hello everyone and welcome back to another video for those who don't know me hi my name is kolina I teach English on social media and that's what I'm going to do in today's video you know when I was learning English I thought my English was pretty good because I was able to communicate and I would understand everything in English but at times I wanted to say a phrase that was very common in Spanish and I you don't know how to say it in English and that is what I'm going to teach you in today's video
I'm not going to translate anything from Spanish I'm just going to give you a context of phrases that you need every day so let's get started the first phrase I want to teach you guys today is by the way by the way is a phrase that is used to introduce a new topic in a conversation let's say we are talking about work what you're doing at work work what I'm doing at work and then I remember I asked you to buy bread this morning so I'm going to introduce the topic saying oh by the way
did you buy bread this morning by the way the next phrase is in the meantime in the meantime this means during the time before something happens referring to what can be done in that time um let's say you go to a restaurant right and the waitress comes and says we have a table in 15 minutes in the meantime would you like to wait at the bar it means during the time before that table is ready for us we can wait at the bar in the meantime just in case it means as a precaution and you
use it when you are preparing yourself or preparing something for a possible situation that might happen in the future I have an umbrella in my backpack in case it rains I don't know if it's going to rain it's a precaution it might rain if it rains then I have my umbrella just in case the next one is very common in emails I use this one a lot I'm looking forward to not only in emails but you can use it when you are talking to someone looking forward to means to be excited about something that is
going to happen for example I'm looking forward to our next meeting it means I'm excited about our next meeting and here's a grammatical rule that you want to keep in mind if you use looking forward to and then a verb that verb has to be used with the continuous form ining for example example I'm looking forward to meeting you we can't say I'm looking forward to meet that would be grammatical incorrect I'm looking forward to seeing you I'm looking forward to talking with you next one is I appreciate it I use this one all the
time I appreciate it it's a way to thank someone or to show gratitude it is a synonym of thank you but you can so combine it with thank you in a sentence you can say oh thank you so much for helping me today I really appreciate it next phrase it doesn't matter it doesn't matter it is used to say that something is not really important when you want to dismiss a concept a topic you can just say oh it doesn't matter for example if someone comes and says oh my God I'm so sorry I broke
a glass it is really not important just a glass so I'm going to say oh it's okay it doesn't matter it's really not that important don't worry about it it doesn't matter another phrase which is very common at work is I'll get back to you I'll get back to you it is a promise that you will respond later on let's say you need more time to prepare something or to answer right now you'll say I'll get back to you let's say someone invites me to have dinner with them next week I could say oh I
need to check my schedule I'll get back to you meaning I will answer later I'll give you an answer later I'll get back to you or I'll get back to you later this one is a phrase that I use all the time maybe sometimes too much hang on hang on means wait is a synonym of wait when you need a moment a minute a second before doing something or before continuing doing something just say oh hang on for example oh hang on I think I left the key in the car means wait I think I
left the key in the car hang on another phrase that um sometimes is very confusing for Spanish speakers is that makes sense that makes sense in Spanish we would use the verb has it has sense but in English is just it makes sense it is used to express agreement when someone explains something and you understand and agree with them you can say oh that makes sense mhm let's say I'm in a really bad mood and then I explain oh it's just because I didn't sleep well last night you might say ah okay that makes sense
that's the reason why she's in a bad mood because she didn't really sleep well that makes sense next phrase is never mind I love it because I didn't know how to say this for so long and when I learned how to say it I started using it all the time never mind it is used to indicate that something is not that important it should be disregarded you can use it when you change your mind about something if I ask you hey do you have a pen and then I see that I have a pen I
changed my mind I I don't want your pen cuz I already have mine I can said oh never mind I found mine never mind I'm thinking about it and I really use this phrase all the time never mind you can also use it when you are talking to someone and then you realize that what you're saying is not really relevant or it's unimportant you can just say never mind and start talking about something else never mind list next next one could be considered an idiom and I think it's pretty similar in other languages give me
a hand give me a hand it means you're asking for help or assistance when you need help you can just say oh can you please give me a hand could you give me a hand or simply give me a hand help me this exercise in German is so difficult you speak German give me a hand help me next one is very useful when you forget to do something or you completely forget what you were saying it slipped my mind it slipped my mind you are supposed to remember something and you forget it oh my God
I had to buy a cake for your birthday it completely slipped my mind I completely forgot about it and the last phrase for today is bear with me you know the meaning of bear it's the animal bear but this phrase has nothing to do with real bears it means wait with me stay there with me is used for asking someone to be patient or maybe when you are explaining something that might take some time you can simply say oh bear with me let's say we have to go right now but but I need to find
a document I will say oh please bear with me until I find my document just wait be a little patient bear with me and that's all for today's video guys I hope you found these phrases useful and if you want me to make another video with similar phrases please let me know see you in the next video guys bye-bye
