What is rust? Hey Engineering Lovers, my name is Igor Felipe and have you noticed that if you leave steel parts exposed for a long time in contact with air and water, this happens here? It gets this orange hue and crumbles, but what exactly is it?

But so what is rust? Rust is an oxidation process that occurs in metals, specifically iron and iron-containing alloys such as steel.
It is a natural phenomenon that occurs when metal is exposed to moisture and oxygen in the air. It is caused by a chemical reaction called oxidation, which involves the loss of electrons by iron atoms. In this process, iron reacts with oxygen present in the atmosphere and with the presence of moisture or water, this causes the transfer of electrons between iron molecules and forms a compound known as iron oxide, also known as rust.
The presence of water is essential for rust to occur, as water acts as an electrolyte and, in addition, moisture accelerates the speed of the chemical reaction, making oxidation faster. Okay, but let's explain this in more detail. The general reaction can be represented as follows: 4Fe + 3O2 → 2Fe2O3 Four iron atoms react with three oxygen molecules in the presence of water to form two iron oxide molecules.
When this metallic iron reacts with oxygen, the crystalline structure of the metal is modified and iron oxide begins to form. Iron oxide has an orange color, which is a characteristic of rust. This color is due to the optical properties of iron oxide, which absorbs certain frequencies of visible light and reflects others, including those corresponding to the orange color.
It is worth noting that the specific color of rust may vary depending on the type of iron oxide formed. Iron III or ferric oxide, also known as hematite, is a common form of rust and has a deep reddish to orange color. On the other hand, iron II or ferrous oxide, known as magnetite, can have a black color.
Okay, but is this rust something bad? Rust is considered a bad thing because it can cause significant damage to the characteristics of elements and their structures. The formation of rust weakens the metal, compromising its strength and structural integrity.
It also causes the metal to wear and deteriorate over time, making it less resistant to loads and actions on it. This is particularly problematic in steel structures such as bridges, buildings and vehicles, where structural failure can be dangerous and cause serious accidents. The presence of rust shortens the life of metal objects and it can gradually corrode metal, causing it to become unusable or requiring replacements.
Rust is also undesirable due to its aesthetic impact. The presence of orange or reddish stains on metal surfaces can affect the appearance of objects, structures and even household items, causing an impression of carelessness or neglect. After all, you wouldn't want to eat off a rusty steel fork.
It can also interfere with the functionality of metallic objects. For example, in gears, bearings or sealing systems, rust can cause excessive friction, preventing smooth movement or proper operation. That's why rusty screws are more difficult to remove, as there is much more friction between the parts and there is still a risk of breaking it.
In addition to local damage caused by the oxidation process itself, rust can also lead to general corrosion of the metal. Corrosion is a continuous process in which rust spreads across the surface of the metal and can reach its core, increasing its degradation and accelerating its deterioration. For these reasons, rust prevention and control is important in various industries and sectors such as civil engineering, shipbuilding, automotive industry, equipment maintenance and many others.
The application of protective coatings, the use of corrosion-resistant alloys and the adoption of appropriate maintenance practices are some of the measures taken to minimize the effects of rust and ensure the durability of metallic objects and structures. There are several ways to prevent rust on metals. One of the most common strategies is the application of protective coatings such as paints, varnishes or galvanization.
This causes it to form a physical barrier between the metal and the environment, preventing direct exposure to oxygen and moisture. In addition, the use of corrosion-resistant metal alloys, such as stainless steel, is also an effective measure. In the field of materials engineering, there is a constant interest in developing metal alloys that are more resistant to rust and in finding more efficient protection methods.
This is important to guarantee the durability and safety of structures and metallic objects that we use in our day. But, incredible as it may seem, in some areas rust does not always mean something bad. Although rust is generally considered undesirable because of the damage it can do to metal objects, there are some areas where the presence of rust can be beneficial or even desirable.
In some cases, rust can be appreciated for its unique aesthetic and interesting visual characteristics. In some forms of art and design, rust is induced or exploited to create rustic, aged or industrial effects. This can be seen in sculptures, decorations, furniture and even certain architectural styles.
In some patina techniques, rust is used to create decorative effects on metallic surfaces. Rust is controlled and stabilized to form a surface layer that gives the metal an aged and characteristic appearance. This is commonly used in decorative objects, jewelry, and even musical instruments.
In some restorations or preservations of historical or architectural objects, the presence of a layer of rust may be intentionally maintained to preserve the authenticity and original appearance of these objects. It can be treated and stabilized to prevent further damage to the metal, but it is maintained as part of the historic heritage. Rust is extensively studied in areas such as corrosion and materials science.
Understanding the oxidation process and rust formation is crucial to developing more effective and advanced corrosion protection methods.
