Watch This BEFORE Starting A YouTube Channel in 2025!

so since the beginning of 2025 there's been a giant influx of videos telling you to start a YouTube channel including my own and but I actually kind of figured maybe there's a moment that we need to sit down and talk about potential dangers or problems um that you might want to be aware of before you start one so I'm a big advocate of this YouTube platform I I enjoy using it and I think it's not going anywhere anytime soon with the billions upon billions of watch hours that it's getting uh every single day it's it's

a great platform but that doesn't mean that uploading videos on YouTube isn't without its potential drawbacks or problems so there are three things that I kind of wanted to just outline for you guys today three potential um things that might affect you negatively um that I figured you should be aware of before you start a YouTube channel here in 2025 the third one probably being the most significant and but we're going to get there I'll run through the first two pretty quick first thing is be ready to be dedicated to this um if you're wanting

to grow on a channel if you're wanting to put in the work and grow your channel this requires work it it takes time the majority of channels 99.999% of channels don't grow exponentially overnight most of the time for most people including myself it is an organic overtime growth where it requires consistency quite a bit of work and dedication to the platform um because sometimes you're going to release a video and it just completely flops it just does absolutely terribly and you will get down in the dumps and think I'm useless I'm worthless H nobody wants

to see anything that I want to make push past that keep going uh and start working on your next video immediately and just keep keep pushing on um because some videos do badly some videos do really well sometimes you put tons and tons and tons of work into a video all for it to flop and fail other times you put no work into a video and it takes off right and and it can happen the other way around there's no Rhyme or Reason to it in my opinion and I really don't understand the algorithm at

all for example here's a video that I uploaded at the start of the week and it had like nothing for the first two days and then for no apparent reason just skyrocketed there's no no Rhyme or Reason why I did that you just got to upload and see what happens um so just be aware of that before you start a channel if you especially if you upload a video and it does really well your next video might flop the second thing is maybe a little bit more specific to whatever Niche that you're in so I'm

I'm a camera channel right so I talk about cameras and gear and equipment so this is probably the same for Tech channels as well as you get started when there's no monetary value there's no monetary gain for you as a Creator you're getting sponsors you're not getting Affiliates you're not getting any of these things be prepared that making YouTube videos is not free it takes time which time is money right you're going to have to take time away from somewhere else um and it can often take resources right so if you're especially if you're in

the tech industry if you're reviewing products you have to purchase those products especially early on in your YouTube channel you can't just be sent stuff for free and that takes quite a bit of time before that starts to happen once it does happen it's kind of great but it takes a bit of time for that to happen so at the start on on honestly even on through um the lifetime of your channel you will be buying equipment to make your videos um I think the average cost of my videos across all of them some have

been very expensive some have been cheap has been you know a few hundred per video um I know other people who have put thousands of dollars in their into their videos there's one video that I made that I think cost me about 3 to 4,000 just with all the equipment that I had to purchase and and that's just part of it but it did help build the channel which hopefully sets me up better in the long term so just be that actually especially depending on the niches you're in maybe you're in you know you're wanting

to make uh you know Beauty videos and and you know makeup tutorials and stuff like that you're going to have to purchase your own stuff to make those videos if you're in the tech industry you're going to have to purchase the tech to make those videos happen so be prepared that this is not free Um this can take quite a bit of your expense to to to make decent videos so just be prepared for that now that doesn't mean it has to do that right you you can do stuff for for as low cost as

possible and early on I'd probably advise you to do so just so that you don't hurt yourself financially if you're able to throw money at it throw money at it but if you're not just just be just be cautious cuz it's very easy to to throw too much at it and the third thing is probably the most significant um and that is negativity not necessarily just from yourself you got to deal with that in your own way but negativity from other people I've been working with a college student here in our in our hometown who's

really interested in starting a YouTube channel but he's dealing with a lot of mental health problems at the moment and and he's working on bettering himself or he's going to therapy he's doing all these things but negativity is a big thing that he deals with in internally and we kind of talked about it and kind of saying like look chances are you're going to get some pretty abusive messages in the comments and if you're not prepared for that and you're not you don't know how to handle those things just yet that can that could be

pretty detrimental so what I so what I'd highly encourage you to do is you really need to do a little bit of self-evaluation before you get into this because if negative comments if strangers on the internet saying negative things about you does affect you which that's normal I think for for a lot of people that's normal if if it really gets to you and especially if you have trouble with mental health and stuff like that this might not be the time for you to start your channel because there's a decent amount of that out there

the internet is not the most friendly place in the world you might have noticed this um that's why you know I avoid half of it right you know Reddit X Twitter whatever it is like most of those things I just don't even touch um because I just kind of hate the attitudes that are on there YouTube is pretty decent but that doesn't mean that you're not going to get these random negative hate comments so for me personally when I deal with a negative comment um for me at largely boils down to who it comes from

right and if it's from a close friend I'll go talk to that friend and we can figure it out if it's not from a close friend then it's no skin off my back cuz this person has no idea who I am they don't know my character they don't know me as a person and I and I and I I feel like I'm pretty good at shrugging it off this is something that my wife and I were talking about cuz literally at Christmas dinner I was scrolling through my comments like an idiot cuz why was I

doing that at Christmas dinner but I got a notification that I got a comment and it was just this hateful thing calling me a coward and telling me that I'm immoral and all of this complete random stuff right like I was talking about camera gear you know it makes no sense so I was getting all this negative comment and I was just laughing about it realistically because you know it it's gotten to a point where I can just kind of laugh those off because I don't know who that person is no relation to them and

I I honestly don't care all that much if they hate me because I'm never going to see that person in my life now in the flip side to that that doesn't mean that you should always ignore negativity or negative comments because sometimes you actually need to grow for example I've had uh a lot of nice uh fun back and forth comments with a few other creators and I've loved being able to have that interaction and if one of them who are you know much larger creators they've been doing it for a lot longer if they

sent me a DM or if they commented on a video and said something like hey you might want to reconsider this or hey this wasn't accurate or stuff like that I'm going to take that seriously because I I I trust them I I I I respect their opinions um and I'm willing to learn from them right so so there there are times when you maybe do need to listen to negative comments especially if they're right and learn from them but what I'd highly encourage you to do is assess negative comments and ask yourself is this

criticism for the sake of criticism or is it constructive criticism constructive criticism is a really good thing we all need constructive criticism because none of us are perfect and we all need to grow everybody gets stuff wrong that's okay you're allowed to get stuff wrong you don't have to be an expert on on your given field to be here on YouTube but be willing to learn and grow and and and learn your craft and constructive criticism is a fantastic way to do that if you get a comment that says hey love the video here's a

couple areas that you maybe made a couple mistakes uh go do some more research that's a great comment right learn from that go do your research come back stronger and make the next video even better than the one before but again I urge you to just make sure that you do a little bit of self analysis before you put yourself out there on the internet especially putting your face your name and your personality out there there will be people who will try to tear it down that's kind of their problem um so don't let it

get to you um and if you feel like you can't handle that probably don't start a YouTube channel just yet work on yourself try to you know build build up your character to a point where you have a little bit thicker skin um and and then whenever you're ready go ahead and dive in I hope this hasn't been too negative I I hate making negative videos this isn't designed to be negative it's supposed to be encouraging to try and you know make sure that you are ready for for this next step if this is something
