Fordism. This model revolutionized the industry as it was mass-produced. Mainly for being responsible for standardizing production and reducing costs in general.
Therefore, understand now what Fordism is, how it works and its main characteristics. All in a very practical and summarized way! You want to receive tips and information to set up your own business.
So subscribe to this channel and stay on top of everything you need to know to open your own company. To try to make this subject very clear for you, we will address the following points: 1. WHAT FORDISM IS 2.
HOW IT WORKS 3. MAIN CHARACTERISTICS 4. CRITICISM FORDISM RECEIVES So, let's go!
1. WHAT IS FORDISM Basically, this is the mass production model that was widely used in the United States. Mainly because of its innovative approach to car production, which aimed to reduce the company's and vehicle's production time and costs.
And with cost reduction, it was possible to offer products to the population at more affordable prices. Fordism takes that name because it was created by Henry Ford, founder of the Ford Motor Company assembler, in 1914. Thus, Fordism also represented a historic milestone in the second industrial revolution.
Since it contributed to the development of machinery and industrial installations never seen before. Precisely for this reason, this model is still widely used today. Including being replicated in different types of sectors, and not just in automobiles.
But with some adjustments that we'll talk about later, agreed? 2. HOW IT WORKS In Fordism, the assembly line was developed with the main objective of reducing production time and accelerating the arrival of goods or products to end consumers.
Thus, this production model is based on 3 pillars: AUTOMATION To achieve this objective, the assembly line was automated, making the process more organized. As a result, workers began to specialize in one main activity, which intensified the pace of work. That is, each employee was responsible for a specific part of the production of the material.
Thus, a high professional qualification was not required, since the worker only needed to master the specific manual activity. ECONOMY Likewise, the objective was to reduce inventory. Even because as we always said here on the Blog, stopped stock means loss of money.
Therefore, with reduced inventory, waste is avoided and costs related to production are reduced. As an example, we can cite the fact that all cars available for sale were painted black. Because that was the cheapest paint and it dried the fastest.
PRODUCTIVITY Regarding this pillar, the fact that employees repeatedly perform the same function made them specialists in the area. And it allowed them to get their work done in a shorter amount of time without compromising on quality. Thus, productivity tended to increase, greatly reducing the chances of errors and waste.
And considering all this, we can point out that Fordism has some characteristics that we will show now. 3. MAIN CHARACTERISTICS USE OF CONVEYOR BELT The use of conveyor belts in assembly lines was a revolution in production at the time.
This allowed employees to perform a more specific and repetitive task. Thus, there was no need for a professional qualification. Since each employee needed to master only one type of manual service.
SPECIALIZATION OF THE LABOR In other words, the specialization of the workforce in specific tasks was seen as a way to increase the productivity of the production process. Which ends up reducing the manufacturing time of the products (which at the time were Ford cars). PRODUCTION STANDARDIZATION Due to the sales success at the time, Henry Ford understood that production standardization was profitable.
That is, this standardization was a way to make production cheaper and faster, limiting the model's color options (which in this case was black, as we mentioned earlier). MASS PRODUCTION The demand for the automobiles produced was so great that Henry Ford decided to increase industrial production to the limit. That is, this allowed for a considerable increase in overall production.
Also because of the next feature we're going to talk about. SHORTER PRODUCTION TIME At the same time, with the specialization of labor and the standardization of production that we have talked about so far, it was possible to significantly reduce the time needed to produce a car. 4.
CRITICISM THAT FORDISM RECEIVES Despite the benefits of Fordism, such as the increase in the purchasing power of the population and industrial growth, this model did not prove to be sustainable in the long term. Because one of the disadvantages was the low qualification of employees who performed repetitive and exhausting tasks. Added to this, they received low wages to be able to achieve low vehicle costs.
As a result, unions emerged that sought to defend workers' rights. At the same time, the Fordist model became excessively rigid. And that ended up culminating in its crisis in the 1970s.
In other words, this crisis happened due to overproduction. Which resulted in full stocks, in addition to union pressure for better working conditions. This allowed the rise of competitors, who were already investing in production flexibility, with differentiated car launches.
And that served and pleased consumers more. Also, mass production began to be replaced by lean production such as Toyotism, developed by Toyota. In a nutshell, it is a management and production methodology that aims to optimize processes and reduce waste.
In this way, an attempt is made to reduce the possibility of errors as much as possible. But always maintaining the expected quality. Still, it focuses on reducing the amount of products in stock.
As a result, increase the efficiency of a production. And all this made Fordism become obsolete at the time. Therefore, if you want to understand more about Toyotism to be able to compare these two models, watch our video that explains it in a very practical way.
