First, I was going to open a CNPJ, then I was going to apply for my trademark registration. Then I was going to hire a professional to create my visual identity. No, I wasn't going to do any of that.
I was going to do completely different processes from what I just told you. To start my clothing brand again, with only a thousand reais. And that's what I'm going to show you in this video.
Stay with me until the end. Let's go. If you don't know me yet, welcome to the Marca do Zero channel.
My name is Rafael Vencio and I've been working with clothing and e-commerce for over 10 years. I recently started a brand from scratch and documented everything on YouTube and Instagram. If you like the theme of this video, leave a like here.
If you're not already subscribed to the channel, subscribe now too. So you don't miss out on other content like this. I bring new videos every week.
Subscribe here now because otherwise you'll be missing out on some great content. First, I want to make it very clear that in this example from the video, To start a clothing brand with a thousand reais, We will consider starting the brand by investing in inventory. There are options today such as Reserva Inc, Where you start your own clothing brand without having to invest in inventory.
It's a great option, but in this video I'm going to assume that we're going to invest in inventory. And work with a more personalized product. We'll choose the fabric, we'll choose the product we're going to make.
So it's going to be much more personalized than using stock from a third-party partner. First, I'm going to tell you that I wouldn't open a CNPJ. That would incur costs.
Initially, starting the brand with just a thousand reais is very little money. A thousand reais is too little. You can't invest in almost anything.
So if you're going to spend money to open a CNPJ, to open an MEI, You'll spend 60 reais a month on MEI, which is the tax you'll have to pay. So it won't be worth it because 60 reais is a lot of money considering we have a thousand. 60 reais is 6% of our investment.
Let's validate the business first and then we'll formalize it, okay? I wouldn't file for a trademark just yet. To apply for a trademark, you'll have to spend at least 200 reais.
To submit this application. If we do this now, we'll spend 20% of our investment. We have a thousand reais to start with.
So I wouldn't make that investment now, but I would as soon as possible. As soon as the business was validated. And even if I'm not going to register at the moment, I would definitely do a search at the INPI to see if the name I'm choosing Is a name that has no trademark registration.
Don't make the mistake of starting with a name that someone else has already trademarked. First do the research, see that no one's using the brand name you want to use. If no one's using it, fine, you can start your own brand.
And you register as soon as possible. I'd file for registration as soon as I'd sold these first pieces From the thousand-real investment we're going to make. But we'll get to which pieces we're going to make.
And the visual identity? I wouldn't hire anyone now to do it because the investment is high too. And when I started my first brand 10 years ago, I developed my brand's visual identity myself.
So this can't be something that stops you from getting started. You can't be like, "Darn, I'm not going to start now because I don't have money To pay a professional to create my visual identity. " If you stick with that mindset, you'll never get started.
Today there are many tools on the internet that can help you develop a visual identity. Even if it's not the perfect visual identity, You can develop a visual identity that you feel Is conveying what you want with your brand, That you're proud of the identity you've created yourself To get started. And then when you have better financial resources, You can pay a professional to do it.
That's why, with only a thousand reais, I wouldn't pay someone to do a visual identity. I would research tools and develop a visual identity myself. I also wouldn't open an MEI or a CNPJ initially.
And I wouldn't file a trademark application at first either. First, I would sell these initial pieces, validate the business, And then I would proceed with registration. But remember that you have to search for the brand name To create a brand name that is not registered with the INPI, That no one has registered it.
Otherwise, you'll be wasting time and money. And now the next step would be to choose a niche for your clothing brand. If I had to start from scratch again, I would choose a very specific niche.
I wouldn't leave it too open because that will create difficulties in generating the first sales. The more specific your niche is, the easier it will be for you to generate your first sales. Because you're going to communicate, develop products specifically for that audience, for that niche.
and then it will be much easier for you to generate sales for those people. Because you're going to communicate that way, will create content aimed at this niche. Then it will be much easier for you to generate those first sales.
There are various types of niches, for example, skateboarding, surfing, soccer, basketball. You can do the gospel niche, plus size. You can choose a style of music to focus on.
Or you could also create a streetwear brand. And in the example I'm going to use here, with this investment of a thousand reais, I'm going to choose the streetwear audience. and more specifically the audience that likes oversized shirts.
So we can give a concrete example of costs here in this video, I'm going to choose this niche, but you're going to choose the niche that you most identify with when creating your brand. I'm choosing mine, and then you'll choose yours. So, what are we going to do?
First, let's define which product we're going to create for our brand. As we have little investment, I don't recommend that you create several products. I recommend that you choose one product and focus on it.
Now we're going to open the Aradef website here, which is a fabric manufacturer. And Aradef has several T-shirt designs, of clothing patterns, in fact. You open the Aradef website and go to molds.
And here's a template for several pieces. What's this mold for, Rafa? This template will be used to cut out the fabric and develop and make the pieces that are here.
So, in addition to the fabric, which you can buy here on their website, you can also buy the molds. And the mold is much cheaper than if you were to take it to a pattern maker and develop that mold. I had a look here.
There are all kinds of pieces here. You can choose the one that relates to your niche. But I chose one that has to do with my niche.
Let me open it here. Which is the Oversized T-shirt. They have an Oversized T-shirt pattern here.
Pattern for an oversized T-shirt with a high collar. And the coolest thing here, in these molds, they indicate which fabric you can use as well. So here it's saying that it has the pattern for the Oversized T-shirt.
Notice that it has a higher collar. The collar is thicker. So it's a different product.
It's a niche product. I recommend that you start with niche products. The more general what you're selling is, the harder it will be.
Because you'll be competing with big players in the market. And the big players in the market have a much lower cost and much greater operational efficiency than yours. So, if you niche down to a group that you identify with, that you like, you'll be able to sell much more easily.
I'm going to choose Oversized. That's what I like. That's what I enjoy.
I think it's a street style. And I can relate to it too. So what are we going to do?
We'll click here to buy. Let's buy this mold here for R$20. We're going to make our first investment.
And here it's also recommending the fabric we're going to use. The fabric it recommends for that mold they have there is this Fine Cotton sweatshirt material. It comes in all these colors here.
I'm not going to choose a very different color. I'm going to focus on the basics. I'm going for black and champagne.
Champagne is like off-white. And black is black. Alright?
And here we can buy fabric from 2kg upwards. And there's the ribbing down here that we'll have to buy as well. For the T-shirt, I recommend you buy 5% ribbing of the total amount of fabric you are buying.
I'll show it to you in the cart. Note that this fabric has a weight of 210g per square meter. A normal T-shirt, like mine here, has 170g per square meter.
Which is a normal T-shirt. So one that has 210g per square meter is a thicker piece. So it will be a more premium piece.
There are a lot of brands making oversized streetwear shirts with a thicker fabric and a higher collar. And they usually sell this piece more expensively too. So this will enable us to sell the piece a little more expensively.
So we're going to buy this fabric and we're going to buy the ribbing. I've already set up a cart here so we don't make the video too long. With the choices I would make for these first pieces of my brand.
So I'd make an oversized T-shirt. I'd buy the black sweatshirt fabric and the champagne one, which is off-white. I would buy 4kg of each color.
So it would be 4kg black, 4kg champagne. And I would also buy 5% ribbing in both colors. 200g of ribbing for each color.
And we're also buying the pattern here, which is R$20 each. And the packaging for shipping this pattern also costs R$10 each. So we'll spend a total of R$460 on the product plus R$20 for shipping.
So we're spending R$481. 39 on fabric, ribbing and pattern. If we were to ask a pattern maker to create an oversized T-shirt pattern.
we would spend at least R$200 to R$300. So we're saving a lot of money here. When you're starting out, you have to make investments.
in the smartest way possible. Because investing in the wrong way will cause your brand to fail and come to an end. If you invest poorly and don't get returns, you'll end up giving up on your brand.
Make a smart decision to make these investments here. so that you don't lose money and don't have to spend on things you don't need. Here we can start with an extremely niche oversized T-shirt.
and spending very little on the pattern, as well as buying fabric by the kilo in small quantities. So I'm using the oversized T-shirt example here. but you can choose a pattern for the piece that best fits the niche you've chosen.
And then get your brand moving. So here we've already spent R$481. 39.
We'll also have to buy a domain name to create our brand's website. I would buy the domain here at registro. br.
So here we would choose the name of our brand. and buy the domain here for R$40. 00 for one year.
That's another R$40. 00 we're spending. We've already spent a total of R$521.
39. And if you're interested in participating in a live mentoring session with me. as well as having access to a step-by-step guide on how you can create your brand from scratch.
and sell online with it every day. there's a link here in the description for the "brand from scratch" method. which will be starting a new class soon.
You'll also receive a supplier list, mockup, technical sheet, product cost spreadsheet, management. In short, a lot of things. Everything you need to create your brand from scratch and sell online with it every day.
Link in description. Now we'll have to wait for the fabric we ordered from the manufacturer to arrive. Until the fabric or the pattern arrives.
I would look for suppliers who cut and sew T-shirts in my city. Rafa, where am I going to find these people? You can ask for recommendations or you can simply search online.
You can search Facebook groups. You can search on Google. You can look for recommendations of places that sell fabric in your city.
and ask for seamstress recommendations. Anyway, I recommend that you find at least two to three seamstresses. to make a pilot for you.
And then you'll see which one has the best quality for you to work with. I did a quick calculation here of how much yield we'll get from this oversized T-shirt fabric. I've estimated that we can make about four oversized shirts.
per kilo of fabric. If we have eight kilos of fabric times four pieces. we'll get thirty-two oversized T-shirts.
from this fabric we bought here. And estimating the cost on the high side, let's say we'll pay ten reais. for cutting and sewing each piece.
It's very likely that you'll find it below that. I'm aiming high here assuming you live in a region that isn't a manufacturing hub. text comes from clothing that you'll pay a little more for.
But even if you pay more, you're paying for quality. I recommend that you always prioritize quality. even if you pay a little more.
because you're going to develop a quality piece that customers will buy from you. and they'll be sure they're buying a quality item. so they won't mind paying a bit more than elsewhere.
to buy from you knowing it's quality. And there you have it. Thirty-two pieces at ten reais each for cutting and sewing.
We're going to spend three hundred and twenty reais on manufacturing, cutting and sewing. And in total we've already invested eight hundred and forty-one reais and thirty-nine cents. Here I'm not considering that we'll put any special labels on the garment.
no trims that are too expensive because we're just starting out here. and the idea is to get the business up and running. In the future, we can think about personalized labels or something like that.
Now regarding the prints on the pieces, I would do them on demand. In addition to selling the plain pieces on the website we're going to create soon. I'll tell you how I would do it.
I would also create some prints that are related to the niche I chose. to work with an on-demand print shop. In other words, I would take the pieces we bought and keep them in stock.
plain, and then sell them on the website as plain items. If it sells plain, we simply ship it to the customer. But if it sells printed, we take it to the supplier who will print it for us.
and we add extra processing time for these items. so that the customer knows the actual delivery time. So we factor in the additional time for on-demand printing.
we take it for digital printing, which doesn't have a minimum order quantity. and you don't need to vectorize the image either. and then we ship it to our customer, and this way we don't have any unsold inventory.
We'll be able to generate much more quickly. these 32 Versailles T-shirts that will be in our stock. Besides, I'd model them myself or find a friend of mine.
who fits with my niche. who has the look I want for the brand. to take some photos with the T-shirts we produced.
I'd use a good smartphone. If you don't have one, you can borrow one from a friend. to take some photos and videos of this model wearing it.
I wouldn't offer money as payment to the model. if you're not modeling yourself, you can find a model. and offer payment in the form of product exchange.
You can give two or three items to the model who agrees to participate. But remember, it's crucial that the model embodies the image you want for the brand. Don't choose someone who doesn't represent the brand's target audience.
In my case, an outlaw brand archetype, something that breaks the mold. I can be the model myself because I have tattoos. I think I embody the brand's image, I have what I want to convey.
so I end up being the model myself, which also helps with costs and everything else. But if you think you don't fit the brand's image and you don't want to appear. that's not a problem, you can find a friend.
and offer payment in the form of branded items. Now that we've created this content, we can set up our online store. I would create my online store using Nuvem Shop.
for free without having to spend anything. and there I would list the Versailles T-shirts and plain products. as well as some printed options.
and I'd use this print-on-demand option to avoid having unsold inventory. With the whole site very well set up. I would take what was left of the thousand reais, which was exactly 158.
61 reais. and start advertising on Facebook ads. I would use both the product photos and the material we created with the models.
and put it into paid traffic to generate visits to my site and consequently, sales. Of course, we can start by advertising with a small budget. 6 to 10 reais a day is what I recommend to start with.
and then over time you optimize the campaigns. and also create organic content to generate sales on your brand's website. And if we do some basic calculations here, in the best-case scenario.
this Versailles T-shirt, because it's a unique piece. we could easily sell it for around 150 reais. precisely because it has a higher collar and is a more premium item.
because the fabric is thicker. 150 reais would be a reasonable price to sell this piece. by creating great content, and I'm sure you'll be able to sell.
So if we sell all 32 pieces for 150 reais. we can generate revenue of 4,800 reais. Of course, you'll have to deduct the cost of any prints you make.
if you work with print-on-demand. and some other costs that will come up as the business progresses. such as payment fees and others.
but the fact is, with these thousand reais we could turn it into 4,800. And then the wheel starts turning, you can buy more fabric. to make more products, you'll be able to invest more in ads.
you'll be able to create more content. you'll be able to start your trademark registration. because now you have more money in the bank.
and then things start to happen. If you've made it this far in the video and haven't left a like. leave a like right now.
That's all I had to share in this video. I hope you enjoyed it. until next time, let's go!
