today I'm going to show you how to transform an ordinary scene and make it cinematic [Music] so you have a video idea you pick up your camera you pick up your lens attach the lens set up the tripod set up the camera on the tripod and everything is all set then you turn on your camera and look at the screen and realize that the shot looks dull and plain you order some video likes to make your shots look better you receive the video lights you unbox it you set it up turn it on and you
look at the camera and the shot still looks boring so how do you make your shots look good and most importantly how do you make your shots look cinematic in order to make your video cinematic it needs to have certain visual qualities and Aesthetics of a film to demonstrate this we are going to shoot three epic cinematic sequences this is our shooting location for the first sequence which is very dull and boring but the script is very light-hearted and fun so keeping that in mind we took most of the creative decisions When approaching a suit
I like to ask myself what is the intention of the shot what does the script demand and how do I want the character to be viewed as by considering these factors we can take informed decisions to enhance the storytelling visually in this location we had a window that could serve as an object to frame the composition taking inspiration from West Anderson movies we decided to go for a symmetrical composition placing the subject at the center of the frame to match the light-hearted and fun theme we decided to go for a blue and yellow color scheme
with vibrant colors this means that not only the lighting but also the props and overall set design had to match this theme we also changed the actor's t-shirt based on the color scheme now comes the question how do you light the scene well lighting a scene is like painting a blank canvas I like to start off by eliminating all the light sources and then adding in the lights layer after layer for this shoot we went with the three-point lighting setup one key light to illuminate the subject one fill light to illuminate the background and one
practical light to add more depth now let's see the results of our efforts by playing back the first sequence foreign [Music] unlike the first sequence in the second sequence the script demanded the character to be viewed as a hero returning from a fight and every hero needs a heroic entry so we went with a Vortex shot as the Hero Walks out and gets revealed we wanted to create a sense of dominance hence we went for low angle shots this perspective establishes dominance and makes the character appear more Superior the location for this sequence is a
hallway in a building with an old and rustic look which adds to the overall desired aesthetic and we use the hallway itself to form the composition using the pillars as leading lines to guide the viewer's eyes towards the subject also unlike the previous sequence we decided to include natural light in this sequence we used one fill light angle towards the roof to bounce off and gently illuminate the subject additionally we employed a pocket RGB light to highlight the subject as he walks out and lights the cigarette adding a touch of style to the scene the
natural light at the end of the hallway acts as a backlight enhancing the overall look and adding more depth however we faced a challenge in this sequence we wanted a cyan yellow color team just because the sunlight was so bright we couldn't use the RGB lights to make that color theme possible so what did we do we fixed it in post by color grading using DaVinci Resolve to add an extra Dynamic element we shot this entire sequence in 100 FPS keeping in mind that we can speed ramp and add slow motion in the editing process
now let's play back the second sequence and see how cinematic it looks foreign [Music] if you had a gun shoot him in the head [Music] now this is the most fun and exciting sequence because unlike the previous two sequences in this sequence we need to display the character as evil and dark to achieve this we wanted a dark and contrasty look with red as the primary color however the room that we shot in looked like this which does not match the vibe at all to fix that we hung black curtains to make the background look
dark which is crucial for setting the dark tone now comes the fun part which is lighting when it comes to lighting it's not just about turning on the light and pointing it towards the subject it's more about how much of the light is Illuminating how much of the scene in our case we use the chart paper to create a funnel directing the light specifically towards our subject initially the light reflected of the floor and bounced back on the subject's face but since we wanted to create a stark contrast we place the black curtain and cut
off the reflection this is what creates the dramatic split lighting effect something else that helps me to attain the Cinematic look is the roll-off around the highlights that we see in films like Blade Runner 2049 where there's almost like a glow effect around the source of Light which is exactly why I decided to use the black mist filters by Nissi when you add these filters to your camera it reduces the value of highlights and lowers the overall digital sharpness which creates a film-like effect Nissi black misfilters are available in three variations one by two one
by four and one by eight the beauty lies in their versatility you have the power to choose how much glow you want around the highlights for a dreamy sequence like this one by two is the preferred option in the first sequence we wanted a gentle glow around the Practical light so we use the 1x4 black mist filter in the last sequence we wanted more contrast but we wanted a subtle glow so we use the 1x8 black mist filter without a doubt these filters are an essential tool in my camera bag I would like to thank
Missy for sponsoring this video and bringing my Creative Visions to life to intensify the atmosphere we added fog which enhanced the visibility of the ray of light creating a spotlight effect on the subject close-up shots were captured to emphasize the intensity and add more depth to the scene now let's play back the third sequence and see if we are able to create the dark and evil cinematic look so that's it guys that's my Approach in making any location look cinematic and I just wanted to add that there's no hard and fast rule you can go
about however you want at the end the end result is what matters by the way all of these videos were shot for my friend breeds Channel launch so you can look out on his channel for the final videos other than that always remember keep creating
