Hey guys, my name is Igor Felipe and I'm here today to talk about PPE. The use of PPE is often treated as something extremely boring, meaningless or unimportant. I'll start by giving an example off the subject so that we can make an analogy later.
You know when you were going out at night, then your mother said: "Son, take a jacket because it will be cold! " Certainly many of you have been through this. Sometimes it was hot and you asked: “why take this jacket?
It's hot, I'm going to be holding this jacket and it's going to suck ”. And the answer is simple: pre-caution. If it is cold, you will have a blouse as a precaution for that eventuality, and if we extend it a little more, it is the same as thinking that we do not get a cold suddenly.
Imagine, we are fine, we put our feet on the street and say: “I just caught a cold NOW”. And you already have all the symptoms at once. It doesn't work that way, and if it did, we would take more precautions.
Well, if you look at it, that shirt was a precaution for an event in the near or distant future , and PPE's work the same way. They serve as a precautionary measure for an event in the near or distant future. Imagine a locksmith who works with welding every day, and that sometimes he stops using PPE, such as the necessary goggles.
He says: "It just disturbs me and bothers me". And sometimes it is so fast what he will do that he thinks it will not hurt. And just like that shirt was a precaution for an event in the future, the lack of those glasses may not cause any problems now, it may not even cause problems in a few months, but in a few years that welder who did not give importance to a simple PPE, ends up having an eye problem, undergoes surgery, and may even end up getting blind.
and the EPI is boring simply because we do not look to the future or do not care. I quoted the question welder, because once I was seeing a welder do a job with a steel pipe on a rig, and at first glance , he used all the necessary PPE's , but that day the boy was going to weld a tube with a protective layer that was nothing more than zinc. If he was going to weld that tube, the high temperatures that the weld would reach, would trigger a chemical reaction of the compounds releasing a gas, and that gas is cyanide.
For those who do not know cyanide poisoning by inhalation, it can be lethal, and should be referred immediately to the hospital. One case that you should know in which cyanide was inhaled was in the Kiss nightclub , where the foam that covered the place burned, and due to its composition, ended up releasing cyanide gas and gave rise to a tragedy. Returning to the subject of the welder, at first it is very easy to solve the problem, it is just that he sand the layer where the weld will occur and that's fine, but there remains the question: will he be taking all precautions?
So, we must know the work that we are going to do, the materials that we are going to use, and always try to align the execution of the services with the help of a work safety professional . The use of PPE's for each type of activity is extremely important and we should not judge what is there to bring our health and safety as boring and meaningless . PPE's are so important because just as mothers point to a blouse as “PPE”, they are there for our protection, all for the sake of precaution.
