have you ever wondered who Jesus was before his human birth or what Jesus was called before his Earthly name we will look at the holy scriptures to see who Jesus was before he came to Earth and what name he was known by be sure to click like in order to learn who Jesus was we first should understand the basic doctrine of the Trinity the Bible teaches us that the father Jesus and holy spirit are all Divine beings which we call God they were there in the beginning and created everything the Holy Trinity is a central
doct in Christianity describing the nature of God as three distinct persons in one Essence God the Father God the son and God the holy spirit this concept highlights the unity of the three persons who are all fully God yet distinct in their roles God the father is often seen as the Creator and sustainer of the universe Jesus Christ is the savior and Redeemer who became human to save Humanity from sin and the Holy Spirit is the Divine guide Within Believers directing comforting and empowering them the Trinity is not explicitly named in the Bible but it
is inferred from various passages such as the Great Commission in Matthew 28: 19 where Jesus instructs his disciples to baptize in the name of the father and of the son and of the Holy Spirit the doctrine of the Trinity emphasizes the complexity and mystery of God's nature John Mar 1:14 tells us the word word became flesh and made his dwelling Among Us the Eternal uncreated Word who was God and yet was with God as one of the persons of the godhead became a human being the word never came into being that is he didn't become
the word he always was the word he always was God the word's existence is open-ended he has always existed the same word that lived Among Us was also with God from the beginning the Christ who walked the Earth as a man is the same same one who existed in the form of God before that it was the word the Son of God who became flesh rather than the father or the Holy Spirit on the other hand theologians have found accounts of Jesus's names before he came into flesh the use of Yahweh as the national name
for God Among the Israelites underscores its profound significance and sacredness in their culture and religion the name yhw derived from the Hebrew consonants yod VAV ha is often vocalized as Yahweh this name reveals God's identity as the Eternal self-sufficient Creator who exists independently of all things over time the Israelites developed such a deep reverence for this name that they considered it too sacred to utter aloud instead they substituted it with Adon meaning my Lord when reading the scriptures consequently many English translations of the Bible use the word Lord where yhw W appears in the original
Hebrew text Yahweh is the most frequently used name for God in the Old Testament appearing over 6,800 times another significant name is Elohim used over 2,500 times often in conjunction with Yahweh as in Ybor Elohim or the Lord God these names reflect different aspects of God's nature and relationship with his people Yahweh emphasizes his personal covenantal relationship with Israel while Elohim highlights his power and Majesty as the Creator in the New Testament the writers frequently apply scriptures that originally referred to Yahweh to Jesus this practice signifies a profound theological assertion Jesus embodies Yahweh in human
form by using Old Testament references to Yahweh in connection with Jesus the New Testament authors affirm the Divinity of Jesus and his continuity with the god of Israel this is not merely a casual reference it is a deliberate identification of Jesus with The God Who revealed himself to Moses and the prophets Jesus himself supports this identification in Luke 24: 25-27 and 44-47 he explains to his disciples that the scriptures speak about him demonstrating that he fulfills the prophecies and promises made about Yahweh in the Old Testament he said to them how foolish you are and
how slow to believe all that the prophets have spoken did not the Messiah have to suffer these things and then enter his glory and beginning with Moses and all the prophets he explained to them what was said in all the scriptures concerning himself similarly in John fer 5:39 to4 and 45-46 Jesus points out that the scriptures testify about him reinforcing the idea that he is the Divine word made flesh he challenges the Jewish leaders saying you study the scriptures diligently because you think that in them you have eternal life These are the very scriptures that
testify about me yet you refuse to come to me to have life despite their extensive knowledge of the scriptures they fail to recognize that these writings Point directly to Jesus as the source of eternal life this is a significant claim because Jesus is positioning himself as the Fulfillment and embodiment of what the scriptures teach in verses 45 to 46 Jesus further asserts this by stating but do not think I will accuse you before the father your accuser is Moses on whom your hopes are set if you believed Moses you would believe me for he wrote
about me this bold declaration asserts that the writings of Moses foundational to Jewish belief contain references to Jesus he implies that if the Jewish leaders truly believed and understood Moses they would also believe in him by saying this Jesus reinforces the idea that he is the Fulfillment of the law and the prophets and that the entire scriptural tradition points to him this theological connection between Jesus and Yahweh underscores the Christian belief in the Trinity Father Son and Holy Spirit Jesus as the son shares the same Divine Essence as the father Yahweh and the Holy Spirit
this understanding Bridges the Old and New Testaments showing a consistent and unified portrayal of God's Redemptive work through history culminating in the Life uh death and resurrection of Jesus thus recognizing Jesus as Yahweh incarnate enriches our understanding of his mission and identity it highlights the continuity of God's plan for salvation and his unchanging nature now revealed more fully in the person of Jesus Christ another account is that Jesus is the ego Amy in John's gospel Jesus tells his disciples I am telling you now before it happens so that when it does happen you will believe
that I am he John 13: 19 the phrase I am he is translated from the Greek phrase ego Amy now here's where it gets interesting at least seven of these times Jesus just says I am without adding anything else to the statement usually he might say something like I am the bread of life John 6:35 where the bread of life explains what he's claiming to be but in these seven instances there's no extra explanation it's just I am and it stands alone often at the end of a sentence which makes it a powerful declaration the
seven absolute I am statements are found in John 8:4 2858 13 19 185 6 and 8 John 8:24 says I told you that you would die in your sins if you do not believe that I am he you will indeed die in your sins John 8:28 says so Jesus said when you have lifted up the son of man then you will know that I am he and that I do nothing on my own but speak just what the father has taught me John 8:58 says very truly I tell you Jesus answered before Abraham was born
I am John 13:19 verse says I am telling you now before it happens so that when it does happen you will believe that I am he John 18:5 says Jesus of Nazareth they replied I am he Jesus said and Judas the traitor was standing there with them John 18:6 says when Jesus said I am he they drew back back and fell to the ground John 18:8 says Jesus answered I told you that I am he if you are looking for me then let these men go if we look back at Isaiah 41:4 43:10 and 46:4
we can see where Jesus use of the phrase ego iy I am in John's gospel comes from in Isaiah 41:4 God Yahweh says I the Lord I am he in Isaiah 43:10 he again says I am he and in verse 12 he adds you are my Witnesses declares the Lord that I am God similarly in Isaiah 46:4 God refers to himself as I am he when Jesus uses ego Amy in these absolute cases he is identifying himself in a way that is deeply rooted in the Jewish understanding of God the phrase I am Echoes the
Divine name revealed to Moses in the burning bush in Exodus 3:14 where God God says to Moses I am who I am this is what you are to say to the Israelites I am has sent me to you by using ego Amy Jesus is not just making a statement about his existence he is identifying himself and revealing his true identity to his followers and to affirm that he is indeed the Eternal self-existent God who was is and always will be the Gospel of John draws a clear connection between Jesus and Yahweh the Old Testament name
for God however John does not equate Jesus with the father for instance Jesus prays to the father in John 17: 1-15 showing a distinction between the two John recognizes that the son is distinct from the father and also acknowledges that both are distinct from the Holy Spirit as seen in John 14:15 1725 in John 15:26 John's identification of Jesus as God or Yahweh presents a trinitarian view of God's nature this means that while the father Son and Holy Spirit are distinct persons they are united in essence and are all fully God so in John's gospel
Jesus is identified as God Yahweh but within a framework that maintains the distinctiveness of the Father Son and Holy Spirit this helps us understand the unity and diversity within the nature of God as presented in Christian doctrine to clarify John's identification of Jesus with Yahweh we can refer to John 12: 37-41 which states even after Jesus had done all these miraculous signs in their presence they still would not believe in him this was to fulfill the word of Isaiah the prophet Lord who has believed our message and to whom has the arm of the Lord
been revealed for this reason they could not believe because as Isaiah says elsewhere he has blinded their eyes and deadened their hearts so they can neither see with their eyes nor understand with their hearts nor turn and I would heal them Isaiah said this because he saw Jesus glory and spoke about him in John 12: 37-41 we see a striking moment where despite all the Miracles Jesus performed many people still didn't believe in him this passage helps us understand why some people were so resistant to his message John connects their disbelief to a prophecy from
Isaiah Isaiah had asked Lord who has believed our message this reflects a recurring theme in the Bible even when God's truth is right in front of us some people just won't accept it John then quotes Isaiah 6:10 which talks about God blinding people's eyes and hardening their hearts this isn't about literal blindness but a deeper spiritual blindness that prevents people from seeing and understanding the truth about Jesus it's as if their hearts are shut off from the revelation of God John adds that Isaiah spoke about Jesus because he saw his glory this means Isaiah's ancient
prophecies were actually pointing to Jesus even though it wasn't fully clear at the time so this passage shows that rejection of Jesus was part of a larger divine plan and connects Old Testament Prophecy with New Testament fulfillment moreover in the gospel of Mark he started his gospel by declaring it's about Jesus Christ the son of God 1 verse1 he immediately ties Jesus to Old Testament prophecies by quoting Malachi and Isaiah he says I will send my messenger ahead of you who will prepare your way a voice of one calling in the desert prepare the way
for the Lord make straight paths for him Mark Dr 1: 2-3 in Isaiah 40:3 the Lord being referred to is Yahweh the god of Israel by quoting Malachi 3:1 Mark highlights that John the Baptist is the messenger preparing the way for Jesus the full verse in Malachi says that the Lord you are seeking will come to his Temple here Lord is Yahweh Mark is suggesting that Jesus fulfills this prophecy meaning Jesus is the Yahweh who has come in a new way Paul Builds on this idea in Romans 10:9-10 he writes that confessing Jesus as Lord
is essential for salvation he references Joel 2:32 which in the Old Testament speaks about calling on the name of Yahweh for salvation Paul's point is that Jesus is now the one we call on to be saved equating him with Yahweh in Philippians 2:9 to11 Paul says Jesus has a name above every name and that every knee will bow to him this Echo Isaiah 45:23 where Yahweh says that every knee will bow to him Paul is equating Jesus with Yahweh showing that Jesus shares in the Divine identity with evidence from both the Old and New Testaments
we understand that before Jesus came to Earth he existed as the Son of God within the Eternal Divine realm in this pre-incarnate state Jesus did not have a specific personal name like Jesus instead his identity was recognized as part of the Trinity the Father the Son and the Holy Spirit this theological framework presents a God who while singular in essence exists in three distinct persons each person of the Trinity is fully God sharing the same divine nature and Essence yet each has unique roles in relationships in this context Jesus or the son was not given
a different name before his incarnation his Divine identity was understood through his roles in the Eternal realm in Christian doctrine Jesus is known as the Eternal Word or logos this concept is vividly described in the opening verses of the Gospel of John in the beginning was the word and the Word was with God John year 1 vers1 here the word refers to Jesus underscoring his eternal existence and divine nature before his Earthly birth while the name Jesus itself is not found in the Old Testament the concept of a coming Messiah or an anointed savior is
a recurring theme prophecies and typologies in the Old Testament anticipate the coming of Jesus for example Isaiah 7:14 speaks of a virgin giving birth to a child called Emanuel God With Us and Isaiah 53 describes a suffering servant who will bear the sins of many these passages Point toward the role and mission of Jesus the theological understanding of Jesus before his Earthly Incarnation highlights his eternal and divine nature as the son Jesus is co-eternal with the father and the Holy Spirit sharing in the one Divine Essence the name Jesus given at his birth signifies his
specific role in the Incarnation and his fulfillment of Old Testament prophecies this name does not Encompass his entire pre-incarnate existence but rather marks his entry into human history additionally names and titles used for God in the Old Testament such as Yahweh reflect the divine nature and characteristics that Jesus embodies in the New Testament Yahweh the self-existent and covenantal name for God the name highlighting God's creative power both point to the nature that Jesus shares as part of the Trinity so if Jesus is Yahweh where does that leave the father in the Old Testament according to
the trinitarian view both Jesus the son and the father are Yahweh because they are one God this means that the father son and holy spirit share the same Divine Essence and name God or Yahweh they are distinct persons but one in essence which is a key part of understanding the trinity in summary before coming to Earth Jesus was known as God and as an integral part of the Trinity he was also the Eternal Word or logos the name Jesus assigned at his birth signifies his mission of human salvation and the Fulfillment of prophetic promises this
understanding enriches our view of Jesus not merely as a historical figure but as the Eternal and divine son who entered human history to bring Redemption if this Bible study has blessed you in any way then share it with your Bible WhatsApp groups also join the Bible Revolution community Through the link in the description
