Get ready to dive into a story of love, hate and revenge like no other! Today, you will discover the secrets and tragedies that haunt " Wuthering Heights", Emily Brontë's masterpiece. The book transports us to the confines of 19th century England, where forbidden passions and deep resentments shape the destinies of generations.
Stay with me until the end to unravel the mysteries and passions that haunt this place. A story that will be etched in your memory. Let's start by getting to know the main characters of this fantastic book.
Heathcliff - orphan and of humble origins, his past is mysterious and dark. His obsession with Catherine leads him to seek revenge against those who mistreated him in the past. His attitudes are ruthless and cruel, and this shows how intense and uncontrollable his passion for Catherine is.
Catherine Earnshaw - a free-spirited, impulsive young woman who is torn between two loves: Heathcliff, the mysterious boy, and Edgar Linton, a rich young man who can give her a more comfortable life. She is rebellious, fights against society's rules, but ends up suffering for her choices. Edgar Linton - he is the opposite of Heathcliff.
He is rich, kind, polite and sensitive. Despite marrying Catherine, he knows that she will never forget Heathcliff, which makes him sad. Edgar represents reason and order, unlike Heathcliff's uncontrolled passion.
Nelly Dean - She is the housekeeper of the Earnshaw family and tells the story from her point of view. Nelly followed everything closely, and guides us through the mysteries and secrets of Wuthering Heights. Hindley Earnshaw - is Catherine's brother and hates Heathcliff, blaming him for all the family's problems.
He is driven by jealousy and revenge, doing everything he can to make Heathcliff's life hell. Other characters such as: Isabella, Hareton and Linton also appear in the story and we will get to know them better throughout the plot. The story takes place in an isolated and dark place in the north of England, in the late 18th and early 19th centuries.
It all begins when Mr Earnshaw, patriarch and owner of Wuthering Heights, brings home an orphan boy named Heathcliff after a trip. The Earnshaw family also consists of Hindley, the eldest son, Catherine, the daughter, and Mr Earnshaw's wife. Heathcliff's arrival changes everything.
Hindley, full of jealousy, dislikes him from the beginning. Catherine, on the other hand, becomes great friends with Heathcliff. They are like soulmates, exploring the swamps together, challenging the grumpy Joseph, the house servant, and building a world just for the two of them, far from the rules of society.
Years pass and life in Wuthering Heights changes completely after Mr Earnshaw's death. Hindley becomes the head of the family and takes out all his anger on Heathcliff, treating him like a servant and forbidding him to study. Heathcliff feels increasingly alone and bitter.
Catherine also suffers from this change. She loves Heathcliff, but is also attracted to Edgar Linton, a rich young man who represents an easier and more respected life. She is torn and conflicted between the two.
In the end, Catherine decides to marry Edgar, seeking a better life. Heathcliff feels betrayed and abandoned and his anger and desire for revenge increase even more. Despite having married Edgar, Catherine never stopped loving Heathcliff.
Your feelings are confusing and intense. In turn, Heathcliff, hurt by Catherine's words, who said that marrying him would degrade her, runs away from Wuthering Heights and disappears for three years. This escape marks the end of the first part of the story.
Catherine, now married to Edgar, moves to Mockingbird Farm, carrying with her the sadness of lost love. After Catherine's departure, the Hill becomes an even sadder and darker place. Hindley, consumed by sadness and addiction to gambling and alcohol, transforms the house into a chaotic and bitter environment.
Three years later, Heathcliff returns. He is different, he is no longer the humble boy he used to be. Now he is rich and consumed by a burning and fierce desire for revenge and plans to get closer to Catherine.
Heathcliff's return causes major changes. He buys Wuthering Heights from Hindley, who is in financial ruin. Heathcliff humiliates him, making him suffer in the same way he has suffered in the past.
To complete his revenge, he marries Isabella Linton, Edgar's sister. Isabella is an innocent young woman, enchanted by Heathcliff's mystery and falls in love with him. She decides to get married, but soon discovers that life with him is a real nightmare.
Heathcliff treats her coldly and cruelly, showing that he doesn't really love her. Desperate, Isabella runs away after the birth of her son, Linton. Meanwhile, Catherine falls ill and her health becomes increasingly worse.
She suffers from Heathcliff's rapprochement and her fights with Edgar. In a moment of delirium, she meets Heathcliff again, reliving the love they felt in childhood. Shortly afterwards, Catherine dies, leaving Edgar and Heathcliff devastated by grief and guilt.
Her death is a pivotal moment in the story, intensifying Heathcliff's obsession and making him even more terrible and cruel. He takes out his anger and bitterness on everyone around him, spreading suffering and pain. Isabella also dies, and her son, Linton, is taken to live with Heathcliff.
Linton is a fragile and sick child, both physically and emotionally. His father uses him as an instrument to take revenge on Edgar's family, controlling him since childhood. At Mockingbird Farm, Edgar raises his daughter, Cathy, with love and devotion, protecting her from the dark past that plagues Wuthering Heights.
Cathy grows up as a happy and vibrant girl. But years pass and everything begins to fall apart in his life after his father's death. After Edgar's death, she is left alone at Mockingbird Farm, becoming an easy target for Heathcliff's plans.
Sensing Cathy's vulnerability, Heathcliff lures her to Wuthering Heights and holds her captive, forcing her to marry his son, Linton. Marriage is torment for Cathy, who finds herself trapped with a sick husband manipulated by Heathcliff. Linton dies shortly afterwards, leaving Cathy a widow and under the absolute rule of her father.
The young woman, once happy and vibrant, becomes a prisoner, completely subjugated by her father-in-law's tyranny. Cathy finds herself completely dominated and treated cruelly. It is at this moment that Hareton Earnshaw appears.
Hareton is the son of Hindley, and after his father's death, he was taken in by Heathcliff. Heathcliff raises Hareton as a servant, depriving him of education and affection. At first, Hareton is rude and uneducated, a reflection of the brutal upbringing he received.
But the relationship with Cathy will be fundamental to his transformation. He sympathizes with Cathy, recognizing in her the same pain he suffered throughout his childhood at the hands of Heathcliff. He wants to get closer, but Cathy's resentment and Heathcliff's interference make everything difficult.
But he doesn't give up, even with difficulties he uses his persistence. Little by little, his kindness softens Cathy's heart. She begins to see beyond the rudeness he demonstrated due to his difficult upbringing, and begins to recognize the loyalty and kindness that exist within him.
Cathy's interest inspires Hareton to strive to overcome the hardships that Heathcliff has put him through all these years. He learns to read and express himself better, showing that he wants to become someone worthy of her love. The love that emerges between them transforms the heavy environment of Wuthering Heights, bringing hope in the midst of so much sadness and revenge.
The love and compassion between the two become a contrast to the bitterness and desire for revenge that dominate Heathcliff. Heathcliff, who was previously cruel and ruthless, is uncomfortable with the growing intimacy between the two young people. They represent everything he couldn't have: love, compassion and happiness.
Haunted by Catherine's ghost and frustrated by his failed revenge plans , he increasingly isolates himself, descending into inner torment. He abandons his business and wanders through the swamps, searching in vain for a way to alleviate the pain that consumes him. Overcome by grief and remorse, his health rapidly deteriorates and he dies suddenly and mysteriously.
He leaves behind a legacy of suffering, but he also paves the way for a more hopeful future for those who remain. With Heathcliff's death, the Hill begins to slowly transform, leaving behind the suffering and cruelty that marked it for so long. At Mockingjay Farm, Cathy and Hareton build a new life, based on love, understanding and forgiveness.
They dedicate themselves to looking after the property, which had been abandoned during the years of suffering. With Cathy's help, Hareton continues to learn and grow, overcoming the traumas and difficulties he has suffered throughout his life. He learns to read and write, showing that he is capable of overcoming the marks of the past.
The union of the two symbolizes healing and hope. They represent reconciliation between the two families, who for so long were divided by hatred. The couple's happiness shows that love and compassion can flourish anywhere, even in the most difficult places, overcoming pain and violence.
The story ends with a sense of peace and hope, which contrasts with the dark and sad atmosphere that marked most of the narrative. Cathy and Hareton's marriage represents overcoming the past and healing the suffering that has afflicted both families for so long. Nelly, who now lives at Granja dos Tordos to help the couple, observes with joy the happiness and harmony that reigns on the property.
Together, they lovingly tend the property, restoring the beauty and prosperity that had been lost during the years of suffering. In the last scene of the story, we are taken to the local cemetery, where the narrator, Lockwood, finds the graves of Catherine, Edgar and Heathcliff. He notes that Heathcliff's grave is separated from the others, which symbolizes his loneliness and inability to find peace even after death.
Nelly, who accompanies Lockwood, says that people in the region say they have seen Heathcliff's ghost wandering the marshes. Lockwood, looking at the graves and thinking about the story he heard, wonders if Catherine and Heathcliff have finally found the peace they didn't have in life. He leaves the cemetery with sadness, but also with the hope that the cycle of suffering and revenge has finally ended, giving way to a future of peace and happiness for those who remain.
And so ends the fascinating story of "Wuthering Heights", a powerful work rich in symbolism, written by Emily Brontë. Emily was born in 1818 and died in 1848, despite her short life and having only published this novel under the pseudonym Ellis Bell, she left a profound mark on world literature. This dark, passionate and complex work broke with the romantic conventions of the Victorian era, exploring the complexity of the human soul.
She lived most of her life in the parish of Haworth in Yorkshire, England, with her sisters, Charlotte and Anne, also writers. Emily's life, marked by seclusion, and the few records about her trajectory make her work even more fascinating and enigmatic. She left a lasting legacy, influencing generations of writers and making a legion of fans passionate about her writing.
And so, we end today's video, what did you think? Do you think that if Catherine and Rétcliff had chosen forgiveness instead of revenge their story could have been different? Could the tragedy have been avoided?
