Video Transcript:
our project is based on the artwork of Pablo Picasso remember him a child prodigy who went to art school at the age of 11 he mastered the realistic style of painting by the time he was in high school in search of a new challenge Picasso experimented with a variety of different color ballets and styles of painting together with another artist Georges Braque because they launched the Cubist art movement rather than portraying an object realistically cubism breaks it down into geometric shapes and combines multiple views of the object from different angles this strategy is really noticeable
in Picasso's portraits of women we're using that artwork as a launching pad for our e-learning project I'm going to be completing this project with corrugated cardboard but if you don't have a cardboard box at home to cut up that's okay you could just do this project with paper that you have lying around the house or a cereal box here are the supplies that I'm going to use for the project a pair of adult sized scissors a ruler a pencil a set of paints I'm using watercolor paints but you can use whatever paint you have lying
around if you don't have paint you could use grams colored pencils or markers if you're painting like me you'll need a brush of rag and a cup of water I also chose to use some oil pastels again you can use whatever material you have in the house I'm using tacky glue but you can use white glue or even a glue gun if your mom and dad will let you and something to draw with I'm using a sharpie you can use a pencil that way you can erase your mistakes if you're doing this project like I
am you're going to need a cardboard box if you don't have a cardboard box then replace it with paper or a cereal box whatever you have around the house if you are using some kind of box make sure that it's all cut apart into pieces you'll want to cut along each place where the box is folded this will make it easier to work with do you remember how when we were sketching those Picasso faces we used a line to cut off each corner of the rectangle you're gonna do the same thing with your large piece
of cardboard or paper those of you using paper I'm gonna say cardboard from now on but I want you to just replace cardboard with the word paper in your head I'm making an angled line along each corner when you're using a ruler make sure you push down really hard with the hand that's holding the ruler so that it doesn't shift on you while you're drawing my cardboard is kind of weirdly bent so I'm gonna draw a line across the top so I remember to cut that off [Music] I think for mine I want an angled
chin so I'm gonna draw another line along the bottom here you can do it or not it's up to you [Music] now all I have to do is cut it out if you're cutting through cardboard it can be kind of tricky to get enough force one thing that might help you is to take your fingers out of the hole in the scissors and put them on the outside that'll give you just a little more leverage so it's easier to cut I can use those triangles that I cut off of the corners of my big pieces
of cardboard for the nose I kind of like this one best now that I have my face all the way cut out I'm ready to decorate and paint it I'm going to use my pencil and ruler to divide the face with a bunch of lines my lines have divided my face into some nice shapes that I'm going to paint with watercolors if you don't have watercolors like I said before you can use whatever you have in the house to color with [Music] I'm going to decorate the spaces with some patterns using my oil pastels you
can do this with whatever coloring material you have feel free to copy my patterns or make up your own [Music] [Music] now I'm going to work on the nose I think it would be cool to have it sticking out of the face a little bit so I'm taking some pieces of cardboard that are a little bit smaller than the size of the nose and I'm going to use them to help them raise the nose up off the face [Music] I want it to be pretty tall so I'm gonna use three layers underneath I'm gonna glue
the first one on I'll do the second one to the first one and the third one - the second one now my nose will stick out of my face a little bit better before I glue my nose on I'm going to paint it I want to pick a color that I didn't use so I'm choosing purple let's move on to one of the eyes a simple leaf shape will do one line curves up bend then down and then down and then up cut out this eye now I'm gonna make the eye that's looking to the
side I'm going to draw an arrow pointed left and then a line that curves out and then back in looks good now I'll cut that one out too [Music] I want to make the iris and the pupil as well so I'll make a circle for one eye and cut it out [Music] and for my sideways eye I'll make the iris as a leaf shape I can use the curved edge of that sideways eye that I made earlier to help me draw an accurate curve for the edge [Music] cut that one out too and it fits
just right now I'd like to take a minute to color the eyes before I glue anything on I don't have white paint so I made do with a white oil pastel [Music] now I'm gonna paint the iris I want my face to have brown eyes you can make your eyes whatever color you want [Music] I realized I forgot to make the pupils so I'm going to make those now they're going to be the same shape as the irises just smaller [Music] now that I have those pupils drawn it's time to cut them out [Music] I'll
paint my pupils nice and black [Music] and now I'm going to glue things together I'll glue the irises down to the eye first [Music] with the sideways eye that Irish should be right up next to the curved line looks like my irises are dry so I'll glue the pupils right down in the middle on the sideways eye just like with the iris the pupil goes right up next to that curved edge onto the mouth you can do any shape mouth you want it could be a circle it could be a square it could be a
rectangle anything you want to try is fine with me I'm doing a heart shaped mouth that'll kind of look like lips I'm satisfied with how my mouth looks so it's time to cut it out [Music] now I'll paint my mouth since I'm doing lips I'm gonna paint it red but if you're doing a rectangle maybe you want to do it white and put teeth in there or if you're doing a circle maybe you want to paint it black the choice is yours [Music] on to the ears you can make your ears any shape you want
half circle triangle rectangle trapezoid I'm choosing to do mine a rectangle I'll draw my shape first then cut it out I've decided that I want to have the inside of my ears open so I'm drawing a smaller version of my ear shape on the inside of my ear and I'm cutting it out how about some eyebrows you can make your eyebrows rectangles I chose to make mine triangles now I've got to cut out those eyebrows I'll paint my ears and my eyebrows I used green on my face so I decided to use that for the
ears too [Music] since I don't have purple anywhere else I decided to go back to purple for my eyebrows [Music] I think I'd like to make some shapes for my cheeks too maybe on the right side I'll do a triangle and cut it out and for the left side I think I'm going to do a circle you could make both different like I am or both of them the same it's up to you [Music] for those cheats I'd like to use a color that I haven't used yet so I think I'm gonna go with orange
[Music] for my hair I think it's gonna be easier to paint a larger piece of cardboard and then cut it into the shapes that I want for my individual strands of hair I'm gonna do red and a piece of orange so that I can have hair of two different colors [Music] I'll put that to the side to dry while I glue the rest of my facial features on there are some facial features that I want to prop up a little bit so that they stick out more from the face I'm gonna do that to these
two cheeks I'll grab a piece of scrap cardboard and cut it so that it's just a little bit smaller than the cheek and glue it on the back [Music] I'm gonna glue the lips straight on and I think I want that I to pop out a little bit more to [Music] I used three layers on the nose so maybe do I want it to pop out more I think I'll do four layers so it pops out even further than the nose just using these little scraps I'm not trying to make it exactly the same shape
as the eye I want this other eye to pop out a little bit more too so I'm just going to put two layers on the back of it [Music] [Music] my eyebrows I think I'm okay with them just being flat with my ears I'm gonna put the glue on the front side of the cardboard instead of the back because I want to slide it underneath the face so it looks like it's a little farther back than the eyes were the nose you might notice I decided to add earrings for my hair I think I'm gonna
do a lightning bolt style zig-zag pattern and I think it'll look best if I alternate red and orange [Music] [Music] cutting those out was a little tricky but I do like how it turned out [Music] and there you have it folks my finished Picasso face I hope you had fun doing this project can't wait to see how yours turns out hopefully it looks totally different than mine you
