn it into something beautiful. Before we go any further, let me make one thing very clear: this isn't about judgment.
None of us are perfect. The Bible says, "All have sinned and fall short of the glory of God" (Romans 3:23). This includes me; this includes you; and this includes everyone who has ever walked this Earth.
The good news? God's grace is bigger than any sin. His forgiveness is available to anyone who asks for it with a humble and sincere heart.
So as we talk about these seven sins, I encourage you to listen with an open heart. This isn't about pointing fingers or making anyone feel hopeless; it's about shining a light on the things that can separate us from God and discovering the incredible freedom that comes when we turn away from those things and turn toward Him. Let's start this journey together, one step at a time.
Take a deep breath, lean in, and let's explore the truth of God's Word, because in His truth, there is life, there is hope, and there is the promise of a new beginning. Are you ready? Let's go!
Number One: Adultery – Betraying the Covenant of Marriage Let's start with a big one: adultery. Now, I know you've heard this word before; it's one of the Ten Commandments: "You shall not commit adultery" (Exodus 20:14). But what does it really mean, and why is it such a serious sin in the eyes of God?
Adultery is quite simply the act of breaking the sacred promise of marriage. It's not just about physical infidelity; it's about betraying the trust and the covenant you made before God and your spouse. Marriage isn't just a contract; it's a holy union designed by God Himself to reflect His covenantal love.
Think about it: God compares marriage to the relationship between Christ and the Church, a relationship that is unbreakable, faithful, and full of selfless love. When someone chooses adultery, it's like throwing a stone into a calm pond; the ripples spread far beyond the initial act. It shatters trust, damages families, and wounds everyone involved, including children, friends, and even communities.
Proverbs 6:32 warns us: "He who commits adultery lacks sense; he who does it destroys himself. " That's strong language, but it's there for a reason. Adultery doesn't just harm others; it harms you.
It eats away at your soul, your integrity, and your peace. Why does God hate adultery so much? Because He knows the pain it causes.
He knows how it distorts His beautiful design for marriage and intimacy, and He knows that it leads to a cycle of guilt, shame, and brokenness. But here's the good news: if you've committed this sin, it's not the end of the story. Look at King David in the Bible.
He committed adultery with Bathsheba, and it led to devastating consequences. Yet when he repented with a sincere heart, God forgave him. Psalm 51 is a powerful example of what true repentance looks like.
If you've made mistakes, take heart: God's mercy is greater than any sin, including adultery. So if you're married, protect your covenant fiercely; guard your heart, set boundaries, and stay accountable. And if you've been hurt by adultery, remember that God sees your pain.
He is a God of restoration, and He can heal even the deepest wounds. Number Two: Fornication – Treating What Is Sacred as Casual Let's move to another sin that's become almost invisible in today's culture: fornication. You've probably heard the word, but let's define it.
Fornication is engaging in sexual activity outside of marriage. Now, you might be thinking, "What's the big deal? Everyone does it; it's just part of modern life.
" Dating, but let's look at what God's word says in 1 Corinthians 6:18. Paul gives us this urgent command: "Flee from sexual immorality. Every other sin a person commits is outside the body, but the sexually immoral person sins against his own body.
" That's heavy, isn't it? Sexual sin isn't just external; it's deeply personal. It affects your body, your mind, and your spirit.
Why? Because God designed intimacy to be so much more than a physical act—it's a bond that unites two people at the deepest levels, emotionally, spiritually, and even chemically. Science confirms this: the brain releases hormones during intimacy that create attachment and trust.
When we treat something so sacred as casual, we break that bond and leave ourselves and others hurt and empty. Here's the cultural problem: fornication is glorified in movies, music, and even social media, celebrated as normal, harmless, or even empowering. But God's standard hasn't changed; His design for intimacy is within the covenant of marriage.
Why? Because that's where it's safest, most fulfilling, and most honoring to Him. Hebrews 13:4 puts it plainly: "Let marriage be held in honor among all, and let the marriage bed be undefiled, for God will judge the sexually immoral and adulterous.
" Now, I know some of you might be feeling convicted right now. Maybe you've struggled with this sin; maybe it feels like an impossible cycle to break. Let me remind you that God's grace is bigger than any mistake you've made.
In John 8, Jesus forgave a woman caught in the act of adultery. His words to her were powerful: "Neither do I condemn you; go and sin no more. " That's the heart of God.
He doesn't want to condemn you; He wants to set you free. So what can you do if you're caught in fornication? First, acknowledge it for what it is: sin.
Then turn to God in repentance. Ask Him to help you live in purity. If you're in a relationship where sexual sin is present, have the courage to set boundaries or step away if necessary.
Trust me, God honors those who honor Him. When you pursue purity, you're not just following a rule; you're stepping into the life God designed for you: a life full of peace, joy, and blessing. You might feel like you've gone too far or that it's too late for you, but let me tell you something: it's never too late with God.
He is a redeemer; He can take what's broken and make it whole again. All you need to do is take the first step toward Him. Number three: homosexual behavior straying from God's design.
This next topic is one of the most controversial and sensitive subjects today, but as Christians, we are called to align our views with scripture, even when it's difficult or unpopular. Homosexual behavior is addressed in the Bible as a sin, and God's word is clear about His design for relationships and intimacy. Now, before we dive in, let me make something very clear: this is not about hate; this is about truth spoken in love.
God loves every single person, no matter their past or struggles, and He desires a relationship with all of us. Romans 1:26-27 says, "For this reason God gave them up to dishonorable passions. For their women exchanged natural relations for those that are contrary to nature; and the men likewise gave up natural relations with women and were consumed with passion for one another.
" This passage, along with others like 1 Corinthians 6:9-10, reveals that homosexual behavior goes against God's design for intimacy and relationships. God created marriage and sexual union to be between one man and one woman, reflecting the covenant relationship between Christ and His church. But here's where it gets real: homosexuality is not the only sin in this area; it's one of many ways humanity has turned away from God's perfect plan.
Whether it's adultery, fornication, or lust, all sexual sin falls short of God's glory. What makes homosexuality distinct is the cultural pressure to accept it as normal and even righteous. But as Christians, our standard isn't culture; it's scripture.
Why does God hate this sin? Because it distorts His beautiful design for human flourishing. It takes what He intended to be life-giving and turns it into something contrary to His will.
But here's the good news: no one is beyond the reach of God's grace. The same Jesus who forgave adulterers and liars offers forgiveness and transformation to anyone who repents and believes in Him. If you're struggling with same-sex attraction or know someone who is, I encourage you to approach this with compassion, not condemnation.
God's word is not a weapon to beat people down; it's a light to guide them to freedom. And remember, God's love is for everyone; His power to heal, redeem, and transform is available to all who seek Him. Number four: lust, a sin of the heart and mind.
Lust is one of those sins that often gets dismissed or overlooked. People think, "It's just in my head; it's not hurting anyone. " But Jesus had something very different to say about it.
In Matthew 5:28, He says, "But I say to you that everyone who looks at a woman with lustful intent has already committed adultery with her in his heart. " Wow! Let that sink in for a moment.
Jesus isn't just talking about physical actions; He's going straight to the heart of the matter: our thoughts and desires. Why is lust such a big deal? Because it's the seed from which many other sins grow.
Lust starts in the mind, but it doesn't stay there; it can lead to adultery, fornication, pornography, and more. Even if it doesn't result in outward actions, it still damages your soul. It distorts how you see others, turning them into objects instead of people made in the image of God.
The world tells us that lust is normal, even healthy. Just scroll through social media or watch a movie, and you'll see it celebrated everywhere. But God calls us to a higher standard.
Second Timothy 2:22 says, "So flee youthful passions and pursue righteousness, faith, love, and peace, along with those who call on the Lord from a pure heart. " Lust isn't something to play with or manage; it's something to flee from. So, how do you fight lust?
It starts with your mind. Romans 12:2 tells us to "be transformed by the renewal of your mind. " What are you feeding your thoughts?
Are you filling your mind with God's Word, or are you allowing the world to shape your desires? Prayer is another powerful weapon. Ask God to help you take every thought captive (2 Corinthians 10:5) and to give you a pure heart.
Let me be real with you: overcoming lust isn't easy. It's a battle that requires discipline, accountability, and dependence on God. But here's the good news: you don't have to fight it alone.
God is with you, and He's ready to give you the strength you need. If you've fallen into this sin, don't lose hope. Confess it to God, ask for His forgiveness, and take practical steps to guard your heart and mind.
Remember, lust might seem private, but it has public consequences. It affects how you treat others, how you see yourself, and how you relate to God. But with His help, you can overcome it.
You can walk in purity, and you can experience the freedom and joy that comes from living according to God's design. Number five: Pornography - poison for the soul. Let's talk about something that has become one of the most pervasive and destructive issues of our time: pornography.
You don't have to go far to find it; it's everywhere. It's in our pockets, on our screens, in our entertainment, and often just a click away. But as easy and accessible as it is, pornography is not harmless.
In fact, it's one of the most insidious forms of sexual sin that the Bible warns us about. Jesus' words in Matthew 5:28 state, "But I say to you that everyone who looks at a woman with lustful intent has already committed adultery with her in his heart. " This hits home.
Pornography fuels lust, objectifies people, and distorts God's design for intimacy. It promises satisfaction but leaves emptiness; it promises pleasure but delivers shame. And it doesn't just affect individuals; it destroys relationships, marriages, and even society as a whole.
Studies show that pornography rewires the brain, creating addictive cycles that are difficult to break. It numbs the heart to genuine intimacy, leaving people feeling disconnected and unfulfilled. But beyond the psychological and relational damage, the spiritual consequences are even greater.
1 Corinthians 6:19-20 reminds us: "Do you not know that your body is a temple of the Holy Spirit within you, whom you have from God? You are not your own, for you were bought with a price. So glorify God in your body.
" When we consume pornography, we dishonor God, His creation, and the temple of our own bodies. But here's the hope: freedom is possible. If you've struggled with pornography, you're not alone.
Many people, even within the church, have faced this battle. The key is bringing it into the light. 1 John 1:9 says, "If we confess our sins, He is faithful and just to forgive us our sins and to cleanse us from all unrighteousness.
" God is not waiting to condemn you; He's waiting to set you free. Practical steps are essential in breaking free from this sin. Install accountability software, find a trusted friend or mentor to walk with you, and immerse yourself in God's Word.
Replace the lies of pornography with the truth of Scripture, and most importantly, pray. Ask God to renew your mind, strengthen your resolve, and help you see people as He sees them—as His beloved creation. Pornography might seem like a private sin, but its effects are far-reaching.
If you're caught in its grip, take the first step toward freedom today. God's grace is sufficient, and His power can break every chain. Number six: Incest—violating the boundaries of family.
This is one of the darkest and most grievous sins on this list: incest. It's a sin that not only goes against God's moral law but also violates the sacred boundaries of family relationships. The Bible is explicit about this in Leviticus 18, where God lays out clear prohibitions against sexual relations with close relatives.
These boundaries are not arbitrary; they are meant to protect the sanctity, trust, and safety of the family unit. Incest is a sin that deeply distorts God's design for family. Families are meant to be places of love, nurture, and protection, not exploitation.
When incest occurs, it breaks that trust in devastating ways, leaving victims scarred emotionally, mentally, and spiritually. It's not just a violation of human dignity; it's a direct affront to God's holy order. Leviticus 18:6 says, "None of you shall approach any one of his close relatives to uncover nakedness; I am the Lord.
" This command isn't just about physical acts; it's about preserving the integrity and holiness of relationships that God Himself established. Incest corrupts what God intended to be pure and beautiful, turning it into something destructive. If you've experienced the pain of incest, whether as a victim or even as a perpetrator, know that God sees you.
He sees the hurt, the shame, and the brokenness, and He offers healing and redemption. Psalm 34:18 reminds us, "The Lord is near to the brokenhearted and saves the crushed in spirit. " If you're a victim, seek help.
Talk to a trusted pastor, counselor, or friend who can support you. God wants to bring you healing, justice, and restoration. For those who have committed this sin, as unimaginable as it may seem, God's grace is still available.
Repentance is the first step. Acknowledge the gravity of the sin. Forgiveness from God and taking responsibility for the consequences.
True repentance involves turning away from sin completely and seeking to make amends where possible. Incest is a sin that God hates because of the deep pain it causes, but even in the midst of such darkness, His light can shine no matter the circumstances. God's power to heal and redeem is greater than any sin.
Turn to Him and let His love restore what has been broken. Number seven: prostitution – selling what is sacred. Finally, let's talk about a sin that's been around since the earliest days of human history: prostitution.
Proverbs 6:26 warns us, "For the price of a prostitute is only a loaf of bread, but a married woman hunts down a precious life. " This sin, in its essence, involves taking something sacred—our God-given sexuality—and turning it into a transaction. Whether it's for money, attention, or power, prostitution reduces the beautiful gift of intimacy to something cheap and hollow.
In today's culture, prostitution might look different. While the traditional form still exists, there's also the rise of modern-day equivalents—exchanging our bodies or sexual allure for validation, influence, or social currency. From explicit content online to compromising situations in relationships, the heart issue remains the same: misusing what God intended for purity and covenant.
The Bible highlights the gravity of this sin but also shows incredible examples of redemption. One of the most powerful stories is that of Rahab the Prostitute from Jericho. Rahab lived a life of sin but turned to God in faith.
Her story is a testimony to God's ability to redeem anyone, no matter their past. Not only was she saved, but she also became part of the lineage of Jesus Christ (Matthew 1:5). Imagine that—from a life of prostitution to a place of honor in God's plan!
Why does God hate prostitution? Because it devalues His creation. Our bodies are not commodities; they are temples of the Holy Spirit, as stated in 1 Corinthians 6:19.
Prostitution tears apart the sacredness of intimacy and leaves brokenness in its wake. But like with every sin we've discussed, God's mercy extends even here. If you've been involved in prostitution or feel caught in a cycle of using your body to gain something, know this: God doesn't see you as damaged goods; He sees you as His child, made in His image, worthy of love and redemption.
Just as Jesus welcomed sinners with open arms, He welcomes you. Turn to Him and let Him rewrite your story. **Conclusion: The Call to Repentance and Restoration** We've covered a lot today, haven't we?
From adultery to lust, fornication to pornography, homosexuality to incest and prostitution—these are heavy topics. But as we come to the end of this conversation, I want to remind you of something critically important: God's hatred for sin is matched by His overwhelming love for sinners. The Bible makes it clear that sexual sin grieves God deeply, not because He wants to control us, but because He wants to protect us.
He created intimacy as a beautiful gift to be enjoyed within His design. When we step outside of that design, we invite pain, shame, and separation from Him. But here's the truth that changes everything: If we confess our sins, He is faithful and just to forgive us our sins and to cleanse us from all unrighteousness (1 John 1:9).
You might be feeling convicted right now; maybe you see yourself in one or more of the sins we've discussed. But conviction is not condemnation. Conviction is God's way of inviting you back to Him.
No matter what your past looks like, His arms are open wide. The cross is proof of that. Jesus paid the price for every sin, including the ones we've talked about today.
There is no sin too big for His grace. If you're struggling with sexual sin, here are three steps to take today: 1. **Repent**: Turn away from the sin and toward God.
Acknowledge it, ask for His forgiveness, and commit to change. 2. **Seek Help**: Don't walk this road alone.
Find a trusted pastor, counselor, or accountability partner who can support you. 3. **Pursue Holiness**: Immerse yourself in God's Word, prayer, and worship.
Let Him renew your mind and guide your steps. Remember, the goal is not just to avoid sin but to walk in the fullness of God's design for your life. He has a plan for you—a plan for joy, peace, and purpose.
Jeremiah 29:11 says, "For I know the plans I have for you, declares the Lord, plans for welfare and not for evil, to give you a future and a hope. " That promise is for you. So, as we close, I invite you to take a moment to pray.
Ask God to search your heart, reveal any areas where you need His healing and grace, and give you the strength to walk in His truth. Remember, this isn't about judgment; it's about freedom. And freedom is exactly what God offers to those who come to Him.
Thank you for joining me on this journey today. My prayer is that this message doesn't just inform you but transforms you, drawing you closer to the God who loves you more than you can imagine. Until next time, walk in His grace and never forget: no matter where you've been or what you've done, God's love for you remains unshakable.
